My 94 Astro 4.3L has the EGR in front behind the airbox which you have to take off along with all of the plastic tubing just to see it. It's a pretty tight fit but I just finished cleaning it thanks to this great video and the stalling and check engine light issues are now fixed. This really saved me a lot of time and money!
So nice of you to comment back. Yeah dude I` been trying to use my fingers for about the last hour. I even took the cruise control out of the way and the pvc vacum. I can put the bolts in no problem. So its not stripped out. But when I try to put the gasket and EGR back on no way! Never seen such a easy job go so wrong. I been turning wrenches for 32 years. First EGR valve though. Well I am in the middle of replacing the alternator on my 95 Safari. It looks like I will need to remove the 'dog house' engine cover so I can gain access to the infamous 'third' bolt that holds the back of the alternator to some kind of bracket. Thanks for your videos. They're clear and helpful.
If one of these electronic GM egr valves is acting up, you're much better off just replacing it. It might get stuck open at the worst time and leave you stranded. Mine went bad,it didn't even cause the check engine light to come on. I took it to 3 different shops. Every one of them told me that if it was bad,it would've thrown a code. That truck ran so poorly that I parked it for about 3 months. One night I was reading an S-10/ Blazer forum. Somebody else was having this same problem, they replaced the EGR Valve and it fixed it. I decided to buy a new one and hopefully it fixes the problem. And it did, evidently they can go bad and not cause the check engine to come on.
I'm just putting this out there. The egr on a 97 astro 4.3 vortec is actually just to the right of the alternator on the front of the motor, towards the top. Just looks like a grey disc with wires coming out of it.

Nice FXR! Thanks for the video! I am hoping this is my problem. It starts fine but after the motor is hot at operating temp it starts running rough and will not restart until the engine cools off.
It could be the ignition coil. Sometimes on ignition coil will get cracks in the wiring, and when it’s cold, it makes electrical contact, but when it’s hot, it expands to the point where it can’t make a spark anymore.

Hi again. I've got the haynes repair manual for the astro/safari today, and in that it says about cleaning the EGR valve: "CAUTION: Never wash the valve in solvents or degreaser - both agents will permanently damage the diaphragm." (chapter 6-20) I personally would have changed the valve anyway, but maybe someone else would get kinda upset about it if they kill their EGR valve because of your advise, so just a head's-up about that. Also, the engine stalled really sudden after i did this, so i don't know if the WD-40 had come into the electrics in the valve maybe, and that might be another risk about this method? Anyway, i just wanted to let you know about this since your video did help me find the problem in the first place.
Instead of lubricating the valve I would suggest using intake cleaner first to remove the carbon deposits that cause the valve to stay open then use some lubricant.

Hello, very informative video. My '89 Safari (4.3l TBI) has been idling high (no tach but feels like about 1000 rpm), and is suffering from poor throttle response and fuel economy (12 mpg mixed driving). The SES light comes on occasionally, usually after a few miles at highway speeds. Sometimes it turns off after a few miles, other times it stays on until I turn the key off and re-start the van. I originally suspected the EGR valve, but after viewing your video I am not so sure that is the problem. The van seems to run fine aside from the idle and throttle response issues mentioned above. Good power, idle is smooth but high. There is some hesitation in power delivery at low speeds, particularly after the 1-2 shift at part throttle. Seems to "bog" a bit after the shift. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions based on your experience?
M Kefer It could be a leaky TBI fuel injection system. The gasket kit is fairly cheap and easy to install. Here is a video I made about it: ruclips.net/video/NsRwS9e600Y/видео.html
Hi I did remove the engine cover but I did not see what you show in your video in fact i could not locate the EGR in my van it is GMC 1995 safari 3 doors 4.3 v eng.
***** thanks for your respond but how to get it out and how to find it , someone said you have to remove the passenger tire to get to it and other said it could be the ECU make the ruff engine sound and running
Ibrahim Atiyeh I haven't seen a 1995 engine, but I would guess that it is on the intake manifold somewhere. You should be able to find it if you follow the hoses. Do a search for the part on Autozone to see what it looks like, and then look on your engine for something similar.
Ever tried your fave Carb' Cleaner which is a more aggressive cleaner ?! Then use the WD-40 for extended lubrication !? Thanks for this vid' now I know where 'they hide' them on a GM van 🙂 (when visiting my fave auto recycler up here in western Canada) Will stick with the '96-98 pickups . lol
Once a egr is doing its job how often does open & closes? at the throttle body? I tested mine by removing it from the throttle body leaving the connector on the i turn the key on. I noticed the pintho came on.& when i turn it off it went down. Is that how has to work? I cleaned up & still have the problem.
@hoohoohoblin i done it to my car , and it works just as fine before i mounted that piece of metall , but if u remove the cable from the egr coile , than u`r "check engine" light , lights up ..best thing for my car , it has stoped shaking and the ruff idle is gone
Just went out there got it on with no problems and new fingers and determination. But It still runs like crap. Got to goose it to get it started. And its back firing when It doesn`t want to start. Once the pedals going It gets RPMS. won`t idle and just running near death! And another thing the engine temp never gets near 200 and heater not very hot! Can`t see the thermostat having anything to do with start up trouble. Junk yards calling it but only had plates on it six months.

+scorpio cabrera It could. If it gets stuck open, the engine will stall when idling. It will stay running when it is revved up, but when you let off the gas it will stall.
How can I clean & fix a stuck egr on a 3.3L chrysler town & country? I tuned it up & it ran good for a few months, but now has started idling rough & mpg has dropped an average of 5 mpg.
Mine is stuck closed.I'll have to remove it to clean it. I'll use carb cleaner and maybe oven cleaner.Water will clean out carbon, but mostly in the combustion chambers. a small amount of water will turn to steam and blast out the carbon. It has to be regulated.
Yeah I have to do this every year. I soak mine in gas. Just the bottom part. If you us Arco gas plan on always having a ruff idle and it clogs it way faster
Hey I'm Doug and I have a 1995 Astro Van. I've replaced Spark Plug Wires and the Ignition Coil and Distributor Cap and Rotor Cap. My problem is it cranks and runs but back up and put it in drive I can go 5mph but as im beginning to give gas pedal a push and get up to 25 it acts like it running out of Gas and dies on me and either im lucky enough that it cranks again or it wont and ill wait one to two days it crank and start. can you please help with a thought. I've been watching your videos and I haven't tried the ERG valve but i am going to try hoping it may help but in hopw that that something can help mysituation. I have wife and one Son 2 years old.
That could be a stuck EGR valve. When mine was stuck, the engine had a hard time idling and it would stall, unless I could keep it revving really high. Otherwise I would suspect a bad ignition coil or plug wires, but you already replaced those. Make sure the plug wires are securely connected. Doing the EGR valve won't cost you anything. The gasket should be reusable, but I recommend getting a gasket with a mesh screen in it like this one: @cBUds9Nypmc
Yo watched both videos on the ERG and the distributor. My rotor was a b!tch to get off. Anyway, I put everything back together and the gas pedal won't depress. I must be missing something really basic...any idea? 1987 Chevy allegro class b v6 4.3L
MrJohnnyutah001 Follow the linkage from where the pedal linkage goes through the firewall to the engine. I bet something is stuck in the linkage causing problems. Do you have any missing wrenches or nuts and bolts. Something must be stuck somewhere in the linkage between the gas pedal and the engine. Once I rebuilt the carbs on my motorcycle and lost a bolt. I replaced it with a new one, and when I took it for a test ride, the throttle stuck wide open because the bolt was jammed in the throttle linkage. Thank God for kill switches. I bet it's something like that.
That must have been comical... Yup your right somehow I kinked the throttle linkage. Easy fix. My first thought was there was some kind of pedal blockage safety thingy put in by the manufacturer if its not put back together properly. Any other problems with this engine I should keep an eye out for?
@@hoohoohoblin hey that's cool, a couple of years is better than a couple of days or a couple of months but I think I'd be willing to try to do that. My 1992 GMC Safari whenever I started up I have to hold the gas for a few minutes just so that way it will idle and I'm wondering if this is the culprit I have replaced everything except for this and the idle control thing of a jigger that's on the side of the throttle body. Any advice? Do you think maybe this might fix it if I try your method? Or maybe the idle control sensor thingamajigger? I'm all ears 🤗
If your EGR valve is in the front of the engine, you'll find the lower bolt is hard to get to. I use blue stickum on the socket when snaking it back into place. The gasket I hold in place on the valve with some small dabs from a hot glue gun on the SIDES of the gasket. Don't get any glue on the front of the gasket. Another service nightmare from the engineers at GM.
I cleaned mine with an oven cleaner spray it cost me $0.99 cents at the 99 cents store I sprayed it let seat for 15 mints. brushed with a used tooth brush do this 2 times and came out super clean.
Not sure what year they moved it, but I have heard that it is in a different place on newer engines. It looks similar, so you should be able to spot it.
You're not cleaning it in the vid. Just breaking loose the carbon. To really CLEAN it, you need to remove the carbon with a solvent. In that case, you'd be wise to clean the egr tube and the port on the exhaust as well, or you're just leaving a large amount of carbon in the system.
+Ibrahim Gaad that could be from the EGR valve. Or it could be something more serious. Cleaning out the valve doesn't cost any money, and it is pretty easy to do, so I would try that first.
decarbonising the engine with water do this much better and it remove carbon deposits allover the recirculation path and you can forget about EGR forever.
+diioriog Thanks. I'll have to try that next time. How much water do you use, and are there any risks involved? I'd hate to sieze up the engine or get water in the oil.

Ibrahim Atiyeh I haven't seen a 1995 engine, but I would guess that it is on the intake manifold somewhere. You should be able to find it if you follow the hoses. Do a search for the part on Autozone to see what it looks like, and then look on your engine for something similar.
@HappySquierGuy NO, the M&M's are NOT parts. The M&M's are the Breakfast of Champions!
Junk yards calling it but only had plates on it six months.
it fixed it!!!!!
i drive a 92 gmc safari
Brady Hubble same issue. Right now BRO!
I have a 1997 Safari (truck)van and my EGR is up at the front.Took me a bit to find it.The guy that was at the Dealership pointed out what it looked like with the Doghouse off.He was wrong...lol. He said it was in the same place as yours.But...NOT
Yes. I have heard that they are up front on the newer ones.
Hey,thanks for the info. :)
They name my van, the RobaChicos, The child kidnapped...🤣😁😂
Would the EGR valve cause my dads astro van to go off if he don't give it gas?
+scorpio cabrera It could. If it gets stuck open, the engine will stall when idling. It will stay running when it is revved up, but when you let off the gas it will stall.
So do you think its the EGR or we might have a fuel pump problem? it only stays on when its being reved
+scorpio cabrera I think it is the EGR. Mine wouldn't idle, but it would run when revved up.
Oh and how loose should that pin be? Because on my car, i have to push it down pretty hard for it to move even after i cleaned it, should i soak it ?
Carb cleaner works too!
1988 had a vacuum operated EGR with no electronics.
It has to be regulated.
just curious, with EGR being dirty would cause acceleration problem? thx
Yes
Are You supposed to put M&M's in the hole before You reinstall the device? :oD
Good tutorial.
Yeah I have to do this every year. I soak mine in gas. Just the bottom part. If you us Arco gas plan on always having a ruff idle and it clogs it way faster
Whats arco gas ?
+Douglas Bellmore Jr. Fuel filter.
If this is an electrical part...should we use MAF cleaner???
You need to use something strong enough to break up carbon buildup.
what if i want to disable the egr valve ? if i put a piece of metal betwen the egr and the manifold? can it help or damege my engine ?
Hey I have a 95blazer when I take off the egr valve what clean it with oh those two little hose do I spray in side of it too
I used WD40 and let it soak a while.
Get help
Mine kept getting stuck open when i pressed on the gas, i am getting way better gas mileage too
im going to try this in my astro work van tnkz my frend u save me money ;)
+ernesto trujillo You're welcome.
Thanks, good information. We'll see if it does the job tomorrow. regards
You're welcome. I hope it works.
So did it work? Is there a video showing that it runs better and that the emissions passed or whatever? 🤷🏽♂️ I feel you've left us hanging brother 🤣
Yes. It worked. I had to do this every couple of years with the van.
LOL great commentary at the end
+jerry lawson thanks.
Maybe a wobble socket and a air wrench will do it?
wd-40 oil burn and soot again! I prefer choke cleaner! Its not oily and evaporates
hoohoo which way do these go back on i cant tell, does the part you cleaned out go up or down ? i have a 94
***** On mine, the two holes are different sizes, so I just matched up the holes to the one that's the same size.
An fxr is one sweet scooter.
True
Nice FXR!!!
Thanks
do we gota wipe down the egr or make shure no wd40 is in their before re installing it
+Peter Fix That is a good idea.
I cleaned mine with an oven cleaner spray it cost me $0.99 cents at the 99 cents store I sprayed it let seat for 15 mints. brushed with a used tooth brush do this 2 times and came out super clean.
That's clever! Oven cleaner is designed to remove baked-on gunk, so I'm sure it works great.
M&Ms are crucial for any repair
My 95 safari will sometimes hesitate on acceleration.
aliens dont use vans they got spaceships
i call it my raper van, you want some candy?
The plastic clip on your heater outlet connection is not seated correctly.
Thanks. Too late to fix it. I already sold the van.
Is it in the same location on a 2002 Astro?
Not sure what year they moved it, but I have heard that it is in a different place on newer engines. It looks similar, so you should be able to spot it.
Nice Scooter By the Way.....
Thanks
You're not cleaning it in the vid. Just breaking loose the carbon. To really CLEAN it, you need to remove the carbon with a solvent. In that case, you'd be wise to clean the egr tube and the port on the exhaust as well, or you're just leaving a large amount of carbon in the system.
my safari van idle rough dash vibrates and i smell unburn fuel it hessitates to start up i rev it a little to keep the idle
+Ibrahim Gaad that could be from the EGR valve. Or it could be something more serious. Cleaning out the valve doesn't cost any money, and it is pretty easy to do, so I would try that first.
Could be fuel pressure regulator
In my vehicle, the key must be in place when moving in.
helped alot ...thank you!
what year is yours? Mine is a 1987 so is the location the same?
1993. I think it is in the same place.
Did it run better
Getting a bad cold start
😂 never know when your scooters gonna break down 😂
Thanks help me solve my problem thank you so much.
This thing went bad on my 97 S10. Although it was completely bad and my truck was running like g
Mmm I like holes that connect to other holes
are you sure you snug those cap bolts good enough lol
david park Yeah!
decarbonising the engine with water do this much better and it remove carbon deposits allover the recirculation path and you can forget about EGR forever.
+diioriog Thanks. I'll have to try that next time. How much water do you use, and are there any risks involved? I'd hate to sieze up the engine or get water in the oil.
I meant clean it with and the two holes on the engine not the egr valve
I didn't clean the engine side. Maybe I should have.
can I boil the bottom metal part in a pan
I don't know for sure if it is waterproof. It probably is.
no use wd40 and break cleaner and varsol do not get the electrical solinoid wet in any way meaning the plug connector side
Yah mines bad,van chugs on take off
soak it in wd40 and measle piss
Brake cleaner fist to get the carbon out and then the liquid wrench
thank you very much!!!
+snaprollinpitts You're welcome.
People are only scared of your van breaking down in front of them and holding up traffic
Thank you.
Arif
I can fix anything wrong with a gmc safari or any gm car or truck real super quick with a simple phone call to caa
Guess we're supposed to know what cca is
: D sweet van right of way dominion explanation!.. thumbs up!. And no i dont want a ride, but thanks in advance!. ; D
Thanks! Keep on vanning!
Uhhh.....that would be the coil wire......
Thanks
