One of the most disturbing and iconic songs of all time. And yes she's talking about the lynchings in the deep south of the US. Great Reaction.

Billy got into some legal troubles by singing this song, this song was banned from many places she performed at.A very disturbing and very telling song. She was a very bold woman and I love her story and learning about her.RIP sweet girl

Her singing this song during that era was an act of courage the likes of which most people will ever be capable. She knew that as soon as she opened her mouth, she would become a target and her life in danger, but chose to speak out anyway. If more people looked to people like Ms Holiday as heroes instead of who can run fast with a ball, etc we would have a much better society

This originated as a poem as a protest against lynchings. Turning it into a song hits so hard.

Glad you did this one. Haunting song. Brutally descriptive. One of my favorites from that era.

I learned it from a band called Zeal and Ardor then did my own research. Strange fruit is in reference to the hanging and Lynching of African Americans. Crazy stuff. Gotta remember history.

There is video of one of her last performances where she sang this song. The style and intensity contrast is startling and worth seeing

You should read up on her. Her story is both amazing and tragic.

This song is sad💔💔💔💔 I think about my ancestors that went through this. They indured so much pain and hurt. We are still treated bad. We not swinging from the trees we are killed on cameras by people that’s supposed to protect and serve us.

Glad to see that some people know the history of this song. Creepy as hell though, if you really concentrate on the lyrics too long.

I find it difficult to give a thumbs-up or down. The subject is too serious for such a simple reaction. The lament in her voice & the overall tone are emotionally gravid & can reach through the years to touch our hearts, today, too.

The song hurts every time i hear it. But in such a beautiful way. Suffering through that time , with her fame, and need for money...cause of arrests. The guilt she carried abd the pain she lived through.
    Makes me cry

Billie was my father’s favorite singer. He would get his 1940’s record player down from the closet and play her songs all night. ❤
