  • Jada Pinkett Smith breaks down in tears while discussing the death of former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst on ‘Red Table Talk.’ Jada, Willow and Gammy were joined by Cheslie’s mom, April Simpkins, who sat down at the table for her first interview after her daughter's death. Cheslie died by suicide after a longtime battle with depression on January 30.

Just because someone smiles does not mean their life is sheer perfection. Most times, those who are very bubbly are battling very heavy demons behind those smiles. This was very disheartening but I'm happy Jada shed some light on it. Mental health not being taken seriously in 2022 is appalling and there needs to be more attention placed on it.

This is so true. The very sad thing is that when someone has mental illness, so many around them has no idea. The ones that are bubbly, and who are always smiling, are always put on a high pedestal. They're always pressured to be alright or good in everyone’s eyes. I'm one of those types of people who smile with a bubbly personality but I also deal with my things too. It can be so much pressure from the surroundings but I'm learning that it's ok to not be ok. I'm not afraid to tell others that too. We must stay focused on scripture and prayer to help us overcome the difficulties of living in this world. We each have a purpose. ❤️

My mother is my rock. She is my best friend. We’re extremely close. We fight sometimes but she is the reason I live. The way Cheslie felt about her mom is the way I feel about mine and hearing her read that text was so heartbreaking especially having dealt with depression for years myself. April is such a strong woman and Cheslie was a bright, beautiful light in this world who is gone too soon. I’m so heartbroken after seeing this. Rest In Peace to this beautiful soul and may her mother continue to spread her light everywhere. She’s so strong.

I met Cheslie before she was famous. I was impressed with how kind she was. She seemed Ike an angel. I only met her once and never forgot that meeting. Because her name was one that I had never heard before, it just kept nagging at me and I remembered that I had met her in New Orleans (where I am from) she was still in high school when I met her and she gave me a card and told me about beauty pageants. She even talked about her mother..My grandmother suffered with mental illness. The stigma has to be removed, especially in the black community.

Sounds really stupid and simple, but for me personally, I just need someone to reassure that everything will be fine, that I will be happy one day and that I won’t feel like this forever. When you are depressed, you genuinely believe that you are never going to get out of this state and that’s where the suicidal thoughts start coming in cause you‘re like „I don’t want to do this anymore.“ That‘s why I always ask my mother to remind me that everything will be fine, that I will get out of this and that I‘ll be happy one day.
Other than that: Therapy is a must and medication helps a lot, too! I‘ve been on antidepressants for two years now and I don’t feel depressive anymore!
Personally, reading the Bible and praying also really helps me. You just start to get this reassurance that there is a God that will take care of you and make sure that everything will be alright and that you don’t have to fight this fight alone, that you can give your struggles to God and let Him deal with it. And He will help - sometimes it will take some time, but He will never let us down.
I hope that was helpful in some way! ❤️

There seems to have been a strange relationship with her and her mom. Reading between the lines one statement stuck out that Chelsea said in the txt “I’ve always lived for you” meaning her mom so it appears her mom may have put a lot of pressure on her to be a certain person and she was tired of living for her mom, she wanted out. Her mom didn’t shed one tear and the txt mentioned several times stressing to the mom that she was a good mom. It’s a strange txt because she had a father and siblings but only chose to speak to the mom which says a lot about their relationship, my guess, it was probably toxic. I would love to know the real truth, because the mom is not telling it.

These are the negative comments that they referred to during this Table Talk. Watch the entire interview. What she meant by, “I lived for you” is that her mother was the reason why she kept living, because she attempted suicide before and her mom dropped everything to focus on her daughter. They didn’t live in the same state, she was already an adult living on her own when she passed away. So she made the decision to end her life all by herself. My son committed suicide and I was very close to him but I didn’t see it coming as well. This mother is hurting viscerally on the inside. She doesn’t have to prove to anyone that she’s in pain with tears because if that’s the case she would be crying every day all day long. I guess you didn’t see the part where the public called her daughter “ugly” and “old” after she won Ms. USA? This beautiful girl was already insecure, so being shamed by judgmental strangers did not help. She texted her mother because she KNEW that her mother would be devastated but she wanted to reassure her mom that it was her decision to end her life and not her fault. Stop with the hateful comments and blaming the mom. As another mother of a young child who committed suicide, he was 21, we don’t need your help to feel guilty about what happened because for the rest of our lives we will question if there was something we could have done to prevent our children from ending their lives. The pain that was once theirs is now ours and you have no idea how difficult it is to just wake up and keep on living without our children. My son was my only child, so at least she has her other kids to live for and they need her now more than ever and I know that’s difficult because she is grieving for her daughter. I think about ending my life every single day because I don’t have other children to live for and I don’t know what will be that last straw that will make me follow through and join my baby. So be kind with your comments. She or her other kids may read that you blame their mother for this beautiful girl’s death and I can guarantee you that one of them is thinking about joining her in death and your comment might be the one thing that pushes them to do it. Please be kind. 🙏🏻

@@justjones3 -- thank you for sharing your thoughts on Cheslie's mom. I'm so sorry that you went through and are dealing with the same experience. I used to watch Cheslie on Extra TV and I was in awe of her; her personality seemed infectious; she was so good at her job. After her passing, I realized that you never know what a person is going through. I don't have children; I made a passive decision not to have any after going through some traumatic experiences and seeing the cruelty and unkindness that exists in the world, which left me deeply depressed, anxious, and with PTSD in my 20s, but I can't imagine losing a child this way and having to live with the question of what could have been done to save him/her...and you are right, it's actually a transfer of pain from the person who died to the remaining family members. The Kryst family will have a long road to healing from such a loss, missing their daughter, sister, aunt every day; I get it, and my heart goes out to them and anyone who has to live with such a loss. I hope you can find a support group of parents who have gone through a similar experience. Sending you love, light, and encouragement.

@@mrs.fredrick_ her biological father never said anything. Her mom did not pressure her. Suicide seems senseless so people think that it’s someone else’s fault. Depression is a mental illness that is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It causes you to think irrationally and in some cases makes you feel worthless and you start to despair which causes inner turmoil and never ending pain. You start to believe that only death can end this pain. I saw the same clickbait story on You Tube about her dad but it was a voice over and not her dad speaking. People want someone to blame so they are blaming the mom when she is already suffering from this tragic loss. The daughter loved her mom dearly but depression does not discriminate. It doesn’t care if you’re beautiful, rich, famous, popular or successful. It’s a disease that takes over your very psyche which sometimes make you do things that you really don’t want to do like end your life. This has nothing to do with her mom, her dad or her family. The similarities around my son’s suicide is really uncanny because he also jumped to his death leaving an entire family behind to figure out the “what ifs…?” The rational part of my mind says that it’s not my fault, but then my own depression sets in and tells me that it’s my fault for not seeing the signs. I’m his mom how could I not see this coming? I know her mom is asking herself the same question. That family is hurting so who are we to judge and blame?
