On my business trip back home, I saw the nanny sitting on my dad's bed watching TV. My dad introduced her with her new identity:
"We’ve already gotten our marriage license, and from now on, Grace is your mom."
I was still stunned by the shocking scene before me when my phone rang. It was my daughter calling.
I answered, and on the other end came even more explosive news:
"Dad, I just got married to my boyfriend. I won’t be coming home for the New Year this year."
I thought I must have heard wrong:
"What? You married that blond guy? How did you get a marriage license without a household registration book?"
Grace got up with a smile and answered:
"You can get a marriage license without a household registration book now; marriage is free."
My daughter had already hung up the phone in a hurry, leaving me bewildered.
"Call someone!" my dad urged.
Grace, playing the role of the good-natured person, tried to smooth things over:
"It’s no big deal if you don’t change how you address us; you’re just nitpicking at this age."
"What do you mean you can get a marriage license without a household registration book? Are you talking nonsense?" I snapped back to reality.
glad she and her family got out early and safely
