I'm about to buy an X5 with that feature; this is a good, real-world review of the 3rd row seating - Wish more reviewers would be as practical as this.
You should set the angle of the second seat row to the angle close to vertical (as you show), when you use the third seat row. This would give you about 4 inches (10 cm) more space for your knees. But on the video, you set the second seat row angle to the position where it interferes most with the third seat row. That's why you are not comfortable sitting in the third seat row. You can also move the second row forward in two positions. It looks like you only move the second row forward the first position. You should be able to move it yet 2-4 inches (5-10 cm). With both these adjustments there will be more space for people in the third seat row (at the expense of space for people in second row).
Thank you very much for an honest review. As a 3 series owner, I was looking for a larger vehicle for my 2 new children with car seats, and a nanny, and of course I wanted to stay in the BMW family. This was very enlightening, and it seems we need something larger.
Good video that clearly indicates the issues around the design of the third row seating. I have watched the Hyundai Santa Fe 2019 videos and it is clearly a better design and function when comparing third row seating.
I have NEVER seen a proper review of 3rd row seating in any SUV. They ALL forget to raise the back rest of the middle row and they never move the middle row forwards. So what you end up with is the middle row passengers are left with more than enough leg room than they need to be comfortable and the 3rd row are left with zero, because the middle row hasn’t been pushed forward. Why?
I totally agree! I've tested this out in my 2012 X5. I'm 6'2, 200lbs and can in fact fit in the 3rd row when the middle row is adjusted accordingly (I've sat in the middle row to make sure I have enough ample leg space and I do). Would I ever want to suffer in the tight 3rd row for more than a 1 hour drive? Certainly not! But nonetheless, for shorter (small framed) adults and children, the 3rd row actually works well!
there should be a slide system etc of the 3rd row,, the people must decide themselves they want luggage or sitting space,,that would make 3rd row more meaningful
You wouldn't be able to move the third row back much further because of the rake of the tailgate window, ie the occupant would hit their head on the glass. The only way to realistically get more space for the 3rd row occupants is to change the shape of the boot area from the C pillar back.... This is why all the full size SUVs with proper space for the third row are either boxy (discovery) or huge (GL)... Thats the point Lincoln makes at the end. The X5 3rd row is not for adults / long drives.
slide 1-2 inches the 2nd row and 1st row seat to the front and adjust the reclining angle to be around 95 degrees, and 5"11 like you could seat comfortably in the 3rd row :)
I really like BMW,..and your review was honest, straight forward and very informative in your demonstration. I feel BMW dropped the ball in their engineering dept and should have designed the seat to be further back and slightly raised. It appeared you had the headroom and a few inches into the cargo area would have made a world of difference. For this reason I go back to Audi and get a Q7 which slightly longer and slightly less exciting suv..and my kids go to VW for the Tiguan which still has more room than the BMW.
Honestly i realy like the fact you the way you said it the negatives in positively way . I'm realy looking for a 7seater SUV and right here it was x5 or the discovery land rover
Cool review...I don't need a 3rd row, but it is a nice to have...I had an old x5 with no third row and I now I have a pathfinder with a 3rd row.... I love the path and never used the 3rd, but I still like having it...I love the way my old bmw drove. Oh...the point. ...lol...I love the review and it pretty much confirms that i will stay with my path. ...the X7 comes out in a year or so, but not in my budget....
Judge Dreader no nothing bigger ..BMW isn't a fuckin mini van my x 5 is twin turbo v8 and it get down..I'm not interested in a giant clodhoping suv..by a expedition if u want a house eon wheels BMW is sport utility not large capacity van..don't change what's already great .my 02 x5 is still under 90k miles and I wouldn't buy any larger it's perfect..two kids two adults ..u got more kids u probably are not buying a 80 k ride.
Agreed....3rd row is absolutely useless in this car....waste of design.....I never understood why companies make 3rd row seats for some SUVs and no one can use them the least bit..... BMW wasted time by trying to add a 3rd row to the x5.....just do away with it and have a back seat.....the x5 is a nice car though......anyone who wants a 3rd row that you can actually use needs to wait on the x7.......
I own a 2016 X5 (40D M Sport) with 3rd row seats. Problem is the true rear seats have an issue - one side sits flush when fully reclined (pushed back) whilst the other side (passenger side) has a gap of a couple inches? BMW UK are telling me this is how it is on all X5's with 3rd row seats? How can the seats sit flush on one side and not the other? When I purchased the car I pointed out this issue and said it would need to be resolved, which they stated would be done via warranty and now today (having purchased the car months ago) they say that's how its supposed to be (?). Thoughts?
Very throrough presentation. However, a convinience feature is best demonstrated by performing simple, easy steps. Don't ge me wrong, I truly appreciate how honest you were in describing how it's not confortable at all, but those seeking a vehicle with third row seating want it to be a seamless task: slide here, lift, get the damn kids in there, go! Type of thing.
Wow. Thanks so much for this. Amazingly insightful and helpful. Will still be buying an X5 just not as a 7 seater option. Not practical at all. Especially considering we will need to have child seats installed.
They could've definitely left less trunk space and make more comfortable seats in the third row. The trunk looks like a Q7 or a galaxy with the 7 seats up. Should've struck a better balance there because those seats are not ok neither for kids nor dogs, let alone an adult for 30 seconds.
Such a great brand it’s a shame they cant come up with something more practical and functional for families. I really appreciate this honest review, clearly this car would not work for my family of four. 😓
akui88 dear! I own this car! And the 3rd row seats can fit 11 yr old boy very comfortably! The tip is that you should move the 2nd row seats a bit forward and life goes easy for the passengers on the 3rd row seats! Best regards
Omg this suv is horrible. How can it be considered a luxury suv with how difficult it is to fold the second row chair and lets no talk about the limited space in the 3rd row. This is not worth my money.
What a joke that third row is for that kinda price tag! 5 sweater SUVs DO NOT make sense to me. SUV must seat 7 or 8 passengers with comfort otherwise get a car
There are those of us who OCCASIONALLY need the third row and don’t want to drive around a bus as a DAILY driver for an OCCASIONAL need such as in-laws in town or bring one of our kids friends along for a play-date. It is hard to park a long SUV especially in the grocery store parking lot with NARROW rows.
Bmw x5 is not a suv for parents with kids for travel. Too tight, driving not feel smooth for kids in back, the worst (stupid thing) 2nd row searback not be reclined ( any angle). Looks luxury but when you owe it looks cheapest ( even QX60) crazy bmw x5.
I'm about to buy an X5 with that feature; this is a good, real-world review of the 3rd row seating - Wish more reviewers would be as practical as this.
thumbs up for a honest video and good presentation
Amazingly honest, you earned the respect of many people sir, thank you.
Fry Wolf At least he didn’t say he fit comfortably.
You should set the angle of the second seat row to the angle close to vertical (as you show), when you use the third seat row.

Certainly an honest review 👍
I appreciated this review- I didn't even know BMW had a three row option.

I have bought the BMW Gran Tourer ( F46). It has a very useful 3rd seats row. I have 4 kids and they fit very well in the car.

I wish you slid the 2nd row forward a bit for compromise and get a bit more space on the 3rd row. Thanks for the great video.
Super honest review. I appreciate that immensely.
Best review ever. Answered all my questions. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Very informative. Thank you!

3rd row folds down.

Excellent demonstration, good job 🤠👌🇺🇸🇰🇼
New Subscriber. Awesome demonstration on the BMW X5.
I'd like the same 3rd row for the x6, my dream one.
Really good review. Eye opening, not enough shoe squeeking
When you're done with the car let me have it at a low rate. I'm a fan of you and BMWs. Reply for contact info
Discovery 4 third row just amazing!!!
Thank you for keeping it real👍🏼
Honest salesman, a rarity.
If you are looking for most 3rd row space within mid sized suv, infinity qx60 is the one go with.
Honest review, great job!
Excellent presentation.
Love this video.
Very honest review.
Honestly i realy like the fact you the way you said it the negatives in positively way . I'm realy looking for a 7seater SUV and right here it was x5 or the discovery land rover
I think its good for preschool and primary school children or adults 5ft tall or shorter
Cool review...I don't need a 3rd row, but it is a nice to have...I had an old x5 with no third row and I now I have a pathfinder with a 3rd row.... I love the path and never used the 3rd, but I still like having it...I love the way my old bmw drove.

BMW: Say no more
They made on already
Very honest video
need 3rd row soon but after watching this am going to have to buy something else. Sad day when I stop driving a BMW
Great video. Thank you.
You look like MMA’s George St Pierre!
Thumbs up for your honest.

Is it possible to convert the 7 seater to a 5? I'd rather have the storage space.
Nice review thanks
I have a 2017 BMW X5. I’m eying the new X7 once it’s available.
Did you get one?
Does it have a spare tire?
Most BMW's do not have a spare, and especially an X5 with a 3rd row will not have one. It will come with run-flat tires.
Is it safe to put a child car seat in the 3rd row?
My x5 doesn’t have the 3rd row. Can I install it afterwards?
You cannot. It requires different suspension.

Short distance, just get in the trunk
Lol
Darsh The Upcoming big facts😂
That's even tighter and smaller than my 2017 MDX.
:/
Robert LeBlanc my kids love the 2rd row in my 2016 mdx they are 9 and 12 enough space for them but this x5 3rd row they will suffer
Honda's suck
tighter and smaller, the reason for me to not buy
that 3rd seat is definitely for kids
Seat cost pls???
Thank you

Am i able to buy a rhird row separately??
No, it has to be built in at the factory.
It's ok for tiny space, but I wish that BMW a big name make some automatic up & down seats atleast with little comfort for children. So I may buy
So with these 7 seats, you can comfortably seat 4 adults
and in an emergency ??
What’s up
Never have I seen someone make such an easy task look so bloody difficult
Wait, the X5 has a third row of seats and I didn't even know??? We own one and we didn't even know.
Work pretty good with kids
Such a great brand it’s a shame they cant come up with something more practical and functional for families. I really appreciate this honest review, clearly this car would not work for my family of four. 😓
How won’t it work for a family of 4. You , your partner & two children .. you don’t even need to two rear seats… unless you mean family of 6?
third row definitely are dog seats.
Why even bother with the extra seats its almost imposible to use it. I'm staying with my acura mdx 2017.
I love the MDX but the seats are just as useless... looking at Accent and Pilot are the moment
Best third row seats award goes to Toyota Innova :p
thats a van not an suv...
Like from Saudi
You'd make for a good salesman...
Why can't we get the X5 M with a third row of seats?!
Useful for for kids. No adult should sit in the back rode seats anyways.
people below 5 feet will be happy there
Pain in the butt to set up.
Where is the space for 3rd row seat????? 🤣
The 3rd row seat perfect for one cat. That's shameful SUV.
I have one nice
Even 1. Generation Volvo xc90 3. Row System is more useful, easier and spacious.
I have a bmw 7 seater I swear
I have answer to the third row Audi Q7
the Q7 is ugly though

It’s not that bad.
audis are weak
Wow BMW has ALOT to learn from GM, Ford and Dodge as far as convenience goes.
well you can also say gm ford and dodge has a lot to learn from bmw, audi, and benz as far as luxury and refinement goes
for the same size and weight, in the same segment you don t have something that s much better than this
Yes , its better a porsche cayenne that BMW X5 , this is a scam.
jh5kl would you consider the Volvo XC90 In the same segment? It’s certainly in the same price category
real shit
i have this vehicle and the seats barely fit my 5 year old nephew...
i would not recommend it, its a 1,200$ option that just takes away cargo room...
akui88 dear! I own this car! And the 3rd row seats can fit 11 yr old boy very comfortably! The tip is that you should move the 2nd row seats a bit forward and life goes easy for the passengers on the 3rd row seats! Best regards
Third rows should be banned in midsize SUVs. Looks like someone could suffocate back there whether they’re a child or an adult.
Hy wow much
BMW X5 3rd row should only be for children and midgets.
He forgot to adjust the 3rd row. It can be moved back....jk, in your dreams
If we open 3rd row then we cannot sit 2nd row.. Ha ha ha
Omg this suv is horrible. How can it be considered a luxury suv with how difficult it is to fold the second row chair and lets no talk about the limited space in the 3rd row. This is not worth my money.

lol failed suv in my country
Worthless 3rd row seat. Why even try putting one if none would fit in it.
Waste of money no 3rd row needed
Honest video of the most stupidest BMW ever manufactured
廢話一堆!
Waste of time and money
Don't be a poser and buy a BMW because they're unreliable money pits.
Not worthy
Big NO...Drive GL450 better option overall
Different size and class, not comparable.
Complete useless 3rd row.
