  • Great song from their first album, Shooting Star. Last Chance got all the airplay, but this song is a fan favorite.

They got overlooked because they quit after the record company that was in charge of releasing their album went under & the promotion for it got reduced from around 300-40 radio stations promoting it...
Lead singer (Gary West) got disillusioned & called it quits & never returned to the business...& his singing really did carry the band.
They continued on eventually (& still do shows I do believe...but their other main singer passed away a few years back also...& their original violinist...Charles Waltz...was amazing also but had moved on before they reformed) but never had the level of quality from the original days unfortunately.

I show them on this tour when they opened for Triumph the night I graduated high school - May 18, 1980. Instead of partying I saw them and hadn't heard of them. Couple years later I bought their first two LPs and they're classics! I have III Wishes, Burning, and Silent Scream, but they sort of fizzled from how they started out. I just finished recording the debut and this song has always been my favorite from them.

Forgot about "Shooting Star", shame on me, a Kansas boy and all. Love it when I hear a song that has been dropping slight pieces of earworms for years and YEARS, and then finally some caring soul has uploaded this, more importantly I stumbled across it, and filled in those missing pieces, completing the jam, and finding more forgotten jams hopefully preventing those fragmented earworms! KY102, now let's see off the top of my head, Dick and Jay were AM, Katie McGucken? afternoon, and Skid Roadie to drive us, well, Mom and Dad were driving me home back in the 1980's. I swear I pulled those names off the top of my brain! Man 102 and Memorial Hall kick off a bunch of good memories, thanks for that, the last show I saw there was NIN, Marilyn Manson, and the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. Yep! That was one for the memory banks. NIN showcasing Marilyn M., and most people weren't used to an opening band coming out in a 10" black strap-on ensemble to perform... musically, and after the 'Side Show', I'm not sure most people were ready for that, but NIN killed it!

The only notable similarity to Kansas is that both bands had a violinist. Structurally, their music is very different. And lyrically, there aren't many similarities at all.
SS never agreed with the Kansas comparisons either. I know it bugged them because they said so (tactfully) on Rockline back in the day.

They lasted until ~ 1986. They did 5 great albums with most of the original lineup. The last two, Burning and Silent Scream, were particularly good. SS was a masterpiece, but their pathetic record company didn't promote it and it died. It could've easily sold 4 or 5 million copies (it was that good). Gary was so crushed he left the music business. Can't say I blame him.
Soon after, most of the other members left also. Since then, a revolving door of new members & a totally different sound.

Agreed, a fantastic band that never got their due. My thoughts were that they were very much like Kansas, & many people didn't bother with them because of it. (A good analogy might be when the band Starcastle came out, they sounded a lot like Yes, & could never escape the comparisons).

On 9th and 11 I got married and had shooting star play the reception for 2 hours other people that were there were some members from Head East and from a band called Banshee, Tommy Lee Flood. It was one of the greatest moments in my life having them play they're one of my favorite bands of all time if you haven't heard Banshee or Head East look them up I bet you've heard of them on the radio. But they too did not get the recognition that they deserve. Van of shooting star also had a band at that time called Van and the movers. When I looked into their body of work I'm really wrote down all the sounds I wanted them to play there were 30 or 40 songs that's how many hits they had or shoot have. Everyone in the songs are awesome just like last chance Breakout you got what I need Georgia's song the wrote about George Harrison of The Beatles Hollywood and many many others we listen to all those songs it'll take you back to the seventies and eighties and nineties just like it did me. I've got a copy of that concert somewhere they burned it right off. They burned it write off of the mixing board one hell of a night. One I'll never forget! Chris Tilton AKA Sunnyday
