Thanks Jade. It really is a fascinating subject. The history, the technology, and the fact that we have gone through the evolution of this process gives us a good foundation. As you know, from my recent Patreon message, I was asked to master an old 90s song for vinyl. The guy only had the mastered version from that time. It was so compressed, that the waveform looked like a solid block. The drums had virtually disappeared. I used iZotope Music rebalance to separate the stems as best as it could, then I worked on the drum and bass tracks to improve clarity, then added them to the original mix. Then for the mastering, everything above 16 kHz was cut, and below 50 hz, too. The bad notes will cut a wider track which is what governs the time, the higher frequencies can cause a hiss or distortion. It was a good outcome and I learned so much in the process.
