- Just as I thought it would be, TRASH. I’m sure people who only watched Avatar for the fight scenes might get some enjoyment (?? idk even this might be a reach) but I think that Netflix FAILED to capture the spirit of ATLA. Terrible script, bad acting, stiff dialogue, choppy pacing. As I expected, it makes total sense why the creators left oh my god.

WRITING. WRITING. WRITING. Why is it that so many shows have such a tough time with this? If not good writing, then at least make it sound natural!
I have no idea how it's possible to have something in production for FOUR YEARS, have the highest Netflix budget ever, and still end up with a script as mediocre as this one is.
The characters couldn't stop talking! We had to be told everything! The writing in the original trusted the audience was smart enough to understand what was happening without things having to be constantly explained to us!

I got 30 minutes in but stopped. Its just lacking the nuance of the animated series. Why is Aang just divulging his self doubts about being the Avatar in the very first episode? That was something that we had to wait until 'The Storm' to find out and even then, he was ashamed to admit it aloud to Katara. Why rush it? The dialogue was very heavy handed and is about as subtle as a tire iron to the head. Dont even get me started on the acting.
Huh? Go watch the cartoon if you want the exact same thing here. Here’s a question. How many episodes of the cartoon are there? How many episodes of the netflix show? Netflix took 20 season one episodes of the cartoon & condensed it down to 8 live action episodes. That means they had to condense things. It’s common sense.
Each episode of the Netflix show is equal to roughly 3 episodes of the animated show, give or take a couple of minutes. They DIDN'T have to condense ANYTHING, except for the fact that they ADDED a lot of their own/rearranged stuff, most of which is lesser than the original animation.

@@HadesFist actually everything does make sense if you watch the show. Kyoshi acts thst way because thats simply her personality. Avatar Roku confirmed that in episode 6. And Bumi is as a right to be mad because Aang was his friend and Avatar and when he needed him most he wasn't there.

Some people will swallow anything, look at all the folks who give kudos to Frozen II, which is a TERRIBLE lazy and confirmed rushed movie, not to mention boring, and destroying the very thing that made the franchise what it is, all because Elsa and Anna are in it.

Lastly with the acting…No these folks are getting paid THOUSANDS of DOLLARS for playing these roles it’s their JOB so I will critique heavy when the acting is this bad. I don’t wanna hear “growing into the role” maybe if they GREW into the skill in acting classes we wouldn’t have this conversation

I will FOREVER say this. Animation is just as good as live action. Avatar did not need to be live action; people don't respect animation so they always mess it up when it becomes live action; just watch the show in its original format.
This. ATLA needs no live adaptation.

Despite this false idea that live-action= more mature, something I've noticed after watching six episodes of the live-action is that there is very little subtlety! There's a lot of telling and only some showing! It has to explain most things to the audience and fill scenes that originally had little to no dialogue with lots of talking! The original trusted its audience to be smart enough to understand what was happening without constant explanations! It could infer or show things and trust the audience could get what was happening, even though the primary target audience was children. The live-action has a higher rating than the original, yet it keeps feeling the need to talk down to the audience in a way the original didn't!

I gave up when they did The Cave of Two Lovers and had Katara go in there with SOKKA 😒😒😒
Yeah that blew my top!!! Not even the fact that they met the singing nomads and had that whole song bit. The fact they rushed this part of the story that doesn’t even happen in Book 1. They go through the cave in season 2 and that’s only because the Fire Nation had seized control of Omashu. They are rushing certain plots and leaving a lot of space for holes. It’s messy.

Yesss! Original Katara was way more impulsive, which made her character development so good. Just think about the Katara Zuko arc.. that was so good in the original and I don't see how they would pull this off with this empty shell of a character.
Also, they toned down the humor so much... It's just terrible
Yeah, I was dreading this. Especially the presentation of Katara. She may have been the "team mom" of the group, but she was far more than that, and they even deconstructed the trope itself in the cartoon. It seems like they're going to play it straight here, and that's an insult to the character. No thanks.

@@shippendales8543 She's not even "team mum" in this season. They took away all the things that make her Katara. Where's her passion, her rage, her desperation to learn waterbending, her jealousy of aang, her compassion, her outspokenness etc. The live action version doesn't possess Katara's strengths or flaws. Even the ones they do choose to display, they do so in such a subdued manner which makes her just come across as passive and meek. I can't see this Katara intentionally getting herself arrested so she can free earthbenders from a prison barge, and that was a defining moment for season 1 Katara. The character they made for this live action show is just simply not Katara.
UPDATE: I finished it last night and what I took away from the series is to write your movie, short film or tv show because there are people out there that’ll heavy support garbage regardless
This show is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! I stopped on EP. 5 I will have to ask GOD for the STRENGTH to power through the rest because the moment I saw the owl I was DONE! Over it
The acting, pacing, directing, and writing is so damn bad it was laughable! The constant exposition and lack of KEY moments and story arcs omfg
Don’t get me wrong it was definitely things I liked the visuals, the bending, some changes in terms of sokka blaming aang for his dad not being there, kyoshi taking over aang on kyoshi island etc.
I’m shocked at the mostly positive reviews I am seeing this show is ass!
This show is not as bad as you think it is in my opinion. I respect your opinion and I'm not in any way trying to change it, I just disagree with it. While I do have nitpicks here and there I thought they did a pretty good job with the show.
I really dislike how it feels like it has to keep explaining everything all the time! The animated show didn't feel it had to keep doing this all the time! I'm going to re-watch the original to remind myself of what good storytelling is like!

@@anthonysandoval5512 I have mixed feelings on it. I wanted to give this show a fair chance. And it looks great, has great costumes, the actors fit their roles. The biggest issue is that it keeps trying to explain things and it talks down to its audience. It has to fill nearly every scene with dialogue, even scenes that have little to no dialogue. It talks down to its audience much more than the cartoon did. I just can't help but feel disappointed on some level.

I will say though I do kinda agree with you that there was a lot of exposition that we didn't need. I get we need to set up the world but we don't always need to do it with tons of exposition so I get where you're coming from. I hope you do understand what I'm trying to say.

I knew it wasnt gonna be great solely based on the Showrunners backhanded comments about the original series. You can tell he viewed animation as the lesser art form. He kept referring to it as a childs cartoon, minimizing character arcs while using content from future seasons to attempt to make the characters more 'fleshed out' like congrats you used plots and character dynamics that werent revealed in the first season and you think that makes your depiction more adult and raw. He implied the creators were just making up shit as they went along but hes relying on material that was created by other men. Its laughable.

Avatar I still view as a cartoon everybody should watch once, the life lessons you learn in that show and how mature they are when dealing with certain things is not something I have seen many replicate. I will never get tired of Iroh and Zuko's relationship and how that is portrayed and developed.
An example. What strikes me is that Sokka's view on women that they apparantly was very focused on in this live action show and wanted to remove (and as far as I know, they have), removes a core character development arc of that character. He is a vastly different character later then what he started out as. And that strikes me as something you would not remove if you actually saw and understood the original show. And that is not just Sokka, every character have something that is bad about them or that they struggle with that they work on as the show goes on.
And best of all, the show itself respects the audiences intelligence, which I feel many shows as of late, does not, in fact I would go as far as say they make the audience look stupid to a degree.
I cannot respect creators like those you mentioned that gives backhand comments like that. And because of that, I will never watch it, in fact I will re-watch the original instead.

Katara steering Appa after being acquainted for 2 business minutes was the last straw for me. The script and direction is terrible and I don't foresee the series getting better with everything they've fumbled in the first episode alone. It's visually nice and I think there are great actors in the show but the script, editing and direction destroys any performance on screen. It's such a shame.

I took the day off and watched the entire series. Almost all the actors are bad, adults included. It's completely rushed. The plot changes in massive ways. The characters are not faithful to the originals, especially Zuko. I was so excited to see the Agni Kai with Zuko and Zhao, but instead they made him RESPECTFUL to Zuko initially? And the worst part is the MENTION of episodes like the canyon crawlers. They could have at least shown snippets, just 3 second flashes to the gaang doing all the stuff background characters were talking about. Can't believe I let myself get excited for so long and waste my day off.
Dude!!! One of the best plot lines of season 1 is the feud between Zhao and Zuko! I could not stand their initial treatment of each other on Netflix. Setting up their antagonism against each other from the very beginning and keeping it throughout was so necessary. Ugh 😑 so disappointed
I finished watching the show. It might be nice looking show but it’s bad in my opinion. There’s so so so many defects in the story. They keep pushing the story without reason and logic. Lots of things don’t even make sense especially if you’re watching this show only for the first time.

Agree 100%. I’ve only seen the first episode as of right now, bout to watch the next but I wanted to look for a video like this cause I need to see someone else say what I was thinking. The writing is so bad. The dialogue is horrible and generic as hell. They try to make everything so intense and there’s no fun light heartedness to anything so far. I really hope the entire season isn’t as bad as this first episode
They packed 3 episode sTory arches in the omashu episode it threw me off. Last air bender is what my animation professor used to teach us about A B And C story’s 😅 and aang looks like a bald headed bretman rock 😂

@@shippendales8543but the problem is the combined stories together that were not even crossed in the real show. It’s one thing to add multiple arcs in one episode but to completely change the plot was crazy. It’s like they took random pages out of a chapter book and jumbled them together. Seriously they did jet episode, northern air temple , omashu, and cave of two lovers all in one setting. It was a headache to watch.

@@JayJayva04 for timing purposes I understand they couldn’t put everything in the live action as expected but what I could not understand is them completely changing the plot. Especially with the cave of two lovers, why in the world would they make Sokka and katara go through the cave. That episode is supposed to foreshadow Aang and katara’s future. Also cave of two lovers was supposed to be in season 2. The only reason they went through the cave is because omashu was overtaken by fire nation. And I also felt king bumi revealing his identity that he knew aang as a child made their fight awkwardly placed. Why would he tell Aang he was his friend then proceed to try to kill him lol. In the cartoon Aang was unaware it was his childhood best friend until after the fight. Also the freedom fighters team up with the invention maker scientist guy in book 3 during the day of black sun. So them trying to kill him in the omashu episode made zero sense. But again they will have to do a lot of rewriting.

Anyone saying this dumpster fire is good were not true fans on the animation. There’s this thing called “continuity” that this Netflix series lacks. Like most production studios in this era, they think they can wow the audience with these CGI effects but I’m not impressed. My favorite episode is Aang going to the Temple and meets Roku and has to fight his way out using his avatar State. For them to gloss over that and highlight Kiyoshi instead. BYYYEEEE

Like if Netflix & the showrunners for this adaptation had been upfront WAY earlier, maybe I’d be less critical. But they waited too long before saying that ol dumbass “it’s a remix not a cover” statement about the changes.

Surprised you say Sokkas acting was bland, when Katara and Aang have the exact same delivery every. single. line. To me the best actors of the season were Sokka's and Zuko's and the water tribe avatar. And this isn't to say that their writing wasn't shit, it was, but they actually added nuances to their performances with emotional depths. I don't blame the actors for this though, they're young, I blame the directors for letting them give every line the same boring ass wooden delivery that made me dissociate every time they opened their mouth

It's not about what they don't have, it's about the quality of what they do have. The acting and writing and visuals are all just not good at all.

MOST of the actors remind me of the cartoon like sokka, aang, Bumi, and zuko. Granite some did not start well but as the series continues they really grow into their character. You will always disappoint yourself thinking a movie adaption will 100% mimic the OG. I just appreciate that they tried to stay true to the cartoon as much as they could, but BOOK 1 is just not an easy chapter to adapt. It’s arguably the worst in the series.
The Appa situation was atrocious. What I like about one of the changes is that they showed how the air nation was taken down as the fire nation took advantage of the extra energy from the comet. I feel that is something that was done well and shows another time the power of the comet was used for conquest.

This is my first view of anything Avatar Adrian, & I am instantly hooked! Hearing the creators walked out & seeing the trailers told me all I needed to know. Strangely, other reactors seem terribly solicitous about this show. One even appeared to "shush" & drown out their own spouse when she cackled at the stupidity of the dialogue & delivery. Husband then went on to make a totally uncharacteristic, long, impassioned speech about how great the episode was (Which the wife questioned -- "What is this? Where is THIS coming from?" -- & was again talked over.) So, more balanced reactors (as opposed to the ClickHate channels), are handling this with kid gloves. Hearing Avatar Adrian was like clearing away the cobwebs. The adoration for the original show is clear & the criticisms are honest and on point. I'm sorry for Avatar Adrian's blood pressure, but the righteous indignation gave me life. 😂😂😂
That said, I would adore if Avatar Adrian would suffer for art just one more time & review episode 2. I need AA's take on all things Kyoshi.

I agree about the on location scenes. The air nomads temples could have been shot in Tibet, the fire nation in China, the water tribes, Antarctica, and the earth benders in the desserts/north east Africa. Also, they could shoot in New Zealand which has so many terrains!

Yes I will agree that not everything needs to be live action some of the episodes yes they have their doll moments that they don't have that same animated sparked wood yes when you do animated to live action that will be some things that are lost in translation , but I will say this there is I think one or two episodes that kind of touches on some story lines from the animated that I didn't appreciate like how zuku got his burned eye the live action kills more into it like you actually see what happens The animated does touch on it I don't know if they go fool into death like that you show the fighting scenes but I actually do appreciate the live action actually going one death in it and there's some more background to how he got his crew which I do appreciate that , and just like one piece yes you're not able to adapt almost the whole book in just a couple episodes so yes it does feel like a lot of the episodes fell smushed in and writing kind of felt a bit weird but again it's to each his own a lot of people will like the live action and there are some who will hate it but we still have the original one to enjoy

I enjoyed it! Cried a lot over the bond between Zuko and Iroh and the same with Aang and Gyatso. Do I think some of the scenes were rushed and was there a lot of plot armor? Yes. Will I watch season 2? Yes. Do I think Princess Yue’s wig was terrible? Yes.

theres a whole bunch of dialoge that feels off. You need to know the cartoon to appreciate the dialoge.... people watching it without the context of the animation would likely see it all as rushed.
azula and ozai in season 1 like bruh, we get it... you need to introduce some things to get the story moving.... but you could have done the entire season 1 with all the stops and stories along the way without rushing the main plot.
The only reason its good, is because the movie was so bad.... we've seen how bad it can be, and just accept that it isnt as bad as that.
Sokka (like i knew he would be) is now just comedic relief.... there is no learning how to be a warrior or how to respect women.... he just is those things already.
The first episode won't make you like it.... the other 7 makes it an entirely different show, its not bad.... but its not ATLA as we know it to be.

But you forget that there was a very good team behind them and A LOT of what made the OG show great came from the writers, like Aaron Ehasz, so don´t overhipe mike and bryan to be singlehandedly responsible for the cartoon being a very good show.
Guys those who just stopped after Ep 1. just don't stop watching, I know how they made Aang fly with his Air Bender in the first ep. but he doesn't even do that next eps anymore and just uses his kite or whatever how he uses his kite to fly.

The first few episodes drag a little bit, however the other half of the season is actually very good.
There are some questionable changes, and the pacing isn’t the best. But there are also ones I quite liked.
People crap on it because it is a remake of a masterpiece.
It’s lightyears ahead of the first remake, and I actually enjoyed it.
I believe it’s was worth watching. And funnily enough, I am quite exited for the next season. (If it will come, JK Netflix)

Caricatures of characters is exactly what it's giving and i wont be watching either. What confirmed it for me that it was bad was when i saw how ridiculous king bumi looked. Cosplay looking asses lol. And i so agree that they be having too much money to be just filming in a studio. It looks so cheap it's hard to take seriously. Apa not being frozen with Ang makes absolutely no sense. We've already suffered a poor attempt from shayamalan. Id think someone making a second attempt would at least try to do better lol. But it seems netflix just wants as much content cranked out as possible no matter the quality.

Thank you for this review. I have no Netflix (and very proud of it) so I found spoilers here and there; and will agree just not worth it. Admittedly, moments like Aang's avatar state in grief hit me, but moments like how the past was shown, how like the earth avatar Kyoshi (I think that's how it's spelled, sorry if it's wrong) it shown SO MUCH, and the certain fight sequences, it's feels like to much favoritism for the female fighting obviously. I have no complaints before, but if you are showing it off, show it as neutral not as show.

For me the show was watchable. But they combined so many important episodes into 1 which got my back up. I get it had to be condensed into 8. But they even took season 2 storylines and mixes it in. A lot of the mystery and nuance was erased by added more and more back story which wasn't needed. Also Kataras actress really wasn't good 🙈

Why does Katara need ANY scroll or master if she's already water bending like Jean Grey in X2? Why are firebenders rocket boosting when it takes away from Azula & Ozai's elite mastery of fire? Why depict Iroh as a protagonist in the 🤬 pilot??? The lack of understanding, confidence, respect, & the trifled premature ejaculation is clearlyyyy upsetting me and my homegirls.

Aang can “float”. He does it plenty times in the animation to sit up or get up but they make it obvious he’s using air to direct his movements. In the adaptation I feel they made him “too much” of a master with the whole floating 12 feet in the air.
Also I can get the firebenders using fire rockets because the comet is already here. They’re overpowered af as it is and it’s no surprise to me the average guy get skills that on a norm is reserved for the elite

The moon spirit being attacked & the eclipse made the impending* comet more ominous and terrifying. I'm just surprised they didn't spoil energy-bending already so I'll give them that lol

I agree all that clunky exposition in the first 25 minutes completely took me out of it definitely giving screenplay vibes. The acting is not good constantly seeing the actors wheels turning in their head trying to make emotion come out. They’re always standing around waiting for the next line, it’s textbook like freshman year screen writing 1 oh1 level mess ups. It’s very frustrating not to mention. I don’t like the casting either. I don’t like the character of Aang in this adaptation he’s not charming like boyish or gleeful at all he precocious in a way that’s annoying and he has this thing that could be just a speech impediment, but it makes a lot of the lines fumble plus, I am not happy that Katara is not a dark skin Asian woman like where is the dark skin Asian representation honestly the whole thing could’ve been more Asian no East Asian music it’s just too westernize for me but what did I expect from Netflix, no emphasis on him being a monk no emphasis on spirituality. It’s just nothing.

I finished the season and it gets better. It’s definitely rough at the start. Waterbending looks horrible and the kids acting is sub par. It’s definitely a 6/10

It's really tough for everyone to watch this because even though it's probably one of the better live action series' I've watched, the original was literally perfect in its pacing, storytelling, acting, and humor (and I'm not just saying that from a nostalgia POV look at the reviews on IMDB etc). And then we get this which feels like a bit of a downgrade.
