Puig's level was on another planet during these games. She steamrolled everyone until she met Kvitova in the SF and Kerber in the final, and played out of her mind against two of the best players in the world. This must be the biggest upset in tennis ever.
Finally I found the whole match, this is 2021 and I feel like it was yesterday, lots and emotions went out watching the game, Cried, screamed, I clenched my fist, like if I were the one who wins the point, thank you Monica for giving us this to all the latinamericans a gold medal. I´m from Mexico and I work in a WTA tournament in Monterrey and I saw Monica there and I have special atention to her because she´s the best latin player and represent us, after the olympics I´m still waiting to see her back to our tournament just to see how it feels to be close to a super woman like her. OMG this match!!! I'm Puerto Rican and a tennis fan so this was everything!! But lets see it from a objective point of view from the tennis perspective and in the context of that championship . This was big, like BIG!! Monica was not suppose to be in this match but, against all odds she got there and won Olympic immortality. She defeated 3 Grand Slam Champions to get there (Muguruza, Kvitová and Kerber)! For example, Kerber was having one of the best seasons of her career, she just won Australian Open earlier that year and she was playing awesome. But Monica played like no one was expecting since the start of the Olympics and she was able to keep it going till the final, which is amazing for someone that has never been in a position like that! Also the Olympics gave a different push that other championships, is every 4 years and it really is for your country and for passion. Even so is the Olympics in terms of ranking and to be a top player it really don't matter that much. The points they earn from playing is no more that what a medium size tournaments gave and no $$$. But is a dream that no other Grand Slam can offer, even Serena has said that winning the Olympics has been one of the biggest moments of her career. So yeah, we all cried when the heard the Borinqueña!
The Monica Puig that showed up to this match on this day was simply not going to lose. On this day she would have beat any champion that ever played the game.
I have NEVER seen MONICA PUIG play like this!! My goodness, TOTALLY mentally and physically Balanced! She got INSIDE of none other than Angelique Kerber 's head and messed UP her mind. MONICA played like a leftie, but with a RIGHT HAND! Angles, drop-shots, cornering Kerber & just at the perfect time switching the point in her favor AND THE SPEED OF THOSE FEET! ¡MUY BIEN HECHO BORIINQUENA! You do our PUERTORICAN HISTORY PROUD! 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
We Puerto Ricans suffered and at the same time, enjoyed this great match so much. Our Monica did a great job. She never gave up, even at that second set. Kept fighting until the last point! Very proud of her performance winning our first Olympic gold medal 🎾🏅💪
I can asure that this girl is in every Puerto Rican heart. She play for the country like no one other. I follow her in other events representing P.R and when she looses she cry with her heart, you can see that she really feel sorry for it. So when wins this, it was HUGE!
Sad to see people in PR criticizing her being unable to sustain that form since. Just think about that feeling she gave us all for those two magical weeks. That feeling alone is enough for a lifetime!
The power of the Olympics, to have an athlete go above and beyond any expectation. I remember watching her run and it's even more unbelievable thinking back to that week.
