Brad Gillis was amazing. He had to learn the songs and solos very quickly and he nailed it. Brad going to Night Ranger was probably best for him. He had a long career with them. How sad that Randy endured the alleged abuse by Ozzy.
I agree with Randy's stance about recording a cover album of BS songs. Financially, it was understandable but I can see Rhoads' and Aldridge's point of view.
The working relationship must have been volatile in order for Rhoads to contemplate leaving.
I think the best person to ask about all this would be Sarzo.

Everyone forgets the huge job Guitarist Bernie Torme did right after Randy's tragic death, he basically learned the setlist coming over on the plane, and had one quick rehearsal! And had to be there among everyone still clearly reeling from the passing of Randy! So saying he wasn't fully welcomed? Is an understatement! 100% agree with Guitar Rocks, if Randy would have lived he would have been screwed over like many other musicians that has worked with Ozzy/Sharron over the years. You mentioned Jake E. Lee, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake ..I'd also add in George Lynch. He was slotted to play for Ozzy after Randy but had a job doing deliveries or something so had to cut his hair. He is told he's got the job quits the job that is paying the bills only to find out they hired Jake E. Lee.

I will be the first to admit I can't play but three cords, so I am sure that many people getting the chance to play with Ozzy would be amazing. HOWEVER, its too bad that once word got out other musicians didn't just say "thanks but no thanks". His tone on that album is awesome & underrated! I forgot the model, but a great old Mesa Boogie & I think it was split in stereo somehow with another head with a slight chorus or delay to get that huge sound. I liked that he put his own spin on things, especially songs like Snowblind. Songs like Never Say Die he played pretty straight on, but Brad definitely has his own feel/sound. In my opinion he honored the feel of the original song while adding his own techniques tastefully. I know a few people that didn’t like it, but I feel a majority of people enjoyed it

it is almost like a Tom Schultz Rockman kind of midrange, but I would guess
using a boogie cab with the EV speakers had a lot to do with it, the voice coils in those cabs could handle loud volume without breaking up, as well as the pre amp stages of the amp .
those Amps were first of their kind with 5 pre amp stages .

Speak of the Devil late night show at the Ritz was easily one of the greatest metal shows I've ever seen. I've seen some real good ones back in the day but I'd have to put it in my top 5. Particularly cause it was wild seeing ozz, Brad, Rudy and Tommy in such a small venue. As well as cause Brad was just the biggest monster of a gtr player that night on Earth! 💯🔥💯 And I wish I could somehow thank the bouncer who looked out for me and my two friends by letting us in a side door cause we were 16/17 and underage for the Ritz. We were the youngest people there that night. It was a highlight of my teenage years and I couldn't be more thankful for him letting us in. Yes, this is an interesting video with good information. I remember reading an article in a rock magazine back then where Ozzy said he released the Sabbath material because he didn't want to do a disservice to Rhodes, as the material from the first two albums were largely written by him and he had recently passed away. Now it seems that isn't the case, as he was talking about doing the Sabbath songs WITH Randy Rhodes!
Also, the timing of the release of Speak of the Devil being released around the same time Sabbath released their Live Evil 2 record set makes you wonder. As I remember, both bands were claiming that THEIR live album was superior to the other one.

Regardless of all of the arguments about, it not being a real live album, is still my favorite live album. I just wish, there wasn’t so much shenanigans surrounding it. And I would love to see full length footage from those shows, if they still exist. So far all I have seen is the memoirs of a madman DVD footage, of fairies wear boots. The speak of the devil DVD we got, is not from these New York shows. It’s from the diary of a madman tour, after Randy’s death.

Didn't get a full life to live like Jake which turned into a junkie. I I lived it, i saw EVH , Randy, Jake all front row. I met Jake on the bark tour. Jake was told to be a copy, he was a blues oriented guitarist that was told to play like Randy and couldn't. His best work was outside of Ozzy.

My above statement was noting the disparity between Recorded date vs release date of Diary. Diary was recorded after the Blizzard Euro tour, mainly Great Britain. without going into all speculations...It was recorded before FW was heard by Randy Yet Diary was Released way after. So Fair Warning was renown for Edwards new styles of Vibrato..sounds not put down on his 3 previous albums. So people, especially EVH Fanboys were talking shiite that Randy was trying to copy FW. I was there in 1980 -83 'Alive' and was deep in the dialog with other axe wielders. So NO influence, coping, or inspiration was infused onto Randy by or from Ed. Which was impossible....

I get so tired of Norman's stories on one hand because they are so inconsistent. He just makes stuff up. He always claims several songs came from the soundcheck or rehearsal. Not true. Speak of The Devil LP is the second Ritz show start to finish with the exception of just one song: "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is the only one from rehearsal. Not "four or five songs." The vocals are dubbed, There are two big edits that I heard. One is to cut the "hi hat break" section before the last verse in "War Pigs" (probably because Ozzy was screaming an F bomb right into the mic). The other was to shorten "Iron Man" or fix it because Gillis had a colossal blunder in one section.
I just listened to both shows SBD and that's the way it was ....
The first show is not bad but they were way tighter on the second show. Particularly Tommy Aldridge. It was kind of funny on "Black Sabbath" on the first night he starts it out with a triplet/blues feel for a few bars. He clearly didn't know the material that well - understandable. But on "Snowblind" that first night he ever so briefly mimics Ward's part with the big quarter notes - crash and bass drum. But then quickly goes into the more rock beat treatment with snare on 2 and 4. I wish he wouldn't have "corrected" that.
