    I am very glad to hear some appreciation for this series as it is the one fantasy world I felt immediately drawn to and at home in, rare for me being predominantly a reader of history. Blood of Elves is easily my favorite fantasy book Don’t get me wrong, these books can be absolutely bonkers and I don’t expect people to immediately like them. I think part of the problem is people go in expecting them to be just like the short stories and the novels aren’t necessarily like that. I’m not even sure I would say Geralt is “THE” main character. And that last book throwing in two frame narratives and the “this might not even be what really happened because history is usually wrong…..” ok could we have done that earlier instead of waiting to the last second? These books are like a sibling to me where they can be annoying and you see flaws but you love them anyway.
    Happy reading!

    I'm Polish and I read the series in high school probably five times over, it's a shame the English translation leaves so much to be desired. There's also a lot of cultural themes and references to mythology that are very hard to explain, but hopefully at least provide some sense of exotic mystery for the Western readers. Absolutely in love with the series

    Anyone planning on reading The Witcher books needs to know that it is "Literary Fiction ", not "Genre Fiction ". The Book guy has a video explaining the differences very well. I feel a lot of reviewers and readers fail to understand this. If you only read Genre fiction you may enjoy the short stories but the Saga will probably not be to your liking. This is a matter of personal taste, I'm not trying to imply this has anything to do with intelligence or that Genre Fiction isn't "real literature " as i love both. Anyway, happy reading!

    I read all eight books last month, which helped me realize how poor the screen adaptation has been (even though it’s still good viewing per se). The final book of the five-book series seemed a little forced, with shoehorning in Arthurian mythology (and then reinforcing/justifying it in the prequel Season of Storms). But superior writing and better nuanced characters than pretty much any other fantasy series I could think of. Gerald is not as shining white as he is in the TV series, nor as automatically right in every decision, which make him a more complex and enjoyable character. The sheer weight of characters that enter, exit, and reappear in the series makes the narrative harder to follow than in n manny other series (that’s a good thing!). Sapkowski perfected his complexity and 3:56 art with the Hussite trilogy series: also a must-read!

      Same for me, for me it's the focus on Cirri. I like her as a character, but she feels like the only reason the story happens. Get Cirri to safety, hide Cirri, Cirri is lost, find Cirri. The entire continent is at war this only affects the cast in their efforts, to find Cirri.
      Still gonna finish it, but I was wondering how you feel about the novel's.

      The short stories are actually well written. The novels are miserable pieces of crap.
      Seriously, I felt the same way you did and was MASSIVELY let down by the end. Andrei clearly had zero clue how to write a saga like the witcher. The last book is what would happen if you wrote yourself into a corner and had to deliver the final book to the publisher within 2 weeks.

    I read Blood of Elves, but could not get into the writing. The plot often meandered without aim, the prose was stilted, and the worldbuilding lacked focus, so I ended up more frustrated than immersed by the book. Since the Witcher is a work in translation, it's possible that these issues are reduced in the original language, but they're severe enough to hamstring one's enjoyment.

      It's amazing how USA has so many bad translators in all forms of media. Be about books or even games.
      I swear I've read books written by Russian, Polish, Japanese and Chinese authors with better Italian and Portuguese translations than the English versions.

    • @Fianna1775
      @Fianna1775 4 месяца назад

      I’ve always found the process of translating fascinating. It is my belief that no matter what, there will always be something lacking or altered in a translated version of a piece of writing, particularly something as subjective as humor. I was trying to read 100 years of Solitude and just couldn’t handle it. I kept wondering if it was the translation. I did try to read the original after that but the dirt eating just wasn’t really my thing.
      I’ve read some strange Spanish translations too. In my Spanish edition of the hobbit they call Bilbo “Bilbo suitcases” or something instead of Baggins. And in A Man Called Ove they added this really long sentence to a description of Ove carrying an axe or some other tool. In the English they said he looked like a guerrilla fighter. In the Spanish they said he looked like a guerilla fighter in Africa who was about to storm the presidential palace. Quite a specific scenario there.
      One of the few times I have been annoyed with the English performances in Witcher 3 is when Ciri hugs Yen for the first time in the game. In the Polish version Yen was calling her daughter in a way that translated more to “my baby” or something. They take that out in the English version which is sad because I think it softened Yen a lot and showed how important that relationship was to Ciri.
