The interviewer is Paul F Tompkins and he's one of the greats of the podcasting world. He has a podcast called Spontaneanation where he interviews someone for the first half and then he and some other improvisers do a longform improv scene loosely (sometimes very loosely) based on the interview. It's pretty entertaining sometimes.
The first few episodes of New girl were uninteresting when the focused everything on ZooeyD, but after a while they focused much more on the support characters and the show is way better for it. Nick, schmitt, and winston really make the show.
Not sure if you've figured out who he is, but it's Paul F. Tompkins. He had a podcast for a few years called Spontaneanation where he would interview a different guest each week, then he and some improv friends would do a long improv loosely based on the interview. If I may be so bold, i highly recommend looking up "Spontaneanation Live from a dentists' (dental?) convention" with Colin Hanks. It's here on RUclips somewhere. Fucking HILARIOUS. 😂
I saw drinking buddies recently and Jake is really good in it. He's like a sexy manly man and gives off a totally different vibe than I get from him here or on New Girl. I recommend it.
1:01 i may or may not have played this over and over again just to hear him say my name and pretend that nick miller is my boyfriend for a blissful minute
I really have a strong feeling the guy that he said killed the audition against him was Jason Mantzoukas 'Rafi' from the League...they always seemed like brothers to me.
Paul: never watched this show before, its a warm, grown-up, great idea for spontaneous, natural interviewing and I appreciate your suit/ tie! :) Jake: We need more actors like you...stay real even when you become a superstar - you encourage us to be ourselves and not fake..ok, I'm rambling...good luck to you - I will be watching Drinking Buddies for sure!
made me wonna watch drinking buddies. caught the beginning of it on TV but i had to go out so i missed, i should look for it on...ehh netflix or something
Everyone says parks and rec. This is great though. I love how sort of "boringly honest" Jake is being here. It's great information. And I love how normal and conversational Jake Johnson is just in general. Similarly Paul F. Tompkins cuz he's just doing all these independent projects like this, things with live near audiences, people who are basically just improvisors and such, so he seems extremely accessible, but his persona, the consummate magnanimous host, welcomes all of us personally, while also raising his status above ours.
sometimes i think this paul f. thompkins made this show for me. absurd, i know, but what else could possibly explain the combination of interviewing interesting actors while drinking some dope cocktails (vodka on rocks excluded)
More I look at him, More I fall in love...
God bless Jake, and god bless Nick.
Jake is such a well spoken guy. And hilarious.
Watching this made me realize how much Jake Johnson improves Nick's character. I just want to hang out with him all day.
I love jake and this interviewer. Such a casual and friendly vibe, it felt like I was just eavesdropping in on a conversation between two good friends

The Phantasm sweet, thanks! I'll have to give some of those a listen :)
Jake seems like such a humble, genuine human being. Naturally funny as well 👌
Jake Johnson comes across as such a nice guy in these 20s prohibition era-themed interviews. Made Man... I submit.
Of course he does
Can we talk about how he literally is Nick Miller??
yup.
A lot of New Girl was improvised as well I think.
Kayla Beshears yep all the nick and schmidt kisses were improvised, at least at first lmaoo
he seems like just the most likeable guy
Jake Johnson plays himself in New Girl...great guy....
I like this style of interviewing; just let the interviewee do their thing.
The first few episodes of New girl were uninteresting when the focused everything on ZooeyD, but after a while they focused much more on the support characters and the show is way better for it. Nick, schmitt, and winston really make the show.
ManbearZig I love Winston so much lol
This guy is honestly a great interviewer! Great rhythm, no anticipating nor cutting the stories. It was a pleasure to watch!

Jake's story telling is awesome
Amazing! I can listen to him talk for hours....He is just so eloquent & spontaneous.
I'm just glad Paul learned that it's not, in fact, "THE New Girl", like he'd said when he interviewed Max...Still love ya, Paul.
Drinking Buddies is a great movie
Awesome New Girl casting story. Thanks for going in depth!
Wow. Love Jake Johnson.
This guy is so real .... I like watching him
I saw drinking buddies recently and Jake is really good in it. He's like a sexy manly man and gives off a totally different vibe than I get from him here or on New Girl. I recommend it.
Anyone else feel weird, watching a post that's 10 yrs old? Like where the hell did the time go?
Holy crap, two of my favorite entertainers in one video... ... why am I just now seeing this?!?!
He seems like such a down to earth dude and that's awesome.
I cant believe he grew up 10 minutes away from where I live....I love him!
imagine a movie with him and aison brie! *.*
He’s 100% from Chicago, just by the way he says it. And I am from there too
Nick Miller is one of the funniest Characters in Years, i love his lines in New Girl.

You picked the right guy to play Nick Miller.. :) love the show #newgirl love the nick and jess chemistry.. :)
Ok so I think it's safe to say that Jake Johnson is literally Nick, or vice versa.
1:01 i may or may not have played this over and over again just to hear him say my name and pretend that nick miller is my boyfriend for a blissful minute
Thank God New Girl gave Jake a second chance during his auditions.
Great interviewer
I really have a strong feeling the guy that he said killed the audition against him was Jason Mantzoukas 'Rafi' from the League...they always seemed like brothers to me.
I think you're right, dude 👍👍
This show is great, it reminds me of that old Dinner for Five show that Jon Favreau used to do.
Wow! That's an Awesome interview! I'm totally going to see this movie.
Paul: never watched this show before, its a warm, grown-up, great idea for spontaneous, natural interviewing and I appreciate your suit/ tie! :)
Jake: We need more actors like you...stay real even when you become a superstar - you encourage us to be ourselves and not fake..ok, I'm rambling...good luck to you - I will be watching Drinking Buddies for sure!
that movie sounds good!!
just to let you know. drunk history the idea and show is based off him
He completely sold me on this movie
yes he played a man who hit on Abed talking about Farscape
So awesome!
made me wonna watch drinking buddies. caught the beginning of it on TV but i had to go out so i missed, i should look for it on...ehh netflix or something
You should watch it.... He is great and the movie is great
dude i read this and then as i scrolled up he was nodding his head aha
Paul, like that rug in The Big Lebowski, a pair of cuff links could really tie your look together. :)
You don't talk yet! PFT is the man!
Should I have one channel for each passion I have?
May 14th?! You friggin kidding me?!
@Pigeon Lake: 3 or 4 Revolution beers can actually mess you up :)
Jake looks the exact same as he looks Nick from new girl but is more sane
Subscribed and a like for you sir.
tension on comedy set AKA two and a half men
Wasn't Paul f Tompkins on an episode of community
Funny how Max plays the 'smart guy' and Jake plays a reasonably dumb character, but it's switched in real life :')
All I hear is Mr. Peanutbutter. Mr. Peanutbutter. Mr. Peanutbutter
He sounds like Ralph Macchio.
Sounds like "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"...

Ah, nicely put 👌I completely agree about Paul. Also fantastic interviewer for sure.
What is the background music with the violin? Anyone?
Ben Schwartz..... Jake and Amir!!!
lol
the interviewer nods his head alot
Is this Ron Burgundy?
sometimes i think this paul f. thompkins made this show for me. absurd, i know, but what else could possibly explain the combination of interviewing interesting actors while drinking some dope cocktails (vodka on rocks excluded)
PFT is the man!
I new it
I wish you had used an exclamation point to finish your last sentence.
The dude is married.
Knew* damn fucking iPhone
" We played a drinking game with cards" - please be honest you played true american don't you, because that would be so much more fun :)
leap of faith? paul calling spiderman plot lines 6 years early
dam that's suffering, jesus ><
Nick miller
Cut it out with the constant panning/cutting camera angles, it's too much. Otherwise a great interview
Don't change cameras that fast! Makes me feel dizzy. It's kinda annoying.
saw the trailer bad story line.
love the show. great cast but watch the volumes on the intro pumper plz. way out of whack. and kind of bad sfx. love the progrum though.
Hipsters love to use the word “ostensibly” and always use it wrong
Knowing he is a drinker really tones down his attractiveness to me. It's not a quality I admire in other individuals or draws me to them.
Seems like a great guy, though I'd say "handling 3 or 4 beers" is kind of... underwhelming.
Im sorru but Drinking Buddies was painful to watch. Terrible movie
I, sadly, must agree. After seeing this interview, I feel bad saying it. They had such a blast and so much freedom. It's too bad I didn't like it.
I strongly disagree
***** I'm happy you liked it! :)
It wasn't a terrible movie. You just didn't enjoy it. Those are two different sentiments.
