The attribution of "soul" is personal - some people feel as much of a connection to their first Casio and have become lifelong Casio fans in addition to their Grand Seiko 9F and their F.P. Journe 48mm; they are not mutually exclusive except to watch snobs. Soul is nice for automatics if you're prepared to deal with a $500 - $1,000 service just so it can keep inaccurate time, and forget about the flood of under $300 automatics; no one I know has ever paid going rate for services on an under $5,000 automatic.

I recently bought a Longines Hydroconquest 39mm Automatic. I was seriously considering buying the Quartz version for much lesser, but I knew I wanted my daily to be an automatic. The ritual of winding it everyday keeps me grounded. Rather than becoming an accessory I slap on my wrist without much thought, I take the time to 'wake it up' as I prepare for my day as well. When the day is done, it goes to sleep like I do (if I leave it be long enough). Having to wind it forces me to take a pause and remind myself that, like my watch, I too need to be prepared for the day. This isn't a lifeless consistent machine like I am not, rather it's like another entity that shares my days.
I love automatics for that reason, as I love my quartz watches for other reasons. Both deserve respect. Peace.

IMO, we're living in great times (har, har) when people have all sorts of super accurate digital tech at their disposal but can still satisfy that longing for a mechanical solution. And not just the rich: You don't have to buy a Rolex or a JLC to get an excellent mechanical piece on your wrist. I've been a quartz user for years and years (child of the 70s and 80s, go figure) but I am super-glad to have re-discovered mechanical watches. Perhaps it's just my imagination, but they do feel rather more special to me *because* they can be more temperamental and require a bit more attention.

A really good video shortly explaining differences between quartz and mechanical movements, but still fully covering most important technical details.
Nevertheless, I wish to add up some more technical facts and my personal experience between these two movement types. One of the unmentioned but extremely important advantage of a high quality mechanical movement is its reliability, which actually is much better than the best commercially available quartz movement because most of the quartz movements rely on a battery power, and user never really knows the actual quality of the currently equipped battery and if the watch will stop suddenly because battery ran out much earlier than expected, due to a production defect of the battery itself. This why you would not wish to go scuba diving with a battery powered quartz diver-watch. But even if you just do a office business, it is really frustrating to find out that your watch started to run extremely slow or stopped, which happened to me couple of times because the battery was defected (stopped 6 months after last battery replacement, expected run out time was more than a year). A high quality and robust automatic mechanical movement will prove much more reliable in a way it will not stop while being on hand, at the expense of practically acceptable accuracy level of up to +4 s/d average deviation for the high-grade movements. In case that a good mechanical movement start to fail, usually this happens gradually by watch being more and more inaccurate or in case of weight-rotor fail it can be observed through the transparent caseback.
I wish to note that there are indeed autoquartz and solar powered quartz movements which do not need batteries, but they rely on additional and usually less reliable electronic components, accompanied by large capacitor, which together have a chance of randomly and suddenly failing after 5 years of running time, and the wearer can never tell if some of the electronic components is at the end of its life.
Finally, by my experience, the extremely cheap quartz movements are not that accurate. In my elementary and high-school days I had a 60€ robust chromed brass-case Casio quartz watch. I was disappointed that it gained a little bit less than a minute per month, and practically I needed to set it every month to the accurate time (for comparison a 130€ quartz based Festina, which I own, loses around 2 seconds per month). Also I have a nice brand new vintage looking quartz wall-mounted clock which gains even more than a minute per month. I also own a 50 year old hand wound vintage watch (Peseux 7050 movement) which is recently serviced and regulated so well that it gains on average a bit less than 2 seconds per day while wearing and while in resting position. This means that it gains less than a minute per month, better than those mentioned cheap quartz movements.

I like your summary of mechanical vs electronic. I have various watches, both analog and digital, but are all quartz. I now am beginning to understand the appeal of a traditional mechanical watch. The design has an honoured history, a heartbeat and a soul. I am going to venture into history again. I'm considering a Vostok, because of their long history of making mechanical watches, and also a Seiko 5, because I think they are an inexpensive example of precision and quality in mechanical watchmaking.

    • @WondersofWatchdom

Well done video. The whole “soul” concept when talking about watches is like bringing up religion or politics. Logic and reason get thrown out the window, replaced with feelings and emotions. For example, if a Rolex’s beat rate of 8 per second is more valued than a more pedestrian watch’s beat rate of 5 or 6 per second, then would not a Bulova Precisionist’s second hand beat rate of 16 per second be even more valued? How about the virtually infinite beat rate of a Seiko Spring Drive movement?

I have fallen in love with a 1 hand style watch (Kulte Silver Generation), I was wondering if Botta-design is considered to be a good manufacturer of watches.
For clarification I am a budget, low end shopper. I don’t want to spend more than $200 on a watch, but the only 1 hand watches I have found are between €500 & $1000, way out of my price range. Do you have any suggestions?
The only reason I am considering the UNO, is because I got water in the Kulte while washing my hands.

don't know about that. when it comes to time keeping, accuracy and accurate tech = quality. art is fine, but i prefer the accurate soul of my cheap watch. some old tech does have a near tangible benefit (in areas like cinema, photography and music), but 80,000 dollar watches are primarily for jerking off and nothing else. of course, the preservation of watch history is valuable, like all things history.

Objectively quartz is really better. Far more accurate, much cheaper, far easier and cheaper to maintain, more complications, bigger selection of watches, can be made much more compact, far less damageable by shock, etc.
But man just wants the beauty of things that seem more complicated and harder to make, so mechanical watches continue to live.
I appreciate both although my favorite watch is an automatic. Specifically an Invicta Pro Diver 9094OB. It's mechanical and yet it's relatively cheap to maintain, very reliable, reasonably accurate (±5 sec. per day), and has a shock absorber mechanism, so it has some qualities that make quartz great but at the same time it's mechanical.

The reason to buy a mechanical watch was portrayed on Northern Exposure, when ex-astronaut Maurice Minnifield buys a 400+ year old tower clock, and discovers that he also has hired a “technician” to repair it so that it could be accurate to better than 10 minutes per day. His first thought is to replace the movement with a proper quartz movement, at which point the German technician steals it to hide it away from the crass American who wants his clock to tell time, not enjoy the history it represents.
The businessman who spends thousands of dollars on a watch does so to demonstrate that he can, and he is too important to care about the watch’s accuracy, as he has underlings for that.

    • @WondersofWatchdom
      @WondersofWatchdom  2 года назад

Cool story! I checked out a RUclips video of the clock you’re talking about. It would be horrendous to see a beautiful old clock replaced with a quartz movement.
One thing I would add is that most people who spend thousands on a watch DO care about the accuracy, but they appreciate the fact that a beautiful, well crafted, purely mechanical watch can be accurate to a few seconds or less a day.

I wear an apple “watch” now (really it’s a wrist computer - I’m old enough to remember that my “watch” is more powerful than top of the line laptops were 20 years ago), and it’s too useful to trade it in for any mere time-piece. I joke somewhat, since I deeply appreciate the workmanship that goes into a mechanical movement. I completely understand spending a few hundred dollars more for something you enjoy the aesthetics of. When watches get into the 10K+ range, the wearer has chosen to make a statement. Specifically. that their minor personal accessories are more valuable than an entire year of work from someone making minimum wage. It's gauche at best and at worst is a major red flag.

But you can get a great Orient mechanical watch for about $200, and a very nice Invicta for less than that.

Frankly, "soulless" is the word people throw around when they've lost the argument. Mechanical movements are aesthetically attractive, but as far as function goes, quartz watches kill them in every way. I have a Rolex that stopped working because it needs insanely expensive service and needed to be set all the time anyway. I'm not even sure I'm going to bother to get it serviced and working again. The tech quoted me -- I swear I am not making this up -- at $800 to $1000 MINIMUM plus they tried to tell me that it wasn't an original dial and that they would "have" to replace the dial if they serviced it, putting it up to two freaking grand! AYFKM?! For a watch that functionally gets its ass kicked by the Eco Citizen quartz I'm currently wearing that doesn't even need a battery or any service of any kind?
Rich people get watches like this because if you've got that kind of money, you don't need to be on time anyhow, so your watch is just there to show off.

    • @Cortesevasive

yeah its a gimmick and a cashgrab. If it was cheap auto movement, thats ok the price is ok, but those expensive mechanical movements are cashgrab, if you make calculations you end up paying something like 10-30euro a month to maintain it.

While I agree with everything in this video, I'll add one reason to wear a mechanical/auto watch. Today, everything is connected, bluetoothed and "smart". So called smart watches are getting more and more common, therefore making it impossible to escape social media and communication for even a moment, email, messages and events always making themselves known instantly. Wearing an automatic watch is, for me, a little rebellion against all that "smartness". A chance to be left alone, no facebook, no texts, no emails, no reminders, no stock tickers, just gears and cogs powered by broccoli.

To me mechanical watches are artistry. The complexity of some of the more refined and complicated movements are so amazing and beautiful to me! The first time I cracked the back of a mechanical as a kid to see what was underneath I WAS ASTOUNDED...DUMBFOUNDED. It was like gazing into the universe for me and my passion for watches was born in that moment. In contrast....the first time I opened a quartz...eh....my reaction was a little different. If I remember correctly I curled my lip and exclaimed "EWW WTH IS THIS"?
But as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate quartz in its own way. Makers like casio do amazing things with them. But eventhough I appreciate them now...nothing...I mean nothing, will ever compare to a Jaeger-LeCoultre or a Patek Phillippe movement. Great video. Thanks.

i need real watches, and i prefer quartz over automatics. there is no such thing like real watches or "unreal" watches.. every watch, that tells time is in first place a real watch. and a lot of quartz watches are horological significant, like the casio f91-w, the seiko astron, the whole g-shock series and so on. even luxury watch brands produces quartz watches (Patek Phillipe, Omega, Cartier, Breitling), or have in the past produced quartz watches (a lange und söhne, rolex) - the horological history is allways driven by two ideas: 1. build the most accurate timekeeping device in the world and 2. build the most complex and high end jewelery in the world. the first idea is, what people like Gallileo Galilei or John Harrison have in mind and is perfected with quatzwatches (like the Citizen Cal. 0100) and atomic timekeeping (atomic watches are in parts also quartz watches), the second one with watches like the Zeitwerk vom A. Lange und Söhne or the Pathek Phillip Grandmaster Chime. I apreciate both of this Ideas, because both of them are important and beautifull from a technological, historlical, physical and artistical standpoint. and for me and my needs and taste, a quartz watch is what i need and what i like. so please, dont tell me, i have no understanding of horology, and please stop telling anybody, that "who have an understanding of watches thinks quartz watches are not real watches" - that disqualifice you and tells everybody, that you have no idea or understanding of watches and watchmaking

Their treasures to look at. …Most of people that purchase let's say a Rolex may never even see inside. And the face of the watches today made by any machinery can be amazing as the tooling of today is so precise.
So now you can have a cheap watch with a nicer looking faceplate than a Rolex for people like this that never see the insides just a point of gloating for how much money they spent… A true owner of this watch who loves it will be somebody in the hobby that can go inside and appreciate it. I have a brother-in-law that buys expensive watches that don't look any better than any other watch but he sure to point out it is expensive so look at me …
knowing nothing of what's inside . I appreciate the mechanics and I actually do open mine. But on an everyday level a quartz is probably better as long as it lasts 20 years… Oh by the way my expedition scout came and I am passionately in love with it. The one I have is flawless for its faceplate the stamping turned out flawless and indigo also flawless without that little gap at the bottom … Even my secondhand lines up so I got lucky. Really I really love it. Oh and thanks for talking with me I got your reply and I even watch this video which I thought was really important what a fantastic video. I wanted to be a watch collector but you know how it works? You always want to upgrade it started to get expensive. My best wristwatch was a 1930s Lord Elgin in mint condition.
