  • Balder is an Intamin pre-fabricated wood coaster at Liseberg. This ride opened in 2003 as Sweden's only wooden roller coaster. It's a triple out-and-back coaster chalk full of ejector airtime. But is it too repetitive for its own good? Find out in this review!

Balder is a pure fun ride for me. I dont mind the repetitiveness and the turns, all those camelbacks and hills never fail to put a smile in my face.

The hills most certainly deliver. The pacing just isn't perfect for me.

I never had a problem with it being repetitive. I find every stretch with bunny hills to feel different and the overbanks are kinda fun in their own dumb way. Plus that airtime is so good I don't mind it being thrown at me more than necessary

I have no qualms with all the airtime hills. I don't get the same enjoyment on the turns.

One thing I will say with Balder is that it felt to me like a modern take on Phoenix abundance of airtime and few laterals. And thats one thing with Liseberg I like its a classic style park with a modern touch.

It does sort of feel like Phoenix with the set-up.

intamin pre-fabs are subscription based coasters at this point. it'll be an elite experience with loads of airtime, but you're gonna have to renew in 20 years 💀

I just rode two days ago. Felt even faster than my last rides 4 years ago. And glass smooth. To me it is a masterpiece of coaster design, my fav woodie of them all. Not a single inch of track wasted in one of the most compact designs ever. To me, the “gentle” turns compare to the slow tempos on a masterfully orchestrated symphony, intensifying the sensorial overload of the upcoming airtime hills, giving you a chance to catch your breath and share complicity with your riding partner. It is exhilarating and elegant at the same time. Repetitive? More like “irresistibly repetitive” I would say. A state of the art modern re-invention of the timeless classic cyclone coasters. As for Liseberg, I cannot think of a better park really with more allure, attention to detail and magical atmosphere. Every coaster is top of their category. Quality over quantity. Its their 100th anniversary and they deserve all the praise.

That's an interesting take on the turns, but I prefer full throttle start to finish.

Until late may of 2022 I'd never ridden any Intamin prefab woodie, then I rode El Toro during a rough time; after it had opened after a year long closure and also about two months before it closed again for another year. I'd say T-Express is the best of the four with Balder coming last. Thanks for posting!

T-Express definitely appears to be the best.

Balder is running way faster now than it did in 2019. those ending hills have ridiculously strong airtime that matches a lot of RMC hills.

I thought it had more power for me in 2017 even though it was a cooler day with half full trains.

Great review. I actually preferred my rides this year to my original ones in 2017. For me, it felt more intense this time. Perhaps it's because I was disappointed from 2017 and went in with diminished expectations.

The fact i rode this in winter and it still hauled goes to show how insane the airtime is on this

In 2001 Colossos opened at Heide Park. In 2016, the ride was closed.
Those who rode Colossos last time said it was...
    A) smooth
    B) rough

I saw in videos and images, that I think Balder, the Intamin pre-fabricated wooden coaster at Liseberg, and Coaster Express, the RCCA wooden coaster at Parque Warner Madrid, both use the same trains and restraints.
    Canobie Coaster would say: Yes.
If I ask you: But what are the most notable differences between them in ride experience for you?
    Canobie Coaster would answer:
    A) Balder is smooth
    B) Balder is rough

At last… a RUclipsr attempting to pronounce it properly! Having said that, I’ve heard park employees pronounce it the ‘English’ way when speaking English themselves, so maybe they just kinda give up and say what their English-speaking audience is expecting?

It's a shame that the Intamin prefabs all have pacing issues. The Ride of Steel clones do too though, so I think that's something that Intamin sometimes struggled with back then. Is the first turnaround on El Toro better than the ones on Balder?

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Год назад +1

The turnaround on El Toro would be better if it were smooth.

5:58 the anti rollbacks are one of the best aspects of wood coasters. Sucks that they use a magnetic system to keep them raised
