Great video, Matthew. I'm glad I found your channel and look forward to following it. A great comparison that demonstrates your advice is watching Dan Tyminski and Ron Block, with Dan on the D-28 and Ron on the D-18.
Thanks for the video! I have a custom shop D-18, built very similar to the 1937 authentic. It’s super light and super loud. I someday would like to have a D-28 built just like it.
I have a D-18 and a D-35! 35 for singing/strumming, d-18 for picking/lead!👍 You have one fine example of a D-18 there my friend, nice picking too😎👍 I’m subscribing!
@@jeremysuggs8345 Thank you my friend! My dad has a D-35. They are lovely guitars. Might need to introduce it to the channel soon! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
@@MatthewGentryGuitar Yup.. I know. I'm glad I can play and work on things improve. Used to play out electric blues Freddie King, Mike Bloomfield style. @ I love some Roy Clark. And Jerry Reed. You’re right, I enjoy listening to people play things I can’t or may not ever be able to play. Some people were just born with magic in their hands lol.
I have a D-18GE that is 20 years old now and a CEO 7. I love Adirondack and mahogany. I do have and appreciate rosewood, especially with an Adirondack top!
Great Video I agree mahogany will cut through the mix better opposed to rosewood as a sweeter more rounded sound but still very able to play lead and be heard

I don’t own a Martin yet, a little out of my budget. I love the Martin sound and the D28 would be my go to when the time comes. Dream guitar would be a Boucher BG-52, I’ve only been playing for just under 2 years and picked up a Furch D30 SM for $675. Solid Sitka and mahogany. Well built and serves me very nicely for now. Great comparison to the satin D18
@@TomWimmer I have had my hands on both Furch and Boucher guitars, but never owned them. Furch makes great guitars. Honestly, for me, as long as you have solid woods you’re good to go! But laminate guitars also serve a purpose as well. We may get into a video about that soon!
So, these tuners were actually on the guitar when I bought it. I do not see any logos that show the brand, but I believe they are Gotoh’s. They’re open back locking tuners. They work great, even though I would like to get me a set of regular open geared tuners one day for it.
Back in 2006 I chose a d28 clearance white model because I sing about 95% of the time I'm playing. I played a couple d18s and boy they sure sound good too.
Would love to play both and decide. I'm leaning towards the d28 but would love to hear them both in person. Now question is natural gloss or ambertone gloss which are stunning but not sure if would age well with scratches. Currently own a 000-15sm. Great guitar
I purchased a 2024 D18 standard last month. I also like Rosewood. Kind of wish I had waited for the 2025 D28, since it now has scalloped GE bracing. Ideally, a person would own both.
@@lilycat1694 Congrats on your new Martin D-18. It will serve you well. I haven’t got my hands on the new 2025 Martin D-28’s yet but the specs look enticing! There are also different older models that have forward shifted scalloped bracing. It’s not a D-28, but you should look into the Martin D-21 Specials on the used market. I have one and it’s great! They have forward shifted scalloped bracing.

I play fingerstyle open tunings and one of my guitars is a D18. It’s not as low end as D28 and works great for me but I love a nice D28
