The mm8 is one of the best boards I have ever played. It's a drag that they quit making them. I bought it's so-called replacement the MX88. Don't waste your money. It PALES in comparison. Granted, it has it has more space-let's land-on-Mars-patches. And, I suppose it'd come in handy for composing film scores for science fiction horror movies. However, those types pf sounds are pretty useless for someone who performs live shows with several different groups 3-5 nights per week. With the MM8 (MM stands for Mini Motif), I could change patches at the blink of an eye. It's possible change patches quickly on the MX88 but even so, the sound cuts off abruptly. With the MM8, there's little bit of "bleed over" (for lack of a better term). This makes patch changes smoother, less abrupt. With the MM8, it's essentially a one step process to.layer patches in the middle of a tune. This is absolutely crucial for the gigs I play. One of the group's I'm in uses horns players sometimes, but the budget can't always accommodate a 7 or 8 piece band. Hence, we go in as a 5 piece. In which case I cover the horn parts. I have yet to find a satisfactory brass patch on the MX88. On the MM8 there are several that really"cut through". The brass patches on the MX88...the ones that even sound brass have too much French horn tambor. Layering patches is a multi-step process on the MX88 where as its much easier on the MM8. The action is better on the MM8 but my issue with it on the MX88 is minor. Also, the MX seems to have a weaker signal when run through the PA compared to the MM8. Sorry to say it Yamaha, but your new and "improved" version of the MM8 is a true DISAPPOINTMENT and it's WAY over priced.

+israel Johnson yes, don't waste money on this board; buy a MOXF8 (at least). I have an MOXF8 and it's simply a beautiful machine! Of course, if you can afford the Yamaha Motif Xf, it's even better.

I have struggled with this to understand, I had the mm6 and I agree 100% that for some reason the mm6 and mm8 is far better than any mx6 or mx8

anyone ever pair one of these with a different brand rackmount....say a Kurzweil 2500R or 2600R? I'm looking to expand the MM8's sound library.
Roland integral would be killer. NI complete would be unbelievable but of course you would want a Mac.
