The fact that there are no African bloodlines in Arabia or Iran despite such a long-term and massive importation of slaves tells you all you need to know about what happened to them in the end.
A point that often gets missed when talking about the Zanj rebellion or even Spartacus is that these were not rebellions against slavery as Hollywood would like to describe. They just didn't want to be the slaves. But in both cases the former slaves enslaved other people
@@stuckupcurlyguy yup. Even when they've suffered horrifically under it, people tend to build power structures like the ones they already know, even unintentionally.
The motivation is the same. People dont want to be slaves regardless of what its called and regardless whether they live in a hut, on a farm, or whatever insignificant detail. They revolt because they are slaves and being treated badly and have no say, thats it.
Finally, a video about the Zanj Rebellion. Very underrated part of Islamic history. Especially since its one of the most extensively described campaigns in the whole of early Islamic historical writing.

Slavery continues to be a thing in many places, if one includes trafficked women and children forced into sex work and one should. However, overworked and underpaid isn't slavery, because you are paid even if not paid much. Also you can't be bought, or sold and have the option to change your employer if you find employment elsewhere. (Edit) Thank you for the comments informing me of employees getting their passports confiscated and being force to live and work in inhumane conditions: I didn't know.

The status level of agricultural slaves and military slaves (mamluks/ghilmans) of Islamic empires was so incompatible there really needs to be an English terminology to separate the two types of "slaves"
But the caliphate that we’re talking about used both? I don’t get what point you’re trying to make here since no matter what he’d still have gotten the right one
oh that's alright then. You were one of the good ones. On another note wasn't there mass castration in north africa male for sl@ves precisely to avoid overpopulation and revolts?
@@thedonkey6704 The point is that in islamic society, agricultural slaves and military slaves were two very distinct social classes, which in English are bundled together as both being "slaves". What he is saying is that there should be a clearer distinction in English of what sort of slave is being refered. Thought there's no such word, as there wasn't really a usage of slave warriors in medieval Europe. The word "sclavus", coming from the Medieval practice of enslaving the pagan slavic peoples in the east. (Before this, the Latin term for slave was "Servus", as in servant. The problem here being that by the simple usage of the word slave, one could just end up equating mamluk warriors to chattel slaves working the fields in terms of social status, as they'd all be "slaves".
Slavery in the Islamic world is historically complex and differs significantly from the transatlantic slave trade, which tends to dominate discussions about slavery. Islamic slavery included various forms such as military, domestic, and concubine slavery, with different cultural and legal contexts, making it a more nuanced subject to discuss. Islamic countries had slavery till the XX and sometimes beyond for example slavery existed in the Sultanate of Zanzibar until 1909. Slavery and slave trade existed in the Zanzibar Archipelago for at least a thousand years. There is less accessible research and fewer historical documents about slavery in the Islamic world compared to the transatlantic slave trade, making it harder for scholars and the public to engage with the topic. Slaves in the Islamic world were often acquired through warfare, trade, and piracy. Many were prisoners of war or captured in raids, but there was also a significant number of slaves bought from external regions such as Africa, Central Asia, and Europe. Slaves in Islamic societies often had more varied roles, including positions as soldiers ( Mamluks), administrators, domestic workers, and artisans. Some slaves could achieve high status and even power. Slavery was not strictly racial; slaves came from various ethnic backgrounds including Africans, Europeans, and Asians.
As an ethnic Arab, I would like to thank you for making this video, it is a topic not much discussed. Especially during these times, when more and more people try to victimise their culture or ethnicity. Our ancestors were slaves and the enslavers. Cultures and ethnicities are not something to be victimised or made to be the perpetrators. All our history is double sided, thus is our way of life, culture and identity. Many people may not accept this, it is but the truth.
the zanj rebellion was not a "slave rebellion" but a "black rebellion" (most slaves were loyal to the Abbasid caliphate and fought against the rebellion. the origin of the rebellion origin had nothing to do with slaves. that rebellion was initiated by arabs from the gulf, especially by an Arab called Ali bin Muhammad, who sought to destabilise the abbasid caliphate. first he succeeded in organising a revolt in BAHRAIN (an island that has noting to do with any slaves nor any kind of slavery issues). after the revolt was defeated, the arab Ali bin Muhammad relocated to southern iraq, where he yet again organized a revolt. first, free local arabs assisted the rebellion. only later on, numerous east african migrants (of whom most of them were FREE people), joined the joined the rebellion. most of the slaves during this incident were even on the side of the caliphate and fought AGAINST the rebellion. the distinguishing characteristics in that rebellion was the fact that many free eastern african migrants joined the arab rebellion, because foreign migrants were usually not much interested in involvement of internal arab disputes. so that this rebellion was called as zanji-rebellion. that's the story about it.
@@SafaM-ne8zm I have never stated that the Zanj Rebellion was a ‘slave revolt’, I would also not call it a ‘black revolt’. Everything you stated here has already been discussed, but I will analyse your comment here now. First of all it was a religious revolt (as you stated), it had nothing to do with the colour of the people’s skin or their enslavement, but this obviously being the case that does involve enslaved peoples, makes it quite an interesting subject to study. Obviously most slaves were fighting for the Abbasids, due to them being their overlords. But as I am analysing your text here, you attempt to make it seem like slaves played a minor role, enslaved Bantu ‘Zanj’ people were one of the main contributors to the revolt, of course Arabs also took part in the fighting, but that doesn’t mean the Bantu peoples were insignificant within the revolt. Obviously in Bahrain there were slaves like in any part of the world, that doesn’t excuse it though. You make a weak attempt at trying to downplay the significance of enslaved or freed Bantu peoples.
The Zanj rebellion was featured in the video game Assassin's Creed: Mirage. It was the first time I had ever heard about it. Glad to know more about this rebellion because the game didn't go into too much detail about it.

Interestingly, this is the first time that I have been informed of a slave rebellion within the Islamic world, we generally only learn about rebellions by people of African descent that occurred in the Americas, here in Brazil a curious episode occurred during the regency period of the monarchy from 1835-1840, In the state of Bahia, several slaves of Muslim origin, known as Malês, rose up and attacked the imperial authorities and blacks who were not Islamic, but the conspiracy was quickly discovered and violently repressed, as a result, the rebellion is falled, several were killed and deported to their places Originally, Kings and Generals is a fantastic channel when it comes to bringing historical facts that we don't learn in schools.
Yes. Slavery in Islamic Countries and the East African-, Sahara-and Mediterian Slave Trade was a central part of every islamic Empire or State over a.milenia. al
I actually met a slave once in Southern Morocco back in 96. I had been travelling the country for several weeks already and had met this Moroccan in a small town. He became my guide for the day and was showing me around. At some point, he introduced me to an elderly African man. The Moroccan translated for us and we exchanged a few pleasantries before moving on. Afterwards he casually told me like it was the most normal thing in the world that the man was a slave. I couldnt believe my ears. Had I known that while we were talking I would have spent much MUCH more time conversing with the man. Maybe even try to find some way to help him if thats what he wanted, or at least I would like to think so after all these years . I was only 26 at the time and still had a lot of wising up to do so I dont know if my head would have been in the right place to be able to help him. Certainly my resources werent adequate. I remember him being a calm soft spoken man. Didnt seem to me to be at all under any duress. But we only spoke for a few minutes with him asking me questions about the US. Had I known it would have been me asking all the questions.
I still remember back in undergrad stumping one of my professors in class when she was speaking of the Haitians as the “first” successful slave revolt and then I asked her “what about the Mamluks?”
@@cnm7558 You cant just transpose your own History and apply it to another place, our slavery was a different system, with different social laws, different prejudices, and different problems. That being said mamluks were not even slaves, they were freed upon their release but swore loyalty to their patron. They are as much "slaves" as medieval knights were.
@@Yatagurusu That's an Entymological fallacy. One of the official titles of the Pope is "Slave of the Slaves of God"- does that mean that he is a Slave of the Bishops? The Mamluks called themselves as "Slaves" to the Sultan(whom they would later overthrow) but were not, in reality, slaves Their name might have meant slave, but they weren't slaves- they were nobility. On the contrary, the actual Slaves were called "Ghulam" and lived in far worse conditions than in the Americas.
Nice video. But you should have mentioned that those so-called ‘Abyssinian slaves’ that are mentioned in Arabic sources sometimes were not ethnically Abyssinians (the orthodox Christians and Jews Amhara and Tigrayans) but pagans and to a lesser degree even Muslims that had nothing to do with Abyssinians. The Arabs for some reason just decided to call them ‘Abyssinians’ because as far as the Arabs care they came from the country of Abyssinia.
This was common especially in Ancient and Medieval times. Being Christians, Ethiopians and Nubians were the two groups of dark-skinned Africans that Europeans and Middle Easterners would've interacted with the most, and so any dark-skinned africans moving forward were simply referred to as some variant of Ethiopian/Abyssinian for simplicity's sake as well as the fact that they simply didn't know any better.

A fascinating topic. It's interesting to see how, despite being separated by one thousand years, both the Arab and the American excuses for enslaving sub-saharan Africans were similar. History never ceases to amaze me with it's strange connections. Thank you so much for releasing this video.
They're not the same. Muslims enslaved because they conquered and could enslave, Americans enslaved because they saw one group of people as inherently inferior
The first anti-slavery law in England was by William I who made it illegal to export slaves from England. Later Edward I (according to an episode of Time Team, though I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere) as part of his legal reforms banned slavery in England.

Never heard that Muhammad peace be upon him sold a slave, all the slaves he had were freed, you failed to mention that only way to become a slave are prisoners of . And nearly 13 ways for a slave to be free, one of which in the hand of the slave himself
Never heard that Muhammad peace be upon him sold slaves ... he had 13 slaves in his life (if I remeber correctly) all of which were freed. Before Islam there were dozens of ways for a free man to become slave, and one way for the the slave to become free, Islam flipped that over its head making only one way for a free to become a slave which is prisoner of war and 13 ways for the slave to become free .. one of which is in the hand of the slave himself. So basically Islam was draining out slavery. One of the reasons why the Islamic empire relied a lot on slaves from Africa during its history due to the fact that a slave would get his freedom on average in 7 years (can't remember the source but I can find it for you if you want). Not to mention the rights granted to slaves... one of which if a slave is harmed he is automatically free.... which means all the slaves during the zing revolution were actually free ... there are reasons why the abbasid Era at that time was collapsing ... that is one of them

This is an excellent video on a topic that is not discussed enough. African enslavement in the Islamic world started centuries before the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, which can be seen as an OFFSHOOT of that trade, and built on its existing infrastructure. Great work here.
Actually slavery started millennia before trans-Atlantic slaves trade all over the world, and no, t it has its own infrastructure, and by no mean it was an offshoot, nice try
@@TheAmrthe2nd Stupid arguments used to downplay Arab slave trade. It was systematic and institutional system of slavery. And the Trans-Atlantic slave trade DID use its infrastructure to get itself started.
You folks do realize that the European slave traders we're just one part of a multinational slave trade, right? And guess what other culture was knee deep in said trade? I'll give you a hint, it's the one in this video.
Did we not watch the same video? It was no where near as bad for multiple reasons, including: 1- Plantation slavery was no where near as common. 2- It was against the law to physically abuse slaves. 3- The slaves were not prohibited from using their languages or keeping their religions. 4- They had legal rights and could go to court.
@@Honest_Question Typical lies, you say somethings against the law so therefore it didn’t happen. How about how non Muslims word meant nothing against a Muslim in Islamic court. Don’t make me laugh.
@@Lafuerza_V I didn't say they were never abused, as that would be naive. But unlike the west where is was allowed by law to kill your slaves if you felt like it, in Islamic countries you couldn't do that.
Great video as always! Just one small correction: In 8:34, “Sahib Al-Zanj” means “Friend of the Zanj” not “Master of the Zanj”. Other than that, awesome video!
My brother, you are not an Arab That's why you think that Sahibo always means a friend or companion Sahibo Alzing , It means not the friend of the zingi, but the owner of the zingi The word “sahib” originally means your owner, and it is also applied to a companion, and it is also applied to a true friend in Arabic, and not to any friend, because he is always your companion and does not leave you in all your circumstances .
Very interesting documentary, it is very rare to here about the islamic slavery. It is quiet publicly denied in arabic countries and under estimated in Europe.
It's stupid to paint them black. Slavery in the middle east, unlike the US, wasn't based on racism and believing that black slaves are inferior. They had Persian, black, turkish, European and even Arab slaves. Most slaves were educated and many reached the highest levels of government up to grand vazir and military generals. Many become scholars or rich merchants.
Eunuchs were a specific type of slave for very specific jobs. You wouldn't castrate labour slaves or slave soldiers, cause there isn't really a purpose to it and the high mortality rate means they would have killed a ton of slaves for literally nothing. Also castration was technically against the law in the domains of the Abbasids, so the actual castration of the slaves was often done by Christian monasteries (for example in the ERE) who then sold the slaves to the Abbasids.
Can you please enlightenment and tell me the difference between "Islamic" slavery and other forms of slavery that was practiced almost everywhere in the world till very recently and how it has continued till today.
@@abdibgm5748 Islamic slavery ie. slavery practiced in the Islamic world. Compare it to European slavery. And it's continued to this day in places like the gulf country, where chattel slavery has been outlawed, yet the governments of these countries (namely Qatar and UAE) still exploit desperate workers from poorer countries to work menial jobs (construction, cleaning, etc) all the while having to sign exploitative contracts that can be described as nothing but debt bondage.(The act of forcing labour on someone out of financial debt), all the while being paid slave wages (considered great in these poor people's eyes, but absolutely nothing to the income of native Arabs) and given awful accomodations. A simple research on the Qatar olympics will tell you much about working conditions of these foreign workers, too. The estimates of how many workers died to build the stadiums... In the meantime, the now minority native population of Arabs lives luxoriously with no taxes and all the luxories you can see in social media. The slaver culture hasn't died in this land, unfortunately, it has only adapted to modern times, times that do not tolerate the term "slave". So, they no longer attempt to own people as propriety, isntead they permanently accquire workers.
there is slavery in almost every country in the world, it exists everywhere, its more commom in africa and asia, noy becouse some inherent thing in their religion but becouse poverty, authoritarianism and imperialidm which effect those regions. but slavery does not only exist there, the US still has legal slavery, south america has thousands of slaves, it exists in europe too, tho not as much as the rest of the world (becouse we have our slaves in other continents than europe)
Earlier also Feroz a Persian slave rebelled against second caliph Umar and killed him due to injustice and cruel treatment by caliph and his colleagues.
After watching this video, I cannot helped but wondering why did the Abbasid Caliphate did not come up with the concept of indentured servitude as replacement of slavery in the aftermath of the Zanj Rebellion. At the very least, those who signed contracts still needed to be paid and their rights protected.
Why would we need indentured servitude. The atlantic slave trade had racial hierarchy. Where black slaves were subhuman and white slaves were called indentured servents and were recognised as human. This was never an issue in Islamic slavery. No one ever suggested that slaves were subbumans. Slaves, in theory, had access to the court and were entitled to protection from the caliph and could negotiate their own release. Now in reality, the rich always exploit the poor and ignore the "rights" of the poor. But this happened for indentured servents as well.
Honestly as a Muslim these slaves had the right to revolt Islam toungh us Muslims to treat our slaves like normal people and not to beat them and to give them the same clothes we wear and to feed them from the same food that we eat and to give them medical care if they were sick and to give them money for their hard work but it seems that man Muslims and non Muslim in the Islamic caliphate did not follow these rules which led to a rebellion
@@azmainfaiak8111 Its not that that they cant follow but there is financial benefits from slavery. By the way, Islamic caliphate is a historic term used to describe the entities in which the leader was Muslim.
Slavery still exists in the East, from Indians who are indentured at home or Indians who were kept in Iran, to North Koreans used in most parts of thier Eastern allies territory and the officers keep all the money to pocket and send back to their higher ups in NK.
I still remember reading how the British specifically prohibit investigations into how rampant slavery was in the Saudi state because they were a political ally
The Muslim states that get the most benefits from the west like Qatar and Saudi Arabia have the highest levels of slavery. America doesn’t care about foreign slavery just it’s economic and imperial interests.
Happens in every country. The EU had actively used slave labour eg: North Korean Labour camps in Poland. Australia had the same issue until recently with mass abuse of labour agents. America practically has an entire economy based on the exploitation of illegal immigrants.
50 million people were living in modern slavery: 28 million in forced labour and 22 million in forced marriages. 50% of all modern slaves in Asian. Middle-East 15%, Afrika 15%, North & South America 10% and Europe 10%. Source UN.
Personally, I wonder how much of this could be factual, for instance the Zanj did not write their own history, perhaps they actually did want to end slavery? In theory the people in charge did not want the concept of abolition to gain favor in their empire, so they probably did what they could to write the history in a way that did not make the slaves seem too sympathetic. In other words history is written by the victor.
@KingsandGenerals Great question. Sahib mostly mean companion. That term Sahib Al Zaman, is from the shia doctrine and only Allah can be a Master. @deepseashark5951 These are the facts of Islamic history, read Surah Nisa verse 24, Muhammad mentioned the enslavement of married women from the mouth of God.
7:30 This is a verse from the Quran [9:111]. It seems like it was translated from Arabic to English, and rather than finding the original, it has been translated back.
Quran- , it provides regulations designed to improve the situation of slaves, and recommends freeing them, especially "believing" slaves. The Qur'an also recognizes slavery as a source of injustice, and places the freeing of slaves on the same level as feeding the poor.
The slavery in the Muslim world was totally different than American slavery and was not based on race…they had slaves from every conquered land and was more so endentured servants or soldiers. Also a slave could raise his position not only to freedom but to a governing position … the word slave often involves images of trans Atlantic slave trade that the Europeans did.
This slavery was still wrong, slavery in Islam only comes from war as opposed to imprisonment of the people that were conquered, not from raiding random areas. But the stuff about Muslim theologians trying to justify the Zanj slavery is bs. The Zanj were just used by this guy to become a leader and have power, but there is some justification for the rebellion on their part, except all the atrocities the did to the people the conquered

*Zanj derives from Azania* a Kingdom described by Ptolomy the Roman. Azania is shown as an east African Kingdom (crown) in the earliest maps of Africa. Zanzibar-Tanzania are probably indirectly descended from the Azania exonym.
The fact that large scale agricultural and mining slavery was effectively ended by the Zanj rebellion was great.

@@SafaM-ne8zm And again, I have to reiterate, Arabs PLAYED A HUGE ROLE in the revolt, but that doesn’t mean the Bantu peoples didn’t aswell.

Coup, not a revolt. And the Mamluks continued using other Circassians as slaves.

Their name might have meant slave, but they weren't slaves- they were nobility. On the contrary, the actual Slaves were called "Ghulam" and lived in far worse conditions than in the Americas.
Imagine being a veteran of multiple battles just to end up being killed by a slave with a plate
Allah needed slaves to fulfil prophecy. A Caliphate a day keeps the doctor away.

Later Edward I (according to an episode of Time Team, though I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere) as part of his legal reforms banned slavery in England.
In 1182, the Eastern Romans, resentful of the Italians having trade privileges in the empire, and controlling maritime commerce, slaughtered as many Latins (aka, Italians) in Constantinople. Any survivors were sold as slaves to the Seljuk Turks.

Just for people who don’t know : Zanj is a derogatory term to black people in Arabic it is the equivalent of the N word in English

Incredible video !

Didn’t they castrate all their slaves too or was that a different place?
No they didn't
Yeah they did that with agricultural slaves / subsaharan africans to prevent them from procreating
They did. With a death rate of nearly 80%.
Not all slaves. It was also practiced in the christian world for choir boys. Search for eunuchs and castrato
And Islamic slavery is still prevalent in the modern world
There is nothing called Islamic slavery, it is just slavery
Can you please enlightenment and tell me the difference between "Islamic" slavery and other forms of slavery that was practiced almost everywhere in the world till very recently and how it has continued till today.
why you blaming Islam
it's people fault not religion 😊
@@Yatagurusu You do realise that what you're doing is comparing two evils right?

Slavery is more common today than it ever has been in history my brother and the middle east isn't even one of the top hotspots.
Source UN.
@@teamjam2863you are being dishonest
Personally, I wonder how much of this could be factual, for instance the Zanj did not write their own history, perhaps they actually did want to end slavery? In theory the people in charge did not want the concept of abolition to gain favor in their empire, so they probably did what they could to write the history in a way that did not make the slaves seem too sympathetic. In other words history is written by the victor.
as always beautiful and truly educational video
tbh the most uncovered part of arab caliphates is the relationship between arabs and africa.
Sahib Al Zanj means friend of the Africans. Saahib means friend or companions. The disciples of Muhammad are known as Saahiba or swahabas
Words can have multiple meanings. What is your translation for "sahib al-zaman"? Friend of time?
@KingsandGenerals Great question. Sahib mostly mean companion. That term Sahib Al Zaman, is from the shia doctrine and only Allah can be a Master. The shias will say its Master but Companion is best translated. Just look at the most ways Sahib was translated as and you'd realise it's mostly companion 99% of the time

Quran- , it provides regulations designed to improve the situation of slaves, and recommends freeing them, especially "believing" slaves. The Qur'an also recognizes slavery as a source of injustice, and places the freeing of slaves on the same level as feeding the poor.
Islam puts the level of freeing slaves to the level of feeding the poor in the Quran.
You guys are just Islamophobes with no knowledge of the Torah, Bible, or Quran.
