you can also reuse the seeds for a second batch of gel (and after blend them up with some oil to make a hair mask). an almost 0 waste hair product!

I make a flaxseed gel blended with aloe vera and caster oil for my husband. It works just like a store-bought men's setting gel, but it's much better for the hair. For myself, I use basically the same recipe shown in this video as a pre-shampoo mask, which I leave on for about 30 minutes to an hour before shampooing. It gives a wonderfully soft, shiny texture to my mixed wavy/semi-wavy hair.
Two suggestions for making flaxseed gel for any use:
First, regarding straining, yes, use either cheesecloth, or even better, a nylon nut-milk strainer, but also, unless you really need a super thick gel, don't cook it for quite so long: I simmer mine for maybe 5-6 minutes tops. It strains quite easily and still gets very thick once it has cooled.
Second, to even out that goopy, eggwhite quality in which some parts feel gelatinous and other parts feel thinner, mix in about 1tbsp of oil per 2cups gel while it is still warm. I like to use a thinner oil like apricot or jojoba, but if you have very dry, porous hair, you might experiment with something heavier like avocado. Adding a little bit of oil also helps to prevent that "crispy" texture when you use it as a leave-in, and so long as it's just a little bit of light oil, it won't affect the hold or weigh down the hair. (Of course, if you want to use it as a pre-conditioner, as I usually do, you could also double or triple the oil for extra conditioning benefits, since it will all be shampooed out anyway.)

I was thinking this too, that mixing it with oils and other nureshing products, should make a great thick hair mask like ”store bought” consistensy. I’m considering trying this :) And also making a gel for my husband :)

I actually put the seeds in the strainer and lower the strainer in boiling water keeping the seeds in the strainer (or put the seeds in my stainless tea infuser). When you see it thicken just remove the strainer and no squeezing needed. I put it in ice cube tray and freeze the extra. When I need some I can just pop a cube out of the freezer and thaw.

Another tip: I use organic gels including flaxseed and what I do is, after it's dried in my hair, you can actually soften curls by using a silk scarf and scrunch the curls with the scarf. I don't touch my hair with my fingers, I just use the silk to gently scrunch the crunch out. It leaves my curls very soft without drying them out or causing frizz.❤

I love flaxseed gel and have been using it for almost half a year. My family and I went on a trip recently and I couldn't bring my flaxseed gel so I had to use comercial gel. My hair hated it. I needed to wash that out. I usually make a batch of the gel and freeze the extra in an ice cube tray with lid. Makes it easier for me so that I don't have to make it again in a while and I can control how much to defrost so not to waste it.

You can boil the same seed again with less water and extract more gel from it....and since its a highly hydrating gel it works as a super food for your hair and best part is you can add rice or moringa or fenugreek seeds to it while boiling...it makes your hair soft and strong though you cannot leave it on your hair for too long since it has protein in it....but if you add rosemary or fennel seed you are good to go....i just love flaxseed gel and think its a gift from nature....i literally quit using eco hair gel n just use flaxseed gel on my hair and what can i say.....it has made my hair soooo soft. I just love my hair now😊

I tried out a flaxseed gel today and I'm amazed! I never thought it'd actually be like a gel, but it looks a lot like a gel I used to buy at a local drug store (a cheap, big pot. But didn't have great hold). I used 200ml water, 25 grams of whole flaxseeds (I tried broken/crushed flaxseeds, but that turned into a snot and was very hard to strain xD It stil works well though!) and a few drops of lemongrass essential oil for scent.
I'm used to having either a LOT of frizz or extremely stringy hair after using a gel, letting the hair dry completely and breaking the cast. But this gel didn't look too bad when the cast was on (I could low-key leave it like that!) and when breaking the cast, my hair was smooth, hydrated and held it's shape a lot better than usual!
Restyling is easy by applying a bit of water or a bit of extra product where needed.
After years of trying to tame my manes, I was ready to give up on wearing it curly altogether, but I'm glad I found this recipe!

I have an old version of an Ankarsrum mixer and I have strained mine with that. It was so much easier!
The meatgrinder attachment to it has a strainer! There probably is one for a kitchen aid or similar as well. It's usually used to make apple sauce and things like that.
Otherwise I can recommend using a (clean) stocking. And something you can press/pull it in between to get everything out from it. Like two chopsticks. It is messy but worth it.
I have a plan to make a larger batch and freeze in larger ice-cubes trays and take them out as needed.

I made for the first time, but did somenthing wrong, maybe i left much time boiling. So, I did a second time and look "ok", but i put less seeds than was required and because of that it's very light (the color). I'm gonna shower my hair tomorrow. I have a 3c medium hair. Wish me luck!
    Edit:
I DID! It looks really hydrated. Next time I apply more to the sides of my head (it's a little "dry", remembering that I have high porosity hair). I mix with a little of grapeseed oil on the ends of my hair (It's my favorite oil).

Your hair is very similar to sisi's in the 1860s (except she used henna to achieve a more copper chestnut but I assume her natural shade was similar to yours)
I often tend to overcomplicate how certain historical figures would curl their hair when the idea that this particular person had naturally curly hair and the subtle wave is due to the length and the fact that it was braided most of the time is just as plausible and a much easier way to achieve the look ^^' I'm too used to seeing people from the 20th and 21st century and affluent people prior to that with their hair altered that I forget to assume that the person just didn't have the same texture as I do

Don't waste the seeds, you can eat them, blend it into your smoothie or put them in your oats
I haven't been so crazy about a hair "product" as I am with flaxseed gel since discovering Amla. Flaxseed gel has repaired my hair that I thought was beyond saving. I have low porosity, extra fine hair, that got ruined 6 months ago when I tried to cover terrible plant based dye with a synthetic hair dye. I've had so much hair fall since then that I've felt embarassed to leave my hair untied because it's got so thin. All the oils are a no-no as leave-ins, like many other products even if they aren't supposed to be heavy - they always end up making the hair look greasy. I have now used flaxseed gel for a week, and my hair is silky, looks and feels much fuller and the damage seems to be minimal. Plus it defines wavy hair very nicely. Of course I need to be careful with not overdoing it because of fine hair, but still, it's a 9/10 for me. (Also: it's so easy and cheap to make)
Thanks for your content, because of you I switched to washing my hair with clay and my scalp has never been happier

I use the Wavy Girl method and the only non-natural care product I use, ever, is mousse, which I apply to my wet hair to keep the curl from falling out when it dries (my hair is very fine and, without a product like mousse, the weight of my hair pulls out all the curl, except in the ends or when it is very humid). Have you tried chia seed gel? That is another option I would like to try.
