In my school for the Christmas program, we sung and dedicated to the kids in sandy hook elementary. We had candles with all of the kids names taped to it and at the end of the song we blew out the candles and walked away with our heads bowed :)
Always listen to this version on the anniversary of my sisters passing. Such a beautiful song. Gets me every time. Thank you Grace Potter. beautiful song
Makes me think about my little sister too. Been gone since 1995 but still very much with me. Somehow this version of this song captures the emotion. You will know what I mean.
For me it's my fiancé who passed in 2012 and my mom who passed in 2018. I'm sorry for your loss and yours as well @otman558. I just hope we will all see their smiling faces again one day.
This song came on the radio 5 years ago right after I had to put my cat Opie down. We were taking his lifeless body to the crematory. My mom was holding him while I drove. The sun came through the window and shined a spot right on his heart, confirming his love will always be with me. This song will always be so special to me. ❤
Such a beautiful song. It reminds me of my dad who passed in 2011. Grace deserves way more recognition than she's given. Her vocals, songwriting, and musicianship is incredible.
If the song was powerful with the rest of the band, this piano and voice version is gut-wrenching, tear your heart out, achingly beautiful and haunting. I can't listen to it without crying...
When I was little, my Mum and i would sit on the front steps of our house in the summers and stargaze, I lost her to ALS in 2011, and this reminds me of her so much...
Grace wrote it about a friend who passed away not too long ago. She said she doesn't like to look up at the stars whenever she thinks of her. She says it on her episode of VH1 Storytellers. She also talked about it at a concert she did in Raleigh, which I was so priviledged to go to a few months ago
Okay this is extremely random but I'm hoping someone else out there remembers this... I had completely forgotten about this song until earlier on today when it randomly turned up in a playlist on Spotify. And it reminded me that I first heard this song when a guy sang it on a tv talent show (I thought American Idol but now I'm not sure). I have spent HOURS trying to find any evidence of this specific person and audition, and I have NOTHING. He was a country singer and I think he accompanied himself on guitar. This would probably have been not long after the song came out in 2012 or 2013. I feel like I've totally lost my mind as there really is nothing at all about this out there. I've found loads of contestants having done this song, but none of them have been the specific person I remember. It is utterly bizarre!
I always cry to this song. When my grandmother was alive, she looked at a star every night from Poland, talking to me and sending love and luck... now, that she's gone, i know she's in sky but I just can't look at the stars without crying... lots of love Grace xo
Each of our bodies came from a star - literally. I think when we die we go back to them - added to the universal consciousness and the cosmos. This song captures that perfectly and it has helped many of us deal with the intrinsic loss that comes with life. Stevie Nicks said it perfectly in her song, “Bella Donna:” ‘Don’t you know that the stars are, part of us?” Thank you Grace (and Stevie) for lighting the fires and always showing us the way.
My sis lost her husband. He was my role model the man I wish to be for my kids. The world lost one of the best men that ever existed RIP Donnie Durant.
This song speaks my nights when I think of my partner who passed away, one year ago, next month. I have been listening to this song everyday since I discovered it last week.
Saw Grace Potter in Des Moines Iowa last Friday night....stood.... small venue and we were literally 10 yards from the stage... It was a moving performance and have to say it was the best performance I have witnessed in many years... She is a "Rock Star"
I think of my granpa every time I hear this song. So beautiful. He's been gone a year now but I feel like I can pick up my phone and call him and still expect him to pick up. Seems so unreal sometimes.
This really reminds me of a friend i lost last April, she was hit and killed by a drunk driver..having music when your going through an extremely rough time really helps you get through easier. This song makes my heart melt
Lost my mom in a car accident. I definitely identify with the spirit of this song. It’s very hard for me to hear it, but yet I want to hear it all the time. Grace potter has an amazing tone and voice overall. Thank you for this song
It came to me I'd love to hear me some Grace Potter and The Nocturnals...Great. This is so beautifully presented by VEVO...so nice. Just solid heart and musicianship.
Yep, Amanda Brown brought me here too, she did your song proud tonight! And is bringing new fans your way! I love this song period, and now Grace too! You've already got "the voice"!
I keep coming back to this video for so many reasons, but the emotional hit never dwindles. For celebrating lost loved ones and regretting lost lovers who are maybe still here, there just isn't a better song, period.
Now that I've had the privilege of seeing her and The Nocturnals live, I can honestly say that no videos on RUclips compare to actually seeing her live. I've seen most of the top bands, Springsteen, Stones, Led Zep etc, and they're right up there. Incredible energy, and they really enjoy what they do. I cannot believe how little recognition they have received, particularly here in the UK. They say they will be back in the autumn, I can't recommend them highly enough :)
I ended up here because of The Voice and that great performance by Amanda Brown. I have no problem with that. You know who else doesn't have a problem with that? Grace Potter...sales and fans will only increase. I, for one, am a new fan.
This stripped down version is better than the studio album version. How Grace isn't as big as GaGa or Adele is beyond me. She's more talented than both.
Vocally, I don't think she's better than them especially Gaga. I just think she doesn't get as, much exposure. Remember, a lot of people didn't know who Adele was before her album " 21 ".
Immarocker2477 It's all subjective. I guess my point was more of her deserving more recognition as a star the calibur of Adele or Gaga. I prefer her music and style over both, not necessarily that she has better vocal range or whatever. All are talented, but IMO, she's the better artist and I connect to her music more.
Lady Gaga isn't really that bad of a singer. She's a HELL of a pianist too. It's ridiculous how good she is at playing. Her weird aesthetic makes it hard to see past that though. I'm not a fan of her but I've watched a few acoustic/live performances and was impressed, whereas I thought she was a manufactured puppet beforehand.
i must say that i have been listening to grace for a few years now, and was shocked to hear that some on the voice had never heard of grace. im blown away that they dont get more exposure. i do want to thank amanda brown for singing it and introducing many more folks to grace potter, just read all the comments of the people that have now heard this great artist and her band. i hope this helps shoot them to the stars of success that they severly deserve. i hope everyone love her voice as i do.
I lost my best friend 4 years ago when I was 13. This was the last song I saw her dance to. I come back to this song once in a while and I still can’t make it past the first 15 seconds without crying.
Kevin Sutherland, every time we look at the stars we wonder where you are. Your light shone brightly for 24 years here on earth and I know it is even brighter now on heaven's boulevard! We miss you every day! ♡♡♡♡
to be honest, I just found out about this group from the voice and after going through about 10 songs, seems like this one is the most sincere, either that or i'm just not not used to rock and roll. Any long time fans feel this way?
I don't think she's quite a country singer. It's kind of hard to classify her. She's done some country stuff but stuff like The Lion, the Beast, and the Beat aren't anywhere near country. I think she'd be better classified as just soul music.
Hello, my dream is to be a singer, I have some covers on my channel I know is a lot to ask but could you please check it out? Please help me to come true my dream, I’ll be grateful
Life happens we move on, but I will always think of my brother, how much I love him, and how hard it is to look at the stars wondering where he is. I know he went to far. I just hope to see him again, somehow someway... His ashes don't seem like enough, to never look at his face, hear that laugh, or talk about the stars. I love you Brian Ill miss you forever and ever big bro. Thanks Grace Potter for this perfectly beautiful song. Sad but soothing.
I will always love you Al. You were taken way too young. I will never forgive myself for never telling you how much I loved you. You gave me two sons that resemble both of us. Robert looks like me, but boy Mike sure reminds me of you...sometimes I see you in him when he does those faces...I miss you Al. I wish you were here with me while I have to deal with all this stuff. I won't ever forget you. Stay with me to keep me strong.
This song touched my heart and brought me to a closeness with my son, Jacob who took his own life, December 2013. I weep as I hear this song as I too cannot look at the stars.
She is selling them! I just bought Grace Potter's version of this song. Never had heard of her before. But this original version is so incredible. Amanda did great, but I had to have this version. I recently lost the closest person in the world to me and this version is so touching.
This song breaks my heart. My mom was singing it all the time during my parents divorce. My dad was an alcoholic/drug addict, and he left all the time. She said this time she knew he had gone too far. We were terrified we would lose him for good.

My best friend committed suicide because he was bullied for being gay. I love you for forever Kyle. this song reminds me so much of him. I still cry even tho its been almost a year and a half. I go on 7cups as a listener for people who go thro some stuff. one person asked me what had happened. then he said it was my fault he committed suicide. said I never loved him enough. I cried in my moms arms for 4 days straight. I have always blamed myself. thought of what I could have done to prevent it. I blame myself so much. after he got outta j.h. I only talked to him for a few minutes and then never heard from him again. then 3 months later a kid who hated me and used to bully me came up to me and told me Kyle committed suicide. ill never be able to forgive myself. Kyle, I love you so much. I miss you every single day... R.I.P.
I want to say something comforting, but dont have the damn words. ...instead I'll just cry to this song a little bit and hope peace, love, and comfort find you.
Im so deeply sorry for your loss I want to tell you this: people kill themselves because of mental health issues. No one wakes up one day and thinks " Im going to kill myself" Depression, etc. Im sorry that person said what they said, makes me angry! when someones depressed, they arent thinking clearly. But. this wasnt your doing! Those of us left behind, love and cherish their memory. hugz to all who have lost people.
It does not really matter how we get introduced to this great great song - I did not know the artist nor the song before The Voice and I am happy that Amanda did it justice. And now I will have a new artist to get to know...
I always wonder about the people that dislike something. Do they just do it to do it? I can't see how anyone would dislike this. One of my favorites ... just beautiful!
This is one of the most underrated songs and performances in history. So much beauty. ❤

Same. 🎈🎈🎈🙏
So sorry for your loss 💕
Same here- my brother died 10 years ago today and this has gotten me through many anniversaries. Hugs to you.
This song came on the radio 5 years ago right after I had to put my cat Opie down. We were taking his lifeless body to the crematory. My mom was holding him while I drove. The sun came through the window and shined a spot right on his heart, confirming his love will always be with me. This song will always be so special to me. ❤
it's hard to believe this great rendition of melody and song only got 1 milion viewers...i'm sick with people who didn't notice this beautiful art..
My Dad just passed away. This song...
Such a beautiful song. It reminds me of my dad who passed in 2011. Grace deserves way more recognition than she's given. Her vocals, songwriting, and musicianship is incredible.
I lost my Mum in 2011 also, I know your loss and my heart goes out to you
johannah york
Bless your heart :) my heart goes out to you as well, hun!
If the song was powerful with the rest of the band, this piano and voice version is gut-wrenching, tear your heart out, achingly beautiful and haunting. I can't listen to it without crying...
Very well put. Soul searing. Close my eyes when I listen to this song, and I am transported in to "the dark of the night" looking up into the stars.
Yes!
Maybe this is the best song of the new century. What do you think?
When I was little, my Mum and i would sit on the front steps of our house in the summers and stargaze, I lost her to ALS in 2011, and this reminds me of her so much...
I dedicate this song to my grandma who was my everything. Miss you Nanny.

lots of love Grace xo
Each of our bodies came from a star - literally. I think when we die we go back to them - added to the universal consciousness and the cosmos.
This song captures that perfectly and it has helped many of us deal with the intrinsic loss that comes with life.
Stevie Nicks said it perfectly in her song, “Bella Donna:” ‘Don’t you know that the stars are, part of us?”
Thank you Grace (and Stevie) for lighting the fires and always showing us the way.
My sis lost her husband. He was my role model the man I wish to be for my kids. The world lost one of the best men that ever existed RIP Donnie Durant.

I don’t know you and you don’t know me lol but I came across your comment and I hope you’re doing well 😀
Happy Memorial Day.
Rest in peace Dad. Thank you for your service to America. You are missed so very much.
Who in the hell would give this a thumbs down?
This is the best version of this song. Grace, please release it as a single.
The 319 dislikes are from those with no soul. no taste in amazing music. Grace Potter is a awesome artist!
How is this beautiful talented woman not more famous?
just hearing the first couple of notes gives me goosebumps and chills.. love her.
Beautiful - touching - and speaks to me after losing my husband one year ago.
Saw Grace Potter in Des Moines Iowa last Friday night....stood.... small venue and we were literally 10 yards from the stage... It was a moving performance and have to say it was the best performance I have witnessed in many years... She is a "Rock Star"

She's amazing.. that voice, her songwriting, multi instrumental talent and her beauty. Brilliant!! ♡
this song makes me cry. I lost my uncle Steve back in 2010. I know he is looking down at me
Do we get more than one soulmate in a lifetime? I miss you Allan
Lost my mom in a car accident. I definitely identify with the spirit of this song. It’s very hard for me to hear it, but yet I want to hear it all the time. Grace potter has an amazing tone and voice overall. Thank you for this song
my first time hearing her. whoa she is amazing
Gary Potter it better. Melody is super simple.
Grace Potter is the definition of Underrated
"My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations."
Moved me to tears. Beautiful voice, beautiful song, beautiful lady.

My husband recently died...we loved looking at the starry sky together. I miss him so much and this song is so beautiful like him and the stars.
Joey Martin Feeks, you will be shining so bright upon Heaven's boulevard .
I did not know this song before. Big thank to Nick to introducing this song for all of us.

Stars
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
I lit a fire with the love you left behind
And it burned wild and crept up the mountainside
I followed your ashes into outer space
I can't look out the window, I can't look at this place
I can't look at the stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars, up on Heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all,
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars
All those times we looked up at the sky
Looking out so far, we felt like we could fly
And now I'm all alone in the dark of night
The moon is shining but I can't see the light
And I can't look at the stars
They make me wonder where you are
Stars, up on Heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all,
I know you've gone too far
So I, I can't look at the stars
Stars
Stars, they make me wonder where you are
Stars up on Heaven's boulevard
And if I know you at all,
I know you've gone too far
So I can't look at the stars

I don't know why this version is my favorite! The emotions just shine through
Greatest musical instrument made by man--the piano.
you're so right!
to be honest, I just found out about this group from the voice and after going through about 10 songs, seems like this one is the most sincere, either that or i'm just not not used to rock and roll. Any long time fans feel this way?
Hard to believe this song is some what unknown. Beautiful song
I want this song played at my soul mats funeral... This song is perfect for him. It describes us perfectly!!! ❤️❤️💞💞😢
Had no idea this song this is country or she is a country singer absolutely beautiful you and your voice
I don't think she's quite a country singer. It's kind of hard to classify her. She's done some country stuff but stuff like The Lion, the Beast, and the Beat aren't anywhere near country. I think she'd be better classified as just soul music.
Such a sad song, but Graces voice is so stunning.
Amazing. Just.....Perfect. :)
Hello, my dream is to be a singer, I have some covers on my channel I know is a lot to ask but could you please check it out? Please help me to come true my dream, I’ll be grateful

First time I heard this song was tonight on American Idol and I loved it right away what a beautiful song!!
I'm glad I clicked on this.
What a beautiful song, and singer... From France
reminds me of all who passed to gods heavenly home
This song touched my heart and brought me to a closeness with my son, Jacob who took his own life, December 2013. I weep as I hear this song as I too cannot look at the stars.

I'm so sorry for your loss..can't imagine a bigger pain
It's 2019 and STILL...😥
She is selling them! I just bought Grace Potter's version of this song. Never had heard of her before. But this original version is so incredible. Amanda did great, but I had to have this version. I recently lost the closest person in the world to me and this version is so touching.
aww.. this song could have been a good addition to TFIOS soundtrack. sounds good,.. really.
This song breaks my heart. My mom was singing it all the time during my parents divorce. My dad was an alcoholic/drug addict, and he left all the time. She said this time she knew he had gone too far. We were terrified we would lose him for good.
I cant find this version anywhere!!!!!
American Idol's contestant named Nick Boddingtam (sp?) sang this song tonight. I loved his voice- and was thrilled to find this video of Grace Potter, who also has a very lovely voice! Very moving lyrics.
This song is beautiful but I'm gonna need to know where mama got her shoes from
hahaha right :)
she has a passion ... and we can feel it :)
I can’t find this version in any streaming platform.
I discovered Grace & the Nocs about 18 months ago. Have been obsessed ever since!!
My best friend committed suicide because he was bullied for being gay. I love you for forever Kyle. this song reminds me so much of him. I still cry even tho its been almost a year and a half. +Genuine Love I'm so sorry.....It's not your fault at all. Please don't blame yourself.
Im sorry for your loss. My best friend just committed suicide recently and It hurts. This song reminds me of her. Her beautiful blue eyes and smile.

Heard this song the first time on The Voice, had to come check this out immediately. What a beautiful song, melodically and lyrically.
now this song remind me of Christina Grimmie.
I know you've gone too far so I can't look at the stars
exactly why I'm here, such an inspiration, such a tragedy. the world will be different without her. 💔
Hello World .
This song is one of a few that almost makes me cry. It came out around when my grandma died so it always makes me think of her.
Emily Piriz who brought me here.
Sadly she has out :(
Love Grace Potter and I love this song...I can't beieve Blake and Cristina never heard of it....I wake up to this song every morning!!
brought to you by shelby
I'm so glad I found this song again. I was obsessed with it 11 years ago and lost it. Ahh. I love it so much.
American Idol brought me here
Me too after 5 years
I heard it first several years ago on The Voice.
I always wonder about the people that dislike something. Do they just do it to do it? I can't see how anyone would dislike this. One of
my favorites ... just beautiful!
American idol's Emily piriz brought me here
Her best song IMO and the best version of this song also. She is such a beauty too1
