I love Stardew Valley, but I still keep an old save of HM: MFoMT and Rune Factory 3 and I revisit those games just for the pure nostalgia. HM is for the pure wholesome casual town life and RF3 for fighting bosses and dealing 5k damage by casting water beams from your watering can which has +180 magic attack for some reason.
Harvest Moon FoMT and MFoMT was so important to my childhood. I remember being half asleep and fishing, listening for the little ! sounds to know it was time to mash through the catching text and then cast again. I miss Rival heart events, it made the characters feel real, and like their lives weren't dependent on me to progress. And it's not like triggering the rival marriage was easy to stumble into, you had experience, what, 5 heart events and then stumble into the church on their designated day?
just a bit of story remembered my older brother said he wanted to make more money before the marriage in mfomt but as he was playing he thought all that rival event was just nothing other than fun event to see and by the end everyone get married except for him.after that when he played other hm game he wooed every candidate either out spite or just for fun😂
At long last, the Harvest Moon video! While I love Stardew Valley, I do think there's merit in playing some of these older Harvest Moon titles. In any case, I do hope your all ready because I'll be tackling another Pokemon game for my next video. Which one? You'll have to wait. Trust me, I don't think your going to expect it. To the newcomers, I hope you stay and enjoy!
No shade but seeing the middle square in the grass patch empty made me panic lol. Seeds go in a 3x3 so you can till the middle section and get another crop. Doing the 8 tiles is good early game since once they reach a certain state they block your path to watering that middle square. I love that mechanic since it heavily incentivizes upgrading your watering can to at least Silver. And it also incentivizes Harvest Sprites since they will be able to harvest the middle square for regrowing plants (and even if you don't like using Harvest Sprites it gives you an additional crop at the end of the season).
My absolute childhood. The music and graphics are so lovely and I always come back to it from time to time, even though I never get ultra far. Harvest Moon DS is very similar to this, but with so much more content and definitely worth trying out!
FOMT was the first farming sim I ever played. A lot of happy memories playing this gem. I played HM: DS after that but for some reason, it just never clicked for me like FOMT did.
The classic "Harvest Moon" isn't made by the same studio that is making modern "Harvest Moon." "Since Marvelous acquired their own in-house localization team (X-Seed), they split ways with Natsume, however, Natsume still owned the name "harvest moon" as the Japanese name is "Bokujou Monogatari" and thus Natsume started creating harvest moon games and Marvelous changed the name to "Story of Seasons." (im super lazy and ended up quoting Metrona on readit)" Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning (2012) was the last "Bokujou Monogatari" game named "Harvest Moon", the games that came after 2012 named "Harvest Moon" where made by Natsume in house. While all the "Bokujou Monogatari" localized by X-Seed where named "Story of seasons." Thus the shift in quality of modern Harvest Moon games. In fact this game has a remake for the switch called Story of Seasons- friends of mineral town that came out in 2020 which has many quality of life improvements.
been a huge harvest moon fan since I was a kid!! I remember playing 3 games (friends in mineral town and eventually got into playing the girl version later on, hero of leaf valley and i think there's another one for the psp?). I admittedly didnt play it "properly" (aka, never making it past the first year of spring and didnt get married), as i was just running around doing stuff and never taking it seriously up until like a few years ago when I decided to replay them haha (for those curious, in MFoMT; I married Gray (aka best boy next to Cliff. Fight me.) And for Hero of Leaf Valley, I married Katie (also best girl. Alice is a close second I guess)) I still hold very fond memories of them and i'm so glad people are talking about it T v T!!
Mineral Town and Save the Homeland was my childhood. Those were the few games my religious parents would deem "not demonic." continued to play it till the psp/ds era. I spent a lot of time on their experimental futuristic harvest moon called innocent life and the fishing focused river king too. but Rune factory definitely was the best next gen harvest moon at the time. i still enjoy the new ones in the genre on pc like harvestella, rune factory pc ports, stardew, staxel and am eagerly waiting for mistria to be out of early access.
I like rival marriage at old harvest moon or SoS game, it's make other characters from town feel "alive", i hope they can bring it back for future game, just make rival can't marriage before you married, especially because at a lof Harvest moon or SoS game, you cant divorce, so that's not much loss from that. Rival marriage at old harvest moon game (BTN) also very hard to trigger, they have specific requirements (date, location, and girl heart) for it to happen, to the point, have your rival getting married is harder than your character try getting married😅
It is funny that the requirements for those to trigger are a bit out there. But I do like the idea of these events. If I'm gonna have a fictional town, I want more things happening in it.
I loved this game as a kid, easily one of my favorites of all time, played it on ps1. Hundreds and hundreds of hours in a time when internet in every home wasn't a thing, so I had to figure out a lot of stuff on my own or wait until Friday so I could visit an internet cafe and search for a guide. This video give me so much nostalgia... My mother and my brother would judge me for playing it because they thought it was a boring game, but for me was even therapeutic, it helped me a lot with anxiety and it even was a staple for me to learn English by myself -I'm a Spanish speaker. BTW just now I realized there was such a thing as rival events!! Didn't even know that was a thing. I always married the nurse, she was so cute. Goddam I love this game 🥺 I loved the sound it made every time you put something in your backpack lol
That's a great story to share. I fine similar stories of how farming games are therapeutic to a lot of people. I agree on that. It's the calming atmosphere that gets you. And I think there's a lot of value in that.
The OG farming sim i play as a kid. And now we have so many game inspired by that game. Like "sakuna of rice and ruin" i kind like how this genre can be fantasy farming with god and mythical creature or cozy daily life as a farmer.
I love the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games. I owned the original SNES game and the second and third Gameboy games before getting it plus many games after it but I think this is the one I put the most time in.
theres a solution to money problem by that point you have befriended the harvest sprites enough to ask them for help use them sweet potatoes are a money making factory along with the sprites.
@TheComboist and apparently so is gnome/sprites labor ..... And all they ask is apparently flour for some reason they liked it. I should know I speed run marrying Karen in around a year (it's possible thou you gotta know everything) and how to make money fast.
@TheComboist Final Fantasy Tactics on the GBA is a favorite of mine too. If you do a video on that, I'll watch it. Just a suggestion though. You do you. 👍
Ahhh yes, my childhood handheld game, i still remember how tedious the process to marry H.Goddesses, the worst part is, she didn't even live with me, yet get preggo for some reason, 😂😂😂 I lost count on how many times i replay this game, solely for marrying each of the girls, gotta say, ellie is my fav... 10/10 won't marry H.Goddesses again...
I remember finding it hard to progress my farm and never managed to get to the purple heart with bachelors so I would just give up every time I attempted to play MFOMT lol. Stamina runs out annoyingly fast which made reaching lower levels in the cave difficult, earning enough money to buy a decent amount of animals takes forever, shit gets ridiculously grindy and quickly becomes less enjoyable. I tried cheats but they never worked lmaooo very frustrating game overall.
My introduction to farming sims was the original Harvest Moon for the SNES. (On emulator though…ssshhh…) Then Friends of Mineral Town for the GBA. Then Stardew Valley came out, been playing it ever since.
@ It did. The big updates helped keep it fresh too. I’ve tried newer HM games but unfortunately they just couldn’t compare. Even Story of Seasons games.
while I like star and had a great time with it, but it never filled the shoes of harvest moon for me. I still always go back to the older titles and rune factoryn
Im not speedrunner, but I loved to marry Karen ASAP. Shes expensive, and likes Wine. That means, farm, got to mines and get minerals to sell. The beauty is that inside the mines, time stops. The buy the basket first, and take it to mine. Then mine until tired and spend one hour on the hot springs to recover. Do that until about 4am, then recover stamina e run to arrive on your bed before 6am (usually, 5:50am. Yes, I slept about 10 minutes per day) If you dont recover stamina before sleeping, you will oversleep and lose time. With that, I got a stupid amount of money soon. I did another trick involving pinapples, I but I'll stop here
In Indonesia, gen alpha wouldn't know how cherished this game is for boomer to gen Z. I was playing this game when I was like 3 months old. Yes still a baby, it's fun and now it's felt nostalgia playing it again if I wanted to 🥲 Edit: if you play ps1 version, the MC is actually has reason instead of lost kid founded by old man farmer. We were his grandkid and got separate so the grandpa say why not having fun with me and my farm instead? Mc also has childhood crush (depend on which girl you want to date with) and when we bout to go home, the girl asked will you coming back? Now that's gentleman a true storytelling unlike the GBA 😂
I love Stardew Valley, but I still keep an old save of HM: MFoMT and Rune Factory 3 and I revisit those games just for the pure nostalgia.

For sure. I think it really adds to the world itself, always moving like you. Helps feel more surreal.
just a bit of story remembered my older brother said he wanted to make more money before the marriage in mfomt but as he was playing he thought all that rival event was just nothing other than fun event to see and by the end everyone get married except for him.after that when he played other hm game he wooed every candidate either out spite or just for fun😂

I definitely had a parasocial relationship with Gray growing up
Always that one character we get attached to.
No shade but seeing the middle square in the grass patch empty made me panic lol. Seeds go in a 3x3 so you can till the middle section and get another crop. Ohh, I see. That makes quite a lot of sense now. And it's all good haha. I enjoy learning things post video. It's nice.
My absolute childhood. The music and graphics are so lovely and I always come back to it from time to time, even though I never get ultra far. Harvest Moon DS is very similar to this, but with so much more content and definitely worth trying out!
It be great to come back to this series for another video. I'm sure it be fun fo see how things change with another title.
I started on Harvest Moon for the DS. Loved it as a kid and still enjoy it occasionally if the cartridge decides to work properly 😅
Oh hey, nice. Physical carts are always nice to have. I should give more of the series a try when I have the chance.
4:40 I can't be the only one who can spot where the stair is just by looking. It's spot always looks bit darker.
FOMT was the first farming sim I ever played. A lot of happy memories playing this gem.
I played HM: DS after that but for some reason, it just never clicked for me like FOMT did.
Seems to be a common sentiment regarding DS. Perhaps FOMT really does hit different.

What a fascinating tale of events. That certainly would explain a lot. I always appreciate learning something new from the comments section. Thanks!
I believe they also make the Rune factory games. Which also add some combat to the game.
Oh, I've heard of that series. From what I know, it'd got some quality games.

I'm real glad to read about peoples memories with this game. I, myself, never played it so it's nice to hear these accounts.

Its looking good for the future of farming games. Rune Factory is something I ought to cover in the future when I can.
I like rival marriage at old harvest moon or SoS game, it's make other characters from town feel "alive", i hope they can bring it back for future game, just make rival can't marriage before you married, especially because at a lof Harvest moon or SoS game, you cant divorce, so that's not much loss from that.

Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town!
The OG farming sim i play as a kid. And now we have so many game inspired by that game.
Like "sakuna of rice and ruin" i kind like how this genre can be fantasy farming with god and mythical creature or cozy daily life as a farmer.
There's infinite possibilities with the farming genre. That's what makes it so open for a general audience.
I love the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games. I owned the original SNES game and the second and third Gameboy games before getting it plus many games after it but I think this is the one I put the most time in.
Friends of Mineral Town really is a special game. Having played it, I can understand why.
I played Back to Nature in the 2000's, man, what game!
Every villager is so good, I love them.
The characters really do help build up the experience since you're always going to see them.
What I hated about FOMT is probably the insane money powercreep. Buying a house is insane and unreasonable and has surprisingly unforgiving aspects
GBA games really did have just a bit of that grinding to increase playtime.
theres a solution to money problem by that point you have befriended the harvest sprites enough to ask them for help use them sweet potatoes are a money making factory along with the sprites.
Not only are sweet potatoes delicious, but profitable.
@TheComboist and apparently so is gnome/sprites labor ..... And all they ask is apparently flour for some reason they liked it. I should know I speed run marrying Karen in around a year (it's possible thou you gotta know everything) and how to make money fast.
Friends of mineral Town, Back to Nature and Animal Parade (even with shit fps drops) my favorites.
Really should explore the other games in this series.
I played this! And I still have it! I gotta see this. xD
Its a bit of a slow start but that's how farming games are. It's fun!
@TheComboist Final Fantasy Tactics on the GBA is a favorite of mine too. If you do a video on that, I'll watch it. Just a suggestion though. You do you. 👍
Oh yes. I loved playing Tactics on the DS. I should give the GBA one a try when I can.
I always save mining for winter when no crops grow
A sound plan for the winter. Mining and gifting
i remember buying this for my gba advance.
Sank a stupid amount of hours on this one as a child. It was my favorite game of all time up until I got my hands on SDV
Same here, I loved it as a kid on my GBA.
Stardew Valley really is a phenomenal game. One of my favorites for sure.
Ahhh yes, my childhood handheld game, i still remember how tedious the process to marry H.Goddesses, the worst part is, she didn't even live with me, yet get preggo for some reason, 😂😂😂
I lost count on how many times i replay this game, solely for marrying each of the girls, gotta say, ellie is my fav...
10/10 won't marry H.Goddesses again...
Sometimes hard work isn't fully rewarded. : (
I remember finding it hard to progress my farm and never managed to get to the purple heart with bachelors so I would just give up every time I attempted to play MFOMT lol.

It's definitely one of those where you need to know what to do!
I wouldnt be able to learn English without FoMT/MFoMT...
somehow i know how to English after playing this game during my childhood..
Thats great to hear that a game could help you learn another language. Glad for you.
love this version than the back to nature one
Harvest moon and Rune Factory
Rune Factory really is due for a video in the future.
i remember play this gba game until 8 years in game time haha, i miss the feeling of that time, damn
Time really does fly. Especially these days.
11:45 too relatable :(
my introduction to the genre was mineral town :) lovely game
It really is a charming title.
My introduction to farming sims was the original Harvest Moon for the SNES. (On emulator though…ssshhh…)
Then Friends of Mineral Town for the GBA.
Then Stardew Valley came out, been playing it ever since.
Stardew Valley really did create a nnew standard for farming games.
@ It did. The big updates helped keep it fresh too.
I’ve tried newer HM games but unfortunately they just couldn’t compare. Even Story of Seasons games.
It really do be like that.
I hear that Maplestory night market bgm
That you do! I've been a longtime Mapler since the early 2000s. I think a Maplestory video might be in order later.
Harvest moon friends of mineral town psx is the best harvestmoon imo. The series after that is not even compare. Especially the character design
The Playstation version. I'm curious about how these other classics compare. Like the Gamecube and such?
while I like star and had a great time with it, but it never filled the shoes of harvest moon for me. I still always go back to the older titles and rune factoryn
Hearing all these praises about Rune Factory really makes me want to give the series a try.
well i switch to rune facotry 1 to 4
Best game in the series. Stardew Valley is a better game but Friends of Mineral Town is still worth playing.
Agreed. There's still something to enjoy about the GBA classic!
I prefer playing Rune Factory than Stardew Valley
I've heard praises for that series. Something I should give a try one of these days.
Im not speedrunner, but I loved to marry Karen ASAP.
Shes expensive, and likes Wine.

If you dont recover stamina before sleeping, you will oversleep and lose time.
With that, I got a stupid amount of money soon.
I did another trick involving pinapples, I but I'll stop here
Farmers when they discover their infinite money glitch.
Cutting grass is a waste of stamina, its better if you just take and throw them since it doesnt use stamina, the only downside is the time wasted
Thats certainly a good point. I do like the feeling of cutting lawn at once haha.
@TheComboist i also think that small stones should be kept instead of destroyed since it can be used as a fence and or decorations
Nothing like a Zen Garden to keep the farm appeal.
I like the PS version better 😂 i dont know how much time i had spent with Harvest moon
Sometimes it's fun to wonder how many hours we've actually accrued playing our favorites.
Fomt, btn, 64 ❤🎉
Only millenials prefer Harvest Moon. They have thing for nostalgia
Well, I could see that. But the series does have it's merits. Though these days the series is certainly just there.
The remake is pure shit. Original is way better
Hmm, I see. Heard the remake was decent enough but I never did play it.
In Indonesia, gen alpha wouldn't know how cherished this game is for boomer to gen Z.
I was playing this game when I was like 3 months old. Yes still a baby, it's fun and now it's felt nostalgia playing it again if I wanted to 🥲

Thats certainly is the gentleman way.
