- Study / Dining vs Living / Bedroom. I'm moving on to renovating the next room in my old Swedish house, after having finished the Kitchen and Boot Room. But which should I choose? Sharing inspiration images, plans and some 3d views of what I hope the next room will look like.

Next thing to renovate should be the chimney. You need that to keep the house and you warm. :)

I was thinking the same. Or at least what will it take to fix that and make it functional. Might find it’s better to do before working on rooms. Renovations tend to always be a little more than one expects and it would be a shame to do work only to have to redo parts when it’s time to work on the chimney and fireplace
She already addressed this before i think. It is expensive enough to hire someone to asses, its really expensive to repair it according to the person. Shes put that in hokd because she has heaters for the time being.
Working on the chimney wouldn't impact me working on another room in the house, as it will mean me hiring someone to do it while I continue my own thing. It does however require money I don't have at this very moment, and also weather warm enough to do things like laying bricks, so it's simply not an option right now
Have you thought about making the timber room your living room AND. Dining room? And leaving the room you're living in as your bedroom? It would save you so much work and cost! Your guests could stay in the living room in the future with the pull out. It seems a waste to make one room a dining study room. Your kitchen is beautiful! Can't wait to see the rest.
My thought was the upstairs seems a good next move. It is already pretty deconstructed and if you get it tight and finished it would help the lower floor stay warm.
Agreed possibly cut out a dormer for an added bath.
The first thing would be to have utilities at a house , I would fix the fireplace , to have heat 😍🙏
Fixing the fireplace is not in the way of renovating the rest of the house as I'd need to hire someone to do it and I can continue doing other things. But it does cost money which i don't have at this moment, and it's also too cold for a lot of the work they'd need to do, suck as laying bricks!
Your living room can also be dining and your current bedroom/study room can stay like that. That seems reasonable, to have your sleeping area separated from daily area. I really like your home 😊
I’d do up the guest house to live in - it’s so cute! Then it would be available for guests once you move back into your house. I do love very small spaces though - I currently live in a tiny van!

I agree. I'd fix the guest house in winter while living in the house. Then, in summer, I'd live in the guest house while fixing the bedroom. Seems a better option.
My only issue with this would be that building materials are really expensive now and I would want at least the main cabin finished before starting to invest into the other buildings on the property.

I hope you don't mind me spending your money.🙂..At 7:03 there's a perfect shot of your back door and its little roof. If you have more corrugated roofing, you could extend it to the corner of the house, then enclose the area and put a door at the end. So basically a little weatherproof extension/Instant workshop, storage for your wood and home for your saw. Then you could restore your lounge and sleep where you sleep now. It would be a very useful space for cutting/sanding/painting

I kinda love the idea of living in the little guest house! You can make it so it's like a little place to eacape away from the "workplace" while you are renovating the house ☺️

Have you thought of taking a break from building during winter, doing your paid design work in your warm room, and then picking up the renovation work again when spring comes?
She does do her paying jobs. But then she also moves on with her renovation. Spending 24/7 in a small room for months only working on her computer doesn’t sound like a dream. When she s renovating she’s taking a break from her paying job and vice versa.
I thought the same. That unheated guest cottage will be a lot better in spring and summer!
I would be tempted to renovate the guest house first so that when you move in it will be comfortable for an extended stay, or tackle your attic but I understand that may take more materials and money than you currently have. I really enjoy watching your work and ideas unfold and appreciate your realistic approach to budgeting.
I am looking forward to the new build, but the guest house would be a dream to fix up.
Maybe your chimney fireplace could be fixed so you have heat in the winter
It will be fixed when I have the funds and when the weather warms up so the works can actually be carried out. It's too cold right now!
I might’ve actually done the loft. Then you would be able to sleep in it while you work on the other two rooms. And you might have it done in time that it wouldn’t be quite so cold with the ability to live up there.
I would have suggested you do the staircase and the upstairs bedroom next. Then you would have somewhere warm to live while renovating downstairs. Or make the guesthouse warmer and nice for future gests, then move into it while renovating the dining room. Whichever way you go about it, you will eventually have to move your workshop out of the house. Improving and/or extending your current shed could be an option, but that is of course better to do in summer. Good luck and keep up the good work!❤️
That is what I would do too, the fireplace --then the upstairs, it would make life so much easier than moving from room to room, as well as create a less stressful environment
Honestly, you must be the coolest person on this planet. Doing all that hard work by yourself and doing it so well! I really admire you, because wow, you are incredible!! I hope that in a few years, I will be able to move to Sweden, too, and your videos have helped me so much with keeping up my motivation and hope to live my dream. Dear Rosie, noooooooooo, noooooooo, stop! Don't move out of your room! At least not until spring! This is not only your living space but also your work space! You need a warm, comfortable and inviting space at least to work, that is how you make a living, that is a priority.
Cant you just work around the wood? Yes it will be a hassle but in reality isnt it more a hassle to live for months where you are not comfortable? If you move the wood to one side and renovate from left to right? You can do the ceiling and the walls right? Please don't give up your comfortable warm workspace 🙏🏼❤
Timber can't move... it's diagonal because it's the only way it fits in the front entry and living room! There's only some timber for maybe one wall, can't reach the ceiling. It's too much hassle for hardly being able to actually do anything...
@@wildrosie why dont you set the timber outside the house on stones or old wood pieces and put plastic over it? on de most protected wall of the house, maybe the roof will help prevent the timber from getting wet as well. seems not such a good idea to move out in winter, and you would have to heat two houses.

You need a new back entrance door ! I guess you have noticed it can be quite cold here in Scandinavia, so serious heating and insulation must be first priority when moving in to old houses 🥶🏠
I like the plan to temporary move into the guest house while renovating the living room. Not only will your living room be renovated, but spending a lot of time in the quest house your mind will find creative ways to make it comfortable and cozy for you and future guests. I love seeing your design process and your ideas. I would suggest having one room that it more private: a study/bedroom, and a room that is more public: a living/dining room, with the possibility of extra sleeping room for guest.
I would do the attic next. Convert it into two parts. Part one the bedroom & part two an office/ guest bedroom.

Currently catching up on the series but I think the most affordable option instead of fixing the chimney would be a wood burning stove. I can’t wait to see what you do. I’m trying not to skip ahead as I’m a year behind lol

Your designs are beautiful, it will perfectly fit with the kitchen! I was thinking during the winter you may fix the guest house, then you'd keep your warm room and then, when better days will come you'd be able to switch in the guest house to restore any of the 2 rooms in the house (with storing wood outside or in a sort of greenhouse?).
For guests, I'm ok that vans or tiny houses solutions are good; you can find plenty of ideas for couches with storage ( cubes underneath the couch which become seats when out and bed assembled to the bench ). It's always hard to make choices, but when it will be done I know you will go for it, as you did until now!

You’ll get there eventually you’ve got this you always follow through, and if you need a break you can pack up your back pack and a few nights in the forest should do you good 👍
Do what you want, it's your home. But I would make the larger room a living room/dinning room and the smaller room a bedroom/study.I have a cabin and when l first bought it l had a living room/bedroom and it got really old fast having to put the bedding away every morning and because they were the same room it made me feel closed in . So l changed things up after that 1st year. Now l enjoy having the sleeping area away from the living area.
I would suggest working on making an alternative dry wood storage area outside and keep your functioning bedroom during the winter months. It is worth investing the time and resources on a separate dry workshop/storage when you own an old house. Alternatively, you could store the longer pieces of wood in the attic and make the guest house into a toolshed. It is possible to work much faster if the house is empty and you don't have to keep going in circles shuffling things around in rooms you have already finished.

I am excited to see what you do, your plans sound great. Just me but if I lived there I would make over the little guest house first and happily move into it. Once you had your stuff out the other two rooms of the house would get done much quicker and by the time your Mom came back you'd be moved back in.

Really enjoying seeing your designs and hearing the thought process for tackling your next project. There are difficulties but you always find a way…I admire that about you Rosie. When you’re at that stage, and if you have space to spare, wall mirrors would bounce light and enlarge the cabin. The bookcase idea is awesome too.
Definitely whatever you come up with will be the right solution since no one knows the space and available resources better than you! It will be beautiful and functional as always. I understand the desire to use what you currently have to move on to the next phase-I would make the same choice :)

I love the design. I’ve seen that design in tiny home builds. In a small home you don’t want to necessarily dedicate a bedroom for guests when they come few days per year but it’s still nice to have space for everyone to be comfortable. The clean lines and minimalism is my fav style. Can’t wait.
You could move your workshop to the guest house, or build a tiny home or shed for your workshop. That's what I would do. Or add on (to the house) to your current bedroom/desk area. Or you could add a loft/upstairs as your bedroom.

Quite agree with the comment above, please try and get the chimneys repaired before the next winter. You need heating in every room, it must be so cold for you. Apart from that, your ideas are so inspiring
Your home(s) plus your shed are such a great investment.... It's so inspiring to watch all that you do and have already done... Dear Rosie, I cannot stop watching your videos as they remind me so much of my own struggles and joy of rebuilding my own old cottage in the remote countryside by myself 25 years ago. I'm an artist of 66 now and still love the life in nature by myself, but with a dog. I am also hooked on watching the videos of Martijn Doolard, about renovating an old stone cabin in the Italian alps. In case you don't know him, please have a look for his videos on youtube, I highly recommend them. You two must be soulmates, he travelled the world on a bike before, just like your hiking. I wish you all the happiness you can imagine, keep going your lovely way!

I would wait until spring. Use your greenhouse as a shop, you could extend it, if you need to, and stay in your comfy area when you do your shop room. 😊

Another option: instead of clearing the total room, can you clear one wall? Then renovate that wall just through the corners. Then reorganize and attack another wall. The amount of would will decrease over time. You could stay in your cosy room. Beats the “quest hut”.

The chimney/fireplace is obviously a problem. Would it not be better to completely remove it, and opt for a free-standing wood burner? It's what we did in one of our houses, and the result was excellent - efficient heating, and a saving on space.
Problem...that old fireplace - or tiled oven indeed, heat-storing oven- will be excellent when fixed: you have to put only once or twice a day some wood in it. Reserves heat nicely for a long time. Much more economical, and needs less work and time, and wood, for heating than some wood burner.
Could you put the lumber in the attic and store across beams? That would allow you to live in the room you are and Reno the living room

Hi Rosie , good plan , Your living in your renovation project and on a budget that’s not easy . Your progress is fantastic . A couple of foam mattresses on the floor Can be beds And put anywhere. Once the space is cosy a simple hinged hand made screen can be privacy and a piece of art all in your living/bed room now work room , if your short materials , Visitors don’t stay to long , and mostly will visit in summer , except maybe close family , also a summer out door. Camping experience can be offered to some . Make your own bed comfortable . Wishing you the best .

Why not start by cladding the walls in the timber room, and other little projects until the weather gets warmer...then you can do your room withouth sacrificing all of your comfort.....
I might have enough timber to clad one wall and then I won't have anything else I can do... I have no choice really!

I like the plans and understand the combination rooms per your lifestyle, they make sense.
I, personally would not move to the guest house;
#1 reason, it's too cold.
Too much of an inconvenience in several areas.
I'd want to be closer to the bathroom & kitchen and things used daily instead of feeling like camping out in the guest house.
I think, I'd make the upstairs a bit more comfortable & move your stuff up there, maybe even sleep up there while you finish the down stairs.
Just my thoughts.
Unfortunately upstairs is mostly like a shed and much, much less comfortable than the guest house!

I totally agree with the person who wrote you should start with the guesthouse! You can make it cute and livable while still having a workstation & a space for the timber in the living room and then you can use it as your bedroom when it gets warmer. Then you could tackle the dining room and then living room when the chimney guy comes :)

Paint the whole room white, Then the book case could be painted in a stronger dark green color compared to all the relaxing calm timber, that would be one easy way to make the book case a statement in the room. I dont know depends on how you build the room on what colors would look good if you decided to paint vs stain
Renovate the room with the tools and lumber next. You can still occupy your current living area. Then by spring you'll be able to move into the lumber room and keep tools and lumber outside.

I wonder if it would be possible to avoid having to move out by moving all your stuff to one half of the room, renovating the free half, then moving everything to the finished half and renovating the other one? You could cover your things with sheets during the day to keep the dust off it and you'd be able to work in a warm room at the same time. Not sure if that would work space-wise, though.
Alternatively, there's your attic, though I suppose it would make more sense to tackle that once you know what exactly has to be done with the chimney. If you're hiring someone anyway, maybe they can straighten it out and get rid of that weird angle it has right now, which would give you more space in the attic. That would definitely be a project for the future, though.
I'm sure whatever you decide will work out - and whichever space you renovate, it will certainly mean you have less wood lying around in your workshop afterwards! I can't wait to see what you'll do with this beautiful house - the built-in bookcase in particular sounds amazing.

Nothing like a walk into the wild to clear the head...I can feel your constant 'should I', 'could I' moods...all of these ideas are fantastic, you have really done your homework, I'm impressed...but I totally agree with Bob Mac, you will always need a project workspace out of the weather to store wood out of the way and not have to keep moving it, then when the restoration is complete, it'll be the perfect small project room. Realistically, you will never be done with projects, I am the same way, constantly reinventing my space, I have a 3 bedroom, tiny bungalow, one room I totally use for my projects/studio...however I am currently working on a workspace for my garage to cut wood. I have only lived here a year, so I am still in the processing mode...love your models, it will be amazing when finished!

Oh please don't move out. You might get snowed in due to unpredictable weather. Just do the timber room and be contented until Spring arrives. You can also start on your build in furnitures too. How's that? :)
There's nothing i can do in the timber room with the materials I have available and everything still in it... Weather where I am isn't bad enough to get snowed in btw. And i don't have a car, so it doesn't really matter haha!
@@wildrosie as long as you have an alternativ rote thru an window, or such, it should be ok. Depending on the year we can get snowed in after an winterstorm all the way to the south of Sweden. I got snowed in just north of Gothenburg in 2010-11. We just climbed out the window with an shuffle. 😄 It doesn't need that many dm before one can't open the door if it heaps to close to it. You've protection somewhat by the roof but it's all depending the wind direction. If one get stuck just call the city or police and they will help to dugg you out, evetially. Best of luck the plans sounds exciting.

@@wildrosie Instead of leaving those timber sprawled across the room would it be possible to move it against the wall instead. For those long strips you could still lean it against the wall but diagonally. That was my thought. Leaving one wall free from any timber I thought you would be able to start working on your bookshelves :)
@@WyrdHag I agree that it is rare. But still it happens. As I wrote it happend to me. Bad luck with the wind during a bigger snowfall and you might havet an heap of heavy snow up against your door. If it is wet compact snow you might not be able to open said door.
