  • Every trade show is a different and chaotic struggle to see the things that catch your attention along the way. As setting appointments is the only way to actually ensure you have time to talk with anyone, it leaves you moving from one part of the show to another without much time to stop and take it all in. I try to make the most of this by at least catching a few frames of video, so I can remember to look into things later and do more research. Having only been at the NAMM show this year for the weekdays (it's super cheap if you fly out of there on Saturday Morning and skip the weekend) my schedule was extra hectic.
There was a ton of cool stuff to see, and this video isn't in any order of priority. It's also not supposed to be a best of the show or the only things I wanted to check out. There was tons that I missed and even more I didn't record for various reasons. Chance meetings and introductions are always fun as time allows. Meeting Brandon Heinz and hearing about the work they are doing with steerable arrays was really interesting.
Although the Renkus-Heinz crew were incredibly busy setting up for an evening event, Brandon took a few minutes out to show us the new ICLive X-Series speakers they were setting up. Steerable arrays and a really well thought-out compliment of accessories make these attractive for the small to mid-sized local sound provider. I hope to have Brandon back on the channel in the future so we can dive deeper into the technology they are using to accomplish the steering.

Kling & Freitag VIDA has done beam steering and it is insane. Make sure to check them out. KF is slowly taking over the market here in sweden and I am exited.

Looking forward to the IC Live-X video. The TW audio Ella is also interesting to me, did you see that at all?

Why people talk about churches always with mixers. Arent they popular in audio studios??

Churches spend big on audio visual gear. They also bring less experienced folks in to learn & help, which adds to the enthusiasm there. Many of them are also running programs that output more content than a lot of studios, even broadcasting like television stations around the clock.

NAMM and "pro audio" in the same sentence. AES, okay, but NAMM? Most manufacturers there use the phrase principally for marketing, not a reference to the degree of engineering involved, unfortunately. At NAMM It should probably be called "garage band audio" or equivalent. "Church market" is good, too--that's the right speed. It's the wannabe show, semi-pro, smaller venue usage typically, a good place for the AES Academy to be for general concepts and intros more than a place where professional / industrial design and quality is going to be normal and expected. For example, mixing console noise floors that will fly with average NAMM customers would result in their cause being sold or pitched in the dumpster if found in a serious professional application.

When was the last NAMM show you attended? The Pro Audio wing they added a few years ago is HUGE.
DiGiCo unveiled their new console there
this year... right next to API & SSL as far as console manufacturers go. The whole industry is there. 5 years ago you were right, but in the past two or three they’ve literally added Pro Audio to the show... it’s a whole additional building.

@@DcSoundOp It's been about 5 years since I have been at NAMM, so that may indeed be the case, though I guess that begs the question of why 98% of those at a NAMM show would care about things like Class A discrete console design, custom-engineered control rooms, etc. If you're not someone whose career at a major studio or similar operation depends on getting fine details right every time, and your company doesn't have the kind of cash that is involved in ensuring that, it just seems like it would amount to more "wow factor" for attendees than actual sales for pro exhibitors. And there is still the issue that, for example, local church-sound installers in my area drum the "pro audio" label all the time, yet don't have the faintest clue what the phase relationships of the signals they send across their auditoriums are doing from their "stereo" reinforcement of a mono signal. Their managers would never miss a NAMM show, though. The "pro" label fills the industry almost more at the bottom and the middle than at the top where it isn't needed.

Zoom L series is horrible. Bleed and reversing DC through audio ins/ outs. Fried my comtek transmitter and a UCR411a because of it. DO NOT BUY

Voiceguitar Holy Crap, they don’t put that in the brochure! That’s almost bad enough to order one just to test it out. Thx for the warning.

DcSoundOp no problem! I now have done the extreme option, by putting isolation transformers between all equipment to prevent DC pass through. I did this before between me and sound mixers, but dread the idea of having another Zoom experience. Luckily that was what happened out of the box during prep. If you want to test for bleed, high volume is needed ( PA speaker discovery ). Most broadcasters will never discover it because they monitor too low.
