Torso Electronics S-4 Sample Manipulation Workflow (Textural Soundscape)

  • Just a fun exploration of messing with some field recordings I recorded.
    Apologies for the high noise floor, I am unsure of where it's coming from, it might be due to needing to gain up a bit due to the S-4's low output. I will continue to work on the noise floor issue.
    No live input in this pieces. It is 4 samples being manipulated, one from my SOMA Terra, one of stereo contact mic in a bathtub being filled with water, a binaural field recording of frozen rain falling, and the last was recorded live through the onboard mic.

      Hey, Subradial!
      Thanks for watching, mate!
      I think you are gonna absolutely love this thing when you get yours in.
      I spent a few hours after recording this video digging deep into sound designing with the timestretch functions and modulators. I have some very cool stuff to record tomorrow in the same format.
      I still haven't touched half of the features in any meaningful capacity, but the fact that I can create all of this from a few short samples just tickles me.
      I have a few things I want to test out before I record, and see about resampling and some frippertronics action.
      This thing rewards you the deeper you dig imo, it took me a bit of time to warm up to it, but this will be a mainstay in my rig, as well as the Oddment Audio Groc.

      This thing requires some patience and an extreme desire to experiment and explore. It's absolutely something else.
      My next longform video will primarily be focusing on the tape machine and time stretching functions to create deep atmospheres using samples.
      I don't bother with chatting because the screen shows everything lmao I love it!

    wow. this is inspiring. the rain sample was very long or how did you achieve that? this is crazy inspiring to compose. I am thinking to do this and capturing whatever the output is in a daw to then grab the guitar to play and compose on top of this, based on what the inspiration calls
    and loving the spectral visual. how did you do that as well? Thanks

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  5 дней назад +1

      Hey there!
      I'm so sorry for the delay, I've been on tour around the PNW for the last few days and have a break before we finish it out this weekend.
      The rain sample was a binaural field recording I captured from my porch, and looped it. At the time I recorded this video, the max sample length was only 3 minutes, but rain is relatively easy to loop as it's basically just white noise being modulated haha.
      I did not have the S-4 very long, as it was incomplete and had no features to integrate it with other instruments or a synced rig. I'm not sure where the development is at now as I'm no longer following the project. It should work relatively well as an audio processor for live playing though, as there is an internal clock that you can work with.
      For my visualizer, I use an app called Spectrolite for iPad. I just route a copy of the master bus out into a 2 channel interface connected to my iPad. I really love having it set up that way, and I recommend spending the five bucks on the pro license.
      Thanks so much for watching!

    This was great, you pushed this sample to some unworldly places, the delay and reverb are something else too! Thanks for demonstrating. A question though: have you tried syncing this device to anything else yet? Can you sync a track on this with a drum machine and get some interesting rythms going?

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  2 месяца назад +1

      I am glad you dug it! This was all on board effects with the exception of I was dumb and for got to bypass my meris merc7, so it has some added space haha.
      The midi clock is not quite ready yet, so there's no transport or sync at this moment, but it's expected in June, and I can not wait to get this moving into Berlin school style tracks.
      I'm cool without the features quite yet, but it's gonna be way more powerful with a few upgrades.

    • @Metamerist625
      @Metamerist625 2 месяца назад +1

      @@AbyssalPantheon Thats very useful information thanks for the expanded reply. It will be interesting to see how those features pan out, I had a look at the manual and it seems to imply that you might get a midi channel per track, if thats true then that would open up a lot of options! I might yet get one when I have some spare cash.
      Regarding Berlin School, I think you could add some totally unique flavours to a Berlin school jam with the S-4.... that will be exciting to see.

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  2 месяца назад +1

      @Metamerist625 no problem!
      In regards to current midi functionality, it can receive midi notes and CC. I actually have used that feature to play the poly mode device on the S-4, and it is very fun.
      Once the S-4 has clock, transport, and aftertouch+velocity, this machine is gonna open up considerably for a lot of people.
      If you like making pieces that don't require tight timing and like to explore sound, it's a powerful creative tool if you're willing to sit with and start messing with knobs haha

    This is really inspiring! I’m waiting on my S4 and was wondering what recording app you are running (shown here on the iPad screen) and what connector you are using (the large white one shown here). Thanks in advance!

    • @AbyssalPantheon
      @AbyssalPantheon  2 месяца назад +2

      Hey, Point!
      Thanks for watching, and I am glad you enjoyed it :)
      I am actually recording in my daw, and I do most of my audio routing in there.
      The app is actually listening to the master bus sent out from my DAW and into a small 2x2 steinberg UR-22 audio interface which is connected to my iPad.
      The large white connector for at the iPad is the camera attachment that allows me to split power and data, so the smaller USB-C cable I plug in is power for the iPad, and the larger type A is the smaller audio interface.
      The app that shows the spectrum is called Spectrolite, and I highly recommend it. I use the pro edition because it adds way more visual functionality over the free edition.

    • @AbyssalPantheon

      Thanks, Lukec!
      The app I use is a spectrum analyzer called Spectrolite. I had to shrink the y axis a bit to fit into the shot for this video, but it's very detailed and you can assign independent colors to the left and right channels; which makes some really nice visuals with some panning audio.
