Engineers are pressured by automakers to accomplish 2 main things. Keep costs as low as possible and assembly time as fast as possible. The repair game NEVER even comes in to play. It’s all about profit and sales.
You need to remember that they are only concerned about getting 3 years or 36,000 miles. It is out of warranty and not their problem.
I'm not convinced Ford actually employs any engineers.
I was applied for quality Engineer with Ford Motor Company in 1995 and I have to completed 10 pages of Applications both sides with legal size paper with handwritten to answer all of test questions. I was told by agency that there was no interest to interview since I do not processes the quality of that they are looking for!
Of course they have engineers! They took the ones fired from Oceangate.
@@johnmadow5331Shocking.
Sometimes I think the engineer didn't place it there but, some pencil pusher in accounting decided that they could save a few pennies per vehicle if they shorten the harness and stick the module there instead of with the rest of the modules in the engine bay.
It is not always the engineers. I know many frustrated engineers who will design things properly than have the bean counters and upper management alter the plans to save a few cents or dollars.
Typical scenario.
"you are Installing part A over here and it operates part B over here, why not mount it closer here?"
Engineer gives reason for where he wants the part installed.
They then ask what the difference in cost to the company if the install it in the non-optimal spot.
The engineer gives them the difference in costs.
They then ask what is the percent risk of the part being damaged in the less optimal position and how often it will be damaged and probable time line to the damage.
They then ask what their liability would be if the part is damaged in the non-optimal position.
They will often weigh the extra cost of the part being damaged in the non-optimal position versus how liable the company would be if it is damaged.
In the case you are showing, my guess is they figure if someone damages that unit by misplacing the Jack, it is no danger to their pocket book and probably ordered the engineer to put it in the non-optimal location so they could save the few cents it would cost per vehicle to mount it in a better location.
Amen...my C5 ECM was behind the RH front fender, outboard of the battery. Not in a waterproof spot, no shield.
The vacuum canister is below an outboard and half my vacuum lines were not connected. I'm an engineer, but even I hate car designers.
2007 Mazda 3 TCM mounted in the hottest place... on top of the transmission.
Changed one out in a 2006. It's in the same place under the battery on top of the tranny. Absolutely no ventilation. I'm sure it was the cheapest place to put it.
Brilliant, they took notes from the English car manufacturers.
Engineers need to spend their time in Hell changing serpentine belts on red hot engines.
Do you really think its the engineers?.... Or just maybe its the people further up the ladder that aprove the designs...whom are pretty sure to be influenced by the pressure of change weather good or bad.... to meet an ever tightening envromental regulations coupled to the greed to increase profit margins... And planned absolescence....not to mention taking advantage of the gadget obsessed mentality of most consumers that need to take home with them cause of their addiction to comfort..... You can not buy a true base model anymore... Like really one with roll down windows...manual transmission, non ABS or traction control, no radio, no AC, no satNav,.... Theres are lot of pressure on engineers... Not to mention the everyday mechanic working on modern turd vehicles....but the fault lies with the greed of share holders the constant need to control and industry by goverment regulation....and the lack of practicality of the consumer..... Want proof all you have to do is look at the I phone and you have irrefutable evidence for conviction.
Yeah stick them under the seat in a "tub" like FIAT Chrysler Stellantis did with the Jeeps so when you do a river crossing you give the modules a good bath
I've recently had to have the module on my Chevy truck replaced.... it's on the inside of the rear tire skirt!! Stupid place to put it because it was covered with mud, dirt, road grime!! Thanks Kenny!
Having worked in Engineering management roles for some fifty years I have to tell you there are "engineers" and Engineers.
Ford products have earned the name "Fix Or Repair Daily". Like General Motors products they are NOT renowned for either reliability or durability or design integrity.
This was not always so.
One of my Engineers had an XY Ford Falcon. That car was designed by Engineers of a different era.
Some of the Engineers I managed were incapable of achieving good design and I had to "manage them out" in a humane way, it was just Product Design was not for them. Equally I have been priviledged to manage technical people who over time had developed "journeyman" Engineering skills and an innate abilty to generate good and gifted Product Design.
Me? Well I wouldn't have placed an electronic module outside the vehicle subject to impact, water ingress and corrosion by road salt. Looks like the casing was aluminium too, a Guaranteed to Fail design feature. You'd be one of my "journeymen" Kenny.
@aeroearth - thank you for your service to the industry. I have worked with many managers who have created terrible environments & you sir, sound like you went above & beyond to do the right thing. Thank you for your comment. I truly appreciate hearing from an experienced engineer. Keep wrenching, sir 🔧
This is what we encounter every single day as auto technicians. So many jobs would be much easier and less costly if the component, bolt or whatever was placed in a slightly different place. It makes no sense and it's getting worse. Try doing a thermostat on a 2019 GMC canyon with a 2.8 diesel. A simple thermostat job takes about 6 hours because of it's location. Every year it gets worse and the cost of repairs goes up and up. Maybe Biden is in charge of automotive engineering! 🤪
I always wondered why engineering was so, kinda bassakwards, but I guess it creates job security for the dealer techs who have to replace these electrical modules under cars, and trucks, totally exposed to salt, water, mud, and of course slipped jacks😮.🤔😳
No, sir, it’s speed of assembly. The more we build the more money we make. Screw the consumer and the maintenance dudes.
@@46bovine sounds about right
Have you ever did a oil pan gasket on a all wheel drive trailblazer the dam front drive runs threw it so you have to take apart the whole system.
As the saying goes, “Never let engineers play by themselves.”
Placement of some modules like that is dictated by the assembly plants, ease of access, ergonomic rules, etc... has little to do with "good engineering". I'd be MORE worried about water damage to that module than something striking it. AND, I do agree, those cardboard crappy covers OEMs use are JUNK .. when they start to fall off, I yank them and toss in the trash.
The Engineering Department Designs it that Way, Work for dealerships $$$$$
It doesn't have to make sense, just money.
The new era of “ you told me to put a module on so I did. Leave me alone or I’ll file a complaint “. I think I have more confidence buying a 10 yo vehicle and being lied to buy the seller than buying a new vehicle and facing issues like this.
Kenny I got curious about why engineers do this stuff. I asked an engineer if he has children and he said no, I told him not to have kids, don't want them to think like you . That got me on the list.
😂😂😂😂 that's fantastic! Thanks for sharing & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
What if you go through a deep water puddle
This car is not for driving in the rain.
"BBBBZT!!! LOL
Kenny, Kenny, Kenny, you missed the point! They don’t design vehicles for ease of maintenance, they design them for speed on the assembly line in the plant! Screw the consumer and the maintenance folks, quick assembly and out the door! What happens after it’s sold ain’t their problem!
You are right. It's such BS though. Thanks for your comment & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
The engineers job is to maximize profitability. They factor in its life span only has to exceed the warranty by minutes.
😂 "mere minutes" You got that right! Keep wrenching 🔧
I thought it was bad back in the later 90's when GM put the ECM on top of the coolant tank Lets not only bake it with engine heat lets see if we can cook it more with coolant or soak it if the tank fails
If somebody is stupid enough to lift the vehicle up in that location, damage to the module is the least of my concerns, damage caused by the floor jack to the undercarriage is more of problem than crushing a body module. All vehicles have specific lift points for that reason!
Absolutely agreed. I have seen some pretty "rough help" when new tow truck drivers or a hood samaritan that stops that has no idea what a life point is. Thanks for your comment & keep wrenching 🔧
When it comes to cars, it’s quantity or quality
Only for American made cars, the Germans still make good quality
how do you spell engineer???? a-s-s-h-o-l-e !
Engineers take Acid and drink Martinis at lunch!!! LOL
😂😂😂😂
Engineers.....Don't get me started. Nightmare changing a transmission, really, who would have thought.😮
Replacement modules and service work for the dealership!
Friday night WWE Smackdown, Kenny the Mechanic verses the Automotive Engineers. Losers leave the country. We got your corner Kenny!
After thought they forgot to install to begin with
😂 could be! Keep wrenching 🔧
You can only hope the module was contracted thru Delphi. Their stuff is indestructible.
Some more of Ford's better ideas
I'm pretty sure Engineers never think about how Mechanics have to take things apart or really care
gm puts modules in bumpers behind tire spray, what could go wrong, takes out the network cant run the car, remeber when the ecm was mounted inside where it was dry?
Engineers should have to apprentice as mechanics/technicians as part of their degree. Some of the places that they put things are crazy! Thanks for commenting & keep wrenching 🔧
At ford quality is job one.
Sorry I’m late. Was watching the Biden debate.
Kenny you need to remember it's 33.333% the designer fault 33.333% the engineer's fault and the last 33.335% it is the accountant's fault.
(F)ound (O)n (R)oad (D)ead used to install ignition modules on engine blocks, Alternators DIRECTLY above the exhaust manifolds, composite material pistons on brake cylinders that would expand and lock up the brakes and TOO many other stupid things. THAT'S, why I have never had a problem with FORDS because I will NEVER own one!
Wonder what is book time to R &R trans ? Ford -Fix Or Replace daily!😢$$ Kenny Ford started this with crown Vic's 20 + years ago modules inside trans r&r trans not rebuilt the trans ,these where squad cars with hi mileage running 24/7 3 shifts,we had trans rebuilt with modules $2200 20 years ago and r& r like the old C5,now Ford edge is a nitemare to r&r trans! What did it cost for that job$$$😢😮
Modern Fords suck. They produce toilets on wheels. Their quality sucks. Idk why they let things get so crummy - they used to be fine/tolerable.
Too damn much stuff in not enough space!!
You hit it in the head when you said if you were an engineer the product would cost a lot more, be a lot bigger & too late to market. If you actually met the engineers who did that nutty packaging, you would find (most of them) are as frustrated as you are.
When I retired from Ford Engine Engineering in 2002, we were struggling trying to pack 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound box. Today those engineers have to pack 15 pounds into the 5 pound box.
Way to disparage “all engineers “. There is always a natural distribution of skill sets in every profession. I think I have provided 40 years of good engineering to my employer. Retired now. For those 40 years I had to put up with engineer bashers. Did I make mistakes? Of course I did. It’s cliche but every error is an opportunity to make an improvement
Engineering marvels of 2025 : no oil dipstick in New Ram pick ups going forward. Yippee
They claim people don't know how to check oil level properly. You know the monitor will malfunction and cause engine explosions. I wonder if engineers are engineers
I think BMW put some kind of super expensive module in the floor under the driver's feet or something
I have said on several occasions that there must be a special place in hell for engineers who design the mechanisms to retain and roll door glass up and down. And until you have had to remove a transmission from a 1957 T-Bird you have not really lived. That is the only job I turned away from when it came into our Ford dealership in 1979. It was a gorgeous T-Bird, but once I had it up on the lift and saw the X-shaped cross-member I decided there was no way I was goingt oremove that cross-brace as it as clearly part of what help the entire frame together. It looked like it would have been easier to pull the engine and tranny together, but I was already buried with more conventional work...
Automotive engineering has always baffled me with regards to their or managements decision making on vehicle design
The first objective is for easy construction on the production line and when everything is easily accessible to the assembly workers. Modular assembly is so easy for making something but can make it impossible to get at for repairs.
just remember that an engineer will walk past a room of beautiful women so they can "F" a mechanic!
Trained design engineers should have to work on their designs before production starts
I'm with elcheapo on this. Ford seems to do design with summer students. why waste money on engs?
Remember, that somewhere, sometime in the past, some mechanic must’ve screwed an engineer over, and now we’re paying for it forever more.
Why would they put a computer there how stupid.
Dirt, water, salt ice, extreme temperatures, etc. are but guaranteed to cause corrosion in the wiring harness and connector/connectors.
It’s because 2019 was the WORST year for Ford transmissions! I had to get a new transmission for my 2019 EcoSport too. And those underbody shield are horrible. Even if they’re secured, they cause the most horrific flapping sound always 😢
@APOKreations, what are driving in Kuwait? Whatever it is I hope it has great AC 🩵💜
@@WrenchingWithKenny I’m driving a Pajero
😬 eeewww! We are sending much love to you. Do ya need anything?
As an Uncle of mine stated Engineers so smart but so stupid
My wife had a Ford when we got married. Wiring harness insulation disintegrated. Ford discontinued the part so we had to junk it. No more Fords
Wonder how long that ford would last up north in the rust belt. 😂🤣
Guaranteed to last till out of warranty, before it has parts covered by warranty failing. Which is why the evap and emissions stuff is so well protected, because that has to last 10 years, the rest can rot away around it.
Mike you are right that's a stupid place to put it WOW😮😢
There’s good engineers and then there’s fresh college graduates that these companies hire because they get them cheap that don’t know any better. Most companies are all about the profits and don’t pay for the experienced engineers.
You make a great point. It all points to corporate greed. Thanks for your input & watching the channel. Keep wrenching 🔧
Love your channel keep it up. I’m one of those experienced engineers that is sucking hind tit to all young want to be’s. I think all engineers should be required to spend 2-3 years getting their hands dirty before they can design anything.
Thank you for your kind words. It would be great if auto engineers had to do an apprenticeship as a mechanic. The industry would be a better place for sure!
If you are going that far in to jack the vehicle, you really can't blame it of Ford. That's just pure incompetence. If you screw up that bad, other parts can be damaged as well. I work on them every day and have never seen anyone jack in that location. If you go in further than the pinch rail, the shield drops down and if you try to go any further, you'll hit the side. It acts like a deterrent. You don't ever feel the need to put the jack in that location. But even if you did, its not a major part. Its just the module that controls the transfer case, so you would still be able to drive the vehicle. A new one goes for about $100 if I remember correctly.
If you want to complain about Ford, at least come up with a good example, like having to get in the back seat and take things apart just so you can replace the cabin filter behind the glove box. Or making the sunroof track part of the roof, so if anything breaks, even if its minor, you have to chop the entire roof of the car off, and replace it. The new roof costs $12,000 plus labor and 3 new motors.
This unscripted video is to show how stupid a location it is for any module, mechanical damage is the first thing that came to his mind so he said it as an example.
There's a million dumb things in cars it must be very frustrating to work with at times, that sun roof problem is ridiculous if you have to fix that under warranty I'm assuming the manufacturer would have to pay for it
Engineer? What's driving a train got to do with this?
What was the module for that’s what I wanted to know
run thru a water puddle recipe for disaster
Planned obsolescence at its finest.
Every car I've owned post 1990 has had some crazy design decisions. Some are real head scratchers.
Engineering departments Uggg!
It's planned obsolescence.
Ford’s better idea!!!
C'mon man, you know they sit at they're desks thinking of ways to mess with tech's. Lets see em fix this one.....laughter in the back round.
*their
Long ago, I bought a 1985 and1/2 Ford Escort, new, the worst car I've ever owned. I did as many repairs as I could on it one of which as a defective horn. A horn? Yes, a horn. But what struck me was not that the horn that had to be replaced, but where they located it: behind the right front wheel well. Huh? Why there? How about somewhere at the front of the car, like near the grill? I'll never understand engineers.
Saved 2m of wire to put it there. So it was moved, plus now also less need to intrude into the airflow, so they could put another cooler there instead.
cost cutting tactics
It is the same way with the fuel pump modules in the 2004 to 2008 Ford F150s.They put it above the spare tire holder where dirt and crud get in corroding it away
Yeah, like the gm pickup trucks with the fuel pump control module mounted near the spare tire. Everyone I've replaced are full of water. Drill a hole In the module housing and most of the time they are full of water.
Is take that old Escort behind you over this contemporary junk any moment.
WTF
Its not the engineers. We only design the box the size and shape they want and with the function they want. Its the designers.
Pass the buck, it's not my department, The managers approved it, etc. All bullshit excuses. Take some person responsibility Mr./Ms./Mrs. engineer.
Ford F150 fuel pump control modules. Sprayed all winter with sand and salt, and mounted to a steel crossmember causing galvanic corrosion. They just dissolve after a few years. Over a century of building cars and engineers keep making the same mistakes.
Yup! Then they get the design perfected & discontinue it the following year 🙄
I retired after 40+ years in the business and have jokingly maintained that the engineers were smoking something and drinking Jack Daniels while they were designing cars and that I was waiting for left handed threads on oil filters.
👀
Nothing is a bad idea when you only care about making a profit?
Damns plastics.
Is Ford keeping their female engineers quota that would probably be the reason they are getting crappy.
I gotta disagree. I will take thoughtful engineers regardless of there gender. Our daughter knows more about cars than most men. Keep wrenching 🔧
