- The MG ZS electric is probably the best value pound-for-pound new electric car on the market. That makes it easy to recommend, even though it's still not that good.

MG ZS EV review: www.honestjohn...
As someone has pointed out, the Excite (basic) version of the ZS EV doesn't have a panoramic sunroof as standard. Apologies. Don't lose sleep over it. I won't. :-D M. x
Also the battery in under the floor not under the back seat.
Petrillo123 zbornak well aren’t you lovely. You might get your wish, but either way I hope you don’t lose your job. In fact I hope you get a promotion and have a wonderful 2020, so that whatever it is that’s making you so angry subsides. Love, me. **high fives** x
MG website currently (16 Dec 19) shows the OTR price at ₤22,245 and ₤24,245 for the two model variants.
You should study EVM for balanced reviews and presentation, his is for Everyman not just ‘boy racers’.
After discounts, the Kona is nearly 50% more expensive than the MG - so the fact that it is noticeably better should not be a surprise. But at this end of the market, that's one hell of a price differential - to many people, the Kona is simply not an affordable option.
Hyundai kona 5-10 grand more and not available
the 'bottom spec' DOESN'T have a panaoramic sunroof.
Enjoyed the review
A couple of points
Your driving an early pre production model (19 plate probably)
Parking brake, I never touch it, automatically released when belted up, ok pressed and drive selected. Applies automatically when park selected
Bongs can be switched and yes they are annoying
Software on the pre production press car has always been a nightmare. Drove a couple of test cars and everything was slow and constantly lighting up, haven't had that with the one I purchased
Ask for a test drive in a 69 plate car. Take the lane assist/ steering off as it gives a feeling the cars wandering unless your on a motorway. The cars version of the middle of the lane and yours isn't the same.
Like all cars it has it's good and bad points. I expect the worst draw back for you is it doesn't have an engine. However the advantage of no engine is that 100 miles is about £3.25. (home charge 11p per kw Symbio) no congestion charge, no road tax and hopefully no tax when the government decided to get some revenue in to combat diesel emissions
It's not a Tesla (which are brilliant) because if it was a Tesla you would only own half the car
The car needs an app, Over the air updates, an outside temperature display, window tints, a type 2 charging lead to be supplied as standard. The software could be improved because who ever wrote the software never used it day to day. It's just little changes that would make a big difference (at the moment it only charging when the cars locked)
Check out James & Kate's 3000 mile review or Teslabjorn Thai MG ZS EV
Hope this help
It's not 28k but 22k and 24k including gov incentive.
Another perfectly honest and quite thorough review, well done friend. At least you didn’t slag it off because it hadn’t got a German badge on the front, unlike another certain reviewer I could mention.Ahem.
The first 2000 customers bought this car for 21.500 pounds, the basic model, after mg discount and government discount. Colour of infotainment not very tasteful! At least you have apple car play and Android auto on it.
I suppose it is a package that has been built to a price.
It’s not £28k
An honest review, and the Kona and Niro aren't really available to buy and the Leaf has no battery thermal management, so at the moment it doesn't have much competition. And its cheap.
Impressive free wheeling performance there...not by the car.
Manufacturers put soft touch plastics on the bits you don't touch, because hard plastics are hard wearing!!!
Your tattoos were more interesting.
I think the videos are a bit more dynamic when you’re standing up in front of the green screen. Bit Val Doonican if you’re sitting down all comfy. 😀👍
That bong thing is annoying af... Can it be shut off? Can imagine a baby being woken when the engine is started. That will probably eliminate the road/wind noise issue. I know i'll probably not even see one of those on the road, still watched
Go into the menu and turn off the audio alerts for the different functions, lane assist etc. The find mycar option set to lights or off ( not horn)
I think there are a couple of things you can't switch off, like key in car when you get out and close/ lock door
Cancelling the lane assist isn't switching it off, just makes it bong more because you have temporarily cancelling it.
The green screen has it’s advantages but there is not much in it. The “home feel” makes it feel like you’re doing it in your back bedroom.
It depends on what image you want to give out, do you want the “visiting mate telling me about cars” or the you tube one step down from TV. What you need is something regular and steady, choose a theme or background and stick with it. Yourself, fully charged and AutoExpert.com.au are my 3 favourite car channels on you tube but if you look at Auto Expert, ditched the green screen about a year ago and now just uses the same background of tools, slightly out of focus but you do notice it. Good luck on whatever you decide to do but as a Multi Drop HGV driver who has never done a single car review in his entire 36 years on the planet, you can fully respect the experience and expertise i have acquired while watching you tube videos on my hour break every working day. I hope you, you’re team and your family have a good Christmas 👌
It's cheap and cheerful, the lack of overall quality would put me off, great shopping trolley and for popping around town, but avoid motorways as range drops drastically and noise levels can become unbearable
I prefer Hyundai Kona Electric 64kWh battery version.. longer range.. 415 km rated range from "the states."
I like the car might go down to local mg dealership and have a look
Before doing that, perhaps look at some vids of crash tests of Chinese-designed cars.
numbereightyseven Perhaps you should have a look at the NCAP safety rating of the MG ZS EV (It got a maximum 5* rating if you don’t want to look).
The new set-up.. may I also recommend a roaring fire and chunky knit cardigan?
Another good, honest review, thanks Mark. In the shots of you driving the ZS, I was transfixed by that tiny triangular porthole in the c-pillar, which is completely useless, either for for rear three-quarter visibility or letting light into the cabin, so a pointless flourish.
Love the bit at the end , Tesla drivers always lose their minds when your criticise their cars lol where’s the Eqc vid man!
For me personally - combo of green screen and video in a test car is best review phylosophy.
So it has a natural live feeling in car, but also feels scripted and safe, includes clear tech. data and bloopers with green screen or vase in your living room.
Still more interesting reviews than Carwow. Ditched them a year ago, when started making review episodes of duration of "Friends" or "Big Bang Theory". Autogefuel makes movies, not a reviews
.
Are comparing like for like with the kona ev and the niro?, seems like a big range difference for cars that have the option of the same battery pack
Liked the change away from green screen. Excellent review as always.
The MG “BMW bongs” EV.
You obviously never heard a BMW bong
@@delboy2596 obviously not, after having owned a couple in the last 10 years.
"Donkey strapped to the roof with a pig on it's back" - another classic.
That's my flat behind the donkey strapped to the roof with a pig on it's back! Bow Square in Southampton!
"I recommended it to a friend"
... or as I now call her, an ex-friend.
What watch do you wear? (Watch nerd)
Aquaracer 43. Auto, obvs. 😁👌
I thought it was just me that noticed this sort of thing. Good question.Aqua racer......new ones are lovely.
Looks to me like a Zoe is better in every way. Especially when you use the app to preheat in the cold mornings but can't (yet) in this.
Only thing this has going for it over the Zoe is it's higher up which means it will probably sell 10-1 becasue people are stupid.
Also a Zoe isn't £19k when you include the battery.
Or maybe, they are sensible and you are stupid?
Well being higher up seems to be more expensive in every way. But safer till you hit something lower and the car roles. I drive a mondeo with the lower sport suspension i'm like the perfect ramp to these SUV's.
@@keithoneill6273 Great reply. Anything sensible to add or are you only capable of semi literate nonsense?
@@siraff4461 Thanks. You've proved my point.
It. Is. Not. An. MG!
Yeah it is.
No it is not. It is Chinese
Yeah it is... what car is exclusively any make these days? It's a name, a badge. My last MG was the best ever built - a Rover 75 with a Ford Mustang V8 shoehorned in - a hoot to drive though hardly an MG sports car of old. I get the nostalgia bit, but also accept that things are global these days.
Electric :) No emissions. Clean air to breathe.
U r quickly becoming my favourite Car reviewer. I really like that u compare & contrast the MG with other cars in terms of range, the fillings and price. That all helps to give a insight into what MG / Gheery (?) r aiming for.
As an aside, I don’t think u mentioned charging. I know some reviewers hv had issues with the accessibility of the plug. Also I know that not all elec cars can use all elec charging points; how does the cable fit into all/ most /some charging points ? Also how long does the MG take to charge ? Yeah, sori, more Q’s than I thgth. But Excelt still Review !!
Ps. Personally not over-awed by the hanging photo frames but didn’t find it distracting...
Ha! 10:57 Having to remind people you're not slagging people off personally because you give the car they drive an indifferent review. Sadly necessary!
While the range is fine for most of my trips when I want to go some distance I'd have to rent a car or wait for ages recharging somewhere just doesn't seem practical for single car households at all. For me it would have to be a plug-in hybrid like a Prius. It just feels such cars aren't fully developed yet and in the next couple of years they will be massively improved. Also it would be great if there was a standard in battery packs that were interchangable. Every manufacturer is doing its own thing which is complete rubbish. I can see a standard developing in the future. Then you could just rent additional battery packs for longer journeys. For me the MG ZS makes more sense as a petrol SUV as so cheap with such a long warranty meaning extremely low purchase price and running costs unless you are a high mileage driver this feels like its not that far away from better vehicles in price. So I'm the opposite of this reviewer seeing more sense in the petrol version especially as safety is slightly reduced in these Chinese MGs and its has a explosive battery pack on board.
you are brilliant! - No, YOU are brilliant!
I liked the new set-up and the usual great review.👍
Yet another reviewer who can't be bothered to get his facts right before he opens his mouth.
Is this about the panoramic sunroof thing? This reaction seems a little strong. If anything I've made the car sound better. :-D
3:59 *What the heck have you been driving recently, for around the same price as the MG ZS EV I bagged a pre reg 19 Plate from local Mercedes (81 Miles) B200CDi AMG with Premium Pack with build quality on another level. The interior is unbelievable and leader is **_'State of the Art'_** as to date achieving in excess of 60 mpg it will take 'forever' to recoup any savings, even if have access to 'Free Charging' The ICE 'Engine' is almost totally silent, and in ECO Mode which I use a lot, actually 'freewheels' when throttle off. 8 speed Auto Gearbox and would challenge anyone to detect upward changes, totally smooth and imperceptible. Only had it 4 weeks but not tried 'Sport' mode as yet, as in my previous model (W246) found it awesome and be careful in use, it will spin the wheels abd bomb off like a rocket. All I have to say is Mercedes "Navigate to Home" and guess what a hybrid and fully EV will be launched in mid 2020*
But it's a diesel, which is now like buying a steam engine. Also, why would you want to be another slave to the oil companies?!
@@tris7 *Before a reply such as this, I suggest you go to your local Mercedes and request a Test Drive of the latest 'B' Class, and I did think long and hard as I did have a small profession hand in designing the W247 in Dortmund December 2016, where was informed of the new power options to be released in 2019/20. More recently was awaiting information from Mercedes on both the (Plug in 30 mile range) Hybrid and the full Electric but MB unable to tell me anything, but I did find in Germany the new A class 1332cc Petrol / Hybrid costs £4½ K more. No info on Full EV but to me that doesn't make any sense, although many of my journeys are less than 30 miles it didn't make (to me) economic justification, even if Electricity FREE. My expressed view, which you appear to have missed completely is that you can purchase for around the same price as the **_cheap China Made 'MG'_** a quality vehicle that absolutely is on another level. Would you put your children in danger as the MG 3 Star Rating well below industry standards, which is disgraceful in 2019/20. By the way I have many shares in Royal Dutch currency trading at £22.65 each, so **_no slave_** !*
Interestingly it was the large savings currently available on ICE cars which made me look for a new car. Went to the local MG garage for a different reason, and there mentioned that I'd not driven an electric car before. Had a drive, borrowed it for the following day. Order placed the day after that. This car feels like a new era.
@@Marknorthway Great best wishes to you and hope you have many safe and enjoyable journeys.
After recently becoming an owener of one, you're review is spot on. Nice car but needlessly falls short in a few areas, however if they car actually got its 150 mile claimed range and got rid of the bongs i would give it 10/10
As another owner I would agree with your thoughts. It’s not an Audi EQC but does a lot for a third of the price (probably for quarter of the price once the Audi is optioned up to be similar)
@@MarkGarnettUK Absolutely mate, agree. Out of interest what are you getting range wise out of it? And are you find there to be quite a few rattles in yours?
The Boxing Talk Podcast the guess-I-meter is pretty accurate. In fact slightly pessimistic which is the way I prefer it. So in winter it is not 164 but to be honest bits double my previous EV (rated at 87) that I don’t worry about it, esp as can rapid charge (prev EV would only “fast” Charge which was too slow if you wanted to gain useful miles in 40 mins). One rattle (more of a vibration) is in the instrument cluster). The bongs ate more noticeable than any rattles!
@@MarkGarnettUK Interesting mate, thanks for your reply. Maybe i should get my rattles looked at.
The Boxing Talk Podcast ghhj
I usually love your videos, but unfortunately there are a lot of things you say in this that aren't right, regarding specs of the trim levels, pricing, etc. I think you should also state that the Hyundai Kona range that you have listed is the shorter range. There is a big battery version which has a similar range to the Kia e-niro.
I do still think you are a fantastic reviewer though!
He's also wrong on the Zoe price. The price quoted is for the base model (post October 2019). The MG Exclusive spec is nearer to the GT line, which whilst it has a bigger battery does not have Adaptive Cruise Control and is £28,000 plus. 3 weeks ago I cancelled my order for the GT line and ordered an MG Exclusive. Range being not that important as the CCS charging will suffice and I'd rather have ACC.
