I've seen a lot of people simply rotate front to back as that is the simplest way to do it. I had the idea the other day of getting a spare tire and using it in the exact way that you showed here. Looks like you beat me to it! Great video!
Hope you and your family are all doing well mate, miss all your innovative RC builds, hope to see more of it in the near future, Take care from down-under (New Zealand)
Hey Ed! im not sure what you are up to these days i want to say thanks for all the engineering approaches in your videos, makes me understand concepts at a deep level
Ted, you were instrumental to me in my hobby plane learning. I am glad you have found a new passion. I hop from hobby to hobby learning new skills. Unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere and can't get service on a tesla, I have already looked into it. I will stay subscribed nonetheless.
I sure do miss your RC posts. Was a big follower and looking forward to building a second RC glider using your building techniques. Wish you would return to your RC roots improving on your building techniques and new series builds and even product reviews. Much more followers that Tesla fans. Just sayin!!
Great video and very helpful! Just got a new MY with 19" Gemini wheels. Spare tire prices have gone up..... even at junk yards but I found one on eBay from a Hyundai Genesis that meets the proper measurement specs. For approx $325 I got the donut spare, floor jack, 21mm socket, 1/2" adapter for my cordless drill and torque wrench. I also bought some hockey pucks and screw-in door stoppers to make my own jack pucks. So much cheaper and simpler to rotate the tires than the expensive jacks.
Good to see you again, Ed! I enjoyed the classes you taught years ago at FliteFest. I have a fleet of 4 vehicles and rotate tires Front-Back. I bought 2 small 1.5 ton Harbor Freight floor jacks so I can safely jack the whole side of the car at once. I had cut some round pucks with a slot from a 2x4. I always griped that they don't supply or at least sell something like that with the jack. That jack point system for Tesla looks smart. So after watching your video, I looked and found that they do sell round slotted pads on Amazon for that use. I just ordered some. Thanks for the tip. HF should sell them.
Great video Ted. I have never done this ever in over 40 years of driving. Probably had too many flat tyres replaced to ever justify trying to even out the wear. I have also had tyres that have a specific direction of rotation so I can't see how you could swap a rear left with a front right as that will change the direction of rotation. Obviously that was one of your stated purposes of doing the swap but that would not be right for that type of tyre. I have no doubt somebody will comment "that is just a marketing ploy by the tyre manufacturers" and I am certainly no expert. Not sure if you mentioned it during the video but obviously you need to adjust the tyre pressure too, certainly all my cars have had different pressures front to back. Sorry if you did say it, I may have missed but I did watch twice to check.
FYI..... Radial tires do NOT like to have the direction of rotation reversed. They take a "set" (a twist) in the cords in the first couple thousand miles and this should not be changed over the life of the tire. MOST tires are over-built, so, it won't be a concern, BUT, as you near the tire's limits>>> KABOOM..... usually on the front. One Old Man to another...:)
Where I'm from we need to switch to winter tires for a few months every year, so the rotating the tires comes at no extra cost. With front engine, front wheel drive cars, there is a real significant difference in the wear on the tires front to back, front getting the brunt of the wear obviously. It's simple enough to measure the thread depth, and stick the shallowest on the back, when you are at it. Never even occurred to me that one might have to rotate the tires like this in a non snowy area.
Good point about the pressure. It's one of many aspects of tire care that I had to choose to leave out in order to focus on the rotation. In this car, all tires are 45 PSI, and there is a digital (vs. "low pressure dummy light") TPMS, so it's mostly an no brainer. These factory Michelins are not directional, and are all interchangeable. The electric drivetrain has massive torque, and I a lead foot, so the drive tire wear is definitely an issue. Conversely, decelerating with regenerative braking is very gentle and constant, as opposed to regular braking, therefore the counter-rotative compensating wear is not available. You'd probably get by never rotating tires. You'd be pretty good just rotating front to back. But I like to do things the best possible way, and for guys who share that approach, and have an EV with a big, expensive battery underneath, here is one way to do it.
Good video. If you're rotating tires in the "x" pattern, make sure the aero covers stay on the correct side. At the end of the video, it's clear that your aero covers aren't on the correct side for range efficiency.
You should really go around the "star" twice any time you're tightening a "flange" as the first one you tightened will be looser than it was previously after reaching the end of the "star". I really wish other cars used that jacking adapter system. Both of our cars are a bit mangled on the underside from many years of being lifted for service.
Please "somebody"send him a brushless whoop and a a4 peice of foamboard so he can create something small enough to fly inbetween all those lovely trees star wars jedi master style :) QUICK TIME!!!
@@freiherrvonbraun6942 He removed it not long after he put it up. It was bizarre. It was some time ago. It was either on his leg or lower torso. Im gonna guess youtube forced him to remove it. It was great content.
Hey everyone....Just got a tesla model 3....this car is awesome. Just have 1 question for you today....What vehicle did that spare some out of? I'm having difficulty trying to fine a spare that looks like that.
The other channel was better. I did not get off the channel, waiting for a combination of both channels. It seems that you were only talking about the happy tesla cars. Goodbye and thanks for what you taught ...
I was coming here to ask the same question. The junkyards around here don’t let you roam the property, and as I ask around a bunch there is some uncertainty that any 5x114.3 donut will work due to a) the bolt on the brake assembly and b) the Tesla 14mm lug studs. If anyone knows what car is equipped with a donut suitable for this exercise, please advise. Thanks!!
im certainly interested in an electric car but here in the usa they dont exist! they have "JOKES" but not what appears to be a real car. HAVE NOT SEEN MANY VIDEOS! are you alive. what country do you live in? unlike most people you dont beg me for money! im to an extent surprised at this. what do you know about EDF motors?

If I understand this correctly... You are a Doctor.... You design and build aircraft. and you are making a video on "How to change a tire"..???? Wealthy enough to buy a tesla.... need help to change a tire. (I'll bet you pay someone else to mow your grass)
Well let me set the record straight. I am not a doctor, I am a medical coding consultant. I am not wealthy but I do OK, and owning an EV is a priority in my life, so I make it work. I have not a blade of grass to care for but I do all of my own yard work, which is plenty, in the woods that cover my property. I am a consummate DIY'er and like to share what I learn in life, whether RC airplane building or car maintenance. Knowledge shared gains overall value. Is there any problem with that?
Dang, must be having a bad day. Not everything is about money, and even if it is, you can choose to save and spend your money however you like. Ed, thank you for your videos, I've found your foam board Armin for quick testing of a vertical axis wind turbine.

really miss all your rc videos... they were so great.
Best video I've found, thanks!
Hi Ed.I was always taught that cross ply tyres(hardly found now) were swapped diagonally but radials were swapped just front to back.
Does it blow your mind (as it does mine) that the RC hobby is so closely related to how the Tesla works? Dream car for me right here...
well people need to evolve..i really do miss the rc days.. but still ill appreciate his efforts to get back to RUclips..:D
good to see u back, loved ur old rc plane build, cheers mate

That makes some intuitive sense, but why does Michelin and every other tire manufacturer recommend cross-rotating as I demonstrated?

Does Michelin tire has specific rolling direction? If you swap your right front to your left rear, your tire will opposite factory direction.
