      Chypres in general are not my favourite category of perfumes, but I found one that is truly stunning. It is a oldie but a goodie, Paloma Picasso, Paloma Picasso. It feels a bit formal to me as though I should be covered in furs and dripping in diamonds if I wear it. I do not care, though. I wear it with sweat pants, t-shirts, and running shoes. 😄

    • @mrspress8057
      @mrspress8057 Год назад +1

      @@user-lz6dm5lk9y I had never smelled that until about a year ago, when a woman at work was wearing it. A bit vintage, but lovely. Mostly oak moss, patchouli and a bit of rose (on her at least). I don’t know how many sprays she wears, but it radiates and fills a room.

      @@mrspress8057 Yes, I was late to the party, too. I only discovered this fragrance for myself last year(?), but I read where a lot of perfume lovers mentioned it as a great oldie, and indeed it is. It is very nice for cold weather or at least chilly nighttime weather. I do not think I would wear it in Summer. Might wear it on cold Spring days, but I think it would be too much in the heat.

    I love your intro where you say - 'for notes or tastes you don't like, there is something out there (you used jasmine) you will enjoy...It will be your gateway into that taste or scent.' I think this is totally true! I used to be turned off by indolic jasmine and oud (not surprising as those notes are challenging period) ...But, I kept giving fragrances a chance. I think Serge Lutens Filles de Joie and La Religieuse changed my mind on jasmine and Oud Satin Mood, Oud Bouquet and and Penhaligon's Bewitching Yasmine made me fall in love with Oud! I love chypres! From the beginning. Not all of them, but right away - some of my favs were chypres - I love rose so...I think rose and chypre kind go hand in hand. I love your list! Modern chypres can be so cool. Its so good to see you! Thank you for this awesome video and your fun stories! - xoxo

    My favourite ever chypre is Mitsouko . It is hauntingly beautiful.
    Unfortunately, I found out a couple of years ago that it was the signature scent of someone I really really really don't like 😡 I was told this by their partner. I have never smelled it on them but. I saw a bottle in their house when visiting.
    I haven't worn it since but I will, again, now as this person is no longer in my orbit and even when they have been they have only ever smelled of malice, spite and vitriol.

    My goodness, I loved that story. I rarely ask someone what is the perfume they're wearing. I think I've done it about six times in my whole life, and three of them were to make sure I never bought it. LOL.
    Currently thinning out my 60 bottle collection to get some good stuff and thinking about selling Magie Noir, Lancome and Pavlova, Pavlova. Both chypre and I hardly wear them.
    My favorite is Femme by Rochas.

    When you mentioned the materials and concentration used by Puredistance to explain the price, I think it's important to keep in mind unless they specify an exact percentage in the formula, you simply cannot trust a brand that says they use X material (usually an expensive natural, when in fact there are some synthetics more expensive than many naturals). It could very well be 0.01% to make the claim. The other thing about concentration, if the juice in a bottle costs say 2 dollars to make at 20% and you have 35% instead, that's still only 3.5 dollars. Keep in mind also they can advertise say, 40% but if the formula is 20% DPG that means you're effectively getting 32%, just as an example, since DPG is a solvent, odorless and doesn't have to be declared. I think the brand produce some pleasant fragrances but generally speaking, even among niche, they are not using formulas that justify more than 200 GBP per 100 ml or so.

    Yesterday I smelled Cardinal one of the new zoologistperfumes and it is a very green chypre! He is very interesting . I have several zoologists in my collection! I really likeNightingale, Memoire and Shangri la of Hiram green! In my RUclips video top 2022 my favorite perfume is a chypre but with earthy and aquatic notes. It's Une Île Pluvieuse de Senyôko and in my opinion it's the most beautiful chypre I've felt on my skin! I had a huge crush on this masterpiece! Have a nice day! I also smell Harvest Mouse of zoologist ant it’s wonderful. Have a nice day

    I tend to like chypres, but I haven’t done a deep dive in to the category. I think I’ve only smelled two of the frags you have listed here, Nightingale and Memoir Woman, and I need to revisit them both. Sisley Eau du Soir was the first real vintage/classic style chypres I ever fell for and my taste has been expanding to appreciate more of them, like Givenchy Ysatis and Frederic Malle Synthetic Jungle (which is obviously a modern fragrance, but it smells like a fairly classic chypre). I love Balmain de Balmain, but I think it’s discontinued. I recently sampled and fell head over heels for Oriza L. Legrand Relique D'Amour. I didn’t like Chloe Nomade at first but I fell for that too. Oh, and Ormonde Jayne Ormonde Woman is one of my top three favorite fragrances ever.

    Oh oh, my favorite genre! Chypres! I guess you could say I grew up training my nose on them since I was a child. My Mom wore them and so did I. I'm a lot older than you are as well. I notice if I am sampling perfumes, the minute I come across a chypre I almost always sigh with joy and love it. I find them to be the most complex and tenacious fragrance group and if well blended it's almost hard to pick out notes. I have been trying to locate your Ruth Mastenbroek "Signature" perfume as I have heard you talk about it before and it's not available in the US I guess. Oh and yes, "up (or out) the wazoo is a legit saying here :o) oxJulia

    Nightingale is nice, but wow it’s loud, so much it almost gave me a headache…mind you this was from a tiny swipe from a dabber sample. In Plunge, is the lilac noticeable? I love Chypre Palatin, it’s sooo good. Difficult fragrance genre to pin down for sure. I’m not sure I have a full grasp on it yet. But I am not too keen on Nightingale by Zoologist (although it is my fave house and I own many many Zoo animals), it is only one of very few Zoo creations I don‘t like so much. Need to educate myself about chypres, and fougeres too. You‘d think with the size of my collection I should know this but my nose still needs some more training. Thanks for this. Yeah, the IFRA determined that oakmoss is only safe at like... a total of 1%, I think, of the entire composition? That's probably the event that changed the chypre world. I'm going to be honest and say I don't think I've sniffed a chypre - I have more experience with fourgere accords. That said, I don't think I really know *what* a chypre is? I mean, I know it's defined by citrus top notes, labdanum and a mossy base, but outside of that... eh.
    That said, I think I'd like chypres, if I tried the modern ones. I do like oakmoss and patchouli as notes, as well as labdanum and some citruses. Might challenge myself to specifically create a chypre for one of my collections - uh, one day. After I've taught myself trad perfumery, lol (using aroma chems and not just botanical extracts). Gimme ten years or so, my indie brand will exist. This a promise.
    PS: Thanks to you I now know how to properly pronounce chypre. I've been - mentally - either skipping over it or pronouncing it with a hard ch and the y like in my. Um. ^^;

    Unfortunately there is always something else. I have always loved chypres, it seems. Mitsouko is my favourite scent, ever. Watch out for those gateway scents! You’ll find yourself collecting.

    As I expected, the classic good old chypre masterpieces aren’t here. I’ve smelled most of the perfumes in this video and own a bunch of them and I can also say (as also said in the video) most of them are not true chypres.
