In Soviet commie block of Jelgava we meet Gatis and we talk about the hard life in Latvia and in living in Scotland. Just like in my native country Portugal young Latvians leave the country to venture off into western Europe trying to earn more money while life in the homeland only gets more expensive by the day. An ex Soviet country in the European Union. We ride the Honda motorcycle only on off-road routes to Iecava where we'll spend most of the week. The smallest house we stayed in but 'the Shire' becomes our favorite place. Peter and Tatjana are straight up characters pulled from the lust for life book. Tatjana Palčuka-Rikāne is a renowned painter in Latvia and we were lucky enough to have been showcased some of here beautiful work.

@@fungo6631 it's not completely untrue what the guy said. In ex soviet countries there is a mentality 'everything is bad' and because of this people don't see perspective and don't chase their dreams. Of course living standards and opportunities in Latvia are worse then in Finland or the Netherlands, but there are enough opportunities to make life better than it is now.

That's because it actually means grass in Latvian!
I'm flying to Riga from Houston Texas tomorrow. The length of days shortens quickly in Sept. and Oct in Latvia. When I leave on Oct 19 the days will be almost 3 hours shorter. Don't drink and drive at all in Latvia. The penalties are very severe and obey speed limits.

@@Tate.TopG. I remember Soviet times very well. It was build on tears and blood. Thousands of people were tortured, sent to Siberia or killed. Including people from my family. German occupation was changed to Soviet occupation. And, yes, that hurts.

I was in Latvia last month, beautiful city, mostly near the center but stuff is kinda cheap and everything else seems slightly rural.
