The Difference Between Written Rap and Freestyling
Alright we’re going to keep this direct and to the point, so the first thing you must understand is the MAIN difference between written rap and freestyling is simply:
You have MORE time to think.
When you’re writing a rap you can pause and consider if that’s the most clever bar…
If your voice brings the fans in, and most importantly, ’cause this is RAP and not other forms of music…
WHAT THE BEST RHYME IS.
So, naturally if you want to get better at freestyle rapping in 2023… We need to:
Give You More Time To Think
Help You Have More Words To Rhyme
With this in mind, your #1 goal needs to be HAVING MORE RHYMES IN YOUR MIND so that you have to think less -
Since you already have all the words “programmed” in your brain…
And you can think of more clever rhymes…
SINCE YOU HAVE MORE RHYMES AT YOUR DISPOSAL.
How To Get More Rhymes In Your Freestyles
So now you know that you need more rhymes at your disposal, but naturally the question becomes “how do I ‘get’ more rhymes to freestyle with if I’m doing it spontaneously?”
Well, here’s the answer and this is the entire trick in one fell swoop:
USE RHYME CHAINS
A “rhyme chain” or even more commonly a “rhyme scheme” is a series of rhymes based on an initial word that can go as long as you can possibly think of.
As an example, if I give you the name of the city “Boston”, the rhyme chain of that word would go something like this:
BOSTON
Costin’
Bossin’
Awesome
Coffin
Tossed In
And so on.
This doesn’t have to just be individual words, either, it can be a whole phrase like:
HOW TO RAP
‘Bout to scrap
Shower stacks
Shouting Facts
Etc.
Got it?
MEMORIZE RHYME CHAINS IN 5 RHYME “CHUNKS”
Okay, now that you understand the concept of rhyme chains, your next job is start memorizing them so that you can have them at your disposal every single time you spit a freestyle.
I would personally suggest by just focusing on memorizing them in chunks of 5 rhymes.
So, after this article, maybe you will just make your goal to memorize that Boston rhymes with, awesome, coffin, flossin’ and bossing, and that’s 5.
Then tomorrow you can memorize that you can ALSO rhyme:
Tossed In
Starting
Cartman
Harden
Warden
And so on.

More interesting question is, i guess: how not to run out of rhythmic patterns. Cuz rhymes can be different, but many rappers have the same rhythmic patterns. Even one rapper often use same pattern on different songs.

😂😂😂I literally just learned how to rap with this method bruh I feel so dumb for not realizing it's just about rhyme a single word and it'll end up being a full sentence. Makes perfect sense bc it all has to rhyme anyways you just go for as long as you can. Everything you said before you run out of ideas would've been a good bit of freestyle. Best method ever I'm shocked not too many people know about this lol
