This is sad. I know what the woman means, Irish people went through something similar when the British came and claimed our country as their own and forced us to speak their language and we weren't aloud to speak Irish.
Eventually we got most of our land back but not all of it, they even burnt down innocent people's homes when we tried to get it back.

Basically the only time when the natives were treated poorly is when Russia owned the Alaska territory yes in 1918 a lot of white settlers children and native children were forced by their community and the gov into boarding schools when the Spanish Flu Pandemic swept through in the late 1910s a lot of culture was lost but not because of violence because children were forced to go to school 🏫 during a very dangerous pandemic you got to remember that 100 YRs ago medicine was not nearly as advanced as today!

Third: Russia never owned us so could never sell us (if it is legal I will sell you all of Europe for a measly $1,000,000! :p )

I completely agree. Because of that deal Alaska Natives are facing genocide even in the 21st century! They have no land and no free college and post-graduate education, that's outrageous! In the USSR and Russia it would have never happened.
I travel to different regions of Russia, and everywhere I see that best school students of all ethnical groups study at the uni free of charge, and even in the most remote villages indigenous people have their own farms, good schools, premises for traditional wrestling, etc. Yes, we're not rich, but we cope somehow, we help each other. And everybody studies their native language as one of school subjects and speaks it at home.

This is a well-deserved lawsuit that Alaska Native communities could slam onto the Federal Government. Oil has provided everything for Alaska but threatens the ecosystem heavily. Climate change hits Alaska at double the rate of the lower 48, and people there rely on an ecosystem developed over millions of years. Are you an Alaska native? Find a lawyer and sue the Federal Government in a class action. You heard the lady, they taught you English after you 'agreed' to the organization-region split. Illegal, especially if the contract was written in English. This is upsetting. Thankfully Bristol Bay never went through.... Alaska, you got this.

Our Alaska native group was litigated against most of my life, with a judge finally saying our BIA status should be revoked because 4 natives and 4 whites isn’t majority and you have to have native majority to qualify. 2 of those whites were our legally bound family members. Father and husband, to native group members. Why did ANCSA punish biracial families, especially after the boarding school treatment? The people who started the litigation weren’t there in 1970 which ANCSA said you had to be on. Now we are not federally recognized, but all of our natives groups around us recognize us.

@@rudgullit1989Certainly. We shouldn't have sold it. Stlealing the land and being sent there as a prisoner, or hide from religious oppression are different things. Permafrost and harsh climate protect many lands from stealing even better than laws.
In Russia Native Peolpes of Siberia, Ural, the Extreme North, Caucasus, regions along River Volga, the Far East still live on their lands and do their traditional lifestyle - reindeer/sheep/camel herding, hunting, fishing, farming. Many of those who don't, have degrees and work in the city (or at farms as vets, engineers or agronomists), and all ethnic groups have free tuition at the uni if they study well at school. It may seem surprising for foreigners, but the absolute majority of native children study their language at school. There are news programmes, TV shows, newspapers, films and modern songs in many of indigenous languages. Neither the Russian Empire, nor Soviet Russia, nor the Russian Federation forbade cultures and languages.
The US and Canada failed to even organize regular language classes in Native American languages at school.

Because of PFD, literally everyone has benefited from oil wealth. If you are from a North slope corporation, you are set for life. The boarding schools were horrific. Many children we're sexually abused by missionaries and passed that down through their families. This is why there is a high sexual assault rate among Alaska natives. Now, each village has a school paid for by the state.

Silas Bishop I highly doubt the boarding schools are the reason for all the sexual assaults. Colonization and assimilation can definitely be tragic... not just because of whites, but from other races as well. I don't think it's fair to just blame whites (especially ones living today) for racism that goes on today (and in the past). I believe the reason why Europeans have perhaps been the most successful among races in creating colonies and invading other indigenous people's lands was because of three major factors: their abundant natural resources, the location of their homeland, and even their climate. If people of a different region where the ones with the better advantages, then I have no doubt that they would also take advantage of their success. At first, the most successful were ones that inhabited the Middle East, Northeastern Africa, and Eastern Asia because the first known civilizations were established in these regions. I bet you anything that there were many instances of invasions and oppression from their parts, such as Egyptians forcing Israelites into slavery, or Huns invading Eastern Europe (the homeland of Slavic peoples), or Akkadians conquering the Sumerians and native people of Anatolia. Now don't get me wrong, I believe the European arrival in Alaska (as well as North America, or rather the Americas, as a whole) in many ways can be seen as immoral and oppression against the natives, but there are also benefits in their arrival (such as more effective tools, medicine, and in some cases helped them create their own writing system (using syllabics) for even better forms of communication. People should understand that this all took place in the past, and this type of colonization and racism has been very much diminished today. Prejudice against white people today (who were never personally involved with the actions that took place from the past) is going to solve nothing, if anything, it will only continue hostilities towards each other. This of course also goes for some white people, as they can also show signs of prejudice against other races...which obviously tends to be more popular (or hated), mostly thanks to mass media. Prejudice against ANY race is wrong and should be stopped, but in a more realistic approach, that will never happen. Why? Because we are all humans. We tend to be more similar than different from each other, specifically our mindsets. There will always be good and bad among the human race, and that's how it's always been for us.

Yes, forced colonization, forced assimilation and genocide carried out in the name of civilization is a tragic thing. We Native Americans don't blame anyone living now for what happened in the past but it's hard to overlook the prejudice and racism when it still occurs today and if you are the one happening to be experiencing it. I think we Natives, being human, tend to treat people as we are treated. The arrival of the invaders to our homeland brought us many things, including disease and a dying Mother Earth, but we had been living here for thousands of years so we pretty much had our groove on with our way of life. We had our own ways of communication, by the way, the Cherokees had a written language and by 1828 there were 2 newspapers in the language and literacy was close to 90%, much higher than the white American literacy rate. The Mayans also had written language along with the Aztec and Zapotec. Many modern medicines are based on the plants and herbs that were used by Natives for thousands of years. In fact more than 200 botanicals, derived originally from Native Americans, have been or are still in use by pharmaceuticals. Native Americans alone domesticated and actually genetically modified several of the most important foods crops in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. In 1987 the US Senate acknowledged that the Great Law of Peace of the Iroquois Nations served as a model for the US constitution. Native American accomplishments, contributions and discoveries are largely overlooked as we are a marginalized people.
