Ha! I was thinking the exact same thing when you brought up Alien Ant Farm. It's interesting how that was more along the lines of parody and this is more along the lines of imitation to grab the ear of the listener at the start and pull you in to want to hear more. I personally feel Imitation takes more guts, being that you're "stepping into the ring with the champ". Ceating something in direct comparison to something so well known and loved automatically sets the bar so high, the artist had better bring an absolute banger or get instantly rejected as blasphemy.... and, at least for me, the weekend has gotten over that hump with this one. He brought something really well done and i can enjoy it without that twinge of resentment. Is it the greatest cover of all time? Absolutely not, but It doesn't suck, and I don't WANT to hate it,, and that says a lot to me. He didnt try to BE Michael Jackson, as much as he paid tribute and did it just right. Feels like one of those carnival games where you gotta roll the bowling ball to get over the hump to win, but if you push a little too hard it crashes and you lose ... he didn't crash. Cool stuff.
