Matthew Paul Got to jam two songs with Kenny and Cedric with RL singing at a post-concert dive bar hangout. That was in North Dakota when the boys came up to play in '95, '96, somewhere in there. Anyway, won't never forget that, so wow, I can only imagine getn to sit down, have a drink or two, and playing a spell with a true American legend...
What an origin story.Mississippi Fred Mcdowell says " you want to play my guitar, son?" First, how cool would it be just to be at that party. But then to see one legend light the torch for another legend? Amazing.
I'm glad you did start playing mr. RL Burnside because you open the door for the rest of your family to become fine musicians and for what I see doing excellent for the blues world
I’ve always loved RL Burnside. Not only was he one of my favorite blues men but he had the nicest smile. You could feel the kindness coming from that smile!
I said this before but dang. So pure and simple, when he opens his mouth its effortless and powerful. blows me away every time I hear it. Soothes the soul.
It brings me so much joy to hear him recount this story. It must be incredible to put yourself out there like that, thinking, "Well, I'll just give it my best and hopefully people will enjoy it a bit", and then everyone just loses their minds because your music and your passion are THAT incredible. One of my favorite bluesmen of all time.
That's an awesome story. Can you imagine being at that party with Fred McDowell playing in one room and RL Burnside drinking and gambling in another room?
Need no heater or fireplace by my bed- woman I got........cherry red- need no heater or fireplace by my bed- ( long wait)- woman I got keep me cherry red. My favorite blues verse of all time, with his delivery- and waiting longer than usual for the 4th line is pure genius - I’ve never heard that done. I’m reminded of Johnny Lee saying ‘I’m mad- I’m bad- like Jesse Jame’ in a song by the same title- fantastic. While I’m at it, check out ‘See my jumper hangin’ out on the line’. And I’ve got to praise Johnny playing Drugstore Woman’ and ‘big legs tight skirt’ - from the 50s, and both are little heard and classic. Peace How he thought to pick that name and shorten it is badass.
RL is the real deal for sure. John Lee Hooker (Boogie Chillen) came a bit earlier with this kind of rhythmic groove, and was likely Billy Gibbon’s influence.
Yeah, it does sound a lot like Exile songs. The same kind of Groove! But Mick and Keef would never give a penny of royalties to anyone. They’re incredibly greedy SOBS!
I hear a lot that Fred McDowell tried to suppress/put down RL Burnside. I find it a bit sad and don’t claim to know the truth. I like both artists a lot.
I was blessed to see R.L. soon after moving to Memphis at a festival playing out in a field. A spiritual experience.
The greatest man to ever walk the earth RL BURNSIDE
I had the honor of knowing and playing with RL every now and then. All you had to do was bring him a bottle of shine and the day was set! Amazing guy

ja tu w tym dalekim kraju kocham słuchać twoją muzykę, to prawdziwy blues.
R.L. might have had a problem chewing a steak, but he could rip through lyrics and a melody.
