Jigokudani Yaen-Koen is known worldwide for its monkeys bathing in hot springs.
It is also famous as a "snow monkey" playing with snowballs.
At 850 meters above sea level, one-third of the year is covered with snow.
But a nearly 100-degree spring is gushing out just a short distance away.
The hot springs are probably the only reason the monkeys can live here.
The monkeys soaking in the hot springs look really nice.
The Jigokudani Yaen-koen is surrounded by steep slopes.
The monkeys play on the mountain slopes after warming up in the hot springs.

長野県にある地獄谷野猿公苑は温泉に浸かる猿で世界的に知られています。

標高850メートルのここは1年の3分の1が雪に覆われます。
けれども、すぐ近くに100度近い源泉が噴き出ています。
温泉があるからこそ、猿たちもここで暮らしていけるのでしょう。
