you're talking the truth. I was looking at kits for the World Cup in 98...All teams wearing Nike, eg. Brazil, Italy, Netherlands, Nigeria, S.Korea, USA, all have different individualized designs
you didn't mention the worst part of this thing, the goalkeeper kits, Adidas, Nike, all the brands literally made one design and gave all the teams, including national teams, at most the color changes, but not even Back then even GK could've had unique kits, for exemple the iconic 2006 Buffon kit with italy. Others National Teams like Poland and Iran had puma aswell, but only buffon had that unique design
Those adidas keeper shirts should have Velcro patches on the chest like the refs so if they are transferred to another adidas team, they can take the old badge off and put on the new team’s badge since they’re all the same. 😂😂😂
It’s not even nostalgia. I was born in 2006 and didn’t get into football before 2015. And i still think the 90’s and 80’s kits are much better than the boring soulless commercial trash that clubs produce now
Nike was losing market share to the brand Under Armour because of their base layers. They pulled long sleeve shirts from the market to get people to start buying their long sleeve. It’s rare to find a Nike club that produces any long sleeve shirt.
Adidas only does it for certain clubs. Real Madrid and United comes to mind. Juventus didn’t have them when CR7 signed so we had those awko years of him wearing short sleeves. United brought them back for him. Portugal, I believe is one of the only Nike teams with long sleeves, to cater to their top man.
I think an issue in recent seasons has been weak template design by Nike and Adidas particularly. Those kits you say look the same have far more basic cuts of fabric than many kits from the 2000s and 2010s, and so may appear more bland as a result. Take the Nike Total 90 kits from 2004 as an example. Despite most of them only using solid colours, they still looked bold and interesting, thanks to their different cuts of mesh and fabric. Meanwhile, in 2022, Nike produced a shirt template without a traditional neckline/collar, which ended up looking like a wetsuit instead (highlighted by the colours used for THAT Spurs Away shirt). The reduced number of panels and types of fabric used will have been intended as a way to streamline the manufacturing process, but all it does is leave designers with less options. It's also why most of the better kits from that season were ones that hid the template with loud patterns.
I’ve noticed that Barcelona use their Senyera kits (yellow with red stripes) for 3 consecutive seasons. They used one from 19-20 till 21-22 and they wore one from 22-23 season in the opening league game vs Valencia. I think that’s cool too
I miss the 90s goalkeeper kits. Adidas during that time had some of the best "ugly" gk shirts ever. Now it is just a basic copy paste bland design for every club sadly
Weird thing to say, especially when you see what Kappa used to do with Venezia shirts last few years. Of course, that relationship ended, but their shirts are timeless. If you want good shirts you look by second tier brand like Kappa, Joma , Macron or smth and less popular team like Venezia. Closer to the top and there is no inspiration.
I think ordinary fans on the internet who have never gone to college to study fashion design can create a better football shirt than sport brands. I really don’t get it. Why they don’t ever listen to what the fans actually want beats me. It is as though these sport brands deliberately create cr*p shirts to annoy us.
Adidas removing adidas under neath their logo made me sad. Nike designs during the WC were the worse and the kits feeling n looking cheap is really sad.
I stand with you on the long sleeves brother. Sick to death of seeing those baselayers, especially when there is a short sleeve kit with some sort of cuff and it continues with completely different colour of the baselayer. Thankfully, there's few players who still wear long sleeves so it's not completely extinct. Funny thing - when you mentioned Brentford 's approach to sustainability. Surely if there was short sleeves and long sleeves only, that would mean less fabric, or?🤔
I am a Spurs fan and I had ordered 1991 retro kit and my mind was blown by looking at that beauty. It's beautifully crafted and so much comfortable to wear. And will surely last longer. The current kit won't even last longer. The sponsor labels print will loosen or fade away after few wash (no matter how carefully you wash). Even after spending so much of bucks, we are not assured of long durability kits. I have made up my mind to buy copy kits instead in much lower price.
Ever since I started watching football a couple years ago I’ve enjoyed the MLS kits far more than any other league. There’s been a few good ones in the prem but even with all MLS kits being the same adidas template, there’s still so much individuality from club to club. If we’re being real though the greatest kits of all time time we’re obviously the 90’s MLS kits.
This season there was a team that almost sued the supplier because they signed a deal for exclusive shirts and they reused the second kit from other team except the badge
Agree with long sleeves. Theres always been template kits though that are copy and paste. I guess the big difference is, in the past, is that the template itself was interesting and innovative in itself. The Nike Total 90 template from the mid 00s is a great example. Most teams at the euros or WC those years wore them but the design and colour scheme made each teams identify pop out that bit more, same for clubs.
The most depressing part is that this doesn't just apply to football. Rugby union used to have some incredible kits that non-rugby fans would buy because of how nice they were. Nowadays though, it's just lazy template strips that cost no less than £20 more than the older jerseys
Sheff utd fan here. We stopped using Adidas and changed to eerea and despite a rocky first year in quality and stock, they have become really good for us, ignoring the size issues, cause now we have control over kit designs and can even make long sleeve shirts with them. Plus this is a combination of the ownership and errea, but our shirt prices and very reasonable being about £50 with regular sales
This is a great video in general especially the long sleeve segment- I always rock long sleeves whenever I can, because of Beckham being my favourite player. But I do have to disagree with 0:58. I feel that people who buy the full kit are showing their dedication to the club just in a different way, and I don't like to judge them on what they wear as they're clearly fans and I can respect them for that even if I wouldn't do it myself. There's also the collection aspect as the socks and shorts are still part of what makes a kit iconic. Obviously the shirt is often what stands out most in a kit but it does have to be complemented by the right type of shorts and socks to be truly iconic & having your favourite shirts be displayed with the full kit just adds to its aura especially if you have it in a frame
Thanks mate. Yeah that’s fair enough, was more tongue and cheeky really. Each to their own and at my age now I don’t mind whatever any wears really! Thanks for the comment!
As Karl pilkington said "fat bob in the pub looks ridiculous in a football shirt, and they shouldn't make them that big" facts. They are a piece of sports equipment, for playing sport in. Fat bob does not play sport.
Parents do need to get a hold of things, they should be teaching their kids that they should not be buying kits every season, it’s simply not sustainable.
Love long sleeve retro, got a few of them and I'd play in them and not care haha. Can't wear mine much as I live in a hot country but always like it when I do and they're good to collect. Cuffs can have good features too. I miss the days when kits would last two years. My grandma bless her would always get me kits for my birthday as a child and felt better knowing they'd last two years.
Tbh about the long sleeve shirts, even though they looks very cool and I like seeing them, I don't think they're very practical to play. Even in bad weather, I've always been a shirt sleeve guy, and if things are very rough, under armour is just much more practical. From a fashion standpoint, long sleeves are great, but for playing, not so much IMO
Yeah I’d agree mate, and I reckon that’s why they’ve gone that route. I remember playing in them on Sundays and in summer they’re too hot and in winter they’re uncomfy
@@AlexNoonan987 Yeah. I have one, and the feeling of the sleeves flapping around, specially when you're running, it's very uncomfortable, and in some cases, even if you try pulling them up, they'll eventually keep falling down and will get looser and looser.
they have always done that , they have a few designs each year which they do in different teams colours, its much morre individual these days, i like 60s and 70s kits, i was wondering what happened to long sleves ,i always had long sleeves rolled up when i was a kid, it was totally normal, i like them. man im completely from another era lol
Nike, puma and adidas aren’t great, but kappa and other brands are still producing absolute bangers. I bought the Brisbane roar 2023 (NB) and 2024 red star Paris (kappa), and the new fc Basel kit looks incredible. However when it comes to the big brands, I prefer to buy retro fakes with authentic tags, or the conception fakes made by someone else (I got a red inter kit with black flowers and snakes and it’s absolutely gorgeous). If these clubs/brands had any iq they’d hire these 3rd parties for their concept kits; would be an excuse to print money
It is not nostalgia I was born in 2008 and i have to say kits from the 90s and early 2000s are better than the stuff we get now a few shirt makers make creative ones now but adidas and Nike for example just make the same have a look at goalkeeper kits for example literally every club has the same kit
mate, comparing the man u and forest kit that have different patterns under the red, and then saying the blue everton one looks better doing the same exact thing? c'mon now
Come on lad, the forest and man united one is the exact same template. The Everton one is basic, but it doesn’t look like a training top with a sponsor
you're talking the truth. I was looking at kits for the World Cup in 98...All teams wearing Nike, eg. Brazil, Italy, Netherlands, Nigeria, S.Korea, USA, all have different individualized designs
You can see today that the big manufacturers are only offering copies of the same shirt in different colours.
Croatia!
Adidas removing the 3 stripes on their pants is an act of war
you didn't mention the worst part of this thing, the goalkeeper kits, Adidas, Nike, all the brands literally made one design and gave all the teams, including national teams, at most the color changes, but not even
Back then even GK could've had unique kits, for exemple the iconic 2006 Buffon kit with italy. Others National Teams like Poland and Iran had puma aswell, but only buffon had that unique design
Great point, maybe a part 2 in the future
Jorge Campos would design his own kits for Mexico
goalkeepers in argentina made their own kits
Those adidas keeper shirts should have Velcro patches on the chest like the refs so if they are transferred to another adidas team, they can take the old badge off and put on the new team’s badge since they’re all the same. 😂😂😂
They also wore Uhlsport or Reuch shirts rather than the brand the team had.
It’s not even nostalgia. I was born in 2006 and didn’t get into football before 2015. And i still think the 90’s and 80’s kits are much better than the boring soulless commercial trash that clubs produce now
Personally, I prefer buying training tops these days. They're cheaper and usually have a more adventurous design than say a new home kit
I’d agree, I think they have nicer designs
The changing of kits every season in recent times kinda ruins it. Naturally the higher pricing of the kits now doesn't help either.
In an ideal world, it should be biennial so that designers don't run out of ideas.

i got a 1999 long sleeve barcelona centenary one. grateful for my uncle giving it to me, like a heirloom lmao
The dark age started with the nike euro kits 2016
ALL OF THEM literally looked EXACTLY the same except for the different nation colours of course

Think you’ve nailed it. There’s definitely creativity in lower divisions. All these big team know everyone will buy their stuff regardless
What’s wrong with wearing a long sleeve? 😂😂 People just finding any reason to take the piss - just speaks to their own insecurities.
Christ mate I’m having a laugh. I wouldn’t literally bully a mate if he was wearing long sleeves….😂

Good on you for using the censor on the word "crap", it would of scared me if you left the vowel in there mate.

I feel like some kits are becoming better even if losing the old astatic
The long sleeve thing is why I love watching Man United because I swear half of their team wears long sleeve and it’s amazing
As a forest fan, the last 4 to 5 years have been very lackluster
What happened to simple clean classic?

One thing you can't deny Chelsea is having unique kits every year
Always been a fan of inter shirts, loved the pirelli era, especially the zigzag one, and they've had a "snakeskin" one in recent years. ❤

The worst football shirts I've seen are the Puma minimalist shirts
So they should get mocked for wearing a long sleeve but clubs should bring back long sleeve? No sense there.

the arsenal 3rd kit this season is very creative & funky though, also a shoutout to crystal palace’s home jersey this season:)
I remember when Tampa Bay Mutiny had the skintight Kappa kits. They were nicknamed “the wetsuits.”
