  • What is your definition of an ideal dress watch? For me, it is beautiful and elegant, has good wearable proportions, is nicely decorated in-house movement, has excellent execution and finishing, and is a Heritage watch brand. Well-known brand but not too well-known. If the brand and the model are slightly under the radar, it’s an additional point for me.
The watch that I have for a review today has it all. It is the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Automatic Moon Phase model in 39 mm.

Beautiful pictures about a dream watch. We complain about JLC's price increases, but we always forget that it is one of the big brands. So we could constantly be annoyed about the prices of watches. But it makes little sense. I own this exact watch, as well as the Polaris, and when I have it on my arm, I feel sublime every time. I can't really describe this pleasant feeling, but I don't get that with many other brands. Of course a Master Thin Moon is no better than a Calatrava, but it is in the same league. It doesn't always have to be a precious metal case, and white gold doesn't have a very different character than steel.

I do not regret getting this watch instead of the reverso tribute. It is a thing of beauty and is surprisingly very versatile since all you need is to change the strap and you get a completely different watch.

Agree. The Master Ultra Thin is a very solid competitor to Calatrava or Patrimony.

I agree tbh I like the hour markers and dial design more on the jlc then the Patek, curious if they will make the blue dial on the 36mm version. But plan to get this, this year or next.

the JLC Master Control Ultra Thin Moonphase is my favorite JLC. If i had the funds, that's the JLC i would get. way better than a reverso.

The JLC Master Ultra Thin is still the only expensive watch that I have tried on that felt truly worth its price tag. I tried on the blue dial with a moonphase and date, and I also tried on the silver dial date only version. I am an enthusiast, but I can't afford luxury watches and certainly not high horology. So I do my best to pay close attention when I have the opportunity to try out watches like that. Tudor, Panerai, Omega, Rolex, Piaget, to name a few big brands, were all more or less dissapointing. But I was blown away by both JLCs. The Piaget was close, though, but that watch is 45k...

I owned this for about a year and I do not regret selling this and getting a 6119G Calatrava. It’s very nice don’t get me wrong, but it comes with some quirks- the ceramic rotor was annoyingly loud, finishing on the crown was sharp and the movement had a bit of “back” play. (when you wind back, the second hand moves back by a bit as well.), and reading the date was a bit of a chore sometimes. Yes these are small niggles but when you pay that much for a watch, especially as an enthusiast, I get to nitpick.

    • @OneManReviews

The rotor is quite loud, it's true.

    • @GlobBucket

Your Calatrava must have cost alot more than the JLC. £11,400 vs £27,500. Would you say, in your own opinion, that the Calatrava was worth the price difference?

  • @albundy3929

Nice review. Why do jlc watches seem to all have loud rotors? Which brands tend to have the most quiet rotors? Thanks

@@OneManReviews It is only "fair", if you comapre to the ridicoluos retail price they got. For every normal person this is insane.

What exactly is so high horology about this watch?
All my quarzt are more accurate, so, it fails on that regard.
Brush/polish, done on a machine, meaningless.
The movement, unnecessarily complicated for something a quarzt can do better.

@@bertholdbach4959 Of course, it's complete nonsense to consider a Quartz watch as a comparable luxury watch. Why do people still buy records today? Well, many watches are beautiful, but also much more expensive. ALS has almost doubled the price of its steel Odysseus and is now around €50k. Badmouthing watches makes little sense, and comparing quartz with manual watch movements makes no sense at all. The real material value is only available for watches up to perhaps around €3k. To be fair, I have to say that if you can own the Master Thin Moon for a longer period of time without any stress, then you will feel something that I can't really describe well.
