June, 29 1980 Super Jam, St. Louis, MO, Busch Stadium - Shooting Star opened it up, then April Wine, Judas Priest, Journey, and Sammy Hagar. What an event that was, never forget it. Shooting Star was huge among us in the Midwest and we were just as excited to see them as we were all of the others. They had a unique sound, much like Kansas with the violin, the ability to transition between several styles, and great vocals. I still listen to their original album on a regular basis. Good stuff.
I grew up 1 house away from these guys...we use to play basketball in the driveway. I washed the kick ass cars and they would let me take them around the block. I was allowed to join in on the writings of some of these songs. Cool!
I was looking for Last Chance a couple months ago and tried out this song. I can't get enough of it. This may very well be the best song ever performed. My transcendence during this song is incredible.
I remember me and the guys in my band loved these guys, but no one had ever heard of them except us. The first time I heard Last Chance and started digging into their songs I was hooked. Got to see them open for Kansas back in about 82, and its likely the only show I've ever been to where both bands sounded just like or better than the albums.
I played "Hang On For Your Life" until it wouldn't play anymore... then I played the cassette until it wouldn't play anymore. Got the CD, and it's one of my prized possessions! Wish there were videos for that album!
i found the self titled record in a bargain bin when i was 13. i played it then i couldnt stop playing it. then they become one of my favorites over the years. got to see them open once for heart in 85. they blew hear away. gary did the typani solo for last chance right by my head;-)
saw these guys in k.c. i was a very young man..early 80's i would have been 20 or so... they also had a song called midnight man also a great jammin song...very underrated band...
@DickLodge68 Awesome....Those were great days! to grow up in... I saw Gamma many times at Day on the Green concerts alongside REO Speedwagon, Kansas, UFO, 38 Special, The Cars, Nugent, Aerosmith, Triumph, Blue Öyster Cult, Pat Travers, Loverboy, Ozzy Osbourne etc. So many on one bill. Ticket price was around $12 for all bands. I thought the music was gonna last forever...
Saw these guys at Rainbow Music Hall in Denver my senior yr in high school...great. And they still sound as good 25 years later. Too bad they were never appreciated much outside the US Heartland, like that other great band from nearby Topeka. But I guess that makes us who "get it" feel just a little more privileged! Yep...the 80's had some great memories.
I opened a show for these guys in the early 80's at Bill Graham's club, Wofgagng's, in SF. It's funny cuz these guys were real tired and their soundcheck wasn't very good. BUT--when they came back to play later that night they just freakin' rocked! Thanks for posting this.
I bought a car from Bill in 1976. His Burgandy Coronet 440, back when he lived in Overland Park. I just heard of his death a few months ago when I tried to find him again. Great band, RIP BILL
One Block West... 1977 "... she used to love me... ...I used to love her... ...gentle ways..." John Swetnam... You had me and my sister booted from the pub for bringin' in Wild Turkey... remember?
Excellent song !! nothing like Old 70's early 80's keyboard orientated ROCK~ This song has the -EXACT- same ending as STYX's 'Born for Adventure'.! check it..!!
come on van put breakout and she's got money or you know what put some of the live stuff from your joplin and pittsburgh shows on here!i bought the albums,i bought the cd's, i bought the concert tickets, and i even played several shooting star songs in various bands that i've been in over the last 28 years. i'd really love to see some live stuff from hang on for your life and three wishes, please!!!!
My little public service for a band I've loved since they first came out: They've now got their own website - "shootingstarmaniacs(you figure out the rest of the url)" - at which you can buy their old and new albums on CD, a live DVD, and even t-shirts.
"shit" is a more appropriate term! lol! Man I never imagined music would get so sanitized, awful and unfeeling. It's like people no longer have souls...We are supposed to be dumb enough to believe this is "progress". None of the bands back then had any of today's fire breathing super computer technology. Not a single software program to be found either. Yet they rocked the house and created epic songs regardless. Go figure! Thanks for watching and your comment : )
SS recorded its first album produced by the legendary Elton John producer Gus Dudgedon. Rumor has it that Elton fancied Charles..much to the horror of Charles!!!!
This was beautiful stuff wasn't it? No one really plays an instrument anymore. Music is horrible today, can you really call the crap they do today music?

KC rock and roll at its best...
Love the band. Have all the albums. Saw them at least 30 times back in the 80's. Why did Gary West always wear pajamas on stage? LOL

the rhythm sounds like van halen - where have all the good times gone.
Yes.
Morningstar was a different band that came out just before SS, but also from Kansas City.
as the music continues to become neutered, dumbed down and de-evolve... but we got fancier videos, slick technology & special FX

@dlchambers Actually, WHATGTG? is a remake of a Kinks song from 1966.
SS recorded its first album produced by the legendary Elton John producer Gus Dudgedon. Rumor has it that Elton fancied Charles..much to the horror of Charles!!!!
Yep . . .there's more to KC than 69th and Prospect,booze and BBQ. . .
Hell ya! One Block West!
hi : )
@dlchambers You're unclear- Van halen ripped off Shooting Star? or viceversa??
'cause Diver Down and ..'good times gone'..Came out AFTER this song.
@MDCSWildcats86 Yeah, I should have known that :)
What month of 79 did this song came out?
thanks -

No one really plays an instrument anymore. Music is horrible today, can you really call the crap they do today music?
storyboard
@dlchambers NOT AT ALL.!!!
Sounds like Van Halen ripped off the rhythm for "Where Have All The Good Times Gone?"
They dont make music like they used to..now it's all crap rap, what these kids listen to.
Great Album cover to cover. I got to go to a Shooting Star concert someday. It just may be the best Ive been to ever.
