  • Back in 1980 I entered my Abstract designs for my graduation Art Exam.
The exam board were baffled by what they saw.
    How did they judge me?
Find out what happened and hopefully how I helped change the way Abstract Art is understood and taught in schools.

we had an art teacher in college that was frustrated with having to give grades without being given or having objective rules. he could never be sure if he was being unfair or whimsical and wanted to establish some kind of set of rules as a guideline that we students knew how to prepare and what was expected to get high grades. we also were expected to use those same rules when trying to evaluate and analyse works of art. if for example a painting is very abstract and we do not know the artists's intention (is it a doodle, or a profound statement on life and death, or maybe both, or neither? :) ) all we have to go by is structure and sensory psychology. we can ask questions like "what catches the attention? why? how? where is the attention led to? how? why? are there contrasts? groups? shapes suggesting direction? repetitions? (a)symmetries? what about textures? dimensionality? depth? optical illusions?" etc. DOES IT MAKE THE SYNAPSES CRACKLE? :D is it interesting, does it emotionally resonate? projecting that onto your situation: i think you had their synapses sizzling!

Blimey David, that's a very comprehensive and gripping comment to the piece. I will confess I had to look up the meaning "synapses" (showing my lack of education) but YES, I think you summarised the dilemma I set them rather splendidly.
From a painters view point I am thrilled my work has been stimulating enough for you to give such wonderful evaluation, I'm slightly bowled over, what can I say but "thank you".
It gives me hope I'm not totally doo lally after all ! Cheers Vik

Yes, you're absolutely right, I caught them by surprise ! It's a good sign when art makes people think and talk. There is a risk regular Art can get stuck with the same old famous paintings and Artists, so it's VITAL we create and try new things which eventually become accepted by the general public (I don't care about Art experts, galleries or museums because they are always lagging behind) I paint for the public to enjoy. However it's a long long path to reach everyone willing to look at new styles but historically it's always been that way.
A MASSIVE thanks to you for your lively (made me smile) comment. It's exciting people like YOU who I paint for.

Hi there, Firstly thank you for taking time to view the video and comment 👍
Will admit I had to Google "Zentangle" as I'd never heard of it before now. (I learned something today !) Yes I can see that's a very good method for creating a drawing especially for beginners.
As for me, my drawings have always been like this since a child, quite complex. I first started doing them using a toy called "etch-a-sketch". You use two nobs (one vertical and the other horizontal) to etch a mark on a screen, I loved it so much I wore two out lol.
Generally when drawing my mind is free wheeling, often not even thinking about the drawing at all. I use music a lot to take me to another dimension and my hand just goes on automatic, I'm rarely aware of time and I enter my own head space where anything is possible. There are no rules to stick to, no restrictions, a piece of paper is mine to do what ever I want on it, if you think about it, that's quite a treat as few things in life are without boundaries.
With this philosophy I feel it keeps my work fresh as even I don't know what's coming next lol.
I hope that might give you a little insight and I genuinely appreciate you asking the question, this is why I decided to use RUclips to reach out to people and share my work.

Delighted you mentioned your Etchasketch. I wore out many as a child.thats all I wanted for Christmas. I spent hours on it and especially enjoyed scraping off all the “stuff” so I could see the inner workings. Am now an artist myself. Thanks for your video!

.... And I thought it was just me who did that to see the inner workings lol. Ah that's brilliant, great minds eh..... Must have been good training for us in later life as Artists, that's really amusing to know, welcome to the "Etch-a-Sketch Club" 👍

How old were you when you made this?

    • @VikPaints
      @VikPaints  28 дней назад

Good question.....I would have been 15 years old and I started drawing complex designs from around 8 years old mostly using a regular biro (ball point) pen. We didn't have drawing paper so my dad let me draw on the back pages of his sales order books from work as he was a sales rep. Eventually I got my first set of paints at 16 (I saved up for them). Fond memories when I look back and drawing still makes me very happy and reminds me of those days 👍 Vik
