- Doctor Sleep is, to me, the perfect example of everything that a sequel should be.

doctor sleep is such an underrated movie and i always really love watching videos like this! flanagan did such an excellent job and the way it went overlooked (no pun intended) by general audiences is a real shame
Years later and this is still one of my favorite movies ever. Flanagan has been my favorite director since Oculus, and I'm so happy he's been getting a lot of the recognition he deserves. In my opinion, no one is better suited to adapting Stephen King that he is. It's crazy how similar their approach to stories are.
This was a great review. I personally connected with Dan a lot, especially with his relationship with his Father. I've heard Doctor Sleep got a sort of reappraisal while it streamed and the Director's Cut helped too. Very well done work, thank you for helping keep this movie's legacy alive.
Thanks so much, I appreciate the love for the video tremendously and I'm glad you connected with the film. I wasn't aware of any reappraisal, but if that is the case then I'm stoked! The more people that give this movie a chance, the better.
You nailed it right in the head: Doctor Sleep respects and honors the Shining, both its original novel and film adaptation. It uses elements from the past responsibly, and furthers the theme of the overall story to a respectable conclusion.
It's a bummer that this film didnt perform as well as it should have, but I'm certain it will become a classic in time
fantastic movie. by the way, the guy is wearing a dog suit, not a bear suit; it's explained in the book. common misconception.
I've always thought the Shining is a vastly overrated movie that removed most of what made the source material interesting, but Dr Sleep managed to solve most of my issues with it. It retroactively makes the Shining better.
I disagree with the fact that the Shining is overrated, if they included most of the stuff in the book, it would be terrible. Just look at Stephen King’s mini series for it, even though he was the creator, it resulted in it looking like some Nickelodeon kind of shit. But I agree Doctor Sleep is better,it made me cry at the end, that is how good it is. I consider it the best horror movie ever in history, fantastic movie! ♾️/10!!🏨🪓✨🔥👻💤❄️👍😊
Not sure if you read the book, but its also and incredible adaptation, perfect balance of being accurate and changing things meaningfukly i actually think the movie has the better ending. Its perfect.
Great observation about how Kubrick's "The Shining" is about trauma whereas "Doctor Sleep" is about therapy! I will say, upon rewatching the former again for the first time, you give it a lot of credit by assuming it was completely intentional, imo ;) And I think the reason Kubrick's movie seems to be focused on trauma is bc it's disjointed and hard to piece together, as you say, but I think that wasn't completely intentional bc of all the extra layers of meaning that Kubrick added at the expense of the source material's themes. (I also really wish Kubrick had not changed Danny's injury from a broken arm to a dislocated shoulder because bone can fracture and heal improperly and that would have worked well with the pacing and shell-shocked vibe of the movie).
Also, having read the book, "The Shining," I can confirm the book does grapple with the characters' trauma a great deal. In a very real sense, the whole story revolves around this one traumatic event--breaking Danny's arm--and it's traumatic for everyone involved. Jack is overwhelmed with guilt and trauma over what he did to his son (and because his own father was an abusive alcholic toward him and he didn't want to be that kind of a father) while Wendy's trauma manifests itself in her fear that Jack will fall off the wagon and Danny's Shine is proof to her that he will never truly recover from the event. "Doctor Sleep" the movie really does do a lot to unpack trauma in a way that Kubrick's film, I think, does not--and yes, the casting of Jack was a bit off because the character in the book is far more sympathetic and "normal" than JN, emphasizing the tragedy and horrror of his madness and demise.
...This is all just to say that I completely agree with you!
I agree with you, it is a wonderful film. You are a bought full and insightful reviewer and obviously have talent to contribute to the world. I hope you’ll continue to make videos.
I watched Doctor Sleep several times and now I understand it more completely with your analysis. I find that the female characters/actresses hang on to me in my mind with their charisma, all of them, but most especially Rose the Hat/ Rebecca Ferguson. She’s like a malicious whisper that I can barely hear …
Heck, my mind was blown when the hospice patient told adult Danny that Danny is an actual Doctor (Dr. Sleep), when young Danny had always been called Doc.
Can’t wait for Flanagan’s interpretation of Dark Tower.
Wow, this really summed up everything I was feeling about this film, and the Shining as a story in general. Even though the original is one of my all-time favorite horror movies (and books!), I agree that Doctor Sleep is both a wonderful continuation and respectful, even loving homage to Kubrick's version. The callbacks to that first film were purposeful, and sometimes even heartbreaking in the context of the cycle of trauma, overall beautifully executed. And the most surprising thing to me? I actually didn't even like the Doctor Sleep novel lol
Mike Flanagan is the person that got me to realise I love horror movies and I love this movie having read both books and seen the shining, thanks for the video! He deserves more praise
I agree so much with this. His movie, Oculus, was my first horror movie, and it blew me away how exceptional stories can be in the horror genre. I've just been chasing that high ever since. I was more of a reader, so I read Stephen King's books and fell in love with them. It's crazy that the second time I felt so awed was when I watched this movie, made by my favorite director and written by one of my favorite authors.
Doctor Sleep film was better than book. But I think Shining works book better. 😅
Thoughtful, not bought full. I use voice recognition, semi-recognition.
Somehow stumbled into your channel and love your content! But I completely agree, this movie was amazing and I always love to watch the two together as a movie marathon!

I think as time goes... people will appreciate this sequel for what it is... hopefully.
I think they might if ever anyone decides to pick it up again, I think it’s similar to others stories where it wasn’t well liked in the moment but then got more traction as time went on.
Ewan McGregor is amazing and a highly underrated actor
Did you ever watch the longer cut? If so what are your thoughts. I love this movie a lot and echo your sentiments almost exactly.
The Shining is one of the best movies of all time. I liked how Doctor Sleep was a departure from The Shining in style and tone while continuing the story. There’s a lot of truth in the two films.
Paging Doctor Shlep
God I hated Doctor Sleep. My friend and I looked at each other in the cinema at the same time as the lights came up and burst into laughter. Not in a good way.
Would you be intrested in a collab??
Unfortunately, at the moment, I'm not really looking to collab. Obviously nothing personal, my video topics and upload schedule are just pretty sporadic as is right now. Appreciate the sentiment, though!
@@meeptop totally understand man keep up with the great content man
