This episode had someone making a video game based on 1984 getting a question wrong related to 1984, and someone writing a book about covid vaccines getting a question wrong about mRNA vaccines!...

Man, Southampton was really taking their time on the bonuses - I feel like Churchill had a chance to advance if they went up against a faster team. They missed easy starters though so can't be too upset
Good game, if not the most exciting! Lots of bonus questions missed. Well done to both teams and congrats to Churchill. Thanks for this and wishing CP and all UC fans a very Happy and healthy New Year 🎉😊

Highest aggregate score for this Christmas series, perhaps? Good match. Two of the more handier teams negating each others appearance in the semis. As ever, thank you CP!
I just watched some of last year’s Christmas series and two missing things stood out… why did they get rid of the University throwback photos and isn’t this the first time they’ve reused the Christmas decor? I used to love watching to see what they came up with but maybe my memory’s struggling and they did repeat in the past? But especially the photos… that was always one of the endearing things about the Christmas series!
You actually spent a part of your life looking at last year's Christmas series and then felt it warranted a comparison, even down to what you refer to as the 'decor'? Well, bless you for taking the time, and a happy new year to you.
@ is that not…. What we’re here for? I’ve watched most of the seasons since it started to be shared on RUclips but missed last year’s because I couldn’t deal with it not being Paxo. But the bullet this year, came back, realised I actually love the new host and have played catch up on all of season 23 but just hadn’t seen the Christmas series yet.
@@carlywood336 ....Thank you for taking the time to reply. It must have indeed be a state of grief to miss Paxo but then to be rewarded to find a new love in Amol. Listen, it's New Year's Eve even as I write. I sincerely hope you are now fully in recovery and will enjoy future episodes of UC as much as I do. Robert.
rarely do I get mad at bad answers on here but "william burroughs" in response to who wrote billy budd and a novel about the pequod is absolutely insane
@@haoleboi5557 And not knowing The Mayor of Casterbridge, or Werner Herzog, or recognising Garbo and Dietrich (and Crawford and Davies for that matter). Their lack of cultural knowledge, high or low art, is shocking.
A BA in English at Southampton University 2007 focuses more on modern politics than on reading literature in English. Their modules as of now are: literature and the environment; queer theory and fiction; experimental performance poetry; Arthurian legends across media; Contemporary women's fiction; Creative Writing; Writing the Holocaust. (William Burroughs has, of course, been compartmentalized as belonging to queer fiction.)
I miss the earlier shows where they showed photos of the participants as students. Fascinating. Almost invariably the men were better looking in their youth, while the women improved as they aged!
They missed Joan Crawford and Bette Davis from such a famous movie after calling someone else Joan Crawford. “Mayor of Casterbridge” is the most famous book of Hardy. Still good teams, guess sometimes you miss the obvious!
Here we go, as always someone somewhere is shouting an answer... here: Neruda (only because I'm chilean), Spark Plug and Piston (Thank you, Mechanic Simulator 2021), EASTER ISLAND (again, I'm chilean), Greta Garbo (For heaven's sake, WHY do I know that??? xD), and NINE!!! (Even I have a 1855 book of Dante's Divine Comedy and it still survives). =)
I had the same reaction to correctly identifying Greta Garbo. Guess her face is registered to my database for some reason! Can’t believe they didn’t guess Dietrich based on the word ‘cabaret’ in her question alone.
Tonight featuring a Covid vaccine developer who doesn’t know the answer mRNA and looks like she found her courage the Dutch way. First time ever a contestant made me want to puke, and I’ve watch pretty much every episode for more than a decade.
If you're ever getting impostor syndrome, watch these videos to realise just how dumb ostensibly successful/smart people actually are edit: this was not meant to be serious + being in a very stressful situation makes you lose a ton of IQ points lol
I disagree with the general premise even though this episode has some good examples of inept answers. Timed quizzing is not a good test on how "smart" someone is, it's not even a good test of general knowledge. I say this as a "pro" quizzer and puzzle maker. Running quizzes for people with no experience in answering questions of a given type, I find that even professional knowledge sometimes fails them under pressure. In real situations when they need this knowledge in context, they are fully capable of retrieving and using it. (Also note how the historian here aced the history topics.)
Yes, I've won 5 different quiz shows against people mostly smarter than me! You have to factor in nerves, speed on the button and the luck of the questions suiting you.
@@talisa222 the constant barking about “No conferring!” and the dull editorializing about “you should know that” or “it’s delicious.” He’s ruined the show for me. Yes, Paxman did it too but not nearly as often.

The latter was an absolute shocker. And those are the ones whom we trust with our lives?!
Thanks, CP. I was brilliant tonight.🤣🤣 The most important part of getting the right answers, is being given the right questions.

Couldn't help but snicker at Robinson's reaction to schlittenfahrt.
He also smirked when the captain incorrectly said “Suck” in response to the mechanics question.

The choice of GRADUATION as the kangaroo word was clever because it contains all the letters to both Tundra and Taiga!

Well, being too specific is probably a saving grace.
