Unboxing and first impressions of the Pioneer BDR-XD07B slim portable BD/DVD/CD Writer (though I won't be using it as a "portable").
If you want one of these babies for yourself, you can pick it up here:
www.amazon.com...
It comes with a download link and product key for Cyberlink Media Suite, which I assume is disc authoring/burning software. But I didn't bother with it since I already have editing/authoring/burning software that I like. Speaking of which, here it is:
VideoReDo (simple editing MPEG2 files): www.videoredo....
TMPGEnc Smart Renderer (simple editing MPEG4 files): tmpgenc.pegasy...
TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works (editing and converting MPEG files of all types): tmpgenc.pegasy...
TMPGEnc Authoring Works (for relatively complex BD, AVCHD, or DVD disc authoring): tmpgenc.pegasy...
AVStoDVD (freeware for simple DVD authoring without menus or reencoding): sites.google.c...
ImgBurn (freeware for BD/DVD/AVCHD/CD/data disc burning): www.imgburn.com/
(note: the install includes some crapware)
This video was recorded with a OnePlus 7 Pro and edited with TMPGEnc Smart Renderer (link above). One of these days I intend to start learning DaVinci Resolve or at least KDEnlive and move much of my editing work to Linux, but that hasn't happened yet.
I bought this device because the new editing PC I built did not have a bay for an internal Blu-Ray burner, which I would have preferred.
Do you have an external optical drive or are you planning to get one? Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section.

I agrre with you about the limited options of a PC case with the option for a internal Blu Ray drive I have an external DVD rom but now I need to rip some Blu Rays so I just ordered this drive off of amazon
The drive is quite noisy while playing audio CDs. If you often play these on the PC go find a different drive.
Hi Bohemian Tech,
Thanks for the upload. I just bought the same one in July 2022. I was going to get the Asus one but it did not have the burn functions I was after. What appealed to me was the vertical opening as I bought a slim external Pioneer that swallowed my DVD, I fear the tiny drawer motors are under specced for the job.
So I have tried to gently place 3x different DVD/CD's into it and it sits up off the spindle? It does not lie flat and I don't want to force it... any clues? Thank you in advance if you see this.
Sorry this is the only 4k Blu Ray burner I've had any experience or knowledge of at all.
You need to plug it into a USB 3 port if you only have 2.0 you need to use the DC input as well, they come in USB to DC 5v or you can buy a power point to 5v barrel plug. Your original cable also could not deliver the power needed.
Yeah, it was a USB3 port. Problem turned out to be plugging the cable into the port and then plugging the cable into the drive. Reversing the process (plugging the cable into the drive, THEN plugging the other end into the PC) fixed it. Thanks.
@@bohemiantech9110 Interesting I have the same drive was just watching to see if it's normal for it to open a mm and latching when opening turns out it is. Mine doesn't have a problem what order I put the cable in was a bit disappointed it came with a micro b high speed and not USB a to C.
Super late to the party lol but just want to say that I think that you had to first use the cable it came with and after windows recognized it, it doesn't matter how you connected it. But I will try and see if I can recreate the same circumstances and verify if that is true or not. My drive will be arriving in a few days. I need to buy a longer cable lol Could you give me a link to the one you bought? I'd appreciate it sir. Maybe consider updating your description with a link to the cable in question so others who come by will see it. Thanks for the video!
Awesome Review!!!! :) This is the way it should sound! :)
Hey thanks!
Hi! Does this play movies straight inside of windows? I had a blu-ray player for my TV that I replaced and I decided to use for my PC. Issue is it would be like a whole different input and wouldn't play anything through video players such as Windows Video Player or VLC media player, it would bring up a whole new GUI without any mouse or anything. Long story short, I would like to know if putting a disc into this player will allow me to open it in Windows Video Player/VLC Media Player? Thanks
Yes, I just put the Blu-Ray Disc of Airport (1970) in this drive. The disc spun up, though nothing played immediately. I fired up VLC and it flashed an error message about my PC not having Java, but went ahead and played the movie anyway. It paused/buffered a few times, which I suspect it wouldn't do if I had ripped it to my hard drive first. Long story short, though, yes, this drive will play discs on your PC through VLC or other media playing software. Hope that helps.
@@bohemiantech9110 It does, thanks!
@@manofocean no sweat.
Can i use it as DVD/Blu Ray player on smart TV?
Nope, it's only connection is USB, requires a PC with appropriate software.
@@bohemiantech9110 The key word here is "smart tv". It's a plug and play device and should be recognised by a tv as external storage. In which case, any dvd playing app should be able to playback the content much like it would from a flash drive.
@@cyberlord64 doesn't work like that
thank you, not sure if I missed it, does it come with the code or disc for Cyberlink Media Suite? Thank you !
It comes with a download link. I already have authoring/burning software I'm happy with, so I never tried it. Hope that helps!
Not compatible with Catalina or earlier iMac operating systems. The BDR-XD05 is compatible but it is difficult to find.
Sorry to hear that.
Decent video, what about the PureRead4+ function. Can you tell something about it (your experience with it?)
Also do DVDS and Blu-rays look better when you rip them with this disc drive comparing to ohers?
Sorry I don't have an answer to thst yet, since I've been using this drive to burn discs and have not ripped one yet.
There will be no difference between drives when ripping discs, you get exactly what's on the disc unless there is a fault in the drive or damage to the disc.
if I may ask, what monitor model is it? it looks like the size i'm looking for, and i'd love to have a reference
also 2 years later, does the Pioneer burner still is working fine for you? or would you try something different if given a chance?
Thank you for the vid
I don't remember if the model number and i'm at work now so can't check. But it's the basic LG 32" 4K model. No super fast refresh rate for gaming or anything like that. The Pioneer drive is still great. Only reason I might "upgrade" is for a 4K Blu Ray disc burner. I understand that's a thing now.
@@bohemiantech9110 32" is enough for me to have a go, thank you
@@veightyone no sweat.
+1 for the review really well made
Two questions:
1) is there a 5V external adapter hole in the back of this drive?
2) is the top aluminium metal or just silver color plastic?
Also

1. Nope, just a USB 3.0 connector.
2. The top is black plastic.
3. Thanks for the endorsement!
Will this play blu ray/dvd/cd's?
Not by itself. You have to connect it to a PC or Mac and install software such as VLC. Then your computer can play dll those discs.
Can this work as a reader too? Can you watch a movie with this or is it burn only?
Works great playing discs, too!
Hi, is it quiet as a playback device?
It makes some spinning noise, but nothing out of the ordinary. Yeah, you could play a movie on your PC with this drive.
@@bohemiantech9110 Thanks for your answer!
when I looked this up it said it was a CD player , its not is it ??
It can play CD's, but that's just one thing it does. Primarily it's a Blu Ray burner.
@@bohemiantech9110 were can I go to read up on how to get it to play cds
@@Winterr62 I'm not near that computer or my CD's at the moment, but I would guess if you install VLC media player (avaiilable for nearly every OS), it should play CD's from that or any other drive. Hope that helps.
I want to rip, not burn. Does this work for that too?
Hardware-wise, yes it will work for ripping discs. But it does not include any software for that purpose. You will need to get something like AnyDVD or DVDfab and then you can rip discs from this drive.
Does it also play store bought Blu-rays?
Yes, it does, as long as you have either the cyberpunk media suite (drive comes with a download link for it) or the VLC media player on your PC.
Thank you so much. I maybe getting a new mac, but I still can use VLC . . . correct?
@@marcgothic Yep, it's good with Macs!
5:38, I have something similar happen to me with USB stuff.
Hopefully plugging the cable into your USB device first, and THEN into the PC fixed your issue like it fixed mine!
Great video thanks so much..
Thanks for the feedback!
What additional cable did you buy?
Here ya go: www.amazon.com/dp/B00C7RXR72/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_Z57GX8GYRAJA7DK1QCKW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Is this a good burner? Does it burn in high quality?
Yes, movies burned with it look and sound excellent, and play great in any Blu-Ray player (or even most old DVD players if you're burning a DVD-R).
Do you follow NHL Hockey ? you remind me in a good way of the Columbus Blue Jackets head coach "John Tortorella"
I follow hockey when the Blues are doing well. I'll admit I'm just a fair weather fan.
Would help to shed some light so that we can see you!
Yeah, I'm still making the occasional rookie mistake now and then. Thanks for the tip.
That polo shit and white walls are so bOhEmIaN, dude.
maybe its time to order an external mic
Looking into it.
Man has anyone told you sound like
Dan Aykroyd. Just saying
Yep.
dude awsome review but get some light or just don't film again sun
Thanks for the praise and for the constructive criticism!
very bad sound
That length of cable is pathetic.
amazing video! Made me laugh xD +_+
Thanks 😆
