When i worked at a bookstore i had a sweet little elderly lady come in looking for this book. I was a bit intimidated
Shes probably seen a lot more in life than you ever should so she's a trooper!
I’ve been this customer, buying a book about how to sew teddy bears in the same transaction as American Psycho.
intimidated over what?
@@paulelroy6650The kind of nonchalant-ness with which a sweet old lady would ask about a book like this at the store, I’d assume 😂
do not get on her bad side lol
I love the part where The Slob says "It's Slobbin' Time" and made the book sell 2 slobillion copies
This shit had me in stitches and then I jumped off a bridge
I like when Slob said, ‘Vera, I am your Slobber’.
I'd love to make a request that you do slightly spoiler heavy summary at some point in the vlog (maybe put time stamps so people can skip). I honestly can't actually endure these extreme horror books but my morbid curiosity does push me to want to know the barest details of the depravity. A lot of your analysis is a little lost on me just for not having as much of the plot.
I feel the same. I can't endure heavy things like that, but I want to know more 🙈
I just commented the same thing! I want to know what’s in the book without having to read it myself lol.
If I remember correctly the worst thing in the book is making the main character eat her newly aborted fetus.
Me too, I'm never reading this but I'm interested in what people read and are interested in
I like this format and would love spoilers because I’m not reading it! I can’t handle reading extreme horror but do ok with someone telling me about it.
AMEN, give us those sweet sweet spoilers
SPOILERS. ALSO GRAPHIC
The main character Vera and her husband are trying to have a baby, and to save up for their future she becomes a salesman for a Bissell vacuum. She goes to one bad house and the man there takes her and tortures her. He works with a cannibal company and he kidnaps women to grind them up into meat to sell to rich people overseas. He beats the shit out of her, causing her baby to die and uses the vacuum to suck it out of her. There’s another woman kidnapped as well, they devise a plan to escape which goes wrong and the other woman is killed. Vera is brought to the barn in the back to be turned into the canned food the cannibals eat, and she plans her escape by shoving a bone inside of her with the sharp part facing out to when he tries to assault her again he hurts himself really badly. She runs up to the grinder area and dodges him as he runs after her and he falls into the meat grinder. She escapes with her life just barely, but after everything the slob did to her she ended up pregnant and since she wouldn’t be able to conceive in the future she decides to keep it.
@@roy5al Thanks, I think. Lol! That was gruesome but appropriate you taking the time to give me a synopsis!
I would love the reaction throughout the read, with deeper analysis during key parts of the book (like, "Okay, this just hit me - we need to talk about this!"), and maybe more at the end.
i was honestly thinking the same thing
Sometimes, i miss life with no kids. "O, it's only 3:30 in the morning? I have time to read." Those were the days.
You’ll get there again someday when they go to college. I now stay up to 2am reading and I love it!
Same! 😩😩 I miss my life too
Just found out about this genre of horror literature. It kinda reminds me of Brutal/Slamming Death Metal but in a book format. Will definitely ask my local occult/horror/sci-fi book store about this kind of stuff the next time I stop by.
There's actually a name for it, splatterpunk. Has its roots in 80s shock horror books. Paperbacks From Hell by Grady Hendrix explores a lot of the history and evolution of this style if you're curious how it got started.
reminds me of goregrind too
I really like the deep dive format. Maybe you could have a 'spoiler talk' section at the end of your video that is clearly signposted?
Some critics: Some horror books are gross for gross' sake, they are worthless.
Same critics: Art should be made for art's sake, otherwise it's propaganda.
Even if a books is gross and has no other meaning but to disgust the reader, it should not be seen with contempt but as a worthy pursuit. A work of art only need to want to exist for it to justify its existence. "Why did you write that disgusting novel?" "Because I wanted to".
Gretchen Felker-Martin has done some great writing on this exact idea. I wouldn’t consider Manhunt extreme horror, but she’s definitely immersed in all of it and has some great ideas on it.
@@rooster423 Thank you! I will look into it.
"Baby In A Blender" is one you should check out if you believe this
@@FizzieSprite I already did. But I am not talking about being able to endure or even enjoying a work, I am talking about satanic panic and double standard. A poem about flowers is never asked to justify its existence, but this kind of books (and movies, and games) are always unfairly scrutinized.
@@vagabundorkchaosmagick-use2898 "unfairly scrutinized" is insane taking into context WHAT the book is about.
I like the deep analysis because I don’t wanna read this stuff but it’s fun to hear about the plot synopsis and imagine you suffering though it lol
The in-depth one book reading vlogs are great and would love to see them continue! Especially for books that you suspect will need a deeper dive and more thorough discussion. The multiple book vlogs should continue however because I like how you rank them at the end, it helps me to decide what to put on my TBR.
I read an older novel once called "Slob" by a different author, about an obese serial killer on the loose and an obsessed detective tracking him down. It was really very good. I like cop vs. serial killer stories.
I actually just finished this book the other day and your initial video on extreme horror miraculously showing up in my recommendations has actually caused me to find a genre of book I actually enjoy reading! So thanks for showing me the joys of reading again! And I adored this book as much as I adored Playground :3
The end of this book was glorious for me. It's not common that the women who are tortured in extreme horror and splatterpunk books get a revenge plot, and Vera is a STRONG woman. I think the most hard hitting point for me is that Beauregard specifically gets you attached to this couple before he ruins their future. I have read the second book and its mostly about the Son and not Vera but it does show their marriage struggles after everything that's happened. It's written really well and is still good but but The Slob is the better one. I also feel the way he added the other stuff to the story at the end was to leave an opening for future books related to that bit.
Did it really end well for her, though? Yeah she killed him, but her body is destroyed (possibly life ruined) and she's pregnant with his nasty baby...
@@armandothegreat21 I didn’t say it ended well for her, I’m just glad I got to see her get revenge and escape with her life.
If you want an extreme story where (one of) the abused girls gets revenge watch The Seasoning House. It's probably the most vile movie I've ever seen (except a Serbian film maybe) but the girl gets her revenge and carries it out in a brutal fashion
@@jevinday I’ll have to look into that!
Got so excited when i saw this video pop up in my tab, i instantly clicked!! Personally i love more of these one-book vids, the review feels more casual & in depth plus we just get more time to let whatever horrifying information just happened sink in properly instead of instantly jumping into the next one. ^^
Yay, beautiful show! The amount of times I drop books is absurd. Quote of the day. Everyday. Haha. Yah, a book at a time is better than 5 books shallowly described. Thanks, Creep.
Your personality makes this almost pleasant lol. I enjoy every video!
The shirt is so perfect!! Love it!!
Playground was my intro to extreme horror and I have The Slob on my Kindle list. You dropkicking the book midway has encouraged me to read that next, thanks for the review 😂
Love the deep dive format...but also like the 5 in a week. I can't wait to read this. Love extreme horror with a story. I just read 100% Match and I have some questions...I laughed at things I'm sure I wasn't suppose to.
Thank you for your service in reading these books, some of these are just so beyond what I want rattling around in my head lol
I definitely prefer your analysis as opposed to your reactions. Reactions don’t really tell us anything, and as a literature fan it’s always more interesting to provide to or experience the feedback of others. I’ve loved your extreme horror reviews and definitely want to see more of them, but your insights and critiques are always more exciting than your reactions.
when it comes to extreme horror, i love the more analytical side of things
Read The Slob earlier this year, loved it. Just got done reading The Cuck too, also worth checking out.
Blood Meridian for sure deserves one of these!
First - Another great video; per the norm. You have a knack of making even the craziest of books, like this one, approachable. It helps that you are not strictly dismissive about the content. And look beyond the extreme passages. Like you sift through the flotsam and jetsam of gore and viscera and find glint of a real message.
Second - Did I miss a video or IG post where you did a new horror gear haul? The first crewneck you wore: "INTROVERTED - But willing to discuss extreme horror." Is just so dope. So kudos on copping such a unique sweatshirt.
Lastly - (Not an extreme horror recommendation but still...) Every video I watch of yours I look to the lower left and see all the King novels. Out of all the his books (and I have read them all) my eternal favorite is The Dark Tower collection. I would love to see a video(s) going over the novels in that series. Each entry has a fair share of horror and adventure that only King can do so deftly - IMO. OF COURSE, this is if you have the time.
omg. I'm a HUGE book nerd so much to the point where I don't even like to throw away any books I don't need anymore so I just donate them to the library everytime. so seeing you kick that book gave me a small shock lol
I know!!!! I cringed so hard
I love all of your videos so much and you have turned me on to extreme horror! I read Dead Inside last weekend and loved it! I've since moved on to It's Me, Charlie and have been enjoying it despite how grossed out I get :) I can't wait to read Playground and then maybe read The Slob but I'm nervous to read that one more than anything lmao I was wondering too, where did you get your sweater at the beginning of this video (the skeleton extreme horror one)? I love it!
Thanks so much for your extreme horror uploads!
Deep analysis is great. Good vid.
I think I liked the sequel of this book "Son of the Slob" even more! Some disgusting scenes there as well (and for me personally even more disgusting overall). Highly recommend!
i enjoy the deeper dives of one book versus the shotgun approach to many books. but honestly do what works best for you! reading 5 extreme horror books back to back seems like it might wear on your mental health lol
I just came across your channel and am already addicted. Fantastic videos and watching you react to those books is the best. Also, you dont need many cuts when you talk (not like others how cut every second word they say). Very fun experience :)
Dead of Winter boardgame! I recognise it from the brief description. One of my favourites! 😁
Bless for the name drop 🙏
Your the reason why I read this book. Thanks 😭👍
I'm curious if you might be willing to check out Yellow, it's also by Beauregard. Has a very Straw Dogs and Death Wish premise, about a very meek, wimpy but good intentioned man who's timidity results in him being constantly walked over. After a home invasion he finally snaps and turns into a scary, scary dude on a quest of vengeance.
I never see anyone talk about Yellow but i think it's maybe Aron's best. Very gruesome, very bleak.
YESSS I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
Anda I love these videos but I know a lot of them I probably could not handle. Would you ever consider doing a full spoiler section (if only for the extreme horror). I want to know more details but I just know I can't read them.
I haven’t even seen the video yet but I have to say the title gave me a chuckle
Dead of winter? Neat. Y’all should try Nemesis.
Im fairly new to the channel so I'm not 100% sure you've covered this book before, but if not "The Summer I Died" by Ryan C Thomas would be a great book for one of these extreme horror analysis type videos. Thanks for the great content!
I would love an extreme horror tierlist at the end of the year!
I doubt I'll ever read it. I do like the more in depth look at one book. Here's a thought I had while eating ice cream and watching you. Imagine if Frankenstein were brand new today and you just read it start to end.
I do like these longer more detailed reviews! But I was thinking maybe you could do a non-spoiler review first, for the people who want to read the book/don’t like spoilers, and then you could do a spoiler-y review for people like me who are morbidly curious but will never actually read the book lol. Either way, great video!
I’m glad you and your friends had fun playing Dead of Winter, it’s a great game!
You know so much about storytelling. You should be a literary agent. If I knew as much as you know about books, I'd be a bestselling author. I enjoy your videos.
Ah, excellent. I just got thw audiobook version! Can't wait to be horrified!
I really like the individual reviews like this, more indepth :)
Video and eyelashes on pointt❤❤
Ah you played Dead of Winter! Love that game. It's awesome :)
It’s scary that I knew what game she played the moment she said her colony was overrrun by zombies
@@Justdave1472 Yep, we're definitely nerds cut from the same cloth 😄
Haven't read it and no intention to, but you asked a question early and this is my answer, I like you to read-a-long a single book at a time. I think i need to recharge my Kindle, there's a couple books on it I need to recommend to you, Flesh Gothic may be one, by Edward Lee. Want to try Sacrificed to the Demon by Christie Simms? Beast erotica, not sure I should own up to that one. Another rec is The Last Citadel by K.M. Ashman
I like this style of reading vlog, personally.
5:33
Im going to hazard a guess that this was in reaction to the infamous vacuum cleaner scene?
Is it available with a less graphic cover? Because I’m considering reading it and I don’t need to expose the people around me to that image lol
Just read this book yesterday. Very quick read, which is a good thing both for content and pacing. I thought it really started out great. The setting and the backstory were good and gave it a creepy feel when you sort of knew what was coming next. From the middle of the book on the story declined. The brutality served no purpose other than to gross you out. Unlike a book like American Psycho, where there is a deeper meaning that follows the entire way through, and the brutality of it helps get the meaning across. This book had that potential but dropped the ball midway through, instead opting to go with an ending that veered in an almost more deranged direction than the initial reason you'd think the slob was killing people. Turns out he's just a hired goon with a tiny d---. This book just feels like so many missed opportunities for something truly great. Also, I'm pretty sure after that ordeal Vera would never have been able to become pregnant again, and if, miraculously, that somehow happened - she'd have known it wasn't the original baby. I have no intention of reading the sequel, but I did like enough parts of the book to consider trying another book by this author.
I really enjoyed that book too! It was absolutely gross, but still a good read, I really liked the voice the author gave to Vera, she felt like a complex and real person with fears and dreams and emotions, I really like his wordy writing style, I definitely have to read the Playground one too. To be honest, I didn't see these parallels and cycles while reading, to me it was just a gross story for the sake of telling a gross story, and I like that too. Not everything has to have profound, deeper meaning, sometimes you just wanna write a book about disgusting things. But your review made me think more about it, and yeah, there is something more to this book than I thought. Doesn't change my enjoyment of it, but it does make me think more about its story
Slam metal in book form, I’m excited for it to arrive.
I have to ask: Was the boardgame you played with your friends Dead of Winter?
Arrrggh I tried reading 'son on slob' after reading 'playground' but apparently I have a limit when it comes to SPOILER...necrophilia!..so yeah.. absolutely loved your reaction 👌
I liked watching your reactions whaile you were reading and I personally prefer the deeper analysis of the individual books.
I like the deeper dives, personally...
Was about to start a different book but now I’ve got to read this one lol
Nice book kick at the beginning. Sounds like it had it coming.
bummed i bought this as an e-book so i couldn't kick the book like you did unless i wanted to punt my cellphone into the sun
Lol you kicked that book to the moon
I want someone to review Mutilation Song by Jason Hrivnak. It’s not extreme horror but it’s different. It left me with a bad sort of feeling it’s hard to put my finger on. It’s very intelligent and fast paced even though there isn’t much of a plot. I never see it reviewed I always see the same books. The author only wrote one other book that I know of and he only publishes in France now but I picked this one up at Barnes and noble a few years ago. I think the best way to describe it is a demonic stream of consciousness.
I like the commentaries, so that slow videos with more deep analysis, for me it's better.
I’ve got a food order coming and yet I’m watching this, I hope I don’t lose my appetite cause good lord
Just started the video but, your jumper! 😂 love it! Where did you get it from please?
I love spoilers 😅 so maybe a spoiler section at the end of videos?
I’m so sorry for not Helping with the decision because I like both forms either at the end of the week or the way this video is structured!
I hope you read Black Farm by Elias Witherow some day. I would love to hear your thoughts after reading that one. Thanks for another great video!
If I had to choose I'd plump for the "in depth single book review" but fortunately I don't have to choose!
So random but what face cleanser do you use bc you have really nice skin !
This has been on my Amazon wishlist for a while but the premise makes me hesitant to buy it 😅
I've read few books from this authour, The Slob is the only one I have never been able to finish. The disgust and emotional drain reading this gets me every time I try to finish the bool.
Do you think you'll ever read The Bighead by Edward Lee? I feel there's more than blood and guts, even though the way it plays out is bizarre lol
0.09 - oh I must read this!
I’m really happy I found your channel. Made me start reading more and you’re hilarious. 🖤🫡👏✊
the last sentence in this book made me drop my kindle
I'm interested to know what is considered freezing in Los Angeles (?)
More detail about 1 book is best for me!
Yay. More And a ❤
If you haven't, you should read "High Life" by Matthew Stokoe. He's the same author as "Cows". A disgusting but actually pretty good book; it's definitely one of my favorites as a fan of fucked up literature.
This one is on my list to buy! Thanks for the recommendation.
Because of this video, i read this book.... And i have to say it made the top of my disturbing books list. I really enjoyed it.
I am currently reading "Mother Maggot" from Simon Mchardy.... And its right up there with the slob in the vile sense of explicitly disturbing and graphic.... Also, like the slob it was a very easy read, only about 140 pages. If youre looking to dive deeper into the extreme horror genre i reccomend it.
Bless your heart for putting yourself through these books. There is a term for this type of fiction. It is called Splatterpunk, coined in 1986 by horror scholar David J. Schow (according to Wikipedia). While I am a huge horror nerd, this is my least favorite subgenre.
Ok, so I watched morpho's review of Playground which basically covered it's whole plot (would definitely recommend watching it if you haven't) and thought it was pretty alright all things considered, but I got through like the first 5 minutes of their review of this one before noping out
I'm a bit surprised that you enjoyed this one so much. I felt like the very end moment sort of cheapened the book, making it into a sort of inescapable torment for Vera that she can never overcome. The book has a sequel that basically proves that point. But this is kind of why I rank Playground over The Slob, it doesn't pull that cheap maneuver just to force a response.
I think a nice balance of deeper looks and multi reads would work. Not every Extreme Horror Author is Beauregard or Stokoe, after all. Word density, author reputation, and topic all might play a part in that. Maybe you can even get cute with it and theme your multi-reads! School, animals, hospitals, sex work, babies in blenders! The topics are endless!
I recently read extreme horror novel "Psychic Teenage Bloodbath" by Carl John Lee (foreword by Judith Sonnet) which certainly lives up to it's lurid title but which also includes a sweetly moving sapphic love story! Highly recommended.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Is Dead of Winter the boardgame by any chance ?
Personally I love both styles of videos where sometimes you just run through a bunch of interesting new titles I want to check out, and then sometimes something speaks to you to the point where you’re compelled to make a full analysis and I love them both ❤
There is a second one called son of slob would love to hear what you think about that one and I love how you kicked the book 📕 love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
I have been slowly getting into these horror and gorey books and I was considering this one and they say to not judge a book by its cover but I actually hate looking at this books cover its eerie for sure xD however when it comes to people and this book it feels like for most they are either hot or cold about this book they like it or hate it which is crazy.
What’s the name of the zombie board game you played?
There seems to be a follow up 'Son of the Slob' x
Haven’t read this, but the title Slob that I’m familiar with is by Rex Miller and it’s sequel Slice. Still pretty hardcore stuff. I’ve heard of Playground, but haven’t read it.
Great vid!! I'd love to know the name of the zombie game you played with your friends if you don't mind?
This was the first extreme horror book I read and literally nothing I’ve read since has affected me the same way. Still the only one to make me physically gag too
I thought you were going to avoid extreme horror for a while after that 1 week extreme horror binge that left you permanently scarred 😜
agree, the ending chapters made it a bizarre conspiracy that seems to have no movement in the second book...
Really good video and yes analysis would really add more to the videos, your thoughts make these really good.
You should REALLY REALLY directly read Son of the Slob, i think it's actually a greater book... better character material in it.
It should have been actually one big book... Vera, vera vera... Beauregard must not like woman w that name
I feel like with the playground its uneedingly wordy on purpise to give it a lil bit of liminalness
It kinda just sounds like a POV of Jeffrey Dahmer
