What a ripper of a movie and such believable acting! The film industry has lost a lot since those mighty days of cinema entertainment. I'm going to recommend this film to all my friends. Hey, no foul language either. Not half bad for a 72 year old movie. Many thanks for making it available to us in 2021.

They're driving North on Bridgeway, past the shipyards, Madden & Lewis, Subchasers, and Marinship, Liberty ships, later Arques and The Gates. Eventually many Bay and Delta Ferries were drydocked, beached, and scrapped.
The Vallejo was rebuilt as a houseboat and the home of Alan Watts.
The Charles Van Damme became a Rock Venue as The Ark during the late 60's and hosted many bands of the San Francisco era including Big Brother, Country Joe, Moby Grape, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Dan Hicks, and Quicksilver.
It was later bulldozed, but the boiler, stack, and sidewheel remain at that location as a memorial to the vessel.

They never thought of the most obvious way to establish what happened the night of the accident - the two guys with the Bekins Moving Van saw Jim Torrance get into Williams car and drive from where they stopped down to where he crashed into the fuel truck.
Maybe the Bekins guys might have said they could not identify whether it was Williams or Torrance, but the investigators never asked.
I suppose they left that out of the plot because it would have simplified the case and reduced the suspense in the courtroom.

The whole idea that they let the wife go and prosecuted the husband was ridiculous. They did not have one piece of evidence to suggest anyone murdered the guy! The prosecution had a laughable story that the supposed killer jumped off at the last moment. It really irked me!

It's a "Darling, I'm home" greeting that a husband and wife might do for each other when one or the other comes home. The man was heartbroken over his wife cheating on him to the point of trying to conspire to murder him, he cherished her up until he realized she didn't care at all. It's not like he used her as a doormat.

Perhaps the two only see the fire from afar. Given the amount of traffic on the road, it's not clear if they recognize that it has been this one particular driver. They can see from afar that an ambulance and police have already arrived, assuming that it's fine if they continue their own journey on a different course. When they turn over the briefcase, they can already be far away and still fail to grasp what has happened, simply forgetting the incident with the seemingly mad fellow. After all, it is already the next day. Perhaps they do not even find a police station themselves, leaving the business of turning over the briefcase to others without revealing their identities. Those turning over the briefcase perhaps don't remember of what company they have been, for example because they have not seen their vehicle. We do observe how they're nervous not to get involved, when one of them says "Don't touch it!".

I like this old movie, especially the white Packard convertible. Back when Packard was the premier American luxo boat. But, the story is a stretch to believe. That this two timing woman would choose a young, pennyless drifting murderer over a nationally known Executive with a fancy apartment in San Francisco, handsome, powerful, and drives a Packard convertible.

Lots of implausible things. Sure he drives his car into a truck at 60mph and jumped out at the last minute and lived, that's a real plausible accusation. He gets assaulted and doesn't ask for help or call police. But it was very entertaining, I watched it to the end and loved how Mrs W got destroyed.

@@johnnycalifornia9790 There is also the weakness that men who have seen the culprit and have clearly noticed him as behaving unusually do not appear as witnesses testifying that it wasn't Williams - although they have contacted authorities and in doing so have provided a central piece of evidence. Have there not yet been driving licenses, in those times, with a help of which these two should have been able to identify themselves?

At 48:46 the policeman is reading a San Francisco newspaper and the headline reads "Oaks beat S..." that's a reference to the old Oakland Oaks minor league baseball team, back in the old days when there were no Major League teams on the West Coast. S... might mean the Sacramento Solons, both Oakland and Sacramento were in the Pacific Coast League.
