Hear me out.... My idea is that the game should of launched with 1 mission per freegunner. The mission would give you an idea of understanding of how the characters abilities are utilised best and, because the game is trying to have a story, have it tell the freegunners backstory. That seems like it deals with two things at once for them. Then they can add more missions later and even duo missions etc. Seems logical to me.
That's an awesome idea right there dude legit! Looks aside the characters do have personality and it could help to create that bond you know that thing where a player is like "this right here is my main, i fw this character!" The world building that could potentially take place in this game dude man the possibilities.
