How many watching this are actually just old folks been out if school for 50 yrs?
Ha ha, yeah I've done like 2 calculus probs since 1982
Yes, just an oldie here. Took les than 10 seconds to solve this one
I've been out of school for 30 years.
Guilty. Graduated college in 1974.
I've been out for 54 years. Only took a glance for it to be obvious. Generally, converting division to multiplication is a good thing. Still a poorly recovering math-head. (Aced the math ACT test, second in the school in the MAA competition. Never got below an A on any math test from sixth grade on.)
When dividing, subtract the powers. 10 is also 10^1.
1-(-3)=4
10^4=10,000
I get why it’s 10 000 now.
@@heidicameron2015 no problemo
10^-3 = .001 therefore it becomes 10 / .001 which equals 10,000
At the title card (0.02), my answer is d) 10000.
10^0 would be 1, and each step of the negative exponent moves the decimal a space to the left, so 10^-3 is 0.001.
Then, when we divide isomg that result as the divisor, we take the dividend, 10 and move the decimal three steps to the right, giving us 10000.
no idea what ur smoking there, but enjoy
electronics likes 10-to different powers:
milli-ohm: m-ohm = 10^-3 ohm
kiloohms: K-ohm = 10^3 ohm
micro-farad: uF = 10^-6 Farad
uuF = 10^-12Farad
So then exponent of 10 get simplified:
K-ohm = E3 ohm
m-amp = E-3 A
this problem:
=10 ÷ 10^-3
=10×10^3
=10^4
=1E4
=10,000
real simple if the exponent is negative you "flip" the number. Since we are also dividing by that number it just becomes 10 times 10^3. which of course is 10,000.
Simple, succinct and powerful!
QUESTION:
I've been trying to remember an equation from first-year calculus class.
All I remember is that the derivative produced the set of all values of x, where,
* x < 0, y = 0;
* x > 0, y = 0; and
* x = 0, y = ±∞
What function will have as its derivative this set of values?
Excellent class as it always seems to knock me back when I see negative exponents, but now I know the rules...... practise rules too, so....
A useful reminder about negative exponent rules, although the explanation was a bit drawn-out
Thank You for your Videos
I do enjoy getting better at math. I really need much more practice though. I definitely subscribed to this channel.
I did it by thinking in terms of fractions (the second method, sort of).
10 to minus 3 = 1/10 cube.
10 divided by 1/10 cube = 10 X 10 cube/1.
Which is equal to 10000.
Thanks for the review of the rules of exponents. :)
--- < Also, 10 / 1/10 x10 x 10 = 10000 or 10 / .001 = 10000 but is there a way to write 10 to the minus 3 like you write 10 to the 3? -10 x -10 x -10 = -1000 written as 1 /1000. However, squared negative exponents in the denominator are also inverted. If it were 10 to the minus 2 or -10 x -10 = 100, why would it still be inverted into a fraction?
It would be very interesting to see how this pans out across a number line. It's amazing to me that a whole number 10 divided by a fraction,.001, is equal to a number greater than itself.
.... Ten divided by 5 = 2. Ten divvied by 10 = 1. I am surmising that 10 divided by .001 =- 10,000 pieces less than 1. or 10,000 pieces that are 1 one thousandth the size of the original number.
Also how is any number to the zero equal to 1 and not zero?
Forty years ago I could do this problem in my sleep, but I really struggled with it. So another wake up call as to how rusty I am.
Being a visual learner my problem with Algebra is that it needs to be put into practical terms to make sense rather than just moving numbers around. So when there is a math problem such as this one in what real life situation would this apply? Like how would it apply in a lumber mill or a farm?
Thank you
D. Division by a fraction is equivalent to multiplication by its reciprocal. Since 10^-3 is 1/1000 its reciprocal is 1000. 10 * 1000 = 10000.
It probably depends on where they got their mathematics education.
I think the question is racist! Didn't the Left claim math was racist? Guess they dropped that argument when somebody pointed out that math determined their paycheck.
Good explanation with fundamentals
❤❤❤
How would you apply this to an everyday pro lem?why is this useful? Why not just mutiply?
It's like doing push ups. You end up in the same place but your muscles are stronger. In this case, your brain gets the burn.
I'm with you. Put it into practical terms where it makes sense.
We know that 3/3 or 17/17 or 8/8 = 1 Also 10 to the 3rd power over 10 to the 3rd power = 1. It is less confusing for me to multiply the fraction in this problem by 10 to the 3rd power over 10 to the third power to get rid of negative powers. If I do this the denominator becomes 10 to the o power, which is 1 And the numerator becomes 10 to the first power multiplied by 10 to the 3rd power. I add the exponents for 10 to the 4th power (over 1) which is 10,000. If I haven't done exponents in a long time, I can reteach myself since I know that 10 to the third power means 10 x 10 x 10, and it is to be multipied by 10 (which is the same as 10 to the first power), giving me 4 tens multiplied together, or 10 to the 4th power.
Thanks Sir, I enjoy you're classes, but as I said, Botbot is cool with me too, so far very helpful, like an expensive "see & say with a calculator, in it's pocket protector", haven't found it has much knowledge about "phishing expeditions" yet though, thank God.
10^4
Point means multiplication, why are you adding the exponents in 2^2 2^3
Simplest way to solve this problem simply is as given: 10÷10 raise to power minus three= 10÷1/10 over 3= 10×10 to power three= 10*10*10"10=10000 is answer. Logics 10 to power mins 3 is equal to 1/10 to power three by invesing power becomes positive. As per arithmetic rules when ÷ is converted into (× )multiplication, the inverse of 1/10 to power 3 is applied which is 10 to power three
C) -.01
I wish I had you for a teacher 40 years ago.
Solved at a glance. 10 times 10 to the third (convert division to multiplication when practical) is 10 to the fourth... 10,000.
56 years for me! Just trying to stay sharp
10,000. 10 divided by 1/1000 is the equivalent of 10 times 1000. I need to learn if there’s a simpler way to do this by just looking at the exponents.
Solved in 15 seconds in my head.
Came back here to measure my progress and check if I remember the rule.
Check! I do.
10 divided by 10 to negative 3 = 10 to the fourth power (a to the m divided by a to the n = a to the m - n) The rest is a piece of cake (1 minus (- 3) = 1 + 3 = 4). So I am left with 10 to the 4th power = 10 000.
I "appear" to be an expert in exponents. But don't judge a book by its cover just yet. ;)
Is obviously equivalent to 10 X 10 ^ 3. I didn't watch the video but managing to stretch it out to 20 minutes is going some. I almost wanna see how you managed to do that
In all fairness, he did a good review of powers.
10 raised to the power -3 is 1/1000 10 divided by 1/1000 is the same as 10 * 1000 therefore the answer is 10,000

Thank you Sir, Semper Fi, I'm in the middle of my College experience, and intend on watching lots of you're videos, some review, but more for college, algebra, trig, and calculus, do you have all of those, please? However, I was just wondering if you know Poe? Poe is actually an AI website, by Antrophic, that is called an AI Assistant, I call it Botbot. It explained to me it is not a robot, you get the idea. I used it for Solar flare math, inverse square laws, and it even can write code in Python, and C++. If you're interested, you, and or you're students could use it for extra help if needed, as well. It even has a bit of a sense of humor too, if you joke with it, or play with it, it will respond "chuckles", you know, for the kids. May God bless?
10:1/10^3=10x10^3=10^4=10000
Forget the simplicity because you have the knowledge. Think back to what, 5th grade?, this is a hard problem until you understand the rules. And guess what, the rules you don’t really understand until college. They are just rules you are taught to apply,. Until you go get into the fundamentals and understand where the rules are derive from, you just follow the rules. Pedagogy is a whole other topic. I am not a teacher, but my respect goes out to them!
10 is divided by 10^-3
So the answer is going to be a 1 followed by 4 zeros

10/ 10 to the power of 3 = 10/ 1000 = 1/100 = .0 1 is the answer.
10^2 =100.10^3 ,=1000 10^4 =10.000
I just see that 10^3 is . 001 and there are a 1000 of those in a whole, so the answer must be 10,000
10000 10÷1/1000 invert add multiply gets 10000
The answer is (d)

I'm not that good now because I'm older and I stopped doing math problems. To stay up on math, you need to continue doing math. Once you stop doing math problems you lose a lot of your math education. I'm 67, years old. Albany or the government was giving a test to become a math teacher I was going to take the test, I can't remember why it didn't happen. You can't stop doing math.
Was easy
-1/10
A bit of a long winded way of doing things.
Again, stop with the multiple choice and talking so much. Get to solving the problem and the steps involved!
Wasted TWELVE minutes to get to explain Negative exponents😖🥱🤦
