11 years after you did this video...I on a last ditch effort to save one of my fAvorite punches found your video and saved it from the trash! It took me a long time to get that first stopper out...but once I did it went very smoothly and I have a new punch!! Thanks!
I JUST found this video. I needed to fix my 2.5” circle SU punch. The instructions helped me fix it! Yay!! I am so proud of myself. Thank you, Dave!!!!
A super-helpful video, really clear. I especially like all the reminders to check how it will need to go back together. I have bookmarked this for when I need it!
Came here because I attempted to punch two thickness cardstock and the metal shifted. Bottom would cut, top would not. I followed Dave’s instructions, along with the following added tips and voila - my punch works again. $20 saved! To remove the cap: I used my spare metal tipped pokey tool to remove the first cap - it took a number of tries, and I found squeezing the punch closed while prying helped. The pokey tool tip and the cap mangled a bit, but it worked. I wasn’t careful when pushing the pin through, and the second cap flew out just like Dave warned. Found it. Futzing with the blades: I gently filed the inside of the top blade, and added a small dab of baby oil with a q-tip to the outside (the part that slides against the base metal). I wiped it all down really well with a napkin. I also found two channels on either side of the base where a protruding part on the top slides into when squeezing the punch. I placed the top back on, and gently pushed on the top to make sure the springs were positioned correctly to allow it to slide down and up. I think this was what had moved, and gently shifting the springs clockwise/counterclockwise helped correct the channels before reassembling. Getting the pin back in: Tough! I squeezed the top of the punch slightly to align the channel and plastic until I could see all the way through it, then got the first part of the pin in. I squeezed the other side of the top to keep the channel open to get the pin in a little further. I ended up locking the punch closed and continued to hold pressure on the top to keep the channel open while I gently tapped the pin into place with a tiny eyeglass screwdriver and a mini hammer. If it’s resisting, the channel isn’t open enough and you need to gently squeeze the top to keep it open while tapping.
This video is great. I'd bought a discontinued punch in ebay, and it arrived jammed. To get the first button off, I used the tiniest screwdriver in my computer tool set, and it took a little effort, but once it was off, the rest of the repair was fast and easy. Thank you very much for showing how to make the punch useful again.
WORKED FOR ME...THANK YOU.....I have a butterfly punch that was not aligning. Of course, I am way past my purchase point to return the item. I tried you method and it WORKED!!! At first, i didn't see anything wrong, so i decided to file all the sharp edges with an emery board. What ever was making my punch stick, it no longer does, thanks to you and this video. So if you still read your messages, I truly appreciate you making this video. Take care
I am very thankful to you for this tutorial! My new punch was broken and I almost said goodbye to it. But then I found your wonderful video and repaired the punch by myself. Thanks a lot!
thank you so much for your tutorial on how to repair punches, i bought mine a month ago and punched 3 circles and trying to use it again all of a sudden it was stuck so i followed all your tips (it did take me a while to take off the caps, very difficult) greased it, but after 40 minutes battling with the punch all turned out just fine. Great tutorial.
I just watched both of the punch repair videos & I am so glad I did. This is very helpful. I've had punches goof up on me in the past & couldn't figure out how to fix them. Now I know. Thank you so much! You did a great job of explaining what to do.
This video was so helpful thank you. Bought a punch 2 years ago and opened it today for the first time. Punch came damaged. Punch is discontinued almost threw it away today. Thank you!!!!!
I had an awful time getting the plug out...I just used my pick and dug and dug till I got it out...then follow your instruction got it working...but now one of them is cutting badly..thank you so much for making this video...I appreciate it...
THANKYOU!!!!! I was so distraught when my favorite punch stopped working! This fixed it right away! Also, thanks for the extra tip on lubricating it! I never felt like the wax paper worked! (In fact, I think that's what jammed mine in the first place!)
Robin Spitzer Hi Robin, Dave here... Thanks for your kind comment! It's always nice to know when something that I've done helps someone out. I'm glad this worked for you. Now I have a question for you... May we have your permission to share your comment on Anne's blog the next time we feature this video? Thanks! Dave
Great video with clear instructions! Silly me - I tried to punch felt. Yup, it jammed up and just ripped apart when I tried to pull it out. I tried all the "tricks," but nothing worked. Then, I came across this video. Worked like a charm! As warned, the cap did fly across the room. Next time, I'll do this in a smaller room . . . :)
Sir, you are a LEGEND..I was in such despair cos my fave punch just broke but its all fixed..some minor damage from being "out of alignment" but otherwise all good. Many thanks!
Two of my punches are stuck; they're not cheap so I hate the thought that they're useless. Thanks so much for this video. I'm going to try to fix them by following your steps.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! Just used it to repair a punch instead of returning it. It's a retired punch so I didn't want to loose it :-> THank You Thank YOu Thank YOU!!!
Mine works now! First the ook, than When put together a few punches through wax paper, and finally a few punches through copy paper and then it went smooth. Thank you!
My paper punch was not working properly. I took it apart just the you said , yes the plastic plug flew off. 😂All it needed was some oil. Thank you for this video!
Dave, Wonderful video's on how to repair your punches. Yes this helpful. I have a Marvy punch that punches only thin paper and on thicker paper only parts of the paper is punching What to do? I have other companies punches that stick also. Can you do a video on how to repair other companies punches also?
Thanks for the fine video - was able to repair one punch, but I think the other punch got dropped and knocked it out of alignment. With the cover off, I can get it to depress totally, but not with the cover on.
Thanks a lot!!! :-) I am so glad I found your video. It took a lot time for the pin to come out then to repair. I tried punching a ribbon and it got stuck. We can all learn from one another what not to punch!! Can you all add on to the things that you punched and failed?
I just tried this on a punch that punches multiple things at one time. It was giving me a lot of trouble sticking. It's like I have a new stamp. Thanks so much!
I have a Decorative Label Punch #120907. I am able to punch with it, however notice that the points in the middle (top and bottom) do not punch completely out. I have done the foil thing, even the tin can thing and the wax paper thing, still, it punches the same. Do you know how to fix this?
Hello Very helpful vidéos, Thank you My punch is a martha stewart all over the page punch... I am responsible for trying To punch too many layers at once... do you know how to open it up ?! Please help me...
Hi, i have a punch with tree position, and a dont know, how fix it, Seen this vídeo I could opened, but I did'nt do nothing. Would you like please do another vídeo with this kind of punch ¿
Took my Creative Memories Paisley punch apart. It was filled with layers of paper that had become stuck. I think sticky paper was used. It was much easier than I thought. Was wondering if anyone else had done this! LOL
does this work with the same style punches but ones that punch inside a punch. I have the gear punch and its not cutting the full length around the exterior of the gear shape, and it sticks.
I tried this on a newer EK success punch and I couldn't even get past step one. I just ended up chewing up the plug and couldn't get it out. It seems like this plug is glued.
I never thought of it! But I did succeed in the end, albeit I did put a few scratches around the pin. I'm a bit disappointed with punches that open up while in storage (because of change of temperature, I assume) and then you can't close them again unless you pull them apart. Thanks for your help.
SO glad you got it!! Another tip...make sure when you engage the locking mechanism that you push it in straight! I've had trouble when I (or my happy , fun-loving customers--ha!) get carried away and push it in at an angle. My husband showed me why and when you see the inside of the punch it makes sense!! :-)
I cannot get the cap off no matter what I try (metal nail file tip, small screwdriver head, nailhead); I am scratching the plastic and that's about it. I wish he didn't stop the video to take the cap off!! Does anyone have a tip other than the Cricut tool? I don't have that. Thanks in advance!
I used a pick from my Cricut tools and popped it out...hope this helps...I did have the same problem...he really didn't show how to get the first out...but he got my punch to working...
@@GWest5068 Thank you so much for this! This comment was as helpful, if not more, than the video. It took me two days to get the first cap off!!! Between this video and another one showing you can put the punch in the freezer to make the metal contract to free whatever material is "stuck", I was able to save my discontinued ribbon punch that I use all the time. So happy right now! I have a swap due this week and really wanted to use that punch. :) Another tip: Take photos at each stage of taking the punch apart. That way you have a good reference when putting it back together.

Can you do a video on fixing a triple punch by stampin up. Mine is not stuck but the metal part won't go up by itself anymore.
I just tried this on a punch that punches multiple things at one time. It was giving me a lot of trouble sticking. It's like I have a new stamp. Thanks so much!
Debbiemag Debbie, glad it was helpful!
Can you punch through some fine sandpaper to help sharpen the punches too? Or only use aluminum foil?
Jeannine so glad to hear this helped!
So glad this helped! 💜
Thanks Dave!! You're the best!!
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for a great video tutorial. I now have a mosaic punch that works.
Thanks very much Dave for both of these very informative videos. Will keep in mind for future reference! =)
Have you ever done the triple layer stampin up pumches?
I have a Decorative Label Punch #120907. I am able to punch with it, however notice that the points in the middle (top and bottom) do not punch completely out.
I have done the foil thing, even the tin can thing and the wax paper thing, still, it punches the same.

I left some SU crafting punches in a cold room where it’s visible they have Mildew, can these be cleaned?
Hello
Very helpful vidéos, Thank you
My punch is a martha stewart all over the page punch... I am responsible for trying To punch too many layers at once... do you know how to open it up ?! Please help me...
I wonder if Stampin UP has made this harder to do. I can't get the plugs outs. I can't find an edge fine enough/strong enough to pull out the plugs =(
Thank you for sharing!
I'm so glad you found this helpful!! We have lots of other good info on my blog @stampmaven.com!
Very helpful! Thanks!
Thank you so much! Guess what - these punches will not work with fabric! but now I have cleared it out and it punches paper like a champ.

OH NO! We've had others comment that Dave's technique worked with other EK punches. Maybe they have started glueing them...:-(
Very clear instructions, however I'm giving up trying to get the pin out! Impossible with pin, knife, and other tools. No luck.
Anita Christian I wonder if you put a little WD 40 and then tried? Have you had punch awhile?
