A detailed walk through video on one way to make a Liberty Ring out of a quarter at home with basic hand tools. An average quarter will work too. Your girl will part with her most expensive rings, before she parts with this one. That is if she's truly into you. A gold digger won't find it so cool. P.S. this is my first try at this, so bare with me. This video is not about the quality of the final product, just the techniques used to form out a ring. You can get as meticulous as you'd like. This ring turned out to be a size 5 and a half. Watch my half dollar vid (linked above) to see a larger, thicker ring.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury own website Home » Resource Center » FAQs » Coins » Portraits & Designs.. bottom of the page. "Is it illegal to damage or deface coins?-This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the U.S. Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent."

My dad learned how to make these rings while serving in the U.S. army during WWII. He started making them again after his retirement. I never watched the process, so I'm glad I can finally see how he made them. I see it takes patience. Before my dad passed away, he made a ring for each of his six daughters. He etched a heart in mine. I cherish it more than any store bought jewelry. Great video! Thanks again! :-)
Your dad prob done it how my poppa done it... With a spoon. Anyone can do it with a hammer.
I've got almost 10 hrs in my quarter, tapping with a spoon
That's heart warming I'm sorry for your loss

Dirty hands, clean hands, I don't give a shit! He's a thoughtful guy to show the world how to make a ring out of a coin that may have some special sentimental meaning or you just want to do something fun with your kid to get em off the computer for a moment. Then when the kid grows up, he can say, "I made a cool ring with my dad." Whatever. He took time to post this video; I learned something and I thank fencekid for it.
Me too!
+Me Cilly great very great comment

Yup.
Thousands of these rings were made in WW2 by sailors and marines with free time on warships. Lots of them were wedding rings. Picture three hundred dudes waiting in the chow line while banging their spoons on quarters. The old timers had a method of making the entire thing with just a spoon. Somehow, I suspect freezing the coin, they are able to separate the outer ring from the inner disc. I suspect this has been done since the first coins were made. Thanks for the vid, Fencekid.
The way i make them is you get a rad that widens at the top and you still a hole in the coin, You put the rod through the hole and tap it with a spoon
I use a spoon, it rounds it off nicely

All the comments of wash your hands and dirty nails.. Wtf he's working with coins and tools!!! I guarantee the money n coins in you're pockets are dirtier than his hands

I only carry uncirculated coins. When I coin roll hunt I usually look through circulated boxes and then send the normal coins back to the bank. Sometimes I get an uncirculated box and if it is a common date I will just carry a few with me.
Jesus. Some of yall have never seen someone work with their hands before. You really think he just has his hands look like this 24/7? He is working with metal. You know, the metal shavings and polishing you just saw in this video. Thats like telling an artist that works with Pastels or lead pencils are dirty. Ever seen hands that work with charcoal? realStoneEm Destroying money is not illegal destroying nickels and pennies is illegal since the melt value is twice what it is worth and everyone was melting them down and even if 1% of all pennies are melted down it will cost the tax payers 40 million dollars. Also I found this online
This is covered in 18 USC 331. It says that whoever fraudulently alters coins is guilty of a crime. The key word there is "fraudulently." If you alter a coin with the intent of defrauding somebody, you're guilty of a crime. If you alter or destroy a coin you own for reasons other than committing fraud, then you're just wasting money.
The origin of this statute goes back to the days when coins were made of precious metals, and their value was proportional to their metal content. In those days, you could shave some of the metal off a bunch of coins and melt it down to get an ingot that you could sell, while still passing the coins off as legal tender. The law exists to deter people from doing that. Today, coins have no intrinsic value so the practice of shaving them for their metal is extinct.

It is not illegal to destroy/deface USA currency. It is illegal to destroy/deface it and pass it off as legal tender.
The more you know!
Also, great video!
actually no, it is illegal to destroy and deface us currency. The reason behind this is because it's is the Treasury's job to print out new money and destroy old money and there always has to be a tiny bit of inflation for a working economy, If people or businesses started destroying large sums it would threaten that economy. It's not a big deal if a few people do it but do you think it would really be a good idea for a company to turn quarters into rings and sell them? It would hurt our quarter circulation and the government would be wasting money minting excess quarters.
nowknow No, if you destroy a peice of US currency, your atchually raising the value of the coin as there is less of them, and since the US treasury doesn't pring out money everytime something is destroyed, then its fine
"Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service."
This means: do not try and recirculate it. Currency is lost every year (misplaced, burned, etc.). If you try to circumvent currency that has been defaced in some way is against the law.
So I'll point it out:
"... intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued" from the first paragraph.
"Defacement of currency in such a way that it is made unfit for circulation comes under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service."
Clearly stating you cannot try to re-circumvent the defected currency back into the system.
I don't know why this is hard for people to understand. Source: moneyfactory.gov
People who think its illegal explain how Disneyland has had a machine squishes a penny and makes an oval Disney coin?? They have had the same machine for at least the last 30 years that I can confirm!!!
I agreed with you.. Those machine are common in many amusement parks.
Yeah.. it is damn annoying to read those "OMG it is illegal, go to jail, bla bla" stupid comment all over the place.
It is technically illegal, but I think it's one of those laws like jaywalking.
Here is a direct quote from the U.S. bureau of engraving and printing website:
"Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. my dad began one of these in the 1950's! I have it, unfinished, and now I know what to do with it :) thanks for the video! and hard working men have hands that prove it...
1) you would have an easier time if you mounted your striking surface. Each of your strikes are losing part of the force through absorption in the padding underneath. 2) It is FAR easier and quicker to drill out the center of the coin, and then using a rubber mallet, turn the coin material on edge by striking it on a steel mandrel. You can also size the ring on the mandrel to get a perfect fit. This technique allows you to have the writing on the outside of the ring which looks awesome.
Ya mean like this? ruclips.net/video/7Q8aokoIH9Y/видео.html

Criss Rosenlof everyone has their own way and their own preference on how to do things. Most of the time you may find a way to do something that’s much easier, than someone else that’s doing it the same way you did it. Doesn’t mean it’s wrong though. This way is just more easy for him to do.
I remember my dad telling me that when he was in the navy, that ring making, using this method, was a fairly common practice. He said that you would usually begin the process at the start of the cruise and during down time, hammer away at your coin using one of the galley spoons. It was a means to cure boredom during long cruises and by the end you had yourself a souvenir to mark the voyage.
Interesting. Back in the day (pre-1980) they called these 'prison rings', because it was one of the 'trade skills' you picked up in state prison. My uncle was a master of the 'silver ring', 'wood 3D photo', and 'velvet paint over' (aka velvet Elvis mural) arts. He did 3-years for grand theft out of high school. Now, he's worth about $4 million, and just sold his jewelry shop. Don't EVER think crime doesn't pay - it bought his mansion, Mercedes and Hawaii condo - all from learning the basics to jewels and silver smithing in prison.
that’s awesome
There was something rhythmic and soothing about the super sped up tapping sound. Just me? Oh well

Beautiful work. Making nice rings is fun. I took a summer jewelry class when I was 16 and spent the whole summer making a beautiful sterling silver ring with a red stone setting. It was one of the nicest things I ever made. On the day I finished it this pretty girl sweet-talked me into loaning it to her for a couple of days and I never saw it again. She claimed she lost it. That was 40 years ago and I bet the bitch still has it.
Hands of a real workin man, thanks for the tip i'll keep my eyes open for older quarters so I can try this myself.
*****
You won't find them easily from a bank (if at all anymore, since they take them out of circulation). BUT - if you know someone who works in cash retail, your odds jump about 1300%. ;)
I used this video as a guide and made one for my girlfriend for her birthday. She loves it. Polished it up so it is shiny. I just measured her favorite ring and hammered a quarter down to the right size, then drilled and filed out the center. Made it a little too small to begin with, then after I gave it to her and had her try it on I continued to file it little by little until it was the exact fit. She wears it every day and appreciates that it was hand made. Makes it more sentimental. Good gift, I recommend doing it.
Rock On Romeo! Way to hustle.

Untill about 4 minutes of the video, I thought I would see something like
"Now, I've been hammering for 40 years...we can clearly see the silver mutated into a new alien element...just keep going..."
I remember making one of these rings in the 60's. I made mine a lot slower and it came out more rounded. Once I had it sized properly I started tapping/hammering the coin while tilting the coin 20 degrees which resulted in a domed rings. I then used emery cloth to smooth out the ring. Thanks for the memories.
This is inspiring! Thank you :)

Thanks for your video. Just a quick note for anyone in the UK - before 1920, British shillings were made of sterling silver, and they're almost exactly the same size as a quarter. I've bought some through eBay in the past, and they weren't very expensive. Cheers!
If you're gonna be working with 90% silver coins I'd suggest drilling and sanding inside of a shoebox or something to catch the dust and bits, it's still 90% silver and can be reclaimed.

Step one, find a super rare coin.
Step two, beat the crap out of it with a hammer for hours.
Step 3 get a really average ring...
Why not, get a crucible, a decent butane torch/bunsen heating device.
melt it down, remove impurities in the silver, pour into a ring shaped mould, and let cool. tada!
Better yet, go to Mordor, beat up frodo and get one made of gold with weird writing on it. lol
Or just get one form Wal-Mart
Super rare? You can buy silver quarters at any pawn shop (or online) for about $3-4. It really is not definable as 'Super Rare'. Seriously, this guy doesn't deserve your shit. In fact your shit shouldn't even exist, because it's stupid and ill-informed. \(.-.)/

I don't understand everybody getting upset about "defacing government property" or "ruining a historical item." Like shut the fuck up. Nobody cares that you made something cool out of a damn quarter, a fucking quarter. FROM THE MID 1900's!! These are NOT "historical" items and I can guarantee you'll be able to find a quarter from 1964 or earlier in circulation with no issues. Go worry about something that actually matters and leave this guy alone
Agreed! plus its not against the law because he is not passing it as another form of currency... So it is 100% legal and the fact is quarter rings are freaking amazing plus people sell them anywhere from 15-58 dollars
***** I'm not saying that EVERYBODY will go spending them, but most people don't know their worth and will go spending them like nothing. I looked in my change jar after watching this and found one out of only a few. So by that I would say at least 1/10 times there's a quarter from 1964 or earlier
Hmm, I must have been lucky. I don't usually check my change. Sometimes there will be one that catches my eye and I'll save it somewhere else. I didn't think they were very rare at all
They are actually pretty rare, due to the fact that people have been collecting them for years ever since they stopped making them out of silver.

lol everyone saying clean your nails, he most likely works in a shop. He works with grease and dirt. HE'S GOING TO HAVE DIRTY HANDS. Everyone gets dirty and I think it's actually very manly to have hands like that. I get hands like that when I work on cars in my dad's shop. I see men with huge muscles and pretty girls at their side but don't know how to change a flat. I bet next time he's driving a girl to his house and asks her if she knows how to change it, she won't be with him much longer. (:
+Richard Bodtmann exactly, most teens don't even know how to change a tire on their car. that moment they get a grease spot on their finger the world's over. wait until the moment you don't have the money to call someone to change it for you and they are stranded.

So instead of melting it down and using a cast, you waste all that silver by drilling out the core.
Maybe he takes the excess from that coin and others, then melts that and casts it into something bigger.
***** Did you watch the video? All quarters, 50 cent pieces etc are made of real silver if made before 1963.
***** It's not really a waste since because of the low mass of the coin, there is overall very little silver in it.
Also, which do you think is more likely to be a plausable home build, using a smelter and a cast, or using a hammer, a metal surface, a drill, and a file? Plus, if you do it his way you get it with the letters and numbers on it. If you simply wanted a silver ring it would be easier to just go out and pick one up for like $ 30 instead of melting and so on...

You're losing a ton of energy using that towel to soften the impact on the table. Go onto something that wont get damaged from the pounding if you want to go faster on this project.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Just dampening the force :)
I thought just the same! But what can you expect of a guy that waste all that good silver to the trashcan?! He's clearly a REALLY stupid guy.
r d'B He's hardly wasting it. In fact, he's increasing the value of it. He's turned a $10 coin (with $8 of silver in it) into a ring that's worth whatever someone's willing to pay. I bet there are people who would pay over $100 for that ring, and even more.
cwuzii Or.. Hear me out on this, it was made with a quarter. He defaced the coin which itself is illegal. And its not $10, its $0.25. You can account for inflation but if you used a really old quater anywhere, they still recognize it as a quarter. And plus I would rather have a 1963 coin then a cheap ring when I could just melt it down and make more then one/coin. If you would pay $100 for this, you are pretty stupid when it comes to handling money, especially since this can be made with 2 rocks and something to hollow out the center.
Razzman When i said $10, i was talking about what the 90% silver might be worth, it's probably less. Yeah, the only cool part about using this rind, is the fact it's 90% silver, and the way the writing stays on the inside of it. That wouldn't happen if it was melted.

To make the process more ergonomical, do you think you can carefully sand and use a (somewhat flexible) glue to attach like a small wooden stick as a handle, to hold on to while you spin and hammer the coin?
My grandfather served on a mine sweeper in the north Atlantic during WW1. He hammered a 1918 florin into a ring using a spoon. Amazing given the life expectancy was about 6 minutes. Thanks for the video.
for anyone who is curious one 90% silver quarter is worth about $3.50 today
could you link us up to where to find one at that price? that's a great price. I can't seem to find a decent 90% quarter for under $8. Thanx in advance

That's the melt value for the silver. The fact that it's a quarter is what gives it more value. You can buy "scrap silver" coins on Ebay, which are basically silver coins that are so worn or damaged that they are of no value as a coin to collectors.
For those who don't have an anvil, the ball hitch out of truck works great.

man you aren't kidding!
Who saw the bug moving?
you are my inspiration for ring crafting!
I learned how to do that while in the Army. Drill the first hole for an 10-24 bolt an inch and a half long, and add lock nut. That gives you a nice handle, and better control rotating the coin. I recommend a 4oz hammer. You want to tap, not pound. We used an old magazine to cushion our upper leg, which served as an anvil. In the Army we didn't have a lot of hand tools. We used a teaspoon from the mess hall for the tapping. When you get the ring down to the proper diameter, then you can drill a larger hole, and file the rest of the center to the proper ring size. Having a full collection of jeweler's sample size rings, and a tapered ring mandrel helps get the size right.
Put a slight rounded shape crosswise to the outside, and polish both inside and outside, mirror smooth. People are always baffled as to how you managed to get the lettering that way.
My first one using a quarter was a bit skinny. So the next one I used a Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Makes a nice wide ring for my finger. When I got home I made one out of a quarter for my younger sister. It made a nice wide one for her small finger.
I make one every once in a while. I prefer to not use any power tools, except for the drill to make the center hole. That give me a lot of pride to say I made it all by hand.
@Sk8er Dude If you are going to be doing a lot of different projects, you need to get some files. Visit your local hardware store. But lacking that you can use sand paper, various grits. For the inside to the ring, use a piece of dowel with sandpaper wrapped around it, in place of a file. But a file is much easier to use, is faster, and lasts a long time for future projects. Keep an open mind. After you have made one, you will understand how to make the next one easier.
