This is eye opening. I have always been under the impression that Speak of the Devil was recorded live over two nights, and using the Black Sabbath songs to fulfill Ozzy's contract. I knew Randy didn't like playing BS songs live, and if he hadn't died, would have been the guitarist for this. (Hearing RR's rendition of Iron Man/Children of the Grave on the Tribute album, I'm not sure what he had against playing BS songs, other than writing credits). I still think Speak of the Devil is great. Brad plays balls out. And his tone is incredible on this album.
Yes, this is an interesting video with good information. I remember reading an article in a rock magazine back then where Ozzy said he released the Sabbath material because he didn't want to do a disservice to Rhodes, as the material from the first two albums were largely written by him and he had recently passed away. Now it seems that isn't the case, as he was talking about doing the Sabbath songs WITH Randy Rhodes! Also, the timing of the release of Speak of the Devil being released around the same time Sabbath released their Live Evil 2 record set makes you wonder. As I remember, both bands were claiming that THEIR live album was superior to the other one.

Randy does do an amazing job with Paranoid in Milwaukee, Jan. 22, 1982. They say something went wrong with some of his equipment or pedal but you couldn't tell it! It's one of the best sounding live solos I've ever heard him do. It's on YT as "Paranoid Best Version" ...Simply amazing!!
@@backtoshallabal6662 Actually, the Black Sabbath material is MUCH easier to play than the songs from Ozzy's career with Randy Rhodes. He probably didn't want to play them because they were too EASY. Seriously, I've been in bands, and it's pretty common to hear musicians say something like "Come on, do we really have to play Paranoid... again??" Now, Over The Mountain... you gotta have some chops to pull THAT one off.
Randy was under contract with Ozzy for 5 records. Randy was desperate to get out of his contract, talked to another band member of how to possibly get out of by filing a lawsuit. He was sick and tired of Ozzy's bullshit and he was at the end of his rope.
Ozzy’s unprofessionalism & alcoholism. There were many shows canceled due to Ozzy’s habits & mental health. Ozzy would become belligerent and violent. Also, the fact it started as a “band” and quickly become an Ozzy solo project with Randy becoming a sideman.
@@AngelofAnguish probably Sharon running everything. They ditched Daisley & Kerslake after recording Diary for no apparent reason other than they weren't as popular in the US as Sarzo & Aldrirge.
@@AngelofAnguish I don't know all the details but Ozzy was drunk one night and hit Randy for some reason. Rudy Sarzo confirms this in an interview. Ozzy had a lot of problems/issues when drinking and I think he was afraid of Randy leaving the band because he had talked about going back to LA to study Classical Guitar at UCLA. He wanted to do that and go back to giving lessons at Musonia (his Mom's Music Studio) where he had taught guitar back during his Quiet Riot days.
That was an awesome release, the band had a great chemistry. Brad did an amazing job, loved he’s tone . Sucks you can’t purchase in the USA, have to go to Canada or Europe.
They exploited Randy on The tribute album and video for crazy train. I’m not sure if Randy’s family got proceeds or royalties, depends his contract with Ozzy? But being as Jake got negotiated out of royalties, Bob got screwed outta ton of them, and the band was supposed to be called “Blizzard of Oz” instead of Ozzy Osbourne. I mean if the shoe fits.
When Randy's brother and sister were in danger of losing the family's music school, the Osbournes remained quiet. With all their wealth they could've stepped in and at least helped out a bit, but they couldn't be bothered.
The more you hear about the inner workings of Ozzy's solo career, the less and less I like it. The first two records will always be classics. The biggest thanks goes to his band at the time. Randy, Bob and Lee. He certainly had great players after that, but I think those two records were the only time when they functioned as a band and not just a bunch of hired guns.
I believe in metal this situation was the origination point for the "hired gun". Ozzy(the brand, not the person)proved, that band was optional, it just a fact, the we can like or not, or whatever.
@@flyingvguy6833 Ahhh I do think the band matters. And, I think the proof is in the pudding. The first two Ozzy records are light years better than anything he ever did after. I do like some of the records after the first two, but none of them hold a candle to that those. And thanks go to Randy, Bob and Lee...
I wonder how much of tribute was recut with vocals. The Afterhours footage has had vocals recut.I’ve the original VHS and Crazy Train is one that they did because Ozzy voice just cracks in the chorus.
Regardless of all of the arguments about, it not being a real live album, is still my favorite live album. I just wish, there wasn’t so much shenanigans surrounding it. And I would love to see full length footage from those shows, if they still exist. So far all I have seen is the memoirs of a madman DVD footage, of fairies wear boots. The speak of the devil DVD we got, is not from these New York shows. It’s from the diary of a madman tour, after Randy’s death.
To be honest, Talk/Speak of the Devil is my favourite rendition of the Sabbath tunes live, they are certainly some of the heaviest. Brad did an amazing job given the time constraints. I do get the worship for Randy, but for me Jake was the best guitarist Ozzy had- especially live.
No way. Quit the hate, it's not worship for Randy. Randy has been gone for 40 years. He never got his chance to do more. Can't defend himself . Didn't get a full life to live like Jake which turned into a junkie. I I lived it, i saw EVH , Randy, Jake all front row. I met Jake on the bark tour. Jake was told to be a copy, he was a blues oriented guitarist that was told to play like Randy and couldn't. His best work was outside of Ozzy.
Agreed. Live on stage Jake was phenomenal; he looked _and_ sounded the part. It was almost as if it were too easy for him. And he played Randy's parts with more conviction than Randy himself.
@@MrClassicmetal "played Randy's parts with more conviction than Randy himself" Lol. No. I love Jake as a guitarist and I've seen him live...but it's laughable that he played Randy's parts with more conviction than Randy. As a matter of fact, I've always felt like Jake's renditions of Randy's songs were somewhat empty.
Brad gillis is absolutely brilliant on this record, as is rudy, tommy and ozzy. I love tribute but the mix on this record is fucking phenomenal. And randy is the reason i started playing. Sharon ...... lost for words
Speak of the Devil gets a lot of flack but it's the record that made me a Sabbath fan. I wasn't a fan of Paranoid or Iron Man but when I heard Brad Gillis playing N.I.B. and The Wizard, I was completely hooked. I still have the CD. In fact, it's in my CD player now in my car.
Because Ozzy doesn't like the record, which he really was forced to do by Sharon's father, Don Arden, and doesnt want it on there. Ozzy: "I don't give a f**k about that album. It's just a bunch of bullshit Sabbath covers."
Brad Gillis was great on Speak of the Devil so was Rudy and Tommy Aldridge that band was so tight I mean they played great together, it wasn't Randy but for what it was those guys played great.
Nope. Only the bootlegs you can now find on youtube of all these bands. Audio is better in some than others but you get a real sense of how they were night to night. Randy is consistent but sometimes a bit sloppier or less aggressive on the night. Always tight though. Great player.
My above statement was noting the disparity between Recorded date vs release date of Diary. Diary was recorded after the Blizzard Euro tour, mainly Great Britain. without going into all speculations...It was recorded before FW was heard by Randy Yet Diary was Released way after. So Fair Warning was renown for Edwards new styles of Vibrato..sounds not put down on his 3 previous albums. So people, especially EVH Fanboys were talking shiite that Randy was trying to copy FW. I was there in 1980 -83 'Alive' and was deep in the dialog with other axe wielders. So NO influence, coping, or inspiration was infused onto Randy by or from Ed. Which was impossible....
Tommy Aldridge has the most chilling comment. He said he told Randy at that time, "Randy, the only way you're getting out of these contracts is if you die."
@@ryanjacobson2508 THAT being said, can you imagine if Randy were alive and was still with Ozzy, had recorded "Bark At The Moon," and toured with Motley Crue, who were promoting "Shout At The Devil?"

Randy was still under contract. He couldn't just "leave." He would've done what became "Speak of the Devil," another studio record and tour, and THEN left the band
No one gets more credit for doing less than ozzy, Tony and geezer wrote the Sabbath and Randy and Daisley wrote the ozzy stuff that was great, Ozzys music now is horrible. Brad was brilliant on this record
The greatest mystery was why an always sober Randy Rhodes got into that plane. A stolen plane. With a drugged-using roadie claiming to be a pilot. It makes no sense unless boredom of being on the road coupled with thrill-seeking.
after the first 2 albums, there was no band. there was ozzy, and hired musicians. with Randy's death on the table, and us hearing that they were best friends. can you blame ozzy for never wanting to have a final replacement? sure the actions he did was shitty, but the man got fucked in sabbath and by Randy's death just 3 years later. that's gotta be heavy on the mental health
In the early 80s, I thought I was an Ozzy fan. I quickly realized I was actually a Randy Rhoads fan (as well as a fan of Bob Daisley, Brad Gillis and Jake E Lee).
I get so tired of Norman's stories on one hand because they are so inconsistent. He just makes stuff up. He always claims several songs came from the soundcheck or rehearsal. Not true. Speak of The Devil LP is the second Ritz show start to finish with the exception of just one song: "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is the only one from rehearsal. Not "four or five songs." The vocals are dubbed, There are two big edits that I heard. One is to cut the "hi hat break" section before the last verse in "War Pigs" (probably because Ozzy was screaming an F bomb right into the mic). The other was to shorten "Iron Man" or fix it because Gillis had a colossal blunder in one section. I just listened to both shows SBD and that's the way it was .... The first show is not bad but they were way tighter on the second show. Particularly Tommy Aldridge. It was kind of funny on "Black Sabbath" on the first night he starts it out with a triplet/blues feel for a few bars. He clearly didn't know the material that well - understandable. But on "Snowblind" that first night he ever so briefly mimics Ward's part with the big quarter notes - crash and bass drum. But then quickly goes into the more rock beat treatment with snare on 2 and 4. I wish he wouldn't have "corrected" that.
People’s memories aren’t perfect. Not sure how old you guys are but can you exactly recall what you did in 1982, with whom, for how long, where, with what. And would all your buddies agree with you.

Negative. Thats bullshit. Let's see an article, an interview, or a transcript where Ozzy even alludes to that. Ozzy thought his career was over when Randy was killed. He took it as a warning that it was absolutely over, but he was going to fire Randy? I don't think so

Saw Ozzy with Brad at Hammersmith on this tour, great versions of these Sabbath songs and such a powerful sound/mix
As I remember, both bands were claiming that THEIR live album was superior to the other one.
i dont blame Randy. Its not easy to play black sabbath songs.
@@backtoshallabal6662 Randy does do an amazing job with Paranoid in Milwaukee, Jan. 22. They say something went wrong with some of his equipment or pedal before the show that night but you couldn't tell it! It's like one of the best sounding live solos I've ever heard him do.

Seriously, I've been in bands, and it's pretty common to hear musicians say something like "Come on, do we really have to play Paranoid... again??"
Now, Over The Mountain... you gotta have some chops to pull THAT one off.
Ozzy recut his vocals but he sounds absolutely maniacal on the album. I love the album
Randy was under contract with Ozzy for 5 records. Randy was desperate to get out of his contract, talked to another band member of how to possibly get out of by filing a lawsuit. He was sick and tired of Ozzy's bullshit and he was at the end of his rope.
What did Randy not like about Ozzy?
Ozzy’s unprofessionalism & alcoholism. There were many shows canceled due to Ozzy’s habits & mental health. Ozzy would become belligerent and violent. Also, the fact it started as a “band” and quickly become an Ozzy solo project with Randy becoming a sideman.
@@AngelofAnguish probably Sharon running everything. They ditched Daisley & Kerslake after recording Diary for no apparent reason other than they weren't as popular in the US as Sarzo & Aldrirge.
@@AngelofAnguish
Drunk and abusive.
Brad is Just FUCKING AMAZING.. INCREDIBLY Underrated.. AS HIS TONE ..HOLY SHIT.... NO ONE had a better sound in those days!!!! NO ONE...
Aside from having a fear of flying, Randy loved trains. He used to collect model trains
That’s crazy!
@@clownpocket Yes, he was crazy about those trains.
@@MrClassicmetal I see what you did there. LOL
@@ThisUnderWorldOfDarkness 🤘🏼😁🤘🏼
That was an awesome release, the band had a great chemistry. Brad did an amazing job, loved he’s tone . Sucks you can’t purchase in the USA, have to go to Canada or Europe.
Really? Why not? Is it because the album is called something different in the States, or because it is out of print?
I was lucky enough to be Kelly's drum text through the heydaze and got to watch Brad every night from stage left
I’d love to hear the whole interview
Speak of the Devil is awesome!
Ozzy always acts like Randy was his best friend but Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge said several times that Randy didn't really like Ozzy .
When Randy's brother and sister were in danger of losing the family's music school, the Osbournes remained quiet. With all their wealth they could've stepped in and at least helped out a bit, but they couldn't be bothered.
Thats all Sharon's doing. She screwed every musician in that band, ozzy is a cowardly fraud
No wonder Ozzy sounded so good and in tune, and didn’t forget lyrics. Great album all around. Brad Gillis was great.
Ozzy is a great voice with a great image, but that's as far as it goes. The musicians he plays with do all the real work.
Brad Gillis was great on the album !
Can you ask max if they played no bone movies at the 1982 irvine show and if there is a untouched soundboard recording of said show?
None of the playing was fixed in the studio, just some of Ozzy's vocals, so its still mostly live
A rare not known fact is Ozzy had shaved his head during this time and he is actually wearing a wig for the cover of that album .
Great album.
Always has been always will be world f****** class guitar player
I like his raw vocals on the speak of the devil bootleg.
Raw meaning the few notes ozzy hit between the cracking of his voice?
@@chancewilkins3320 you know I gave it another listen youre correct its terrible. The 2nd night performance for the album is great
That album cover as well as TS Stay Hungry freaked me out as a kid lol ..very scary covers.
Ozzy has always been sort of a fraud since he left Sabbath. Poor Randy would probably still be alive had he not joined that clown.
Yes, but who knows if we would have had the chance to hear him play.
and maybe Cliff Burton will be still alive if he wasn't part of Metallica and so and so
You both have valid points but I guess we will never know unfortunately.
Sharon was not cool with the situation. She wanted to beat her dad to the punch because Black Sabbath were about to release a live album at that time.
As much as I love Dio I think Speak was better
To be honest, Talk/Speak of the Devil is my favourite rendition of the Sabbath tunes live, they are certainly some of the heaviest. Brad did an amazing job given the time constraints. I do get the worship for Randy, but for me Jake was the best guitarist Ozzy had- especially live.
i agree w ya on Jake. that's a bold statement but i think Bark at the moon really showcased how he complimented the rest of the band
@@MrClassicmetal "played Randy's parts with more conviction than Randy himself"
Lol. No.
I love Jake as a guitarist and I've seen him live...but it's laughable that he played Randy's parts with more conviction than Randy.
As a matter of fact, I've always felt like Jake's renditions of Randy's songs were somewhat empty.
@@MrClassicmetal You are a delusional TROLL.
Brad gillis is absolutely brilliant on this record, as is rudy, tommy and ozzy. I love tribute but the mix on this record is fucking phenomenal. And randy is the reason i started playing. Sharon ...... lost for words
Brad and Jake are legendary. Nobody could replace Randy. But they are both VERY underrated
Brad Gillis was at his peak on SPEAK OF THE DEVIL
Why isn’t Speak of the devil on Spotify?
Because Ozzy doesn't like the record, which he really was forced to do by Sharon's father, Don Arden, and doesnt want it on there. Ozzy: "I don't give a f**k about that album. It's just a bunch of bullshit Sabbath covers."
Brad Gillis was great on Speak of the Devil so was Rudy and Tommy Aldridge that band was so tight I mean they played great together, it wasn't Randy but for what it was those guys played great.
So are there any truly "live" live albums?
Nope. Only the bootlegs you can now find on youtube of all these bands. Audio is better in some than others but you get a real sense of how they were night to night. Randy is consistent but sometimes a bit sloppier or less aggressive on the night. Always tight though. Great player.
Man.... I always thought this record was really recorded live..... always been maybe my fav. Ozzy record. I'm kinda bummed now.
It still was despite vocal and effects changes for the most part
Imagine had they done into the void at the ritz? Would the ritz have crumbled from the sound ?
Brad -189
Black Sabbath tunes - 0
Brad Absolutely destroyed that record. Masterpiece
Sweet Leave?
I wonder why Tommy didn't want to do it, the songs he was playing, he didn't record. I like Tommy, I am just wondering.
he had no say
Because like Randy, he didnt like Sabbaths music
Randy probably would of been done after one more album.
Ozzy was a total loon back then, so yeah he probably was fed up.
How did he get convinced to go on that little plane if he hated flying? It’s too ironic… (the way he died).

Doesn't matter to me. This album changed my life. It should have been randy playing on the recording.....
after the first 2 albums, there was no band. there was ozzy, and hired musicians. with Randy's death on the table, and us hearing that they were best friends. can you blame ozzy for never wanting to have a final replacement? sure the actions he did was shitty, but the man got fucked in sabbath and by Randy's death just 3 years later. that's gotta be heavy on the mental health

@@superhuman6156 Facts! I wholeheartedly agree!👍🤘🔥
Brad Gillis has also claimed 4 or 5 of those songs were from soundcheck on Eddie Trunk show
whole lota speculation and bullshit. I agree
