This is one of my favorite Richard III performances. Unparalleled acting. I especially love how he made the character his own.
the amount of emotion he gives through his voice and facial expressions alone, he's so so good
What else can you give emotion through besides your voice and facial expressions? Those are the main things
Seriously, if you're a Cumberbatch fan, a Shakespeare fan or just like good acting - watch this. An amazing performance by Benedict.
Duke of motherf*^%ing Gloucester
He deserved an emmy
I'm convinced he can play anyone, from a wizard to a king
+piplup2009 to a dragon
To a high functioning sociopath
A marvel super heroe 😝
+tatikto To a mathematical genius
agreed
I finally watched his Richard III last night. Absolutely chilling. Monstrous. I could barely sleep afterward.
Omg I knoooow! It was so amazing. Did you notice how expressive he was? Such flow. I Adore him
He will haunt you in your damn dreams
Can we just take a minute to appreciate this freaking voice! 😍😘
I appreciate it all day, every day. *swoon*
"I kill where I wish and none dare resist. ...
"My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!" ...
-Smaug/Benedict Cumberbatch The Hobbit.
Dear God, this man.
Why is he so perfect?
Because he just is. "When the gods give you a blessing, you don't ask why it was sent."
Richard III: "I can smile, and murder when I smile. I can add colors to the chameleon..."
Me: "Hell yeah you can!!!"
Timestamp that bit
god, he's such a great actor
Actors like him should get more recognition than they do. Just because they are more into unshowy performances, their brilliance is ignored by hundreds. Cumberbatch, without a doubt, is one of the best actors of this generation and many others. That shit right there, is the proof that he is a true actor. Not many are better than him.
he would make a perfect Severus Snape.
Alan forever ♥️
He does a pretty good Alan Rickman as Snape impression!
He doesn’t look anything like Snape though. His voice does has a sibilant quality that could make for an interesting Voldemort, and his appearance wouldn’t be an issue, as Voldemort ought to be a cgi character
Yes.. if they were to make a young Snape spinoff
I've always wanted them to make a film or series of what happened leading up to voldemorts first defeat, by baby harry. (I think they call it the first wizarding war?) When snape, Sirius, and others were younger, he could do that....
It's great to know that there are young actors who can use their skills to evoke such strong emotions. the older ones will not be with us forever......James Earl Jones, sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McLennan just to name a few.
I Agree Sir
Leopold Whylie For my money, McLennan's the best of the lot. Yet how few know his name.
do you mean... ian mckellen?
OMG I love his voice!!!
Daaaaaammn, that was intense man. God, his voice, sheer perfection ♡♡♡ I need to watch this show asap!
damn I'm pretty sure when he looked at the camera he looked straight at my soul 😂
+Rich King boys without a life yuk
+Rich King 😂😂 just because i like ben as an actor doesn't mean I've no life and dor you to reply to my comment you'd have to click on this video and why would you do that if you weren't interested ???
+Rich King 😂😂 you have no idea what you're talking about false accusing people because you're bored is just stupid 😂
+Battle Britain Have you even taken a DNA test to analyze your ancestry, you far right British nationalist? Odds are you have ancestry in places you despise.
It's a monologue. He needs to look at your soul well he's doing it. It's just the nature of the beast, really. You always break the 4th wall when you are monologuing.
I really like this character of Cumberbatch...so amazing
Benedict Cumberbatch is a brilliant actor. He plays Richard III very well. I saw how he visibly express Richard's desire to be out of the shadows of his father and brothers. Like he showed being a good brother but hides a bigger ambition that meant taking the crown of his nephews. Shakespeare's eat your heart out for Benedict had served it rare.
Shaking off the shivers of this scene my Benedict you stir my soul with this performance OMG gotta check this out
Bloody Lannisters.. errr i mean Lancaster's.
Isn't Richard a Stark...I mean York?
York, not Lancaster
MY KINGDOM FOR A HORSE!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
hahah
"Would he were wasted, marrow, bones and all,
That from his loins no hopeful branch may spring,
To cross me from the golden time I look for!"
I really felt that Benedict, thank you.
Cumberbatch is the best actor of his generation....
Benedict is my favourite actor😍Yessss
His inner Alan Rickman started to come out when he said "B... ones"
Holy Sh*t!!!!! It's Benedict Cumberbatch!!!!!!!!! Yuuuussss!!!!
He is such a talented actor. I can already see a BAFTA nomination (and hopefully a win!)
Rich King Oh get over it. If you don't like the man, stop watching things he's in. It's as simple as that. Coming here just to rant about how you disagree with another man's views is rather pathetic. And if your version of a 'traitor' is a man speaking on behalf of children who are escaping war zones then I will gladly be one too.
And racist to whites? Wow that is some entitled bullshit you just spewed out right there. Yes how dare people pick on white people it's not like white people raided, pillaged and plundered half of the world during the colonial era right? It's not like white people infringed on the sovereignty of so many countries and drained all their resources. Oh wait. They did.
Rich King how very eloquent of you. Give yourself a pat on the back for being such a masterful commander of the English language. You are an inspiration to people who cannot make coherent arguments without the use of offensive language. Good job. You seem to represent all the glory that your predecessors like Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens and Jane Austin stood for. Bravo sir bravo!
I'm not acting as if I'm better than you. I don't know you. And I'm not from England and English is not even my mother tongue. But at least I don't resort to vile and crude language unlike you. Can't think of better insults? Could you get a bit more original than repeating the same female anatomy? Bit of a broken record are you? At least try to act like you're older than a 15 year old.
By the way, your rather graphic focus on certain parts of his body is somewhat suggestive. Do you think about his body parts a lot? Can't say I do but to each his own.
Rich King 'school' me? Ha I'd like to see you try. Are you always this vile and threatening? Is your anger management as bad as your curious obsession with body parts? Call me whatever you want. It's not as if I would care either way. If you are bigoted enough to think your word is gospel then by all means do so. It'll convince me even more that you are a pathetic imbecile. And please for the love of god come up with more original insults would you? I'm starting to think you have the vocabulary of a 10 year old.
Mmm hmm a broken record at its finest. Are you this repetitive with the people you live with? Must be awfully dull to be around you.
He is by blood related to THE king Richard III VERY interesting how HE was chosen for this reenactment 😊
That's how the llluminati operates.
My blood! My blood! My kingdom for my blood!!
That's how mafia works
every English person is...
It is kind of interesting, but most people are related to royalty on some level. We all most likely have relations to Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, and many other royal households in Europe.
Benedict Cumberbatch playing his real life long distance relative! Lol.
Phenomenal actor ❤
You know? I keep forgeting Richard III is an Ugly character because he is always portrayed by HANDSOME actors, from Laurence Olivier, To Ian Mcallen, To Cumberbatch even the actor from the White Queen seriously every time I think about Richard a model comes to my mind
All kinds of Damn!!!! WHY does this man not have an oscar yet!!!!
lglp3 Because he’s a straight white male.
@@wotan10950 What are you on about? Every best actor Oscar winner for the last decade has been a straight white male. (Rami Malek, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, Eddie Redmayne, Matthew McConaughey, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jean Dujardin, Colin Firth, and Jeff Bridges)
I'm sure he eventually will - he's already had one nomination in 2014, but in that year he was up against Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything, and to be fair, Eddie really did produce the performance of his life. Even Benedict said Eddie deserved the Oscar. I'm certain Benedict will get an Oscar - my money is on him winning either for his upcoming role in How To Stop Time or for Rogue Male. Remember you read it here first!
Thank you.

I remeber watching this and being in awe of this show. I never cared too much for Shakespeare's plays. R&J is not my favorite, but I watched this then became obsessed with the War of the Roses. I'm currently taking a Shakespeare class. Richard III is this week's focus. Too excited for this
Further evidence Benedict Cumberbatch is an amazing actor.
Bene is soooooo goooooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Benedict!!!! Awww Yisssssssss!!!!!!!
best Richard III I've seen
Benedict Cumberbatch can play everything. but sometimes i wonder if that means he should play everything..
How does he play "everything"? He's doing normal amounts of work for an actor of his format.
Oh😂😂😂
hahah - and so true. A very one-dimensional Richard: plenty of angst but no sense of mischief. And no charm. A CGI Richard III. Blah.
Gave me chills
Heartbreaking, I think the best I’ve seen.
0:20 Smaug has awakened :D
Funny thing is he is actually related to Richard III...
Ben is awesome :D
My God, is he good.
Боже , я в космосе , его голос , взгляд и мимика держат в напряжении ...
Just binged the 2 series of this. This is the first time anyone speaks to the audience in all those hours. Freaked me out.
Damn, this is only 1:28 long but it gave me the chills...!
He's related to King Richard lll in real life.
THE UNDISPUTED KING OF VOICE ACTING AN ACCENT
I have chills

We'll hello! Dr. Strange!
This guy is working on like 3 projects at the moment..
Like in 2014
This man always understands the assignment
best man
Aww, have the rest of the scene when he talks about himself and how much he hates himself.
He reminds me of the dude that played in henry v back in 89
He is freaking terrifying!
Wow he just so captures the villany of Richard III. When listening to this speech I actually want to root for him.
Great actor...
Our Benedict comes from great stock, the gorgeous Wanda Ventham was a terrific actor in her own right starring in cult TV Series ‘UFO’!🌹🏴
if not for the imitation game, this would be his absolute best work so far. and the fact that he is of noble bloodline is a bonus.
Best of acting
It's elemantary, what was said...
Richard III - last English King to die in Battle. After that they became very limp of the wrist.
+Duncan Sands it's funny to think that the new model army's red uniforms were the reason British musketeers used red and became the Redcoats.
+Duncan Sands but still, it became one of the most enduring symbols of Britain and the empire
Henry the V through
The Golden Time !
Doesn't matter, I'm fan of Richard III !
Hello BBC, since you made other channels eliminate their videos of the hollow crown, could you please post the 'nightmare (dispare and die)' scene with Benedict Cumberbatch? I want to share it on fb, I think it shows a marvelous acting. Thank you!
Как тяжко понимать язык Шекспира, но как легко слушать речь Бенедикта. И где -то на заднем фоне эхо Рикмана...
Well you know, that grand ol Duke of York, he had 10,000 men.
I think this role is Cumberbatch's best performance ever, can't imagine anyone else as Richard now
I see Benedict Cumberbatch as the perfect actor to voice King Sombra from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Bendict will be the grinch!
holy shit, where can I watch this??? When is it out???
THANK.
It's fascinating how they shoot this. The whole of The Hollow Crown, it's shot like a typical movie--Shakespearean, but with people oblivious to the camera. And then, slowly, in this scene, you see Richard's eyes travel to the camera and you get the horrible sense that he sees *you*, and that he's now talking to *you*. It's a great way to go into Richard's famous soliloquies, and it's chilling.
.. very nice
This is where the great actors get to shine. When they stretch their legs and get lost in Shakespeare
Benedict Cumberbatch's Richard: Terrified, in Panic, Scary. A "Jesus", from one of the last scenes,
and among them, the most striking, in an anguished and morbid scream,
a hideous scream; and for being a lapse of panic and dread, unexpected disoriented amazement, so fast
by such uncontrollable and innumerable astonishing sensations that Ricardo so vile and blind did not calculate, is so sudden and artistically
impeccable and grand. Your Ricardo, Benedict, worked, by choice, and courage, of course, charmless, cold, thick, unbalanced, scary and sick constantly
clear in his gaze, gestures and mannerisms, confused and fearful with everything and everyone.
Your thirst for horror and disaster, without beauty or charm,
overflowing and, for himself, the actor, fed and tasting the hurt and hatred, rancor and coldness, when confronted,
by others, for being so vile, and in lapses, himself; seeing, perhaps, an inevitable end and limit, unexpected,
for himself, in his unbridled and blind assertive way of spreading such disasters, left him in shock and horror.
All this is expressed in his "Jesus", intense, dark and frightening. Benedict Cumberbatch's Richard,
created from the beginning blind and with all these perfidious variables they could only have this behavior on stage (from the shocking cry "Jesus")
the apex of the character and the play. Not so attractive and charming, for the chosen feelings, and for these reasons,
extremely challenging and courageous, in the work as an actor. Has, this artist,
a beautiful and grandiose merit to you for proposing to such difficulty and delivering a unique and fascinating
(despite the spectator's difficult digestion, and a reason for great appreciation and admiration for the magnificently executed work)
brilliant work as (true, as few who can have in this art of calling themselves with justice and merit) actor; and that lives up to what the great author wrote.
Great and rare artistic achievement, limited to a few since always in centuries, with justice, of course, by the difficulty of the excellence of the art. A great pleasure I share with the art world; a
record of the magnificent capacity that the human being can reach, made by such an artist who,
he deserves all the laurels and respect.
Yes, I love the evil and charming Richard of Lawrence Olivier the ironic and pleasant of
Ian Mckellen; but Benedict's is so low and brave for expressing a hideous human face; a shocking ugliness
with such an impact that, due to its hard work, it is of rare artistic beauty. So sure that, for me, it would be Richard that Shakespeare would be most
excited and proud; would have in a whirlwind of sensations, varied, uncertain conjectures, incomprehensible and instigating
of your own text and character. I only regret not having, such work, the due
recognition and artistic merit. However, it is natural, for what is sometimes without measure brilliant
and fantastic in art, it takes centuries for a proper understanding and recognition of such
greatness. But that, in truth, does not matter, since the responsible artist, in some way,
knows what he produced and, therefore, such a natural and inexplicable understanding of the artist, to the
few, like me, who in time, know the magnificent essence of the work, it is a grace and comfort.
Great work. An honor and fortuitous jewel to art. Congratulations, big and rightfully (again, for few)
to whom I can say, certainly, to have the real office of actor: Benedict Cumberbatch.
Can't wait t see it!
Common folk in Shakespeare's day must have spoken the same way his characters spoke or they wouldn't have sat through his plays.
What are you talking about? I lived in Stratford upon Avon and the theatre was packed for every performance every evening. I was a teenager when I last saw one but they were always special evenings.
I need more!
Surprisingly they are related
This is really good. You really believe it. My only thing is the eye contact is a bit weird for me. I think it's because he's playing it quite inward so when he does those little aside comments to himself (1:03) it works, but when he goes back to eye contact there's a lack of connection with the audience. This is initial viewing so maybe I'm wrong.
Second viewing - The nuances are really great. I think the issue is that he's not bringing it out to the audience. If he looked away for the whole monologue, I think he'd be more relaxed. And that's fair enough: A camera doesn't have a face, so trying to connect to it is just a weird thing to do. Or maybe, as an audience member, I'm just not used to it. I don't know; I didn't mind it in the David Tennant 'Hamlet'.
Kay, third viewing. I think it might be that robotic reptilian move he does in the beginning (0:20). I don't know the play, so maybe that's the character, but it just kinda shook me. Maybe I'm supposed to be shaken during this. About the performance itself, I think he could translate it to us better. He can be quite pause-y and sometimes that means I'm working extra hard to remember all the pieces of what he's giving to us. That said, he knows what he's saying and I could follow. It's just those 'televisual pauses' in Shakespeare should be used scarcely imo. Breaking up a thought line makes the audience work harder to follow it.
Diction could be a bit better, especially at 1:08 which I completely missed on first viewing. Maybe I'm nit picking though, could be that I need to see all of this in full to get into the flow of it.
Pretty good though! Nice to see Benedict doing Shakespeare again!
+I Do Monologues I think we are meant to be shaken quite a lot with RIII's character in general. Personally, I love the fact that that they chose to do soliloquies/monologues by breaking the fourth wall. Makes it all the more chilling. Like Francis Urquhart in the original House of Crads. But better.
JellyLovesFaith
Aye, I definitely think the 4th doesn't exist in Shakespeare. Just something about this clip seems weird.
And I completely forgot about House of Cards! Yeah, that's a good one. Kevin Spacey seems to be really going for niche stuff like Netflix series or Videogames. Avant Garde if you will lol
Would you recommend the play? :)
+I Do Monologues The fourth wall does exist in nearly every play ever.
0306babylove
What makes you say that?
I Do Monologues About the fourth wall, I think (depending your choice when it comes to adapting it) it does exist - and quite bit. A lot of Hamlet productions choose to have Hamlet's soliloquies addressed directly to the audience. It's more powerful that way. You get a real sense that you're a part of the play and not just an outside viewer.
Yes I would recommend the play. It's not an easy read but it's fascinating. Whilst I'm not a fan of the many historical inaccuracies in it (especially regarding Richard III - but hey Tudor propaganda, what can you do?) it's a very nuanced look at what can drive a man to commit horrifying deeds. It's a very powerful and memorable play.
Yeah Spacey is brilliant in the US version but I was referring to the original BBC version with Ian Richardson. I was referring to this one because when Francis breaks the fourth wall in this version, there is much more of a maniac quality to it. With the US version, you always know that underneath it all, Frank is a rational man. With the UK version, towards the end, you tend to doubt Francis' sanity a little and his broad smiles hint at psychopath qualities. I'd say the UK version is closer to Richard III.
nice videos
Scene done at the wrong time in the play . It’s supposed to be done in Act 3 . This is actually a very abridged version of Shakespeare’s longest soliloquy
where can i watch this? i dont have the bbc channel here. can i download it from somewhere?
You can buy it at Amazon.
Benedict is my child. And i NEED the next episode of Sherlock! I mean honestly if i can not watch dr.who cos moffat is working on Sherlock i get to be a little impatient.... [].[]
Snape, Snape, Severus Snape
petition for Benedict Cumberbatch to be in game of thrones.
If they made a prequel series about Robert's rebellion he'd make a good Jon Arryn in his prime.
Not going to happen, I'm afraid. Between his commitments with Marvel, BBC, and his own film company, he is booked solid for the next SIX YEARS. Yep, six years.
General Caesar a little bit of makeup he could play a mean Mad King.
Wait when did they do the next play >.
For me, the definitive Richard lll of film is Ian McKellen's 1995 version
Yass
looks like Severus Snape!!!!!
Oh, yes oe of my greatest dreams made real! :D
The Office.
Mmm that's nice ☺️
tudor propaganda ofc...richard of gloucester was a faithful, loyal son of york. his motto..my honour binds me x
Benedict needs to rest omfg
He’s actually related to Richard the Third
Is this available on dvd?
boromirtheboring yes
Is he not related to King Richard the 3rd???
