This just in, Garou is apparently a new IP. Despite the fact that the Fatal Fury series has always been known as Garou Densetsu in Japan and the Dreamcast port of Garou was called Fatal Fury. It also continues the main story of Fatal Fury that had been dropped for spin off titles after 3 and a sizeable chunk of the cast has direct relations to members of the old cast: Kim's two sons, Andy's pupil, Geese's son being the main character, the secret final boss is Geese's brother-in-law, Kevin is a "distant relative" of Blue Mary, and Khushnood Butt is Ryo from Art of Fighting's apprentice hearkening back to Ryo being a secret boss in Fatal Fury Special. I really need to play more KoF XIII. I really like the way Andy and Kula feel in it, and K' and Joe are always a blast to use. Still most familiar with 2002 and 2003 though.
Metal Slug is actually rather fair once you learn the controls and rules of the game. Vehicle and power up placement is usually planned out for upcoming areas and players are rewarded for risky moves by getting better weapons. Controls are smooth on foot(well, they were in the arcade) and the game always lets you know what attacks kill you and what moves don't. Metal Slug 3's mutliple path system allows people to figure out which route works best for their playstyle and encourages experimentation while punishing stupid mistakes. that being said some of the bosses are somewhat designed around trial and error, but the game normally gives players a vehicle(with health) beforehand, so that it is possible to see how the bosses attacks even work. Its brutally hard and ridiculously unforgiving, but also the finest kind of that type of game. When you finally get good, its satisfying. Metal Slug is certainly not for everyone, that's for sure.
Magician Lord was a thing of beauty. It's artwork was just incredible for the time. I saw the screen shot in an August 1990 issue of EGM and had a Neo-Geo AES in my living room the same year. 1989-1992 were great years to be a gamer!

Story of my childhood: Austria has very strict gambling laws and since Arcade video games have a lose-state, they fall under the designation of a slot machine. Therefore, you can only put them into gambling parlors where minors have no access. So the only time I got to go to an arcade was when my family managed to afford a holiday in Italy all two years or so. And then, I had like 10 quarters per evening for 4 nights. I became a gourmet of arcade machines and seeing some of the old SNKs here really warmed my heart. Good memories.

This particular video, even though it's a review, has a nostalgic value, man, here in my country (Chile) SNK Arcades where a big thing, KoF (specially 2000) and Metal Slug were everywhere, sadly nowadays the impact of pachinko-like machines has replaced all the good ol arcades with these little casinos, it's just plain sad. Anyway, your videos are fucking gold George.
I got the SNK humble bundle as well, but the only games I've gotten around to trying out so far are Twinkle Star Sprites and Shock Troopers. I dove into them completely blind, not even seeing a single screenshot of either game before playing, and both of them surprised me very positively. As a result though, I really appreciate this list because it gives me a good idea of which other games I should try out and which I should avoid. Unfortunate that Shock Troopers 2nd Squad seems to belong in the latter group; I was really looking forward to playing that one just because of how much I enjoyed the first game.
Interesting, I only played that Shock Troopers sequel. Didn't have any idea that the original was so much better, that's why I didn't care to play it, until now, of course. Great video!
Metal Slug 3 is by far the pinnacle of Nazca's amazing series. It has everything they could have absolutely packed into an 83MB cart... soldiers, aliens, mummies, zombies, monkeys, Tons of Slugs (Metal Slug, Elephant, Driller Slug, Marine Slug, Ostrich Slug, etc..)) It even has horizontal and vertical shooter stages! Tons of branching paths, and even a tribute to IREM's (Nazca) previous game In the Hunt. ... ... ... It's really not cheap. You just need to Lear the boss patterns. Such as the one where this guy keeps dying. It's not hard at all. You just have to time the jumps and stay off to the side.
My group of friends and I are just now being introduced to this SNK company because of their modern ports that seem to dominate the Nintendo SWITCH eShop at this very moment. We're very impressed and having so much fun, and I would love to buy a set of more modern, physical SNK series anthologies~!!
Well, it's not an anthology, but King of Fighters 14 just had a Switch port announced earlier this month, and there was that anniversary collection that came out not too long ago.
That's cute Bunny, you took the knowledge from Brennan and so you can tell that King of the Monsters is a wrestling game. You even know what an Irish Whip is now! Super proud.
I got the humble bundle a couple days after this video. And the Last Blade is one of the few fighting games that made me want to master it. It's amazing.
Great video, especially liked the ending segment. The version of the first Metal Slug you were playing there had loads more slowdown than the actual game. Shame these Dotemu games are so shoddy. Also, you are totally right, Garou and The Last Blade are absolutely phenomenal, both in desperate need of fully fledged Steam releases and sequels.
This list brings back so many memories. As a boy living in a third world country in the mid 2000s I used to play these games all the time with pirated CDs that had neogeo emulators and Roms! Since nothing is officially released here its still what most people do to play games. It's sad how we experienced everything 3-5 years after it hit the rest of the world.
Going back to this video, I’m so happy SNK actually managed to bounce back. KoFXIV was ugly as sin but fun to play and sold decently well. Enough to finance a beautiful new Samurai Shodown and the hyper-polished King of Fighters XV. With a new Garou set for release within the next two years and public talks about Metal Slugs’ return, I’m almost getting emotional for how much their hard work paid off in the end.
My favorite thing about this developer retrospective was that, ever couple games, you would snap out and talk about more canonical titles releasing around the same time, in order to provide more historical perspective.
It doesn't matter how great a game is if a player can't get far enough into the game to see said greatness. And Sengoku 3 isn't exactly a beginner-friendly beat-em-up.
@7:17 Ahh yes, the "Sprite Size Wars." I never paid attention to 'sprite size' until I remember reading that apparently Gunstar Heroes was almost axed here in the West because the execs at Sega hated the tiny sprites. I love a big beautiful sprite but god man, the size don't matter. It's the style and the detail!
Which is funny cause in a lot of cases the bigger sprite sizes means its harder to see whats around/ahead of you at any given time when playing a level (CoughSonicCough)
Sengoku 3 was one of the best beat em up game. I think you didn't explore it well. It has 6 stages in total, after you complete all the 3 stage, 2 more stage will appear and then one final boss stage. Sengoku 3 has chain combos( air combos too) and i remember doing around 100 hit combo so its definitely not slow, its just you didn't explore it's mechanics and how the game works.
im sorry but sengoku 3 is a great bet em up, you unlock new characters every few stages, and if you figure out how to play it well you can combo enemies in the air like a tekken game!
A CMVS (consolized MVS cabinet), a MVS multi cart and two Neo Geo joysticks is one of the best purchases you can make for two play couch co-op&VS gaming. It's also a must have if you appreciate pixel art. It'll cost around 700-850 dollars (unless you know how to build a CMVS yourself), but it's so much cheaper than collecting for the AES and you don't have to deal with the load times of the Neo Geo CD. I pretty much stopped collecting for both systems when I got my CMVS, though there are a few exclusives on the Neo Geo CD.
Where's Bust-A-Move, the ultimate Pizza Parlor game? If I'm going out for pizza, you bet your ass I'm beasting some BUST-A-MOVE on a Neo Geo! I love these Arcade reviews. So much nostalgia.

On that Hokutomaru intro screen, the little guy in blue who goes flying when he crashes always tickles me for some reason (I play Garou alot!) - the poor fellow! For anyone wanting to play SNK fighters online, I highly recommend Fightcade - its an awesome program that plays your ROMS and allows you to play against other people online. Its criminally overlooked - check out the (very cool) installation guide here on RUclips.
While KOF is one of the most complex fighters for high-level play, I think it's actually one of the most accessible for newcomers to the genre if you play singleplayer or against someone of similar ability. The 2x2 button layout is simple. Character's move sets are short and concise. The character archetypes are clearly defined and comprehensible with fewer technical characters than most games. The more fluid movement and dodge mechanics make knowledge of I-Frames, breaks, and punishes less crucial at low-level play. The D-Pad inputs are intuitive for their effects and relatively consistent between characters. i.e. spin kicks are usually HCB; rarely any inputs other than QCs, HCs, or DPs; Desper Move inputs are usually just a normal Special but the D-input repeated twice before the atk button While the Drive Cancel/ Hyper Drive system is what makes KOF's combos more intricate than most games, I think the game as a whole is less combo-focused than SF and KOF is still excellent if you ignore that stuff while you learn.
Nice video. Yeah, the emulation wasn't perfect, but I had plenty of fun with the collection. I agree that Metal Slug is a bit cheap but I had some good fun with it. Garou, the Metal Slug games and Shock Troopers (one of the best co-op games I've played in years) was the highlight of the collection for me and well worth the price of entry.

Interesting, I only played that Shock Troopers sequel. Didn't have any idea that the original was so much better, that's why I didn't care to play it, until now, of course. Great video!

because of this i homebrewed my wii just to be able to go through SNK's catalog of the 90s. So far, FF Special is really kicking ass.
Metal Slug 3 is by far the pinnacle of Nazca's amazing series. It has everything they could have absolutely packed into an 83MB cart... soldiers, aliens, mummies, zombies, monkeys, Tons of Slugs (Metal Slug, Elephant, Driller Slug, Marine Slug, Ostrich Slug, etc..)) It even has horizontal and vertical shooter stages! Tons of branching paths, and even a tribute to IREM's (Nazca) previous game In the Hunt. ... ... ... It's really not cheap. You just need to Lear the boss patterns. Such as the one where this guy keeps dying. It's not hard at all. You just have to time the jumps and stay off to the side.
I did not expect this to trigger as many nostalgic memories as it did. Metal Slug 2 was nice man.
My group of friends and I are just now being introduced to this SNK company because of their modern ports that seem to dominate the Nintendo SWITCH eShop at this very moment.
We're very impressed and having so much fun, and I would love to buy a set of more modern, physical SNK series anthologies~!!
Well, it's not an anthology, but King of Fighters 14 just had a Switch port announced earlier this month, and there was that anniversary collection that came out not too long ago.
That's cute Bunny, you took the knowledge from Brennan and so you can tell that King of the Monsters is a wrestling game. You even know what an Irish Whip is now! Super proud.
That ending song is so good, it brings goosebumps. But man these games still look pretty good even today :D
I got the humble bundle a couple days after this video. And the Last Blade is one of the few fighting games that made me want to master it. It's amazing.

Great video, especially liked the ending segment. The version of the first Metal Slug you were playing there had loads more slowdown than the actual game. Shame these Dotemu games are so shoddy. Also, you are totally right, Garou and The Last Blade are absolutely phenomenal, both in desperate need of fully fledged Steam releases and sequels.

This list brings back so many memories. As a boy living in a third world country in the mid 2000s I used to play these games all the time with pirated CDs that had neogeo emulators and Roms! Since nothing is officially released here its still what most people do to play games. It's sad how we experienced everything 3-5 years after it hit the rest of the world.
Going back to this video, I’m so happy SNK actually managed to bounce back. KoFXIV was ugly as sin but fun to play and sold decently well. Enough to finance a beautiful new Samurai Shodown and the hyper-polished King of Fighters XV. With a new Garou set for release within the next two years and public talks about Metal Slugs’ return, I’m almost getting emotional for how much their hard work paid off in the end.
My favorite thing about this developer retrospective was that, ever couple games, you would snap out and talk about more canonical titles releasing around the same time, in order to provide more historical perspective.
Clearly SBH didn't spend much time with Sengoku 3. It's actually one of the better arcade beat em ups out there.
I remember having no trouble reaching 20+ hit combos in Sengoku 3, while SBH speaks as if the game barely had a combo system at all.

It doesn't matter how great a game is if a player can't get far enough into the game to see said greatness. And Sengoku 3 isn't exactly a beginner-friendly beat-em-up.
@7:17 Ahh yes, the "Sprite Size Wars." I never paid attention to 'sprite size' until I remember reading that apparently Gunstar Heroes was almost axed here in the West because the execs at Sega hated the tiny sprites. I love a big beautiful sprite but god man, the size don't matter. It's the style and the detail!
Which is funny cause in a lot of cases the bigger sprite sizes means its harder to see whats around/ahead of you at any given time when playing a level (CoughSonicCough)
Sengoku 3 was one of the best beat em up game.
I think you didn't explore it well. It has 6 stages in total, after you complete all the 3 stage, 2 more stage will appear and then one final boss stage. Sengoku 3 has chain combos( air combos too) and i remember doing around 100 hit combo so its definitely not slow, its just you didn't explore it's mechanics and how the game works.
im sorry but sengoku 3 is a great bet em up, you unlock new characters every few stages, and if you figure out how to play it well you can combo enemies in the air like a tekken game!
A CMVS (consolized MVS cabinet), a MVS multi cart and two Neo Geo joysticks is one of the best purchases you can make for two play couch co-op&VS gaming. It's also a must have if you appreciate pixel art. It'll cost around 700-850 dollars (unless you know how to build a CMVS yourself), but it's so much cheaper than collecting for the AES and you don't have to deal with the load times of the Neo Geo CD. I pretty much stopped collecting for both systems when I got my CMVS, though there are a few exclusives on the Neo Geo CD.
Where's Bust-A-Move, the ultimate Pizza Parlor game? If I'm going out for pizza, you bet your ass I'm beasting some BUST-A-MOVE on a Neo Geo!

Aruze....They own the Shadow Hearts genre. One of the best RPGs I've ever played (and I've played a lot). That series never got the love it deserved.

They also made Faselei for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, which is usually regarded to be the best&most sought after game on the system. And Koudelka between the two :)
+felman87 Aruze is now Universal Entertainment Corp. The weirdest thing is Shadow Hearts and Koudelka are their only console IPs, on top of the handful of arcade IPs they also own. But they do nothing with them, even though they produce pachislot equipment and software.

Never would have pegged bunnyhop for being a wimp who thinks the Metal Slug games are difficult most of the time.
On that Hokutomaru intro screen, the little guy in blue who goes flying when he crashes always tickles me for some reason (I play Garou alot!) - the poor fellow!
For anyone wanting to play SNK fighters online, I highly recommend Fightcade - its an awesome program that plays your ROMS and allows you to play against other people online. Its criminally overlooked - check out the (very cool) installation guide here on RUclips.
of course, garou is a fantastic game, so much so that i would easily put it in the top 10 fighting games of all time

While KOF is one of the most complex fighters for high-level play, I think it's actually one of the most accessible for newcomers to the genre if you play singleplayer or against someone of similar ability.
The 2x2 button layout is simple. Character's move sets are short and concise. The character archetypes are clearly defined and comprehensible with fewer technical characters than most games. The more fluid movement and dodge mechanics make knowledge of I-Frames, breaks, and punishes less crucial at low-level play. The D-Pad inputs are intuitive for their effects and relatively consistent between characters. i.e. spin kicks are usually HCB; rarely any inputs other than QCs, HCs, or DPs; Desper Move inputs are usually just a normal Special but the D-input repeated twice before the atk button
While the Drive Cancel/ Hyper Drive system is what makes KOF's combos more intricate than most games, I think the game as a whole is less combo-focused than SF and KOF is still excellent if you ignore that stuff while you learn.
Nice video. Yeah, the emulation wasn't perfect, but I had plenty of fun with the collection. I agree that Metal Slug is a bit cheap but I had some good fun with it. Garou, the Metal Slug games and Shock Troopers (one of the best co-op games I've played in years) was the highlight of the collection for me and well worth the price of entry.
