I never imagined that a mechanical pencil could ever blow my mind. The auto retractable mechanism is so simple.... but this mechanism (like said in the video) prevents lead breaking from pressure and also solves the tidious work of clicking every 2 minutes to get the lead out. It's a shame that its not on Amazon but i do hope i can get a chance to buy this in the future.

    • @LazyStory
      @LazyStory Год назад

      That is one big jump.
I have several Caren d'Ache... both 0.7 and 2.0 ... The 0.7 are not a drafting pencil, just a regular pencil for writing... looks good in a set with the ballpoint pen. But I never use for drawing.
I also have the Orenz 0.2.. but it is too small for me, sometimes I use the 0.3 for drawing, but it is still very fine and makes faint lines on paper

I can nerd out over mechanical pencils for a whole day. All of my graphite portrait work was done by mechanical pencils back in the day. 18x24 portraits. I know that sounds painful with a mechanical pencil but nothing else could get me the extreme detail I wanted in those drawings. I'd love to get a few of these, and I didn't even realize that .2mm was a thing. I used .5 and .3 depending on detail needs. The only thing I don't like about this is the auto dispensing feature. No way could I take a chance of scratching up the media I work on.

I love my 800+! Originally I wanted the normal 800 but the squishy end makes it pretty drop resistant.. doesn't work that well as a stylus tho. The Pentel graphgear 1000 is another decent retractor but I hate how violent the retraction feels

@@jsedenI agree the Pental graphgear 1000 series does have a noticable click and vibration when retracting the tip. Plus the build quality isn't as professional nor unique as Rotring. Next metal mechanical pencils to look at is the Otho Prometha series and Kuretake pencils.

Best mechanical pencil ever was the Pentel Techniclick T3, and it cost like $3 to $6. It looked great, felt great, and was amazing for drawing or writing.
The side-clicker was buttery-smooth. Manual clicking is always better for things like drawing versus auto extending leads, and the side-click is much faster than a top click.

Indeed 30 dollars for a writing utensil is pricey and I completely understand those who would wince at the idea at paying the amount for something so seemingly trivial. However, a really good pen/pencil becomes a companion for years and it just sticks with you. I spent the same amount of money on a fountain pen and it is my go to for school and any sort of writing

I have a collection of nearly 100 different mechanical pencils of various sizes and price points. I have one of these in each size. It was pretty easy to put them among the prizes of my collection as they feel lovely in hand and are amazingly smooth for such a thin lead. In contrast, other pencils would be far scratchier, even on the heavy, archival papers I use daily. However, one thing to note with these pencils is that the gloss on the barrels may wear off with regular use, but this is not an issue to me as I feel it shows a pencil that was used well, rather than just sitting on the side of someone's desk. Perhaps the only pencils in my collection that come close to the unique feel of these pencils is the OHTO MS01, of which I have 2 of each size, and all of them are simply phenomenal to use, but the continuous lead feed of these pencils edges out the OHTO ones.

Good review. I use a mechanical pencil quite a lot. (I also use fountain pens, so 'ancient technologies'? guilty. My dream writing keyboard is a fountain pen that I can use on Tomoe River paper while it transfers everything I'm writing, spell checked, to my computer) Mechanical pencils: I use the Pentel Twist-Erase III 0.5 mm, it works well but a critical factor is it has a large and long eraser. Too often otherwise great mechanical pencils has tiny little erasers you can never find replacements for. I also use 4B lead. It's soft and very dark, but I do go through them very quickly. I would recommend that anyone switching to a mechanical pencil, start with a 2B lead. This is the first mechanical pencil to retire my Black Marado Warrior wood pencils to my shop. I did try the Pentel model one level below the one you reviewed, and 0.2 mm, the tiny erasers were the deal breaker. If you're not used to using a separate eraser it's a deal breaker.
Paper. I loathe that fat blue line paper. I want my marks to be what's most notable on the page. I make my own line pattern in Illustrator, make the lines as faint as possible when they printout on the laser printer. I know most people do not have the means to make their own paper lines, grids or dots. My first thought is maybe I should just make a bunch of them and post the PDFs to one of my (unread by anyone) blogs; but I'll bet someone has already done it.

For me, being a programmer, I took a fascination with keyboards instead of pencils. I think the reason is obvious. Although I don't share your fascination, I get it.

How strong is the damping mechanism of the section of the tip of the orenz nero? Is it true that it is very delicate? I read that it breaks easily.
How is the texture? Does it work to avoid problems with sweaty hands?

Carlos Arzate I have a 0.2 version, used it for a year since I bought it. The clicking sound when advancing the tip was quite loud to me, and actually need to push it a bit hard to dock the tip back. But overall, satisfying.
And yes, it breaks quite easily. So always be careful not to drop it. I got sweaty hands and it still works pretty nice to me. But due to the texture of the grip, which is made from nylon and metal powder, the paint layers comes off very easily. Exposing it’s dark gray color inside.
      Hope it helped you.

I don't like the fact that it's not all metal and part of it is made out of plastic. That alone pushes me off to consider buying it, especially at its price tag.
Besides, those auto-retractable sleeve + auto-extending lead mechanisms, not only may be prone to breake or suffer damage over time (remember: the more complicated a mechanism is, the more it's prone to break), but it might also sometimes "accidentally" (automatically) extends the lead more than what you really want or need. Plus it also is in fact a problem, like you said, for all those persons (like me) who write with an angle and not vertically.
Yes, those mechanisms still may theoretically be ideal for ultra thin leads (i.e. 0.2 or 0.3) to avoid lead breaks, but in my opinion they also are "prone" to malfunction and they are designed especifically for vertical writing. (Morover, I do really like the manual act of pushing the top knob and hearing the "click" for extending the lead on all metal and solid mechanical pencils, it's just part of the game.)
All in all, I decided not to consider the purchase of this model for the reasons mentioned above, even if they launch it in 0.5 or 0.7. It just doesn't convince me. At all.
