It all depends on what you want and can imagine with your shots. I have and have used a ping Rapture 3W and currently bag a G400 Stretch 3W set at 12 deg, basically a 2W. I use the stretch off the tee on tighter par 4s and have no trouble hitting it off the deck when on the fairway/ light first cut rough. The I mostly grip down the shaft an inch when hitting off the deck. I carry a G30 5W set at 17 deg which I use from heavier rough. The mini driver looks like a very versatile club, might have to give a demo s try.
Great video James. As someone who drives with an RBZ stage 2 3w (and still outdrives many other golfers), would you recommend an upgrade to the Original One for driving?
I've replaced my driver, with the mini driver. I've gone from an 18 handicap, to a 12. Its been the greatest single change to my game, ever. 285 yards straight everytime.
I know this video came out a while ago, but it helped me tremendously. I hit my Threewood extremely well and I can’t hit a driver because of the length of the shaft. Mini driver is definitely going in the bag as a replacement for my driver.
what do you think about gaming a Driver, a 13.5 Mini Driver (for shorter / tighter Par 5s as well as long par 5 entry) and a 4 wood (16.5) for fairway shots where 230-240 is the entry number?
This is an older review but I like it. I have been curious about the mini driver James. Thanks for this my friend. Fortunately I hit my Ping G410 3 Wood like a rocket so I don't need a driver or mini driver. I carry a complete set of woods James. 3,5, 7 and 9. I love Woods. Joe
Defiantly considering replacing my driver with this. I'm so inconsistent with my driver that I don't use it anymore I only hit 3 wood off the tee. If it gets me a bit more distance then my 3 wood and doesn't put me on a different fairway or 2 then the one I'm playing like my driver does it'll go in my bag
I find it so funny that 270cc is called the Mini Driver when a decade or so ago 300cc was the standard for Drivers. I have an old Taylormade 300 Ti 8.5* that I use for worm burners when it's windy at one of my local courses and it always hits like a beast and runs like a gazelle. :) Great video, Cheers!
I love the on field review. Its what we really want to see anyway. Real world usage. Great Video. I like the mini as a driver for walking smaller courses. Its a nice old school minimalist design, and if u throw a 5 or a 7 wood in the walking bag instead of a 3 wood, itll be a nice add on to a bag thats intended for simple old school golf. However .... if youre playing long bombing courses then stay with today's standards. It has a place, but not for real young competition. I really see it as a niche, golf walker, weekend getaway golfer type .
I like the idea of the mini driver being used as a 3 wood alternative. I currently have a gap between the driver at 9.5 degrees and 4 hybrid at 16.5. I kind of need something around the 13 degree area. I've been looking at 3 woods that are adjustable down to that range, but then this stick came along. AAaarrrgh!!! Thanks James, appreciate you doing this video, mate......now back to window shopping golf clubs!
Replying to this comment 4 yrs. after the fact, but that's exactly the setup I have. Driver, mini D, 5 wood set as a 4 wood (16.5*), and an 18* utility/Driving Iron. I'm more of a course management style player and like to have lots of options off the tee. More fairways equals lower scores.
When struggling with driver - I've carried in the bag a Cobra F6 9.5 degree full length driver, a TM SLDR 12 degree mini, and a Cobra strong 13 degree 3 wood. It's nice to have choices when standing the tee box. Although the lob wedge may be out of the bag...
As a high handicapper who struggles with the driver, I'm considering a mini-driver as a driver replacement. The shorter shaft and higher loft are appealing. And if I could learn to hit it off the deck, that'd be a bonus. I don't carry a 3 wood, I use a 4 wood instead.
Def considering it in place of driver. I’ve always felt more confident with smaller headed 3 wood off the tee, oversize driver head. For me, I’m all about confidence in the club.
I just picked up a used mini driver off of eBay and am going to play it off the tee on executive par 4s in place of my 2017 M1 driver. I'll bag the M1 driver on full 18 holes for par 5s and see how it compares this season. I need the accuracy more than I need the distance.
Would have been more interesting if you had lofted up the mini driver which I believe can go up to 15.5 degrees!!! I have the Aeroburner mini driver 14 and 16 degrees..... Always preferred the 16 degrees especially off the deck.... Interesting video though!! Thanks!!
I'm using the Callaway mini driver, it's about 15 yards less than a well struck driver but it's very consistent. I wouldn't use it from the fairway very often though!
I think shortening a driver shaft - to 43-44" - and a slightly smaller but not mini head - something in the 325-350 cc range - would be a more likely sweet spot. I have a 400 cc driver I used to hit pretty well but has a stiff shaft, not good for me anymore. I'd love to put it in an R or senior shaft.
That's interesting James...positive swing thoughts with the 3 wood and negative swing thoughts with the mini driver. I wonder which you are going to strike better....caught me looking at the mini driver again. Any chance you would revue it again since Phil has one in his bag now. Doesn't cobra have a larger 3 wood now?
You must remember who will benefit from the mini driver. I am a senior golfer with a mini AeroBurner 14 degree and it is the best. I have slow swing speed and use it as a driver and goes straight and gives me distance. I do not use it off the deck. I use a big Bertha 4 wood or a rescue. Seniors should try this club.
Had to use a old big bertha 11' driver 4 got mine on day it went OK tbh was surprised as head small. Is the mini driver similar to the old bertha. Hate my current 3 wood use my hybrids instead more forgiving. Look 4 ward to mid handicap testing as like the idea of mini driver then mini driver could create more par opportunities for me. I'm high handicap currently working on that issue but do you have a high handicap tester be good to see it used with a person with a swing not as good as yours it looked decent to me and I understand windy courses I'm just down road from u practically.
I switch between my driver and mini driver. I can't draw my driver but i can shape my mini driver pretty well and 3 wood so I put it in play on new courses or tight courses. I hit my mini aero driver about 280 on average. Also i wonder if it would make a difference if you had the 11.5° version?
I wonder how the weights of the heads compare. A while ago, Boccierri Golf put out a short driver with a heavier head. I got it and it's in my bag because the shorter shaft lets me get the ball in the middle of the face a little more (I'm a high handicapper). It sounds like the idea here is the same; the shorter shaft might make it easier to square up, but the smaller head might actually make that not as helpful on the mini driver. If you can get your hands on a Short Driver by Boccieri, I'd be curious to see a side by side there!
Really considering mini driver as a driver replacement; thinking clubhead speed and more consistent striking with the mini driver can outperform current driver ... glad to hear your thoughts
Thanks for your reviews JR!! Always appreciate your content, but I have searched all of RUclips and no one has done a head to head on the M4 vs M6 3 wood... Are you able perform this as I know it would greatly help many curious players
How the club looks at address really effects the swing. For me the 3 wood looks like it can do the job so the swing tempo and sequence is correct . Uncertainty leads to rushed swing kinetics and ‘helping’ arm club unit action. Even really noticeable in your well honed swing. Thanks
Looked like the shaft length was about identical with the 3-wood shaft and the mini. Just wondering if you can get the mini in a higher loft to be more like the 3-wood to see how they compare.
Looking forward to your video of driver vs mini driver. The mini beat the 3w easily off the tee in this video, as it should do, so will the driver do the same or will the mini be the dispersion king.....?
I'm definitely not skilled enough to consider hitting the MD off the deck and it doesn't seem like it's designed for off the deck anyway. If I was concerned about my driver control, I think I would consider a shorter driver shaft before a MD. Good comparison James.
Please adjust the loft on the mini to 15 and redo the test please. I was thinking of purchasing this as a 3 wood replacement for the anti left properties. (I cant fade any of my 3 woods). If the distance wouldn't be too much with the mini at 15 degress i think this would be a perfect club for me.
James, i struggle with my driver and, until i ll have more time to practice it, i m looking for a substitute. Would you suggest this mini driver or a rocket wood 13.5? I was reading that the callaway subzero is done to maximise distance from the tee with a very low spin and maybe it would be easier to use off the deck. what do you think?
I love my mini-Taylormade Slider. But like you, off the deck is very variable. I use it in place of a 3w but off the T. I wish they would make a mini again with all the new crap Callaway, Cobra and Taylormade add to the face. Hey, that would be great, aye?
I had the old one and I found it best for courses that were very tight as a driver replacement I would the original ones head was too big for my eye to hit it consistently off the turf
Great comparison James. It would be interesting to see how the mini driver compared against m6 driver at a slower swing speed, and also what happens when you lower the loft.
Think the mini driver is aimed at a replacement for people who are struggling with the driver not a replacement 3 wood. Years ago a had a tour 3 wood 13 degrees as I couldn't hit a driver, was a great concept
My 3 wood is a Callaway epic with adjustable loft settings. So I wouldn't use the mini driver at all but I could see a high handicapper or a beginner using it.
I really wanted to test the mini driver last year when I went to get fitted for a driver. They didn't have one to test and ended up with a F9 that I don't even put in the bag anymore I dislike it that much 😫. Thinking of selling the f9 driver and just go get fitted for a 3wood
Yes! Keep looking at this club! I genuinely wonder if I can swing it faster than a full length driver because of the “feeling of confidence/control” the shorter shaft gives... I really want to compare it to my driver and 3W... I’ll be interested in seeing the difference in distance between the mini and ur regular driver on the course, taking into account dispersion etc
Either that or I’ll buy a shorter shaft and have both options. Still want to hit the TM one tho... lol. But can’t see it being any better than my g400max which I do love
For huge percentages of certain types of golfers (older slower swinging, shorter slower swinging, young teens, etc) this 43" 13 degree head driver is basically a perfect driver as it is properly swing weighted for it's club length and has a much bigger head than any 3wood thus making it a perfect tee club. 3/4qtrs of the people that go to the range I go to should buy this club and throw out their current 45" 9 degree lofted drivers
I didn't even know that Minnie Driver played Golf, you learn something every day LOL Not for me, I can't even use a 3 wood the Mini Driver would just get me deep in the shite!!!!
Tried the SLDR mini driver and found no real reason for it. It was no easier to hit than a normal driver and not as versatile as a 3wood so still a pointless club. I just don't see who it suits 🤔
I hit my 3w once every 4 or 5 rounds because I own an SLDR mini driver. I don't carry a full size driver anymore. My SLDR goes 250-265 all day long, with the occasional romp out to 285+ but more importantly it goes straight and my misses aren't as bad as they were with a standard driver. So for me, I will be picking one of these up as soon as I have some extra cash laying around.
I love your videos including this one i could never afford the pastiest and greatest I’m a college student but it breaks my heart when you slam the brand new clubs around
Driver 8° - SS: 108-113mph - Carry 262-284yards 3wd 14.5° - SS: 105-110mph - 230-262yards Carry 5wd 18.5° - SS: 104-109mph - 225-245yrds Carry. Which I believe is plenty of distance to be attacking onto a green, anything more than 220yards and the risk reward ratio from those distances is not worth it. So really have no point for the distance 3wd gives me and since i use it on tight part 4's off a tee, might as well maximise distance.. Just got a mini driver and lofted it down to 10° Basically looking to replace the 3wood so i can use the mini driver on tight part 4's off a tee when the length of driver or driver in general is not working that day for me, But i still want maintain as much distance as possible that my driver gives me but just a tiny bit more control.
I think for people that want more distance out of their 3 wood the mini will be to unforgiving off the deck. Might be better than a driver off the tee for some.
A great comparison test but I still can’t see the point of one, if you are struggling with the driver then instead of buying the mini driver go and get fitted for a shorter driver shaft
I personally think the mini driver would be perfect for a beginner. Someone who is not use to the driver or who does not have the skill to hit a 3w. Big headed 3w with distance and forgiveness. I am sure there are a TON, or for you James, TONNE, of ways to agree or disagree with my statement. However, that is who I think would benefit more from the mini driver.
No offence James but this wasn't a great test in my mind.... Your playing it off the deck like a 3wood but judging it as a driver..... It's just not a good comparison. If this were the case you would be testing you m5 off the deck. Again no offence I just don't think it's a good comparison
He did a full video review with it as a driver and wondered if (given its tweener size and loft) it could be a 3-wood replacement. Fair question. And I think we have a clear answer :)
I'm a bit different to most in that I feel more confident looking down at a smaller club head. The mini driver appeals to me as a driver replacement but no way in hell would I attempt it off the deck.
The only time I see the benefit of a mini driver is perhaps a bit more ability to control on a tight course. Phil Mickleson made great use a few years back when he was on links courses. He is obviously a lot longer than us mere mortals so could drop his driver from the bag in such circumstances.
Why not tee up the mini driver to a proper height? I understand the fairway shots since the MD is supposed to be a wood replacement. But I would think most people would do tee shots with an appropriate height.
Love the feel of the mini. I'm a lot more comfortable hitting that as opposed to a 440cc or 460cc driver.
Still getting on with this? I've finally taken my driver out of my bag in favor of a 3 wood as a mull over it's replacement.
I know this video came out a while ago, but it helped me tremendously. I hit my Threewood extremely well and I can’t hit a driver because of the length of the shaft. Mini driver is definitely going in the bag as a replacement for my driver.
Awesome Cameron!

Just ordered my mini driver!! Thank you for the video!!
Yes great start to my day, great vlog and great review on both mini driver and the 3 wood, still can't go wrong with an original ⛳🔥👌🏾
i get my mini driver out when im loosing my driver swing...its an awesome fixer!
Hi James, interesting ! Why not compare it against the M6 Rocket 3 with 14˚ loft ? seems more honest comparison, loft-wise.
My 2 favorite 3 woods ever are larger in size 200cc area.
Tour Edge XCG7 Beta
Ping g400 stretch
Both rockets and forgiving
Hi JamesI know this is not what the video was focused on, but that Mizuno stand bag is really really nice 😀👍
I feel like it’s to replace three wood and driver so you can have an extra iron or wedge.
Joe

The OO is awesome. I don't carry a driver or a 3w. This is long enough and I use a 17° hybrid for fairway duties. Love it.
I love the on field review. Its what we really want to see anyway. Real world usage. Great Video. I like the mini as a driver for walking smaller courses. Want to see the mid handicap test. I think it could be a great option. Could go driver, mini driver, and a 5 wood to fit some gaps.
Is it not a rebranded 2-wood?
When struggling with driver - I've carried in the bag a Cobra F6 9.5 degree full length driver, a TM SLDR 12 degree mini, and a Cobra strong 13 degree 3 wood. It's nice to have choices when standing the tee box. Although the lob wedge may be out of the bag...

Would have been interesting to see them set at the same loft if that is possible? If so then maybe mini driver offers more options?
Simon Hobbs sane here. I had the sldr version.
Plz compare the strong flash SZ 3w to this and also the lower lofted mini turned down to 10* with a 10* driver head.
Would have been more interesting if you had lofted up the mini driver which I believe can go up to 15.5 degrees!!! I have the Aeroburner mini driver 14 and 16 degrees..... Always preferred the 16 degrees especially off the deck.... Interesting video though!! Thanks!!
Always was a 3 wood replacement too...... Then again I am useless with a large driver.... Hehehehe!!!
You hit it sweet as a nut when we played Kim! I agree though I’d like to see you with a reg
Taylormade should go back to all black carbon crown. Like the mini driver. Looking awesome.
James could you do a vlog with the M5 And the M5 tour if possible so I can get an idea before I buy a full taylormade setup please
That's interesting James...positive swing thoughts with the 3 wood and negative swing thoughts with the mini driver. I wonder which you are going to strike better....caught me looking at the mini driver again. Any chance you would revue it again since Phil has one in his bag now.
James please do a head to head for all the previous generations of mini drivers against the latest BRNR mini driver.
I wonder how the weights of the heads compare. A while ago, Boccierri Golf put out a short driver with a heavier head. Compare to sldr mini driver aeroburner mini? Also can you take the 50g sole plate out and hit it and compare to the numbers with it in
Thanks for your reviews JR!!

Can you do normal driver vs mini driver?
Filmed today. Uploaded for tomorrow :)
I had the old one and I found it best for courses that were very tight as a driver replacement I would the original ones head was too big for my eye to hit it consistently off the turf
Played my first full 18 holes with my new M6 3 Rocket 13˚. Few misses, but still longer than my my M4 driver by 20-30 meters 🤔
3 wood seems the go. More accurate and the extra distance we could get from an actual driver
I need that club in my bag !!! Great vid as usual
Maybe you could check it on a par 5 against a driver and a 3 wood. So you use the mini driver twice, once off the tee once off the deck.
I do struggle with my driver... I'm thinking about mini driver off the tee and 3 wood off the deck... am I crazy?
Would be interesting to see this one vs the old sldr. Mainly to see advances in design and for those using old sldr looking to upgrade
James let's do it now
My 3 wood is a Callaway epic with adjustable loft settings.
Would have liked to see a Mini driver comparison with a normal driver. Maybe incorporate a high handcap golfer into the video as well.
Will take a look Fergus... keep an eye out for my video tomorrow’... 😉
Im considering getting the mini driver instead of calllawau xr driver and 3 wood
a 13.5 degree 3 wood would be tougher to hit off the deck than a 15 degree. Would have been nice to set the same lofts and see what happened
I'd say it's more a question of is it a driver replacement not a 3 wood replacement. Look forward to seeing it up against your driver!
Aaron Stanyer the question he is trying to answer is do you get this or just use your 3 wood.
Tempted
Fergus Reeve I cut mine an inch last year. The loss in swing speed, if any, is back gained by center strike
Either that or I’ll buy a shorter shaft and have both options.
Still want to hit the TM one tho... lol. But can’t see it being any better than my g400max which I do love
Fergus Reeve I have M6. I feel the same. I heard the 400 max is good
For huge percentages of certain types of golfers (older slower swinging, shorter slower swinging, young teens, etc) this 43" 13 degree head driver is basically a perfect driver as it is properly swing weighted for it's club length and has a much bigger head than any 3wood thus making it a perfect tee club. 3/4qtrs of the people that go to the range I go to should buy this club and throw out their current 45" 9 degree lofted drivers
I didn't even know that Minnie Driver played Golf, you learn something every day LOL
Not for me, I can't even use a 3 wood the Mini Driver would just get me deep in the shite!!!!
James, should we not be using a tee when possible?! Mini vs. TM Rocket?
Why not put the loft on mini driver to match the 3 wood then test?
How about a test between the Mini and the M6 driver? Both on tees!! Cheers. I used the SLDR mini a lot. It was easy to hit off the deck.
Tried the SLDR mini driver and found no real reason for it. It was no easier to hit than a normal driver and not as versatile as a 3wood so still a pointless club. I just don't see who it suits 🤔
Someone who prefers it to a 3W
I hit my 3w once every 4 or 5 rounds because I own an SLDR mini driver. I don't carry a full size driver anymore. So for me, I will be picking one of these up as soon as I have some extra cash laying around.
Ummmm a bunch of people 🤷♂️ jeez la weez
I love your videos including this one i could never afford the pastiest and greatest I’m a college student but it breaks my heart when you slam the brand new clubs around

Going back to the old day's!....it's a 2 wood!
Same shaft Callaway Mini 1.5 vs this Mini driver I would like to see the results. Mini 1.5 on E bay a little over 100 dollars.
I do hit the Mini 1.5 off the ground it looks shallower than the new one.
Awesome video James!
Driver 8° - SS: 108-113mph - Carry 262-284yards
3wd 14.5° - SS: 105-110mph - 230-262yards Carry
5wd 18.5° - SS: 104-109mph - 225-245yrds Carry.
Which I believe is plenty of distance to be attacking onto a green, anything more than 220yards and the risk reward ratio from those distances is not worth it. So really have no point for the distance 3wd gives me and since i use it on tight part 4's off a tee, might as well maximise distance..
Just got a mini driver and lofted it down to 10°
Basically looking to replace the 3wood so i can use the mini driver on tight part 4's off a tee when the length of driver or driver in general is not working that day for me, But i still want maintain as much distance as possible that my driver gives me but just a tiny bit more control.
I think for people that want more distance out of their 3 wood the mini will be to unforgiving off the deck. Might be better than a driver off the tee for some.
Driver? Looking to drop my 3 wood and go to a 5 wood for more consistency and similar distance...
Think I might find a place in the bag for this. Have always hit my 3 wood better than driver.
Very true but that was done afterwards... Either way pretty cool club... I may look into one
How about a mini driver vs ping stretch 3 wood comparison.....
I need another option of the tee so will give a try!
I use a mini sldr. Love it.
I'm a bit different to most in that I feel more confident looking down at a smaller club head. The mini driver appeals to me as a driver replacement but no way in hell would I attempt it off the deck.
Such a shame that we can't get the 11.5° over here in Europe. Loft it down to 10° and you'd a modern version of a 975D-era driver.
The only time I see the benefit of a mini driver is perhaps a bit more ability to control on a tight course. Phil Mickleson made great use a few years back when he was on links courses. He is obviously a lot longer than us mere mortals so could drop his driver from the bag in such circumstances.
What's the point of using a 13 degree? You should used the 11 degree and see where it stands vs driver and 3 wood
Why not tee up the mini driver to a proper height? I understand the fairway shots since the MD is supposed to be a wood replacement. But I would think most people would do tee shots with an appropriate height.
James its let's get ready to rumble
I’d like to see it up against a Callaway Steelhead III driver if there’s still one about 👍🏻
I think I would stick to the M6 Driver and M6 3 Wood. I have no purpose for the Mini Driver
Id probably have both in bag ....i cant hit a 3 wood off a tee when i want to but can off the deck so both might be an option
Would it be wrong to call these mini drivers 2-woods?
No
can't say 2 wood these days then :-)
The mini driver has a much bigger head. About 275 cc I believe
Got a friend who uses PING Rapture 3 wood 13 degree as driver and 17.5 Cobra fairway
I am getting the original one.
surely be better to compare rocket 3 to mini driver? lofts closer together then
